Blizzard Entertainment has officially announced that the release date for World of Warcraft's latest expansion, Cataclysm, is set for December 7, 2010. The game will retail for $39.99 via box or digital download from the Blizzard store. The collector's edition will retail for $79.99.
"Cataclysm includes the best content we've ever created for World of Warcraft," said CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime. "It's not just an expansion, but a re-creation of much of the original Azeroth, complete with epic new high-level adventures for current players and a redesigned leveling experience for those just starting out.
"With the help of our beta testers, we're putting on the final polish, and we look forward to welcoming gamers around the world to enjoy it in just a couple of months."
The release date for locations outside North America have yet to be announced.

First! I'm probably gonna come back to WoW for this one. Though I'd also have to buy Wrath, too, which is lame and expensive and would suck.
I will probably come back for this as well. the new starting zones might be enough for me to get an alt past 30

So much for all the November speculation.
Most of the Cataclysm changes will be implemented in the next couple of patches. The expansion itself offers little the more you look at it. If you're on the fence and don't care about the new races and the 80-85 content, you do just as well to play the base game before plopping down money on expansions you may not want.

Yea, a fair point and to be honest a surprisingly fair move by blizzard. I can enjoy a lot of the new content without having the buy the game again, and if I manage to get a character up to 80 or decide I would like to play a new race, then I'll spend the money. Same goes with Wrath... I might want to play from 70 - 80 but I really don't like my mage anyway.
Is it just me, or does $40.00 for an expansion seem like a lot? Most new games are 50-60 dollars, this $40 dollar price tag is frustrating.
how about $40 for the expansion and $80 for the collectors edition O.o Nuts I say.. nuts.
I'll buy it because I always get a Collector's Edition, but I have to confess that it's looking like Blizzard is set on fleecing its playerbase for every dollar they can squeeze out of them. I'm not in a guild, don't raid, and hate what PvP brings to a game. I'll explore the hell out of Cataclysm and get whatever achievements I can get solo, and then I think I'll be pretty well done. I'm not liking all the class changes much at all.

it's all about the mind games. 39.99 makes people more comfortable than 40. which is crazy.
Woot! Blizz finally announced.
Unfortunately, it's pretty much the standard right now. My basis for comparison is the CoH going rogue and Everquest new expansions cha chinging in at $39.99
Work hard Play Harder
Well it is a perfect time for new players who nevery played WoW before or even player who never got to max level to start over again fresh. I'm just not sure this will be appealing to veteran players because it seems it is almost a clone copy of TBC. Though I guess if anyone is interested in mmos in 2010 Cataclysm would be #1 on the list this year.
I got into beta for this and for those than enjoy WoW, it will most likely be good. Those that never really got into it, well this isn't going to make you. I never got into WoW, highest i got was 27. It starts off new but eventually its just the same old crap.
Wish they added an authenticator in their offer :X
40$ seems a bit much for an expansion, but they are reworking a lot of old content. 80$ for CE is too much for an in-game vanity pet, a mouse pad, a musical CD, few cards of their trading card game, a book and a 'Making of' DVD. I wouldn't buy it.
I think they are getting a bit greedy since Burning Crusade with fewer End Game content and no major dazzling dungeons even though they raked a lot of cash with their subscriptions, vanity items, account services and tournament fees. Hopefully 2011 will bring some decent competition... Real competition, not half baked games like we've been seeing since 2008...
I know right. I finally have an area of time to look to sell off my stock as the prices get up there from the announcement of the release and the announcement that they sold x million copies in the first weekend. Been waiting for this for that one reason, since I don't find WoW enjoyable and will not be buying it.
Will there be an early start for pre - orders, anyone
MAGA
Just to clarify, Cata adds lvl 80-85 content.
If you aren't a fan of the easy mode, burn your way thru every dungeon with AoE damage, you probably won't notice a big change until you hit the 81+ content. The 1-80 content still plays like current WoW other than the new questing system and the class changes.
Well at least it gives some time to finish up with wrath content first, and then move on to CATA.
going rogue by itself is only 30.
Release date is later than I expected, but it's awesome that a game is actually released during a holiday period. Sick of how all the anticipated titles are released at some of the worst possible times for those of us who are University students.
Playing the beta now its definitely worth the wait. For those of you who are reluctant on getting it, if you dont want to play the new races or do not have a character at 80 then you might want to wait a bit. Most of the game changes are going to be available soon. However there is going to be a great storyline for high levels and eventually some new raids so I would plan on getting it.
Not getting it, stopped caring about WOW a year ago, waiting for TOR. $40 bucks is way too much for an expansion I don't care what's in it. Most expansions are 30 bucks or cheaper.
Why should I go back to the same zones rehashed with a make over to experience the same shitty community. WOW itself is a great game I just don't like the community as a whole. Thanks but no thanks
Gads! That's what I get for not proofreading, especially on Monday morning. Thanks!
That was a big part of my point, that they're only adding 5 measly levels and it sounds like players are herded into two zones for that content, then it's back to the hamster wheel.

I'm playing the Beta also. I have gotten my Mage to 85 on it, and started a new character. The new 1-60 content is great and so is 80-85. GREAT dungeons with actual CC content. Best improvements yet!
