I quit playing MMO's, hell, games period in May. I decided to rejoin the worl of the living and have been having fun. Lately though, free time has been short, so I decided "why not play a game?" Well, to my surprise and pleasantly I might add, FFXIV was to be released a lot earlier than I expect. Being that I'm a Final Fantasy fan, due to their awesome character building and story, I decided to pick up the game.
Well, since I don't have a lot of free time, I played ultra casually, since if I had enough free time to do something outside of my place, I'd do so, since I have more fun spending time with people than playing a video game. At any rate, I only played 6-8 hours, with a couple of them spent learning the game mechanics. I wasn't put off by the fact that the game was different or that I had to invest time to learn new mechanics.
I decided to unsub, because I just didn't find the game exciting. I got to level 8, and I participated in the activities I would participate in for the entire game (I think, since I don't know what lies further on in the game concerning grouping). All I know is I have no interest in crafting, the guildleve's were boring, and I didn't like having to rely so much on other players to get new gear and weapons. I didn't get any drops, and the only item rewards I got replaced the same item slot rewards I got in previous guildleve's. I also prefer a change in appearance at least every five levels to keep things exciting. The only two ways I've overhead to get item upgrades were through item crafting, or buying something from one of the guilds at level 20.
I acknowledge my lack of knowledge of the game, but the entire point of the game is to capture your attention and keep you interested. I just didn't get that from this game, so I'm taking another hiatus from gaming, instead of paying $12/mo for a game that doesn't make me want to play it.
I wish everyone the best of luck, and would be interested to hear how everyone else is fairing in the game. Maybe I'm missing something truly exciting.

Only thing I'm really sorry is that I have not read http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/finalfantasy14/review.html?page=2 score before made purchase. And based on my first impressions ... at Gamespot have been even too kind to them. Game is total disaster. At least as for MMO goes. Despite this I guess somebody will love it and I'm not against that. The worst spent money for any game in my life.
I would be canceling my sub... IF I KNEW HOW. The website dealio is like a trap to keep people subscribed for eternity!
To unsub do I have to cancel my main subscription, or stop paying for a "Option". I think an option is my damn character which is charged seperately to the primary billing. How do I just cancel the primary billing ghawwwhd
This is one of the rare games where everything sucks! Not only gameplay or controls. And I'm not hater of SE or FF series ... quiet opposite. Purchased only because of FF lore and SE despite did not heard a lot of good. This game forced me to change my mind.
Only complain i do not have is that installation and patching went pretty fast for me.
Have spent maybe 2 hours before understanding what the hell they want me to do to start play. And around 20 mins to unsub. But do not ask me if i remember. :-)) Was kinda random guessing.
Imagine an MMO where you actually have to EARN your equipment! All my prayers have been answered. I hate these WoW cloned so called new games where everything is practically handed to you with little to no effort whatsoever. Maybe there is hope for the future of MMORPG's after all. Nice to see game companies do still exist that dares to do things different.
Hes right though (with this topic at least). if random loot drops and easy end-game routing is all that people care about then this genre will forever be stagnant.

Thank you birdy!!
Yeah I guess i was bored but with this one I think it might be time for me to go to bed now.. 3:45 AM and goodnight!
Hmm... once we traveled walking, later used horses ... now using cars. If you think company selling horses for travel can make money ... be my guest.
But no, XIV is bad and not because wow or any other. I really hope for something new. But new in sense new brand of car not new brand of horse.
The irony here is that, after a little while, all of those things that are so hard-earned right now will be so commonplace as to have almost no value whatsoever. With a system like FFXIV's, all those tradeable armors will become useless for their original owners in time, not to mention their production of other armors to sell or skill on. Eventually, the market will be flooded with low level, and later, higher level armors to the point that they will cost little more than what they'd vendor for - if that. A new player in a few months time will be able to completely skip all of the hassle and not really have to even try and "earn" all their equipment at all. The only exception to this would be items that require a rare material (such as a drop from an NM), but even with those, there will eventually be ample supply for players with a bit more gil than average. Even then, they can skip all the hassle of actually having to find/camp such an NM.
At least with loot drops you'd have to actually go out and fight for them yourself. IMO, this has a lot to do with why FFXI started tagging items RARE/EX so that players who wanted the best gear would be required to actually earn it themselves. The bottom-line is; things are only so hard-earned because the game is so new right now.
Edit: The huge push towards crafting in this game will only exacerbate the issue given that many, many more people will be crafting than otherwise.

