If ToR and Pre-CU SWG "Classic" servers hit live at same time, which would garner the most players on day 1?
Think about it, how many folks, who have never played SWG but have read about it on every mmo forum in existence would be interested in trying it as apposed to trying out a New game like ToR?
ToR may be the most anticipated new/big budget game but wihich one has had the most forum press over the last 6-7 years?
Tbh, and I have actually spent alot of time thinking about this, I think Pre-CU SWG "Classic" servers would have more interest then ToR. Granted, it's just my opinion based on my own observations of all the different game forums I have experienced but I still see more "Press" for Pre-CU SWG then I do ToR.

Pre cu is dead and isn't coming back. no reason debating something that doesn't exist.
You know what I'm one of those disgruntled SWG vets and wish the NGE never happened, but these discussions really need to just go away. We've had them before and the rest are just the same thing worded a different way.
Since I've never played TOR, I don't know.
But I'll put my money on TOR. I played SWG when it first came out and it was riddled with bugs and gameplay was sloppy and inconsistent.
I still liked the game, but I have a feeling TOR is going to come out in pretty good shape.
Vocal minority
Nobody has played TOR (outside of demos and testers can't exactly share)
Sandbox isn't popular
I've played SWG including Pre-Cu and have no intentions in returning to it even if they added classic servers
Finally, classic servers aren't happening. Basically, I don't agree with you. These topics need to die.
Everyone posting to this point, think on this, I see people posting every single day that they "want something different" then the "norm".
SWG was different from the "norm" in so many ways, which do you think would actually garner nore interest and players?
Game Does Not Exist.
Strangely, the game that is more similar to what people are used to.
It's only been about 2 minutes, sorry we still don't know everything about TOR, come back when we're able to play it.
Based on your own experience of reading mmo forums, if it did exist on the same day ToR released, which do you think would garner more interest?
One is in beta and one is dead and gone. One has obviously been played and the other has not. how should i know.
It really depends on who you ask.
TOR and SWG pre-cu bring different things to the table.
SWG:
Type: Sandbox
Allows players to tell their own story
has strong crafting.
Wide Open worlds
Allows player housing on the ground.
Allows travel in space (ala Eve type space: fly around on your own and select your targets)
Now TOR has to go on some speculation as the game isn't out yet.
Type: Theme park
Fully Voice quest (npc and PC) and choices in those quest
Based on Kotor Series.
Provides 2 factions
Action based space combat (some would call on the rails)
Allows player housing in your ship
For those looking for a movie style or what you typically would find in a single player video game (the game is not single player and i know that ), they will go straight for ToR, while those that want a sandbox type will go to SWG. The only problem SWG faces is one, people who played SWG, already did it, while ToR provides a newer fresh landscape and things to do. Second off. Both would have to be by different companies because as it stands now. SWG is linked with SoE and many people don't like them. While ToR is linked with BW which alot of people like.
But typically if your asking my opinion on the matter? the answer would be ToR. It's not cause i like it, (i do but thats not the reason), it's cause most people prefer theme park over sandbox. It's pretty apparent as 90% of the games are theme park and thats cause most of the people play those type. So I think ToR would do best because thats still what people are looking for.

Is this a serious post, come on now?
SWG was doing ok for it's time. A classic server could work, I HOPE they do finally bring one out to shut a lot of people up. TOR will probably destroy the box sells, sub peak and maintained subscribers that SWG has/had.
As far as gameplay goes, I kinda liked SWG, it was my mmo after all, but I've moved on to better games and have no intentions in ever returning. So far TOR looks like a far better game.
Yes, serious post, Pre-Cu SWG has had a hell of lot more Press since it's demise then ToR has had since it, creation.
When Pre=CU was lost, the mmo community numbered in the 100k's, 6-7 yrears later we are in the 10's of millions.
How well would Pre-CU SWG fair now?
"Since it's demise", so we have come to the conlusion that this is negative press, right?
Do you think that people are going to forgive SOE at once if they give you back the game that was taken from you? Do you honestly believe they have the resources to keep both clients up to date, you do realize your Pre-CU servers only "updates" would be in the form of a cash shop, cleverly hidden in a card game? The answer is no, SWG will never recover. I'd dare say its popularity then, now and it's future will never reach what TOR will be, even with the addition of a classic server.
I'll use FFXIV as an example as it's the closest thing to a sandbox that has released since about 2003 (OFC It's not a sandbox). Aside from the many gripes being made over the UI. One of the biggest complaints has been about content and gear. The new demographic doesn't seem to grasp the good things about a player economy or socialized gaming. They only see the negatives, no instant gratification.
I think a game like Pre-cu would send these players over the edge, it wouldn't be pretty IMO.

