Has anyone noitced that the CE version advertises 30 days of free gameplay as part of the bonus? If you look at the regular version, it mentions nothing about the 30 days of free gameplay. It would be very unusual for an mmo package to sell without having at least 30 days of free gameplay. I personally have no use for a CE for any game ever released. Hopefully this is just a mistake.

"All new FINAL FANTASY XIV game packages come with a 30 days free trial period."
Quoted from the official site, http://eu.finalfantasyxiv.com/#/about/game_info
So don't worry
This is just like padding a resume, they left it off the standard edition to pad the CE list to make it sound a little better. They both have it though.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

Well, I figured as much, but I didn't see it on their website either. Thanks for the info guys.
I want to pray that this is a translation mistake and they meant an EXTRA 30 days free.... hehehe that'd be amazing.
You wanted my time, so I played you. You wanted my money, I forked it over. You wanted my soul, I gave it willingly. Not to complain... but when do I get my end of the deal? And no, I don't want your flippin' carrot. If you can't do that give me back my youth and keep the change. Why don't you try chasing your own damn carrot for a change? I'll gladly hold the stick.
Heck, if they give us 60-days of game itme, I'll buy the game on day one, lol. That's pays for the game itself!

This is why buying collector's editions are a waste of money. You pay $30.00 more for an extra $2.00 worth of junk. It's an obvious gimmick when they have to pad it with wording like that. This extra money is not worth getting into the game 8 days early. You are paying for 1 week of gameplay for what would normally get you 2 full months. I seriously can't believe so many people fall for this crap.
The moment I read "It's like" or "WoW" is the moment I stop reading your post.
Guess, I need to learn to use the scroll feature. I see it now for the NA version.
I think they put the '30 days of free game play' text in the NA CE list to try to make it sound as good as the EU edition. lol I'd really like to have that map!

"Well, that's just, like, your opinion man."
Personally I like and want some of the extra "junk". If you consider starting 8 days sooner junk.... /shrug
Honestly, if you think Collector's editions are a waste of money, you might as well consider Standard editions wastes of money, too. All you get out of those is a DVD, an instruction manual that's outdated as soon as you get it, and a cheap box.
People buy Collector's Editions because they're fancy and come with cool stuff they can look back on. Plus, you get special items in game that let everyone know how big a fan you are of the game.
While I've never purchased a collector's edition and never will, I don't think people who buy them are wasting money. They are just supporting something they love.

Please don't turn this thread into a CE vs NonCE bash. I personally don't care for all the extras that come with a CE version of any game, but I do know many people enjoy this stuff and it's none of my business or anyone else's.

I say it's worth it.
Just for the record the Standard sells for $49.99 and the CE goes for $74.99 so it is only $25 more. In fact it is on sell at amazon! Regular $74.99 now $74.54. If you hurry you can save 45 cents! lol
I won't use half of the stuff that comes with the game, I expect I won't really use the onion helm even for more than a few days (and then in a couple situations far into the future, like for example when I'm exploring/testing something).
Yet I bought Collector's edition, and if it doesn't ship from Amazon by noon I will probably order another one just to increase my chances of getting it right on the 22nd.
I can understand how it might look foolish for someone who was never planning to play the game anyways, and hates it so much that they troll its forums bashing anyone who does, but well... I'm not one of those people and I'd gladly pay a hundred dollars for the chance to get early access to this MMO which I have been anticipating for so long.
Money also isn't worthless to me, I live modestly not necessarily because the colleges I work for these days don't pay me enough (though I have lived in poverty, and can understand that reasoning), but because I find it liberating and I donate the lion's share of my income to certain causes or people who need it more than I. For example I drive a 1980 Mazda MX-7 when I'm home in Hawaii, and don't even own a car here in Denver where I take the train.
But MMO's are a cheap hobby in comparison to my other interests, I really don't see the big deal in things like subscription fees or collector's edition if you enjoy the games and want to really support the developers. For me I am extremely grateful that there are even companies like Square Enix's MMO team, Paradox Interactive (Victoria), and Kalypso (Tropico) so I throw money at them at pretty much every opportunity to ensure that I am helping to support that type of game development in the future.
I can lament over the state of the industry all I want, but if I don't support those companies which are making the products I want then I may as well give up on it altogether. I won't go so far as to support cash shops in game or worthless trinkets, but I think as a product FFXIV is easily worth my $75.

