wow hit it's peak in late TBC, that lasted till Ulduar. Then it sky-rocketed to the bottom. It has not gotten better. at all.
Say that a few million times and you might just believe it yourself. WoW reached 12m subscribers. They didn't have 12m in TBC. The fact that you left a game doesnt mean everybody did.
Figures don't really mean to much to me as it doesn't always mean that its the better game. ( those figures could be full of fans of Mr T for all I know)
I get what people are saying though, WoW is polished enough and enjoyable to give it a second go, but I also get the feeling that GW2 is something well worth waiting for!
4) Personality for your character that can change depending on how you act in the game. Npc's will change how they react to you accordingly.
5) crossover attacks. (shoot trough fire, and you will get fire arrows)
6) Buy to play model
7) Awsome dying system...XD
(ok, the last one might not be a that's why i buy it factor but can't deny it's awsome! =3) anyway, here are the reasons why i am going to buy GW2. Goodluck convincing your friend.
TBO, I think WoW's success comes largely due to media attention..even if it is negative attention. You get tons of news about kids died of playing WoW. If you get some news about kids died of playing GW2, heh..GW2 will get hot.
Honestly, your cousin sounds like a WoW fan boy, because WoW doesn't have all of the things that GW2 is working on. It is like saying that your local McDonald's hamburger is the same as a ribeye steak because they both come from a cow. If all you are looking for is meat, then, yes, there won't be anything missing from either. If you would rather have something that is deeper, you probably need to wait for GW2 (assuming those are your only two choices). A few other posts have linked and provided some examples where GW2 is going above and beyond WoW.
That said, there is nothing wrong with WoW. Get a free trial and give it a try. It is well polished. For those of us that played it for many years and have left, it is also insanely easy until you get to the very end raids (initial raids are extremely easy just like all of the content to get you to 80). Since Ghostcrawler is still at the helm, Cata will likely continue the dive into easy mode. Some people don't recognize how easy it has become, and others enjoy the ease of the game for relaxation. It really depends on what you are looking for. No harm in trying a trial to see if you might find it fun.
Nice explanation and totally agree with you. I played WoW only for two months, and I moved to Aion, Allods, Warhammer etc. I always looking for new gaming experience. I dont want to eat hamburger for the rest of my life...
And here we have the McDonalds comparison again. If WoW is the equivalent of a hamburger in the MMO industry, the rest of the MMOs must be the unedible crap of the industry lol cause they sure as hell feel inferior to WoW, definitely not the refined quality of that fine steak you can have instead of a filthy burger.
But here everybody hates WoW so just go and play Hello Kitty. That has depth or one of those so very successful sandbox games like Darkfall :P

That's not what he means anieli. A lot of people like hamburgers, so a lot of people buy them. While an other restaurant might have better quality food, they don't have as many costumers.
Everybody knows the hamburgers are less quality, but they still like it more. Meaning that WOW is very populair, but might not have the best quality anymore because other games improved. But that you prefer the high quality over the hamburger doesn't mean you hate it, or never eat it. ^.^
That's all.

Let me help the OP out real quick if he decides to start WoW.
Grind levels up to 80. If you haven't made 80 by December, you'll need to get Cataclysm and grind to 85. Well, regardless, you'll need to buy Cataclysm and grind to 85 anyhow. Once you've leveled, you'll need to start running dungeons for the gear to run heroic dungeons for the gear to get into the lower end raids for the gear to get into the higher raids etc.
Now, if Cataclysm is out by then, you can pretty much ignore all the gear before that... quest blues will be superior to the Lick Gear gear that is currently available.
Hell, in a nutshell, it's all a gear grind. It's addictive, I did it for years. Then one day I went to log in because I had to (yeah, it gets like that) and realized I didn't want to. To maintain yourself as even a remotely viable raider, it's work. It's a second job. Grind for this, grind for that, raid, hope you don't fail, finally kill the boss, hope for your gear to drop, if it does, hope you win the roll, if not, wait til next week.
Don't get me wrong, it's a great game. At least, until it stops being a game. Then you're either a grinding raider, or a noob. That's all it boils down to.

Don't forget of the other 2 addictive reasons to play MMORPGs and don't stop, whether they are P2P like WoW or are F2P:
1- In P2P, you pay for it each month and you feel that you can't stop playing in middle of the month because you paid for the whole month, than you get to the end of the month and you feel that you already invested too much on it that it might be best to continue playing it.
2- In all mmorpgs, you have so many people people that you know in-game (whether you knew them from rl or only in-game) that you feel that someone is waiting for you today or tomorrow, someone is missing you, someone needs your help, someone wants to PVP with you, your Guild might want you to do something or give you a promotion.... all of this makes you feel that you belong there, whether or not you're there doing boring stuff and discussions with other players when you login.
WoW it's not the only game with all this problems that cut the fun and turn the game into a job, there are even F2P games that can turn into a job too. But since WoW is the mmorpg with more worldwide reputation and is build in orther to catch the interest of most players, it is the game with the biggest number of players that tried it or left it after some time and claim it to be a grind game. A game that is suposedly better than others, but has the same problems than most games, is P2P and has a somewhat problematic comunity, becomes a big flawed game because is the same as the other mmorpgs for a lot of people.