In a system such as FF14 everything will eventually have a value, nothing will be completely without worth. An example of this was that in order to make a level 17 armour, you need the level 9 armour to make it...and to make the level 23 armour you need the level 17 armour. You are upgrading everything, so there will never be anything that is completely without value. Another example of this would be in UO, even the crappiest of weapons had a place to be sold.
Personally, I am in favour of this sort of system.

Yea, I would say their billing/account management procedure isn't the most user-friendly. When i tried applying for beta, they had just implemented the mandatory "country of residence" info that you had to declare along with your account. Problem was, there wasn't an option for my country (Singapore). I tried looking for an FAQ or how-to guide addressing this issue on their site, but i couldn't find any. Might have missed something though...
Anyway, i contacted SE about what to do, and after a couple of emails, they kinda directed me back to the account management page. I can't remember what they wrote exactly, but essentially, it was something along the lines of "find out what to do here by yourself".
So after some workarounds (not sure if i violated some TOAs or something ^^), i was lucky enough to be offered a key. But by then, there was just a few days of OB left. And between work, free time and in-game issues, I didn't really get to experience the content much. Sadness.
I really wanna try this game properly, but with the word going round, my confidence in it is too shaky for me to blow $75 outright. I wish there was a 7-day trial or something
Sigh. I digress...

That's a hell of a diversion there. The post I was responding to was, indeed, talking about the system.
Interesting tactic though.

And that's precisely why I said "almost no value".
The simple reality is that these things, with time, will lose the incredible value they have now. It's not to say they won't continue to hold a value and have demand later on, but your level 17 that needs a level 9 armor to make the level 23 armor will still be little more than a skill-up item or a passing piece of armor for a new player down the road. I mean, first of all; that level 9 armor is in massive demand with little supply right now. Everyone struggles to make them and their price is sky-high because everyone wants it to use for now. Down the road, the 17 armor will follow the same pattern, while meanwhile the lower players will continue to struggle for the 9 armor. Eventually, player demand will be caught up with and the level 9 armor will be commonplace, and perhaps even flood the market, driving its value lower and lower. The 17 armor will follow. I don't think I need to make the example for the 23 armor now, do I?
I don't see how this sort of system makes things any more difficult or earned than any other, except for the players at the forefront of the game's release. As for those who follow, it will be little or no challenge at all. I mean, in FFXI when I first began, a low-level HQ armor was absurdly rare. By the end of my year playing, low-level rank-earned HQ blue-bordered items were so common that you practically had to be not trying if you couldn't afford the old white-border HQ synths. I don't see where FFXIV will be an exception.

He probably does it to balance out the anti FF shills that have dominated these boards recently.
I don't play FF, and I honestly don't give a crap about it to defend it, but I get why others do. And I get why they are felt driven to an extreme to defend what they like in the face of such an organised campaign of viral opinion forming.
The key difference is that in FF11...things stopped around level 50ish or so and aquired items became infinitely more valuable than crafted ones.
FF14 is trying to be different in that all things valuable will come from crafters and only from crafters. Then hopefully, they will become more than just something to upgrade your Archer's Ring to a Sniper's Ring +1.