Apparently I hit upon a touchy subject here. If you all want to pay extra for the collector's editions of games then feel free. I have done it one time. I did it for EQ2. I quickly realized the extra money I paid wasn't worth it for me, and I would never do it again. I am patient, and I personally don't think paying the extra money for 8 days of gameplay and some trinkets is worth it.
I personally think that all packaging is a waste of money, be it for a CE or a standard edition. I prefer download. If FFXIV offered a download option, then that is how I would buy it. Not meaning to start another debate, but in this day and age of high-speed internet, and high capacity storage, hard copies of games and their respective packaging are outdated and just more fodder for landfills.
The moment I read "It's like" or "WoW" is the moment I stop reading your post.
This is a valid point that it is a personal choice and will have value on an individual basis. And as my mother used to tell me, there are people starving in Africa. Meaning you will never be able to truly defend purchase of a video game as a necessity so you could always find some way to be cynical of a game related purchase. And since the value of any video game is the what is preceived in the mind, only the person purchasing can define which elements bring the pleasure (including trinkets) which is the only purpose of the game.
Plus I had a computer crash and got to the point where I needed to reload WoW several years ago and while the game servers were up the website wasn't. So I was very happy to have my hard copies of the game in my library. Besides I can't imagine who would want to download the entire FFXIV client. The 4.5 GB OB copy took me almost 6 hours to download with the SE downloader. Do you really want to download the 9GB client and then the 6GB patch that way?
I've been waiting for this game for over two years. Patiently waiting and gluttonously lapping up each drop of info they decide to dribble out every couple months. Why? I'm a fan, their series and games clicks with me. My brother will spend $300 on a baseball bat and glove... because it's something he enjoys and he wants to not just have a basic bat and glove but he wants a superior bat and glove with special wood and stitching.
I am buying the collectors editions (Which I have preordered and will be picking up bright and early on Wednesday Morning) and I don't feel it's a waist in the slightest.
It's all a matter of taste and personal preference.

Live a life less ordinary.
Lohdown, I'm with you on downloading the retail client. I always save a copy on my 2nd harddrive when I buy retail copies through downloads. Some retail download sites like direct2drive, will usually offer patches for download also. Lets hope the patcher works better than it did in open beta.
Omg, thats exactly how I am.
I wanted a golf set, but I didn't want to get a cheap used set, so I bought a new set, because I knew I would enjoy playing with it a whole lot more.
Same with a tennis racquet, I didn't want a cheap k-mart racquet, I wanted a good pro racquet. So I got something that I knew played well and and would make me feel better playing with.
I didn't want to get my bro a cheap plastic chess set, cuz I new he would appreciate it more if I got him a good wooden, tripple-weighted set. So that's what I got him.
Watching people spend extra cash on useless trinkets and in-game fluff = Priceless.
There are some things money can't buy.
For everything else, there's MasterCard.
Sorry, reading his chart brought back nostalgic memories of a time when that was funny.
Heh, there's actually one thing that's useful, and that's the security token. And right now, the CE is the only way to get one.
I think they put the '30 days of free game play' text in the NA CE list to try to make it sound as good as the EU edition. lol I'd really like to have that map!

"The world economy is not that great, but we need to give the Gaijins some reason to buy the collector's edition."
"That is not hard, we simply use the world economy to our advantage."
"How so?"
"Well, for example, the Americans are feeling inadequate with all that debt, lets give them a certificate so they can verify their own worth."
"And the Europeans?"
"Include a shotglass and a map. They'll forget their troubles if they're drunk enough, but may need a little help navigating when they're that badly hammered."
Until like a few weeks from now... They'll offer them in the VERY near future, trust me. It makes no sense business wise not to.
Seems to me like the first 30 days costs the box price.
