I'm definately confident some players are going to quit.  The reasons will be:
    • Due to their unwillingness to adapt to the game's problems.
    • Niche mismatch - they really weren't the kind of gamer this game would appeal to, but they had to play it to find out.
    • Hardware incompatibility issues. There's always a significant number of players who are simply attracted to the next new thing to come around, whose presense you really can't count to hang around and keep the game populated later. Real life reasons preventing them from having the time or priority to play. ... among other reasons.

So, knowing this, I fully expect to see a drop in general player population since release.  Every game has them.  However, I expect Final Fantasy XIV's retention to be higher than usual, partly because this was the case for Final Fantasy XI.  We may even see the player count stabilize soon because the number of players quitting is less than the number of players joining - that they put up another server indicates that may currently be the case.

To start raising a major stink just because you notice that the current online player levels is lower for this time of day than usual mostly demonstrates you're not aware of a whole lot of the factors that might be behind that.  A hater might grapple on that as a reason why we should consider the game as failing, but it's far from the truth, I know it, the developers know it.

Funny how you didn't mention any of the bad design issues, bugs, missing game features etc as a reason for players to quit. Also, if you think this post was made to raise a MAJOR stink you know nothing about me. But then again i don't see any reason to defend myself or SE for that matter as if my mother owns the company. So you can label me a hater all you like.

Like i said end of month will make things more clear for now it was my curiosity to see decline in population in first week. Now you can continue putting labels on people.

Sure I did.  It's right there.  The game has problems, some players will quit because they're not willing to adapt to them.  Maybe you'd prefer I exaggerate it a bit more?

    Well, lets see.

    • You just started a whole thread on it titled, "lost 2k active players within 5 days of release on Besaid server"

    • 2 posts ago told me you're going to bump it in 30 days.

    • You seem think it's very important to underline a decline in population whose reasons I already explained.

Maybe your definition of "major stink" differs from mine, but I think you met the criteria pretty well.

I wonder if others have noticed somthing similar and decided to jump servers

My original server was going to be Besaid, but it seemed pretty laggy.  I moved to Selbina (the unnoficial ex-ffxi player server) which is still popular but didn't notice as much lag.  So yeah, I at least could account for 1 of the people in this suspect math the OP is doing.

I have been playing on Besaid since September 24th in that time the highest I ever saw the server at was 3,200 on a Sunday afternoon(and yes it was laggy as hell); for the most part I have seen the server at a consistent 2,000 + .

What is needed is someone that can post population data for every day of the week at 2h intervals for a whole 2 months. Before then, all thoughts on server pop are useless.

What matters more is this: How many will be left on 2months and 1day?

Most unhappy players are those who want to see the game they bought succeed, no one likes wasting 50$ for no reason. However, if after 2 months the game is still as buggy/laggy/etc at least 50% of those players will just cancel their subs, not to mention Dec. 7th is a day many look forward to, and others view as a Plan B. (or C)

During the free month, the amount of subs are meaningless, as they will always be inflated, but may be viewed as deflating for several reasons:

    1. Queues/Lag: Many will just hope the next one has better hardware.

    2. Friends/Guilds: If a guild (LS) decides it has to reroll because not doing so locks 50% of their member from the server they play on, players will follow suit.

    3. FPS/Over pop issues: Some will just wait out a week and hope starter areas clear up a bit so they can play.

    4. Chinafarmers: Supposing SE are not lying and they actually ban gold ad spams, chinafarms spam their sites a lot in the first 2 weeks of every game to get as much notice as possible as gold sellers. If the game is a success, the money raked in from 2months into the game and thereafter is worth the CC theft theyve been doing to buy out the game.

Next you have 10% Mr. Negativity spewing "hidden" publicity for other games:

Ex:  In WoW when AoC came out, suddenly the game had thousands of "OMG BUY AOC ITS A WOW KILLER". Blizzard seem to have caught on as 2 weeks after the game was out, AOC was getting filled with "SUCH AND SUCH is SOOOOO much better in WOW". 90% was all about WoW.  Sure there are mr.everydaynormalguy in there, but there are also paid employees of the other companies.

Anyhow, the average attention span of a gamer is "Until the next hyped release", which gives Square-Enix a little less than 2 months to fix their game. If it can`t be done, I am predicting a close in April for FFXIV after an unsuccessful Game Director change in January or February.

Have to add my 2 cents as another Besaid player; never seen pops over 3k. Highest I ever saw was just shy of 2800, but the average I see is about 2000 to 2600 since regular release.

I play on Besaid, and during my normal playtime, 8pm-10pm CST I have yet to notice a drop in server population.

I know my household can account for 2 accounts less on besaid.

After the first day out for CE my friend and I made toons on Besaid but after the server was locked from creating characters for a short time prior to my wife making a toon. We decided to all reroll on Gysahl, rather then wait till whenever when character creation was re-enabled.

My two accounts and two friends accounts also left Besaid because of the lockdown. Had several other RL friends who couldnt' roll with us there so we all moved off Besaid to set up home on one that wasn't locked down. I'm betting thats all thats being seen, the lockdown has caused alot of CE to move around once thier non-CE friends got ready to play with them. Making anything more out of it than that right now is just assumptions and guesses, nothing more.

Before someone asks me how i know about numbers. You can do this yourself through party search function in game. Now to test it further i checked during JP, EU and US primtime and results do not vary much. Most amount of players are on during JP prime time. US has decent population but EU prime time has lowest amount of players online.

Now i know it may not mean anything buy losing 2K players within 5 days doesn't seem good news to me. Even fansites like FFXIV core are full of unhappy players quitting game due to lack of AH, no mail system, laggy interface, SP bugs..pheww list is too long.

What about those who are on different servers? has anyone tried to keep a check on population numbers and if yes how considerable is fall in numbers?

MMORPGPRESS quote 7% of people have cancelled within a fortnight of subscribing. That might not sound like much, but it's a greater %age for a game which is a week old.

    Opinions please.

I did sortlike tests for other MMO's.

Best way to do this is indeed do it on several days and sevral time frames, like a sunday evening and/or saturday afternoon plus one or 2 weekday evenings, and then do it again after a few weeks. I've found that to be the most reliable to get an impression of trends, because the PCU numbers (Peak Concurrent Users) can fluctuate hugely within a week.

In this case an interesting measure is doing it again 5 weeks after launch, because then you'll have the resub numbers after the month of free play has passed.

Not that you made any effort to prove OP wrong? i am from besaid and average active player population was 3K which has gone down to 1900 to 2200 on average.
