It loses sufficient subscribers so that it its costs aren't covered by its revenues.

Isn't it sad that the last truly successful MMORPG came out in 2004?

Can you please provide the exact criteria you'll be using to tell whether the SWTOR "fails"?  This way we can ensure that you do indeed quit when if it does.  Thanks!

By "last successful game in 2004", i assume you mean World of Warcraft?  Does that mean that if SWTOR has less than 10 million subscribers on launch, you'll consider it a failure?

I'm also confused by some of the other stuff in your post, like you criticize games for catering to casuals and instant gratification, yet this is the main thing that made WoW a success.  Anyhow, I'm sure once you post your criteria, it'll all become clear.

Would you please give us the link to this info? They officialy announced that they don't care about other gamers except the casuals?

I'm having trouble classifyng you, just another troll or just another one typing BS out of his a*s.

Of course there is no such thing as an official statement about casuals only.

if that means we don't get "LFG HIGH LEVEL RAID COME TO CORONET FOR GEARCHECK OR ELSE NO /INV"

    and

"casual fun guild looking for members, we only raid 7d/week from 7PM-midnight"  spams I'm definately subscribing on this one.

Please define success, with the understanding that WoW's numbers are an anomily, resulting from a number of factors including the number of similar alternatives at launch, blizzard reputation and following, and timing just to name a few.

no mmo will ever reach those numbers again.

Im not saying Kotor will succeed or fail, we just cant use WoW and the measuring stick of success.  Thats like saying any software company that doesnt post Microsoft like numbers is a failure.

Sorry i have to agree that this thread is a littler ridiculous with a bunch of unfounded responses. The entire premise of the thread is vague and ambiguous. All these sales and sub numbers are also worthless. I agree with an earlier comment. I think it is the 'hard core' niche sandbox type gamers that will never be satisfied and are part of a dying breed where the sales and subs to the game they attach to (e.g dark fall) are hardly taking over the market.

This game will do exactly what it set out to do. It will create a branching storyline in a large star wars feeling universe allowing for replayability due to the huge story involved with each class and choice you make. How they do that I don't care as long as it's fun and in a world that is fresh. I have faith in bioware and the large improvements I'm seeing with each build they release. I continue to be cautiously optimistic and hardly base the success of gaming on the .0001% of people who post here as compared to the every day people who will most likely enjoy the game.

Jesus christ. That is the most boldfaced idiotic lie I have ever heard concerning this game (and it's pretty much a given, every mmorpg.com thread regarding SWTOR gets 10-15 pure liars). The made no such statement at any time. You inability to comprehend the english language is not license for you to make shit up.  BioWare (being one of the most successful and accomplished game companies to date) would have to have the entire PR team on copius amounts of LSD to say something so utterly stupid that could alienate millions of it's potential customers.   Either you are a troll, or one of the least intelligent people I have ever had the misfortune of losing IQ points to.  Thank you, reading your post has offically made this entire thread that much dumber.

It will have high sales and my bet is that 3 months in it will be at a slow (standard) decrease in player numbers while being around 300K users.

If they pull off what we've seen. Expect more than 300k. A lot more. Long as they don't rush it and make sure that its launch is as smooth as can possibly be. 1st impressions mean a lot in this genre, not just the game itself but support as well. People want to be sure they are getting what they are paying for.

It can't fail in my opinion. Only a fool could mess up something this big.

There is just so much story and dialogue in this game for its to even be finished (as in get to the end game) so quickly. Plus the fact that it's Bioware and the fact that it's Starwars. It can't fail......and I mean fail as in closing the servers and calling it quits with the updates, not "it doesn't have 12 million subs in the first month like WoW does....drrrrrrrr"

That's a little overboard. I understand that common practice is to berate someone you don't agree with on the internet, but really? Everyone is dumber for reading his post? I'd like to think he's probably just misinformed, just as you are, stating that you believe this hardcore market could number "millions of it's potential customers". Try hundreds of thousands, if that. Hardcore is a dying breed, as much as that might bother some of us, but it's something we're going to have to get used to over the coming years, because we aren't important anymore, and a majority MMO's aren't being developed with us, hardcore gamers, in mind (there are exceptions, though few exist). I can see where he's coming from, though I'm unsure how much truth there is to his statement, and I get your point, as well. Maybe you could have politely suggested he read up on the news sections or announcements, or even provided a link to be helpful enough to educate this guy. Or maybe he heard something from a source you don't follow, and maybe that source is incorrect - who knows. The point is, why did you have to make your response a personal attack?