About as well as a pimple on one's ass I imagine. It died for a reason. Stop digging up the corpse and teabagging it.

pre-cu is dead...making posts like this only hurt the wounds....
and TOR (i expect to see T.V.commercials) would but in the gaming community a classic SWG would be huge
And we have someone who hasn't the slightest idea what happened to SWG.
Thank you for posting.
SWG was hemorrhaging subs before the CU, these changes were made for a reason, all though I admit they went about it totally wrong. A classic Pre-cu server would be far from huge, the only difference it would make is on websites like these. The vast amount of SWG whine posts (Which are often made by the same people) would vanish, and for that I would be thankful.
One upon a time there was an "amazing" game called Star Wars Galaxies. It died not with a bang, but with a queef. The End.
That about sums it up.

Would it be profitable? Maybe. But theres a few things first.
First off. SoE would have to clear up their image or give the pre Cu to another company. As it stands (at least the people on these forums, i can't ask the rest of the majority so they will have to do ) the people on these forums don't trust SoE anymore to run the game the "right" way.
If they cleared up their image or gave it to another company, it would have to do the following things.
first off, they would have to update its graphics. It looked nice back in the early 2000s but as it stands now it's getting a bit dated (F2P games look better and a P2P game really should blow Free ones out of the water). People like graphics and they like what looks nice and I think most people don't like the graphics looks now of SWG (i could be wrong here)
Second, whoever is running it has to make some kind of commitment that they won't change it (i'm referring to the core mechanics, another words don't repeat what SoE did or anything similar) and will keep it the same, and if it's SoE a really strong one.
Finally theres gotta be new content of some sort. A new planet or a new solar system but they gotta bring something new to the table to appease the they already did everything problem.
The biggest problem SWG faces though is it was already released and the changes were made, the bridges were burned. People tend to hold grudges and when you "waste" a couple years of their life in one fell swoop. They tend to hold it a long time.
But if it stood up now. No history. updated graphics. noone has seen it before? yeah i suppose it could be profitable, but remember most of the people prefer theme park over sand park so ToR is still likely to win out, but SWG could do well for itself to.
Okay theres a few places here where people might get mislead by what i said (which is very easy to happen on forums)
The right way: This means that they can run a successful and fun MMO instead of what people refer to SWG now. a mess of a game.
When you waste a couple years: This means work in the game, not really wasting your life. But all the time that went into the game and avatar, people spend years getting their character to where it is.

I had some good times in SWG, but also some very frustrating times. I remember rolling a bounty hunter... I'd get a BH mission, send out a probe droid, get to the right planet, track my mark, and after a hell of a long time and too much effort, I would finally get to the designated spot and the mark would be spanwed inside a damned tree, or not at all. Don't even get me started on trying to hunt Jedis. I would then go on to the SWG forums and vent my frustrations along with 100s of other ticked off BHs. Devs would then go crazy trying to censor all the negative posts.
I admit, I LOVED the concepts behind SWG. PvP by way of shoving a Jedi's lightsaber up their own rearends... brilliant - when it worked. Housing, crafting, resource gathering, setting up a shop in a busy area when you were lucky enough to get some good land... again - I loved these aspects.
The reality was... instead of fixing existing bugs, SOE decided to change things drastically. I got sick of the Jedi Revamp because of that damned village. I hated the notion that you could only progress so far because of that village schedule. Bugs after bugs, I quit shortly thereafter before the fancy ships came out.
The reality is... SWG is gone. We need to just let it go.
Hindsight will always be 20/20.
"...and with that cryptic comment, I'm off to bed!"
TOR vs Pre-CU SWG?
I prefer Pre-CU SWG's gameplay anyday of the week, any hour. It's called "Freedom" in gameplay.
Anyways, there's got to be alot of IF'S if I go back to Pre-CU SWG.
a) The Pre-CU SWG / classic server(s) would be nice, but I want to see commitment in improving the game but still keep to the core Pre-CU gameplay.
b) A major factor before I even consider going back to SWG: Is SOE handling it? If so, they can still go f**k themselves and go to hell.
If the factors above are met, I'd be very curious to see if the community it does develop was anywhere near the same as the one that existed before SOE told everyone to suck on it or f**k off. The player community back then was large, vibrant, and tight knit. Something I haven't seen in other MMORPGs since Pre-CU SWG's days. Other communities I've seen have some of those characteristics, but not all three anymore.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
I never played SWG. I understand that what is written by its "fanbois" here is just "coloured" memoreies of this game and how it was. Still iw ould be wiling to try it especially compered the freedoms of both Tor amd SWG.
I have no doubt ToR will be a fine RPG game. Bioware is good at doing those. I do question the whole MMO aspect of it as it stands and on the info i have right now. SWG seems to be more in my ballpark as i love sandbox games. If both the concepts had the same budget and were done at the same time i would assume i would choose SWG.
Still i am going to give TOR a try. I hate it how it r@pes the SW universe. How linear it is. How single player it seems. I am vocal aboit this issiues but i am willing o give th game a try. I may not like the "parts" of it... But its the end product that counts.
Now starting SWG as it is right now... seems rather pointless. Sure you have fine memories of it i bet but its been years... And i bet it did not age well.
