Seriously, enough is enough with such awful rushed out games. Isn't it sad that the last truly successful MMORPG came out in 2004? And that we are at the point where we are seeing MMOs based on celebrities?? This genre is a joke now, catering to the casuals and the compulsive spender willing to pay $2 for instant gratification.
Comments
But yeah you're right, the genre is abit of a joke now tbh, that being said...isn't TOR aimed at casuals?
"Come and have a look at what you could have won."
If Guild Wars 2 wasnt in development id probably be thinking along the same lines, but as it stands i have that to try if TOR turns out to be crap.
edit - typo
SW:TOR won't fail, but i dont think its going to be as hugely popular as WoW.. i think personally it will be more like Eve, a niche game, but the 'best of its type' .. its not a game i would personally play because im not into storybook games, but there are plenty of people out there who do, and they will buy it. with so many MMO's to choose from though, i dont really understand why you think that this one game will determine your own future gaming or lack of it.. my biggest problem.. is limiting myself to just a few games...
Let me tell you one thing for sure: ToR will only cater to casuals! They even offically announced that they don't care about the core nor hardcore gamers the only care about casuals and don#t want other players.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

SW:toR will not fail on the level of profitability.
SW:toR will not be as huge as the fans think, it will not come remotely close to WoW, But, it will have a steady population significantly higher then the steady out point of AoC War and other such non-successes.
It will have high sales and my bet is that 3 months in it will be at a slow (standard) decrease in player numbers while being around 300K users.
Does the OP had any other objective than Ranting when he created this thread?

SW:TOR is destined to fail ...for the same reason it is destine to succeed
Because success and failure are individually defined.
Someone will log onto SW:TOR on the first day, and see a MOB called "Three horned toad" whos model has only two horns and declare "SW:TOR Fails!" And promptly ladens the forums with HOw bad SW:TOR is and how Bioware stole his/her money
On the flip side others will be so enamored by Uber Jedi awesomness they will forget and forgive the fact they continuously fall through the world geometry. The come to the forums and proclaim "SW:TOR, 4Evah!"
All we can do, wait for it. HOpe there is an open beta, and make your own "Fail vs Success" determination
BUt I emplore you....dont post it.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Did you have any objective other than looking like a clown when posting?
Not as you when you create threads to rant

They did? I guess I missed that official announcement. Could you post a link please?
my guess is that in the first 6 months it will have a few more than that... and will probably have between 600k and 1m subs, that number will either be maintained or decrease based on whether the 'after story' gameplay is enough to keep people interested, tbh, only a few people will play each class for every single storyline in the game.. i do expect initial box sales to be fairly spectacular though.
Don't get your hopes up. ™

It will likely have 600k to a million in initial sales, but it will not maintain subs that high. I feel highly conifdent in that, but we shall see.

Well the Hardcore MMO market is dead and cant sustain anything but a flame war. Hardcore is a dying breed. But I am not opposed to Hardcore gameplay. I know the only thing that will save this genre is real death penalties like corpse runs. But the min-max asshats i could give a crap about. In fact I would put min-max detection in the game and warn that the character faces perma death because making any stat too low will cause such trauma that your character will die permanently if highly injured.
To be honest, I was originally looking forward to TOR, but after seeing some of the vids from developers i'm less enthiusiastic about it, in fact, i didn't like WoW, i'm an eve online player(i know, the world's most boooooring game..) and i remember playing the first star wars mmorpg, which flopped worse than max payne: the motion picture. that being said, it looks like the new one is going to have the cartoony look of wow, with Kotor meets Mass effect being the basis of the gameplay, which honestly looks overdone and uninspired. just a personal opinion though, not ruling out anyone else's opinions and saying mine is definitive.
Wilberg, what was that 2004 game you're referring to?
Anyway, I hope to clean out the bottom of Coruscant and make it as pristine as Corellia before I quit TOR.
Anyway, if you're done with all MMOs, then good for you, because you can go back to college and actually graduate this time!
Warning: I could be on NoDoz caffeine pills so I hope I don't post anything outrageous!
I dedicate this song to The Matrix Online & Asheron's Call 2 -- the games I hoped to play someday but had bit the dust before their prime.
If you want to prove you're hard core, I notice Ryzom is open source. Have at it!
good, be gone with you
Truly successful MMORPG? Lots of them since 2004. You don't need to have millions of users to be successful.
Just like a restaurant chain...you don't need to have as many stores and sales as McDonalds to be successful. If that were true, only McDonalds would exist...
Now I've made no decisions on this game yet but i read that article and in no way see what your talking about...the closest thing I found was this quote in the article which coudl hardly be considered an official announcement :
“We have to ignore the top of the hardcore,” says Walton, talking about those players who will simply ignore the story and min-max their way to the top end of the game."
Whilst your welcome to your intepretation of the above quote I only see it talking about the small eprcentag eof palyers that power level their way to end game and burn through that content,it in no way says they are ignoring all the ahrcore and only catering to casuals and don't care about any other group.
The group of players he's referring to are impossible to cater to because they will burn through content faster than is feasible to make it and I cannot think of one game that even treis to cater to them exclusively or at all because doing so would take to many resources and be detrimental to th emajority of your player base.
Now it could turn out that SW:TOR turns out to be the Clone wars MMO for casual teens but there is ntoihng in that article to indicate so onyl your liberla interpretation of one quote.
I can't share this pessimism. There are plenty of MMOs in the making which at least look playable. GW2, Rift, TERA, Arch Age, whatever fits your style.

TOR will not fail nor will it be a smashing success either.
If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
There are a lot of promising titles coming out in the next couple years I wouldn't put all my eggs in one basket so to speak