Here's where BioWare has said they don't want to cater to non-casuals (lesson eight):

    http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=15386

It's not terribly recent (2007) but I'd be willing to bet it's a part of their core philosophy.  Make of it what you will, but they've discussed it.

I stand by my initial point. Yes I could have suggested he read up (which by spouting pure speculation and calling it fact, it is obvious he is NOT inclined to do) or I could have linked this or that on other fan sites from direct quotes, podcasts and interviews from bioware (which I have already recieved warnings for) or I could have said what I said, which in a nutshell is true. People will read his bullshit and this being the internet, take it for gospel. In doing that he is promoting false impressions and ignorace. On his own part this would be willful ignorance which boils down to some kind of hate about the game. Irrational hate based on misinformation = stupidity.  Those who are not as informed, or new to the concept of TOR believeing his stupid fabricated facts would in essence be making themselves dumber for having even read the thread.

Why should I go out of my way to suggest ways for someone to hate something they have already decided on to hate less? Would you suggest a KKK memeber attend and NAACP couseling session or some bigot attend a sensitivity seminar? I don't know about you, but to me, that sounds like a waste of my breath and both of our time.  I apologize if my manner incensed you a bit, that wasn't my "complete" intention. I simply have no quarter or tolerance any longer for the lies and bullshit. If he had said "I from what I have read don't believe this game will be "hardcore" enough for me"  or  "I hate this game because I believe it's art sucks" or "I hate this game because I hate bioware and the games they make" you would have never heard a peep out of me. Those are informed personal opinions using "I statements".  He presented his statement as fact, told everyone else "THIS IS GONNA HAPPEN!" and presented it in such a was as to seem informed.  Therein lies my problem.  He spoke out of ignorance with no intention other than to confuse and misinform(what other conclusion can I reach with such a massively biased statement?). I feel my angry rebuttal was justified.  Was it harsh. Yup.  And I meant every word of it.  Again apologies to those that might have differing opinions than me. I thrive on valid intelligent discussion, not haters pissing on peoples parades just for the drama it causes. Drama for Drama's sake is the mark of stupidity and ignorace.  The sad part? He'll still most likely buy the game.  I don't know about you, but i would like to keep the giant bags of idiothammers wandering the servers to a minimum. But maybe it's just me.

Right on harvest! I can't stand drama queens either. I certainly don't want them playing beta and giving "suggestions" because it usually means dumbing the game down or changing it from what made it interesting in the first place.

Well for me SW: The old Republic is just another "wow like" mmorpg only bigger and better made. I have only hopes in Guild Wars 2 and TERA because they look totaly differen than WoW/EW clonse/look like mmorpgs.

BIOWARE/EA has done a bang up job so far insofar as advertising this game, etc. However, I think we are getting to a point where MMO fans are starting to demand some innovation and originatility from the companies that develop these games. Let's get down to brass tax and admit that what SWTOR is offering is little different than what any other company offered over the last 7-8 years. Voice overs, cinematic scenes, etc have been readily available before.

I'm sure based on the information handed out so far that SWTOR will be a good MMO, however it is not going to be groundbreaking, define a new genre, etc. and that is the issue.

MMO consumers are just begging for a company to break the mold, take a risk , exercise some creativity and develop a next generation product that will get everyone "addicted" all over again.

SWTOR will probably be somewhat successful (2m subs short term) since it is "Star Wars", however I think the better games are yet to come from developers like Blizzard, CCP, etc who understand the market dynamic vs the cash grab mentality.
