The best thing that I can say about FFXI and the same probably goes for XIV is that it had the friendliest community of people playing based on my personal experience. Overall both the Japanese and Americans were very friendly. I had people that I had just met volunteering hours of their own time to help me do such and such.

I don't know which FFXI you're talking about. Most of the players in XI I've had the "pleasure" of knowing were very racist toward the jp players, and the feeling was definitly mutual. JP players usually had "JP ONLY" /sea comments, and would get offended if you check them (because the "examines you" translates to something different in the JP version). I've met very few genuinly friendly people in FFXI, the XIV community is built up of primarily the same people.
The best thing about XI is...everything, it's the best MMO on the market. The best thing about XIV...well...it's got potential.
In my opinion community is probably one of the most important parts of an MMO. You can have the greatest game in your possession, but if you log into a world chat filled with insults and other childish behavior then that game kind of loses -50 cool points.

Maybe things have changed or you had a bad server. I was on Shiva when it first opened for US customers and played for a couple of years. In almost every group that I had if things went sour..someone always knew a japanese....taru...It was always a taru for some reason and they saved the day.

agreed, but XI is extremely elitest.
I was never in a big LS or anything in FFXI. I can't say that I noticed any elitists. Now Everquest on the other hand back in the day... I don't think some of those people thought of themselves as being elite..instead I think that some thought they were gods. "I spent 4 months camping the last item for my demonbane...now the world is mine!"

I play on carbuncle. it's about 50/50 eng/jp population. when the game first came out the best ls's were jp, now na players dominate endgame (or whatever endgame was considered before the updates). tarus are awesome. don't want to derail topic^.
ffxiv is a decent game, it's ok. really i probably was a bigger fanboy for this game than most. i bought a new pc basically only for this game (i'm eating ramen noodles now for lunch and dinner, hurray!). it's got a lot of potential...but to me it just isn't fun. i'm convinced it will be a great game, i just can't stand to play it now. there are a lot of reasons i personally don't enjoy it over other games right now, but i can see why some people would like it. i love the crafting/fishing, but the fighting just isn't what i was hoping for. the leve quests need to be more upfront with the level of the monsters (some leves are a lot harder than others, although they are the same recomended level). ughh it just sucks because i really wanted this game to be "it" for me. I have a feeling though that in a few months (like xi with the roz expansion) this game will be great. but for everyone playing now, enjoy!

