I remember taking my time to get my first 60. It was fun back then. I remember the lie of 60-70 supposedly taking as long. I remember after the blink of the eye to get the first 70, that it took no time to get two more to 70. I remember the lie of 70-80 supposedly taking any period of time as well...and it taking no time to get from 70 to 80. It took no time to get another 1-80 toon, so I went ahead and got the other two 70s to 80. When I realized how fast I could get one of the slowest leveling builds to 50... I lost interest in alts. Then I just lost interest in the game.
They may as well just give you level 80 toons, have you log into a game lobby like any you would find with a FPS or RTS...and call it a day.
Then again, it is hard to blame them for making it easier and easier to level a toon - they realized that there is nothing to do at 70...nothing to do at 80.
Well, you can develop carpel tunnel by leveling around 80 levels of gearscore (look at the stats on fresh 80 gear vs. raid gear)... but oh yeah, that is why I mentioned the game lobby thing, duh!
Still, really cannot blame them for making it easy - though, I think they should have done that mechanic only for those who got a character to max. New players miss out on so much that there was - because they can sneeze and find themselves waiting a few minutes to do the next random heroic...
...just saying.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

hehe. your a bit behind the times.. gearscore is no longer the tool used to determine raiding gear.. now you need a good wow heroes score.. well .. at least it isnt an addon.. as for the game being easy.. definitely. easy to learn and play.. but.. go into a raid with that attitude and you'll probably end up not being reinvited.. raids are not 'easy' even as dps - though dps is the easiest part of raiding. the only people who have nothing to do at level 80.. probably are trying to play the game solo.. and its not designed for that.. sure you can level to 80 solo.. but your missing a big part of the game, and you can't take part in a lot of stuff when you get to 80.. random heroics btw, arent what makes the game fun at 80.. though they do provide you with some 'entry level' experience for what raiding will be like.. and you earn emblems so that you can buy the gear to start raiding, or pvp if thats your thing.. or both if you really enjoy grinding emblems (does anyone ??) well whatever.. if you can't socialise this game isnt for you.. as you need to be able to work as part of a team to really get the most out of this game.

The WoW Heroes score was the better score - but everybody was hyped up on gearscore, so it was pointless arguing with them at the time. I do not think I have played WoW since...er...either March or May I think - forget.
How can you say raids are not easy? Read the walkthroughs, be geared enough, pay attention to your addons for alerts on what you read, and do not screw up. Raids are like recipes for cupcakes - not like trying to cook fine cuisine at a five star restaurant.
As for socializing, most of us found we could socialize doing things that were actually fun - slowly people just left, we did not stop talking - but we saw no point in continuing with the game lobby chat presented by WoW.
If I remember correctly, when I played earlier this year - I was the first person in the guild to have logged in for over a year - some going back two years or more. Yet we still socialize to this day.
I mean, you do realize what you have said WoW is at level 80? A gear check progression taking place in a 3D chatroom...
...lol, makes me think of that guy complaining that games are like Facebook. Course, he would be that solo person you would want to address - and I would agree - while you can solo most things in most games, some content is going to require some form of social interaction.
Heck, you meet people here - socialize - without having to spend $15 a month... though, at times - it does feel like everything is getting repetitive.
Am I an old fart? You could say that. I enjoyed raiding in Vanilla more than Crusade. I enjoyed raiding in Crusade more than Lich King. By the time Cata gets around, figure I can drop the cat on the keyboard and go out for a smoke for all the raiding will be worth...

I like the cupcake analogy... mostly because I like cupcakes... What you're saying is not unique to WOW or mmos, although that's the context where people usually bitch the most about repetitive tasks: anything you do 1000 times (except maybe sex... and eating cupcakes) becomes too easy and not very satisfying. Welcome to MMO endgame! No one, to date, has come-up with something truly original to make continuing playing the same toon at level cap as saisfying as it was getting him there. Sure there are things to do, and some are even fun to do many times. But there always comes a point...

Well, it's all a matter of perspective but any and all time spent in any mmo can be viewed the same way... specially if you spend your time chatting about inane things that are totally irelevant to the game like most do in the trade channels. You don't have to be a full-time hardcore RPer, but I firmly believe you get out of the game only as much as you put into it. Don't know about you but terms like "imersion" and "suspension of disbelief" have become cliches for a reason: they're necessary ingredients that ar3e directly proportional to enjpyment of a fantasy... be it book, film, stand-alone game or MMO.
Anyhow... getting back to the original point of the thread... If you know where to quest and which quests to take and run randoms for gear, you can easily level 1-80 in 4-6 weeks without breaking a sweat... not sure if you get the most enjoyment that way, but doable even for a noob, with or without the Zygor crutch.
Put another way... start leveling a level 1 toon today and he'll be 80 when Cataclysm launches.

My apologies for going somewhat off on a tangent there. It was mainly a case of trying to compare Vanilla, Burning, and King - in regard to the decreasing level of difficulty and the increasing ease/speed of being able to level.
You can see that to an extent in some of the replies - how long it took during various stages of the game compared to now.

About two years, but I kept stopping and starting, including spending over a year in EQ2.
