WoW has hit 12 million subscribers!
A great milestone for WoW. Goes to show, a FUN game is going to be more popular than a tedious, boring game.

Lol, these numbers are pre Cata as well (china just got the wrath expansion). Blizz has a shot at 13 million with the Cata expansion in the West.
should be interesting to see what numbers do get reported (im guessing they will) once cataclysm is released, i think its probably the only really big game (or expansion in this case) that a great many people are really waiting on arriving.. haters can hate all they want, WoW is, and remains, the biggest subscription based MMO out there... i wonder how many of them .. secretly that is.. actually play the game themselves
Good, keep all the kids and insta-win players over there in WoW. We don't want them anywhere else.
just goes to show that there's 12 million little kids out there who love to click and wait.... go kill trolls picking daisies while they should be destroying a town... and most of all love games full of elitists.
Even as a wow player I was a little shocked by this. I understood China would boost the numbers, but I thought tons of people have left the game (like me), hating WOTLK, and waiting for cata...oh well.
-I want a Platformer MMO
거북이는 목을 내밀 때 안 움직입니다
They have and are still (will probably temporarily change when cata hits) been declining in NA and EU. It's China that's making the numbers so ridiculously inflated.
It's a combination of the fact that China finally got Wrath, and that in China the payment model is significantly different, as is how Blizzard counts "players" there. In China you pay per hour to play, and you don't even have to buy the game itself. There's no trial of the game either, you just pay for an hour, if you don't like it you stop playing. That's where the numbers get skewed. Blizzard counts anyone who logged into an "internet cafe" (aka a china account) at all, in the past 30 months, as an "active player". Even if they play for a minute, log off, and never play again. Consider this with the new expansion... a lot of people coming back to try the game again, or for the first time, not all necessarily sticking with it
I dont know honestly. Anyone who is going to play WoW...has likely already played it. I doubt there is some untapped Western Audiance that is somehow WoW-Naive
.....perhaps Texas
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Yes but the numbers represent an active subscription. Not everyone is actively playing it. With the release of expansions, a good amount of people do come back so it isn't out of the question.
u mad bro?

With over 12 million subs announced recently, I fairly don't much doubt the OP's claim. Not dying, that is.
I dont know who owns Blizzard now, but when you realize how much income they are making from Wow and yet they still wont do anything about the old classic Diablo2.
I have just played Diablo2 online and it is a Cesspit of hacks / cheats / bots and item sites, how a number one rated Games Company can allow this to happen is beyond belief.
Shame on you Blizzard.
Good for wow. Fun is subjective though, I found wow to be tedious and boring the last few years of playing.
No, we Texans have had WoW come and go, we're more interested in riding our horses, firing our six shooters, wearing silly cowboy hats and boots, and of course milking cows. WoW was just a short-term fad for us.
I only care about US subscribers, which they never published, but at least in the early days when it was released less globally we could feel like the numbers meant something. Now they truly don't. The US population has been sliding for a while and that's what's important.
Why? Because if a game is popular in china but not here, then who cares? This is mmorpg.com, and english site, with mostly americans posting and reading. English speakers who need to play with other english speakers in order to get full enjoyment of the game. Not only that, but net cafe's and non-monthlies allow number inflation.
Wow's US servers have been in decline for a long time. Heck there are lots of dead PvP servers. Do you know how long it's been since they opened a new one?
Sometimes I'm angry WoW is so popular, afterall it would be better to have 4 mmos with 3mil. subs each but then I think.. At least Blizzard knows how to make games. They don't make preety graphics and put boring gameplay. Maybe if Blizzard crush all those other mmo's devs will learn something from them.
WoW took all the features present in every half baked Korean free to play MMO.
Then they added a franchise.
Then they took the only thing in those Korean games even remotely resembling difficulty, the grind, and removed it.
So you are left with instant gratification 'fap and zip' gameplay that everyone who is bad at videogames can feel good in.
Just wondering why would WoW grow more due to Cat.?
Wouldn't Cat. appeal more towards those who already are playing or have left some time ago and re-sub?
Also how are the subs counted, are the subs counted from day 1 and just added who entered, are those who left left out from the sub-count?
I don't know if I'm the only one that feels this way, but I'm actually glad that WoW is such an unbeatable behemoth of a MMO, it means that competing products will have to innovate in order to make a difference. So far, all the "WoW killers" that intended to take its place by merely copying it and just adding shinier graphics or different IP have failed.
So, more power to WoW and Blizzard! Make the competing studios abandon the comfort zone and risk something already!
This is good for Blizzard and the industry as a whole, as gamers mature some will move on to other mmo's as well.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
As someone who as at least tried about every AAA mmo out there I would say you dont have to worry about the WOW players coming to any other game , at least anything released right now.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
well.. also true.. WoW players are used to games that work as intended, arent half finished, (or half baked) so no need to worry about them leaving WoW anytime soon.. i mean. if your used to driving a Ferrari .. chances are your not gullible enough to let someone try and persuade you to swap it for a clapped out banger that the wheels fall off of every time you try and turn a corner....
I agree. Playing other mmo's make you appreciate what blizzard does.
WOW isnt great because it has 12 million players. WOW has 12 million players because its great.
Nah we play wow too. Had some missionaries come buy and showed us the game.