No one here said anything about not wanting to earn their stuff. No one mentioned WoW. No one mentioned wanting to get to max level ASAP. Hell, I don't even know what the max level is in FFXIV and nor did I care. I like RPG's for character development, variety of play, and story. I'm sure there are many others out there that appreciate RPG's for the same reason. Part of character development is customizing your characters looks every so often to show that he's advancing and making a living. Here my Gladiator was with thousands upon thousands of gil, and no reasonable or logical way to buy equipment.
Agreed, I loved EQ back in the day as well.
Oh, you meant FFXIV?
The thing I always wondered when people talk about 'earning your equipment' is what is the difference?
In some MMOs you have to craft your gear, while in others you have to fight for your gear. Isn't it basically the same thing?
Sure, in some games it may be easier to obtain gear via raids than others, but the same can be said for crafting. It's all relevant to the player I guess.
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
You nailed it exactly, it's all relevant( I think you meant relative?) to the player.
There is not right or wrong in this sort of scenario, some people prefer to kill things to get things, others prefer to make things to get things.

Every time I see your sig I laugh, BANN HIM, haha xD.
It is true, Play for time consuming fun not time wasting.
Aye, meant relative :P

This reminds me of the economy in Runescape. Where new weapons and armor start out extremely high, and then depreciate quickly as people flood the market to meet demand. Only items that come from treasure trail drops (treasure hunting mini-game) remain relatively at value. Everything that can be crafted or dropped from a monster depreciates quickly and becomes commonplace after only a few months, with pretty much the only exception being items that come out with new skills at high levels.
You have little free time so you decide to play a MMORPG? :P
C'mon, admit it, you're feeling that itch and it needs to be scratched.
I quit back in March and for the most part, have been able to resist the siren's call. However the past few weeks have been more difficult as FFXIV has been calling my name. I think I"m getting over it though. Enough time on this site and others are successfully dampening my interest for this game.
Gil is is easy to make by grinding Guildleves as soon as you can run the rank 20 leves which become available at rank 13. That makes buying nice crafted gear easy. The storyline so far is also very interesting especialy once you hit rank 20.

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight, and this becasue obviously anyone who disagrees with you and likes the game is a paid shill right? I mean we're dealing with absolutes here, of course, so since he doesn't agree with you...he's wrong. Or worse, a plant
You know what makes me laugh? Honestly? Every review I read or hear that bashes the game, including Gamespot's and now Gametrailers, sounds like whiny spoiled childishness. They're written or spoken in proper English, sure enough, but more than anything else they're *still* griping about how it doesn't have all the convenient niceties of all the post-WoW MMOs.
"It takes forever to run somewhere" really means "My quests and grinding aren't all in one spot, and I can't teleport or fly everywhere".
"The questing system is a mess" really means "You have to actually search for NPCs instead of having them pointed out to you with gigantic glowing I HAVE A MEANINGLESS QUEST FOR YOU icons over their heads".
Ya know what...I'm gonna stop there. There are millions of people for whom World of Warcraft was the first exposure to MMOs (and millions more who have played it after playing other MMOs as well). Well I'm going to speak my freaking mind here and call down the flames:
That game has single-handedly ruined the MMO genre by creating millions of first-time MMO players who are used to simplified, spoon-fed, hand-holding, quick-fix, no-challenge, no-skill, no-consequence, easy reward gameplay. And you know what? SOME OF US DON'T LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of us DON'T LIKE being able to farm all the best gear easily from paper tiger mobs.
Some of us DON'T LIKE getting to max level in two or three months.
Some of us DON'T LIKE going from camp A to zone B to dungeon C in 60 seconds via some "mystical gateway" or flying mega-chicken.
Some of us DON'T LIKE taking a rock and an apple core and clicking "combine" to get a glowing, flame-licked, 15-foot polearm out of it.
Some of us like things to be hard, tough to figure out, convoluted and messy. That way, we get the satisfaction of figuring it out or doing it for ourselves.
So honestly- and I'll never ever say anything this damned crude again, and I won't respond to this post, and I'll probavly get banned which will make everyone realy happy -but honestly, F**K all you impatient and lazy brats. For a whole host of reasons, this game isn't for you. Piss off, seriously. Take the locust swarm onto the next game, please, and leave those of us who like this one to enjoy it in peace
Jesus...
