Why do people need a quest to motivate them to kill things?

    To be honest, in most games I don't even want to really kill things, I just want to go through a good story and investigate. Now, when are we going to get that Hercules Poirot MMO? :)

    Is the reliance on quests a result of WoW?  Keep in mind Everquest, one of the most successful MMOs of all time had a quest system that was terrible, yet people still managed to kill things and have fun.

    Why not have a Open world with no Npc's, No banks, No storage,No Buildings and NO MAPS,etc etc...All you need to do is run around and Make your own stuff from scratch..Why should everything has to be given to the player? Haha

    Killing things without a reason to do so makes about as much sense as a screen door on a submarine. If you're good just grinding mobs all day using an uninspired combat system, knock yourself out.

    I always think of allowing myself to create a role in the the especially in mmorpg rather than let someone else make it for you. This game is quite broad with economy an revolves around it like the last one ff11. but this game has much more in store thats for sure. but as you notice this game hasn't been out long i expect quest also but not as a motivation some people need this to survive as if they have no intention to explore on their own. that is -100 RP points imo lol. how can anyone RP with waiting for their next plot ? gotta adventure out on your own an you can find lots of your own quest ;). I was wondering around talking with lots of the NPC's in the game i don't even think others have visited. it seems to be a nice war of airships awaiting us all!!! hint hint

    The reason is character progression, the same reason why you would be fine if an NPC told you he needed 10 Pig Snouts from X area in Y zone. You do it not because you actually want to give him his pig snouts, like that would progress the story further, but to progress your character further in strength.

    If an NPC telling you to kill something makes it seem less monotonous than actually going out and killing something without being prompted to, knock yourself out.

    .. But in a good way.

    Depends on the game in question.

    WoW is a popular example. I'm willing to bet that the time-played intervals between actual story-involved quests in both WoW and FFXIV is roughly the same. Except WoW has hundreds of quests you go through to get to those story-involved quests.

    WotLK had a lot more of them admittedly, the Wrathgate being a large one, Icecrown being a nice zone for personal participation in sieging the Citadel, etc. But before Wrath? Barely any quests like that. It took them years to get to there. Classic barely had crap that actually involved the player into the main story, just the average MMO grind quests. Opening the AQ gate is all I can actually think of, which can't be done anymore.

    If chains of grind quests leading up to a "Kill X Leader of that shit you've been grinding on" quest is your idea of quest progression, by all means, have at it. I personally don't need my hand held to give me enough incentive to progress my toons.
