I really didnt like those cartoony guys in the first Guildwars but I rarely saw them in PVP areas so it didnt matter but it seems likely now that I will have to see this kind of stuff while I PVP?
They look like creepy things that I normally wouldn't see unless I was babysitting some kids or something. I know that a large percentage of the GW community is younger but was it really necessary to have a stuft animal looking race?
I don't want to feel like I am playing a kids game . .. anyone else feel the same way?
Most of the cute stuff in the game is fine like the mini pets, etc. but something about those teletubby looking things creep me out.

Meh, just about every fantasy game now has some sort of cute little race that they hope appeals to a younger audience. It doesn't bother me, in a PvP scenario, I'd just target them the most. It would be like if TOR put in playable ewoks, I'd shoot them all day.
Are you making fun of midgets?
eh its better then a hobbit rip off. Really do not mind it that much.
You wanna see something creepy check out Teras furry race. The males are all bloated fur balls while the females are skanky 8 year old girls with bunny ears and tales.
Indirectly -- most definitely.
Never mind the graphics and special effects GW2 is using
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I like them. They look cute. I wouldn't play as one because the camera angle of small races makes me sick, but still. They're cute!
~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!

I'm with you OP. My eyes got sore from rolling them at these cute little things in Eye of The North. I think they're in though. I'll just have to avoid their zones and kick people from my party that roll one. (kidding. kidding probably.)
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
They remind of Stitch from that disney movie Lilo and Stitch. They are little gremlins but there is something cute about them at the same time. They might look cute in that picture but their teeth are all jagged and well they can be badass just like the rest of them imo.
As you can probably tell from my avatar I will be playing an Asura without question. I really like their look, back story, and everything else. Plus if you watch the Necromancer video on guildwars2.com you can see an Asura in action and they can be down right creepy. I love it! ^^
I think your ascertain that a cute little race is an attempt to appeal to younger audience is just silly, I would find it more likely that younger players would go for extremely large "badass" looking races or extremely attractive races.
I am very far from a young player, and I have often enjoyed playing a little race, especially in PvP. but also in PvE (nothing quite like a "tiny" tanking a giant or a dragon) Though I do understand that this is a preference and matter of opinion.
"Kids" and "younger" has nothing to do with it.
thier voices are horrible too. Children need something to play too.... so here ya go.
Don't be messing with my Asura you bookahs!
Strangely enough the Asura from GW did look better and more kick-ass than the ones I've seen so far in GW2.
I can only hope these were the more mongoloid kindred of the other Asura, and that there'll be enough choice to create agreeable ones

Just imagine how fun it will be to kill them in PvP. A thought to keep you warm at night.
With some of the concept art for armor designs out there, even these little guys will look pretty badass once they've gotten the gear...
I would have to say, the OP and those who follow suite stating that small or cute = for children, really come across as much younger to me. I would guess late adolescence to young adult, still trying to prove they are no longer "Kids" .
now I could be way off but either way it is a good example, If I have gotten the wrong impression then it shows how you can't really judge someone's age by how they present themselves in virtual space let alone someone's character preference. and if I am right then it shows that they are indeed exactly what they think the race would attract and they themselves are not interested in.
Either way, I like the Asura, they are not exactly what I would call cute but they are small, and will definitely play one. and for those that do not think little races have a place, well I guess dont play one. but I like freedom and choice, the more the better. and I am glad Arenanet is giving me choice to play a small race, and giving others the choice to play big bad beasties, and many in between.
I never considered playing Asura until I saw this... Golem Battle Suits.