I subscribed to Netflix, yet I don't feel compelled to watch movies everyday.
I think paying the subscription fee is irrelavent to why you can't stop. But, the urge to try to advance your character does let you keep going, either through gear collecting or by leveling. You'll only lose interest to the game once you feel like you don't get rewarded enough for the amount of effort you put in. This reward can be in the form of leveling up, gaining better gears, or the emotional attachment in your social circle (clans and guilds).
Truth: Wow is a game you can play now. GW2 is a game you can't even play and is explained on paper with catchy footage.
Of course I will try GW2.
But even WOW Cata will be a complete other game in 2 months than it was 2 days ago.
And 2 days ago they added 6.5 Giga to it for new class mechanics and a complete new interface. Blizzard style.
Azeroth 2 is introduced over an 8 week span. Bg's compettion, new Guild vs Guild wars (pun intended), Cities attacked.
So what is there even to enlight ?
The existent game one can play and see evolve in a fresh new coat over the next year ... or the paper hype you will not even get in the coming 12 months ?
I've made a decision to play Gw1 till Gw2 release, going to try and get some of these HOM items, whether that's the right move I'm not sure but that's what I'm doing.
I think I've started to get my cousins attention on Gw2 as I explained some of what its bringing to the table and he realised that it sounded pretty good. Hopefully when the time comes he will come join me.

most of the points is pretty easy to get. and take your time and enjoy the game. nake sure to use gw wiki for detailed walktroughs for all missions and things in gw, it will speed up the process a lot.

That's because you have a lot of cool movies in TV everyday if you want without paying for them and you have other things to see in TV besides movies that keep your interest. And you don't have a movie that you wanna see repeatedly everyday.
While for games the same concept doesn't apply.
If a player has a favourite and/or addictive game, they don't wanna play other games unless they are completely worn out of that game.
If there aren't other games that interest you, you usually play the same game everyday. If the only way to play that game is paying monthly, then you pay it each month.
If you are tired of playing that game in the middle of the month, you might focus on searching for other games but you still continue playing the same game, untill you find one that keeps your interest (since you payed for the whole game, let's still play it while you can't find a replacement).
And if you get to the end of the month and feel that you might want to come there once in a while in the next month, than you pay for it again.
And this is not a point to work alone, but is one point that is important to consider when we're talking about the problems of P2P addiction.
Its annoying having to convince family or friends to join as well, why can't they just do as I say!
I didn't have that problem myself. Not that this is indicative of anything, but I recently passed along a couple of gameplay links to my buddies who are still playing WoW. One vid was starter stuff showing the level one battle against the earth elemental and the other was the Shatterer fight. Three out of four of them were ready to jump ship on the spot and are now only waiting for the release day for GW2. The fourth steadfastly refused to even consider leaving WoW, even if everyone else he played with left.
Like I said, I don't think this is indicative of WoW's player base as a whole, but three quarters of my WoW friends will be jumping to GW2 right away, so long as they've had enough time to digest the new Cataclysm content. I don't see that being a problem.

It's fine if you're that WoW biased with your talk about 'Azeroth 2' or 'WoW 2' (funnily enough I recall some other, quite fanatic WoW fans talking about CATA like that a few months back), but at least get your facts straight. GW2 will be released far before 12 months have passed.
On topic: GW2 has a lot of innovative things to offer that I think will set it apart and above WoW, especially if you're looking for something innovative and different from the 'same old same old'. But in all fairness, GW2 is still a month or 6 away.
I don't know if you can convince your friend if he's so stuck in his way towards WoW, some people are like that, they're not open for anything new.
There's no doubt though that GW2 will have a lot of features and gameplay that differs from WoW post-CATA or that WoW even won't have, from the Dynamic Events to the Personal Story to the World vs World PvP to the team skill combos
Take a look here if you want to learn more of what GW2 has to offer.
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
the 2 games are different, and it is hard to convince someone to join a game that is not yet in Beta. There are alot of differences between WoW and GW2 (in fact tahts whatthey are trying to do). If your friend prefer WoW then he should stay in it. But we cant say for sure what GW2 will end up being because no one played any thing like to it.
i don't understand the question. if you're asking should you play WoW until GW2 comes out, then yes you should unless you like being gameless. if you're asking which ones better or which should you play, nobody can really answer that because GW2 isn't out.
Ok, I've been reading a lot about GW2 after only just discovering that it was due for release (and yes I've been in a hole for the last few months!), all is looking good in the world of GW2 and I can see that there are definitely some new ideas that they are bringing to and addressing within the whole MMO experience.
I have no doubt that I will be playing GW2 without any hesitation but until it is released I have my cousin breathing down my neck telling me to get on WoW. Now I have played WoW before, admittedly not for massive stint but definitely enough to understand where it is coming from.
Problem I have is that after reading about GW2 I know that WoW didn't have the same structure when I played it (over a year ago at least) I've told my cousin some of what GW2 has and he sort of rolls over and says "oh WoW has that, plus server vs server action".
So to my question, has WoW made some steps in the right direction and should I give it a go until GW2 or can you lot explain what GW2 has over WoW so that I can break is hold over it so that he can join me on GW2 -when its released of course!
He's in his 20's as well so I need substance not kiddy wow factors if you know what I mean.
Thanks
If you want to convert him to gw2 in a logical manner you need to have enough experience in wow not to be discredited by him.

Also you shouldn't really be trying to goad him into playing gw2 as the game isn't even out yet and you have no idea how it will actually turn out.
I can tell you that anyone that played WoW at the top level is going to find GW2 too "easy" and simplified.

Good description of gear dominated games, Volkon. That's also part of why I quit playing WoW a while ago.

Ah I know how you feel...
When I showed the manifesto video to a friend he said "pff Deathwing..." when he saw Shatterer...
Or when he saw the charr he said "pff Cat Tauren..."
Or when people see the warrior class they say..."copy from WoW"
Ok we all know WoW was the first game with dragons, bestial races and warriors right?
