Most successful doesn't really matter. Hopefully, both are very successful, making their companies lots of moolah, and promoting further MMO developments.
I suspect that SWTOR will do better out of the gate, due to IP and advertising.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
Although I won't be playing it, Swtor will be more successful definitely, there is no need to do any research at all. There are just too many sides to be supported here, first and foremost Bioware and the SW IP. I know many people that have never touched any MMO and many that you can even hardly call them "gamers" and still they are waiting the day this game will release. In other words: everyone and their mom is going to play swtor. There is no doubt for all the trusted gw fans and those waiting for "a better mmo", but if I had to make an estimate I'd say that even the man I'd never thought, will still be playing swtor. Will it be good or bad? I think this is the first game that I'll say, it really doesn't matter.
In terms of money, SW:TOR will be more successful. They will probably outsell GW2 and have their monthly income. GW2 will lose bad if we talk about financially.
However, in 1 years time, if we were to gather the top 50 or so gaming sites and their reviews, I can see GW2 having a higher praise. Beyond the name of BioWare and Star Wars, one can argue there isn't much to offer. Of course, honest reviewers will judge beyond the titles. Those types of reviews will look at the actual game and score from there, that's where I believe GW2 will be the victor.
I say Guild Wars 2 will be more succesful simply because of the deep and effective storyline, they even have a book to support it and the jaw dropping graphics not to mention that it is the top voted on the hype pole on this site.
Wouldn't the hype meter on this site represent what will be popular with people who frequent this site?
Because in the real world (i.e. not the MMORPG.com bubble where sandbox games are superior and we pine for SWG pre-NGE) there is far, far more hype for SWTOR.
I suppose the SW franchise is bounds and leaps more widely known, but how many SW fans are MMO players?
Just because someone loves the films and wears a Han Solo T-Shirt doesnt mean he likes PC gaming, online gaming or is keen on the concept of a game that costs recurring fees over time.
the hype meter on sites like this is a better indication than the hype meter on the real world from people who dont know what a MMO is.

But that's the thing, they might become players, at least of this game, because of the IP.
Mention Star Wars and people know about it. Fans will be interested and it might pique their interest to at least try it.
But Guild Wars? Average person doesn't know it.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
No story is going to keep people subbed over content.
Funny how you people think that this game will have no content only if the beta testers could speak, they would laugh at you and are for these comments.
Also GW1 had 20 levels so you call that game play, GW1 wasnt really even a MMO, more of a RPG...
Only reason people played it was because it was a one time fee nothing more, I though GW1 was ahorrid game..
GW2 will be nothing more than GW1 .
So making a comment saying a game will be all story atleast SWTOR WILL have one, GW will have no story and be a lame game.... period just like GW1, thsi forum is full of people who will not pay for games, because most rely on daddys CC, or do not have one so they play for games that cost little to nothing ..

This is the thing though. I know at least 10 people who have never touched an MMO, who will play SWTOR, because it s SW. They have no idea what GW2 is and probably never will. So no this and other MMO sites mean nothing with hype meters in the real world.
GW2 will have more active subs imo, its B2P, even if you don't like it, you can still tinker around when bored, its not costing you anything....So no need to 'cancel'
ToR - I have a lot of questions about, but I could see them bringing in more money in the long run, but probably never top GW2 in subs.
I plan on playing Rift, and GW2, looking at Earthrise/ToR, but I have a lot of questions about ToR, I am not a big quester/story person...If the game is 50% fluff, and 50% game, then I probably will hate it, but I can't say, don't know enough.
Earthrise - It has entrigued me, but need to see more.
TERA - Looks to cartoonish with huge weapons, big flashing numbers and such, doesn't appeal to me. (I am signed up for beta, so if I get in,maybe they can change my mind...I am just going off of the movies I have seen).

Sadly Tor is another clone so it will join the ranks of WAR, LOTRO and AOC at being a copycat wannabee.
so GW2 will spank its Butt!
please remember this time that I said TOR would tank... when I said that WAR and AOC would tank nobody listened and I was in closed beta on both of them

This is the 45th post in this thread and I don't feel like reading the others. But, I don't see SW:TOR being accepted very well and GW2 (as far as I know?) is going to be on the same payment model as GW1.
SW:TOR is going to fallow the footsteps of WAR & LOTRO. Bye Bioware. You had a good run. It's too bad you're not going to be around much longer. But hey, you probably should have sunk $150mil into something that was at least semi original.

Hmm.... TOR will be a good game. The story will be the best story out of any MMO known to date. It will be a quality MMO.
GW2 should be a good game aswell. I'm Suprised at how these forums we have people that will lie to themselves and the MMO community just to make one game look better than the other.
I think they are both gonna be big hits for 2011, there is no need to trash one game here just because you are a fan of another.
Which one will be more successfull? I can't call it, at this point. I kind of lean toward gw2 because for starters you don't need a sub, it has very nice graphics, and some innovation going on in gameplay mechanics. Other than that I think TOR will do very well.
And I know many people who are currently playing WOW who could give a care about the Star War's IP or Bioware and have no intention of even giving it a try.
Do the two groups cancel each other out? Who can say?
Actually... When I ask my former WoW guildmates about the future, they first curse ICC for a good 5 minutes, then they talk about SW:ToR. They haven't heard much about GW2 or they are not willing to give it a try because they didn't like GW1. Of course, this is a small sample and may not represent the WoW population...
My takes: I think GW2 will have a bigger initial rush, then SW:ToR will start raking up subscriptions. I think both games are going to cover different demographics. GW2 is going to be for a younger audience who cannot afford subscriptions, casual players who don't want to commit, and the GW1 fanbase. I think SW:ToR is going to be popular amongst the young adult/adult audience.
GW2= Triple-A MMO quality (like GW1), no subscription fee. It would sell well even if it was level capped at 20 and had no persistent world. As it stands, I think it'll sell phenomenally regardless of its quality.
While I'm anxiously waiting for TOR, it's going to be hard judging it as a "success". If the figures online are anything to go by (I'm not saying there are, it's an if), then EA'll need a very successful launch plus lots of long-term subscribers and a decent lifespan to even make a profit. In terms of what's going to be more successful sales-wise, GW2 has already won it. No fees means you attract everybody who's tired of shite free MMOs but doesn't want to pay a sub. That's a whole lot of people.
I wish EA and BioWare the best of luck, and I'm really hoping they revolutionise MMO stories with TOR. But, honestly speaking, people don't play MMOs, or even most games, for the story. You're only a story-oriented player if you love RPGs and BioShock-esque shooters. And the market they'll need to hit in order to make TOR a success is much, much bigger than every story-loving gamer on the planet.

WAR does not focus heavily on story. It also has those PQ, while they are not exactly like gw2 live dynamic event system they are closest thing to them.
I will be getting both gw2 and TOR...
TOR for the story, and hopefully they have some good pvp. Than gw2 I want to check out the dynamic event system and some other things in that game.
Believe it or not some people actually like the idea of a good story with VO in their game. It makes the leveling process seem more enjoyable, than just grind to the top gameplay that we have seen in other games.

Believe it or not some people actually like the idea of a good story with VO in their game. It makes the leveling process seem more enjoyable, than just grind to the top gameplay that we have seen in other games.