Look right around 5:50 to see one. Might be fun you never know.
These two look pretty cool to me.. but they ARE only concept arts. Having said that, I do hope we are going to be able to make something similar in the game.
Eat me!
This is, a matter of opinion. Creating a "cute little race" isn't created to appeal to the average gamer -- the 30 year old male. Sure everyone has their own opinion of what races they like, but theres a reason they create different races in different styles, and its not JUST for game mechanics, its also to appeal to different kinds of players. Maybe these were created just to have a different flow of character type, maybe they were created because there were no tiny characters..... all I know is that they do look like a race that would appeal to children. Thats my opinion, but I don't think I'm alone in having that.
Yeah thats the biggest let down of the game.
LOL i hate them
You are correct that you are entitled to your own opinion, and if you stated "I don't like little or cute races" I would have been fine with that.
While I will agree that "Cute"(being a subjective term) can and does appeal to very young children, (primarily below the age of 10) in many mediums.
In the case of an mmo, a developer is not creating a little or cute race to appeal to those people. not only as you have stated is this not the target demographic it is also not the correct medium to even reach that demographic.
the average "Kid" playing mmos is 13 plus, and those people are even less likely to be interested in a little or cute race then the average 30 something player.
It would in fact make more sense to make a sweeping generalization like "its to appeal to female players" but this too would be inaccurate.
It is most likely, in my opinion, to appeal to players who like to play small races, and I do not think all those players fit into any single demographic mentioned above.
Then again it could be just because some People in ArenaNet liked them so they made them with no thought at all to demographics.
Source?
One of my sources says that the average gamer e 35 y.o. in USA, but is 23 y.o. in UK.
The other source says that the MMORPG average gamer ( because GW2 is an MMORPG, other games don't count) is 26 y.o.

And I agree with Aruvia. From my experience playing MMORPGs for 10+ years, I know some men and women around the age of 30 that like to play the "cute tiny race" in MMORPG's, and most of the teenagers and kids I know have the preference for the "hot and beautiful female" and the "brutal and massive male" characters.
Age has nothing to do with chosing that cute and tiny races. It's all about taste. Don't forget that there are a lot of men in the age of 30 that love the cute and tiny anime female characters, there are even cases when some of those men ask, literally, to be able to marry them (WTF?! O.O').
And I usually don't like to play those races, but I have to admit that the Asura from GW2 has a different feeling, more like a smeagol or a gremlin. Almost all the other MMORPGs that have a tiny race are too much cuteness for my taste, I can't stand playing with it as my character, but I don't mind that other players use them, it's their choice.
@reignjuste
Id like for you to elaborate on how its the 'biggest' let down of the game, then again perhaps there is no need. You are entitled to your opinion on what you like and don't. I am not a fan of cute, nor am I a fan of small, IMO it brings a wide vararity of differen't character choice. Perhaps being small and technology advanced is awesome, and has a great advantage in the game somehow, Ill have to wait and see after checking it out.
@Sid_Vicious
I'm going to have to agree with you, they are sort of creepy looking. However, I highly doubt it will make you feel like your playing a kids game, while your slaughtering them in player versus player (PVP). It's nice to have big things to kill, but its nicer to have smaller things to step on. being killed by something small, somehow bugs me in secret, Although it's not much of a secret now. I feel its great that the choice is there, if I ever feel like trying them out. Perhaps they are little elite devils of mass destruction, who will pwnzor other races, with they're technology and engineering. XD
Agreed if we can make them look much less than cute I'll roll one, their lore makes them snarky little buggers and I'd like the look to match, great for some RP to bug your guildies
What? The Asura?
Well there is this thing called "irony".
Basically they're Anet's ironic, parody take on the "cute" fantasy races.
The Asura are completely ruthless, sociopathic, immensely arrogant and borderline genocidal megalomaniacs. They consider other races as animals that are to be studied and used for their world-dominating ends. They used the cute sylvari (they are the only really cute ones in GW2, hate em) for scientific experiments (you know spraying chemicals in bunny wabbits eyes to see how red they get, placing them in freezing water to see how long it takes them to die - science in short) for several decades until it occured to them that it might be unwise for political reasons. The fact that they look and sound like a cute eastern rpg wet dream is what is called irony. They are hobbits squared with the soul of Sauron on a bad day.
I'll enjoy playing my Asura megalomaniac sociopath and I'll call him Napoleon the Destroyer and I'll make him a badass Warrior, cute as a peach and I'll paint him pink. 'Cause it's cool. Dig?
(p.s. I suspect that whoever starts playing Asura for the pure cuddly cuteness factor is going to get a really nasty surprise when he or she embarks on their personal storyline. In fact, I expect an audible outcry from the lore-uninitiated at release)