lol i hate to again derail topic, but my uncle plays EQ. he's *the* highest ranked of his class (don't want to give it away) on any server. he bots all the time, buys gold online, is first on his server to beat expansion content when it comes out. pretty much exactly the person you're describing lol.
When I played the Beta I liked the game but I told myself "I wont be itching to play it constantly like I did FFXI".
I was wrong.
I really don't get how people can say there is nothing to do in this game. Just because you dont have a quest telling you to do something you're not allowed to do it?
After doing some leves on my Pugalist I went fishing. Ive always loved fishing and the fact that FFXIV makes it so much more engaging then just wait until your catch something or click when the lure bobs is awesome. I then went and cooked some cod I caught, the crafting system is equally as thought provoking and interesting. I still havent gotten the hang of it completely. Now this is where both FFXI and FFXIV shine for me, seeing the Salted Cod sitting in your inventory gives you a feeling of pride and accomplishment. Im working on Armorer now so I can wear equipment I made too. Its one thing to just have an item and wear it, but totally different when you spent hours collecting the materials, and after a few failures were finally successful on crafting it.
I understand that some people think its dumb that you have to spend so much time doing things other games have so easy, like crafting, but thats why its so much better to me. Everything is worth the effort. Youll get some gear from quests or many bosses, but everything you craft will have a worth to it.
I'm overwhelmed by how much I want to do. Now that my Pugalist is a bit higher level I want to make gear for it. I want to make a new skillet for myself for cooking, a new rod and bait for fishing. I want to make more food to sell. I want to level up so I can kill some Salamanders and Gobbue and see what they drop. I want to explore and find more places to fish and catch new different things.
People also dont give enough credit to be able to have all classes on one character, its really great. Being able to mix and match skills as well is really sweet. I hate having to make alts and redoing much of the same content. Playing a different class on FFXIV is nothing like just playing an alt. You have access to all of your other jobs skills and dont have to go trading to use items or money. You also dont have to go around collecting all the teleport points again. Plus, your physical level is shared between all classes so each class you level up has it a be easier than the previous.
I understand its not the game for everyone, but I had to wait in a queue to log in on Saturday and its not even the standard release yet! There are currently seventeen packed servers, I bet more will have to be open. The game is good and going to be very popular. Saying its going to fail or SE messed up is just silly. Its fine though, as others have said, most people arent here because their playing the game and enjoying it.
Agreed, especially with the red part here.
To the OP: I don't know why you think he's lying. If you read through this thread there's just as many people that say they love it as say they hate it, and it's pretty easy to see why people hate it.
1. They don't use a controller. It costs 10 bucks and instantly makes the UI the best UI you've ever used (minus the current lag but it was just released so give that some time).
2. They play it like WoW. They expect to be just a solo-quest grind to max level, when it is not. In fact, the fatigue system and guildleve limit is in place specifically so you can't do that. But once they run out of leves to do by themselves, they don't bother grouping. Most probably aren't in a linkshell. They won't take up crafting even though it is like half the game, and it is fun (this post here describes why it is so fun). They won't gather or take the time to realize there's cool things in the game like the battlewarden system at camps.
They're so used to playing WoW and WoW clones that if there's not a solo quest telling them where to go next, they think the game is over.
I expect the gross negativity to subside over the coming month once people realize the game is different and that's a good thing, and all the people that just want to solo quest their way through a game go back to WoW, Everquest 2, AOC, Aion, LOTRO or basically every MMORPG that came after WoW with the exception of this one. Hell even freaking Guild Wars was mostly solo questing if you didn't skip to the PVP.
Seriously, people have been clamering for years for something different and we finally get it and people are blowing their tops because it's different. Go figure...
I don't know if this was said but regarding the caster having to click the mob, click the spell, click the mob again, You don't actually have to do this.
You click the mobs once. This selects the mob
Then push the number of the spell (ala how all skill bars work)
Then hit enter. Voila spell casted.
Want to cast another?
tap the number related to the spell, as the mob is already selected you don't have to click it again
Hit enter again.
Made spell casting a breeze, and it was just as fast as many other MMOs.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.
Is ToR going to be good? Dude it's Bioware making a freaking star wars game, all signs point to awesome. -G4tv MMo report.
Since there are more threads that don't like FFXIV than there are that do I'll try to tilt the scale a bit. I just want to hear from the people that love this game.
What aspects of the game do you like? Do you feel that it is a major improvement from FFXI (If you answer yes then please please please go into details)?
I mean really? I can understand you having some fun with the game. But I think your 15 posts reflects how many MMOs you have played. This must be your first. Or this is your only encounter with an MMO. But seriously,,,,,do you work for SE?
I think your misunderstanding what hes trying to do.
The point of this thread was to see if people could post something good about the game, as there are many threads saying how people hate the game. It's so people who see this game can make a good decision by looking at any of the negative posts and taking a look at this one.
I think it's a good thing. It allows the "fans" of the game to be put in a light other then defenders all the time.
Edit: regarding post counts, i hate when people do this. post counts mean nothing. absolutely nothing. Someone who never plays an MMO could have thousands of post. While someone who plays MMOs all the time could have as few as 5. It's just means they don't post or are new to the forum.

And which mmo's would that be ... I'm curious to know what games use the same "are you sure you wanna cast this spell" schema.

Hm he must be the elite demonbane possessor that I was talking about earlier. I bow to your 125 posts o great one.
I've personally liked MMOs that really encourage grouping like FFXI. I feel thats what an MMO is all about....social interaction. I really don't see any point of an online game if you're going to solo most of the way. There are tons of single player games out there that are much better than any MMO as far as solo content is concerned.
Made spell casting a breeze, and it was just as fast as many other MMOs.

*sigh* allow me to explain, I actually never said it was like another game, in the way of having to confirm to cast, i said it was as fast as other MMOs, which it is. It really doesn't take that long to click on a target, hit 1, enter, 2 enter, 3, enter 1, enter, so on and so on, sure it may be a tiny bit slower like by 1 second but thats not enough to say it's a chore. I said it made it a breeze because all you had to do was target, click a number, hit enter, most people are saying that spell casters are "difficult" to cast because you have to click the mob, click the spell, click the mob, i'm just showing a different way. I think your trying to change what i'm saying to make it sound more complicated then it is.
as for your question, well almost every game you cast nearly as fast (battles take me around 30 seconds to a minute) other then asian grinders, games like EQ/EQ2 take about 30 seconds to a minute to complete a fight. So does WoW, not Eve because that takes longer. alot longer to kill a target then 30 seconds to a minute. But there you go.
Help me Bioware, you're my only hope.

If you're using a controller the 'Are you sure' part is pretty much nonexistent. It's there so that you can switch targets if you need two. If you're using a controller, you just double-tab your confirm button, and the spell casts. It's painless.
