FFXIV will do ok on the PC, not as good as most PC MMOs, but should get about 100k at the least.
The FF MMOs do their best on the platform it was mainly designed for: Consoles. And come the release of the game on PS3, the numbers should climb higher (Mostly in Japan as that is the games main target audience).
Now will FFXIV get the numbers that FFXI got? Probably not. And it's not due to the current state of the game (though that does have some impact on it) but rather the fact that it's an MMO sequel. People who played the first FF MMO will enter the game expecting to recapture the essence of the original, and will be mostly disappointed (as you can already see from a lot of FFXI players). Unlike single player games, high sales really don't indicate success in an MMO, subscriptions do. An MMO can sell millions of copies, and still end up struggling in the long run.
I don't see FFXIV failing or closing down. What I do see is the game quietly fading into the background noise of the genre.
And that's not really a 'bad' thing.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Take a snapshot of FFXIV now...that will be the highest population of active players this game will likely ever see in NA. WIth all the bad press/reviews and well lets face it...the game is crap it wont gain any momentum from here, it will just lose players. WOW will take from that playerbase in December to some degree(as it will other games) and in 2011 we have major MMO contenders going live that further strain FFXIV like SWTOR, GW2, Tera, etc etc. By the end of next year FFXIV will likely be on life support in NA if it even lives that long. Did I mention the game is crap?
