It sure can be fixed, but it's weird as hell how can any developer worth their salt be blind to this.

According to the head developer for FF14

    A) He hasn't touched another game since FF11 hit the market because thats all he plays (and you wonder why FF feels so outdated..)

    B) He literally didn't try his own product (FF14) until it was in OB. Which explains alot..

SE won't change a thing or admit they screwed this up, they just come off as a company that loves the smell of their own farts. I thought 13 was bad, but they stunned me with how horrible 14 was.  I bet they don't even have the grapefruits to address the poor reviews this game is receiving. If it is being received poorly by FFxivcore.com then the game has no chance. It would be as if MMO-champion rejected WoW because cata was just awful (not saying it is just an example)

^This was hilarious to me for some reason... all he plays is FF lmao and did not play FF14 until it was in OB hahahahaha!

Not the death of that IP, other game company may give it a try.

And yet somehow, this boob was left to manage a game with millions and millions invested into it. Is there no point in development where someone could have just said "yo this shit is awful we need to go back to the drawing board" more horrifying yet, maybe their staff really hasn't caught up to the next generation and they are all stuck in the past. Maybe the entire dev team played no game but FF11 for the last 10 years, either way, FF is looking like a shoe-in for failure of the year gaming wise. And I'd agree about STO except the studio making it raised my eyebrow from the beginning, SE used to be a reputable company once..

Fully agreed. I mean, that's what took Vanguard so long to release. They literally erased the entire world and redid it at one point. It blew their money and took precious time, but they did that because they didn't enjoy what they had made.

Makes me wonder how many asian MMO devs are over at SOE with the "we are right about everything. Shut up player, we tell you what is good" attitude.

Biggest gaming disapointment? To who? The majority of gamers don't like MMOs, and the majoirty of MMO players do not care for FF, nor do they want more linear hand holding generic games.

Meh, I guess it's subjective, but I didn't have too much high hopes for the game as I wasn't a FFXI fan. I also hated XIII a lot (mostly due to stupid voiceactors, and the difficulty spike at the very last map which made me quit the game before actually beating it (parenthesis within parenthesis! I know I'm a baby)) but yeah, I'd say this year there's been worse. MO probably takes the cake.

Both FF14 and STO were terrible, but i wasnt waiting for STO, so FF14 takes my  vote

Star Trek Online bcs of the big IP behind it that never can fit into an mmorpg and everybody knows it and nevertheless they did make the game and it was even more bad than expected.

For FF 14 i have to ask if the game is that bad why have the numbers not shown a big decrease in players already or is everyone a masochist?
Today, on a monday, on my server the numbers are 2800 at peak and ~2500 to ~1700 for the 3 main timezones which is equal to all the days since the game has been released officially.
If 2/3 of all the players hate the game so much they should have left it already...

Free month =/= commitment. Not to mention those are low to begin with. After the free month when people stop trying to get some semblance of worth from their 50 dollars, then the numbers might actually matter.

Star Trek is such a huge IP that almost certainly someone else will have a crack at it , I think some people thought that Sony had killed of the Star Wars IP but hopefully next year will prove different .

as for FF XIV who knows ?

With how well SWTOR is starting to shape up, its very fair to say that with the right developer and the right producer, the star trek name could very be kickstarted and jumped up again after STO officially goes under. I'm no legal expert but there would have to be some kind of catch to stop them from making another Star trek online MMO as long as the current STO existed in current form. Once STO finally kicks the bucket, hope for a new resurrection of Star trek online can begin.. as for FF, it's future does not look good atm with the wave of negative media and fan reviews.

You have to set things in perspectives.  This isn't a mom and pop shop MMO, this is from Square and it's Final Fantasy.   It was hyped to no end and expectations were huge.  That just serves to make the dissapointment so much greater.   They didn't just not hit the mark, they missed the mark as if they were shooting in the other direction.

FFXIV RIP.  Watch for it to take first place though in all of the various "greatest letdowns of the year" surveys.

It's hyperbole like this that prevents any sort of meaningful discussion on these forums.

FF14 isn't a failure, it isn't not a failure either.  There is no real way to tell which direction the wind will blow until the first month runs out, I think we all learned that one from Age of Conan.

As for greatest let down of the year?  Neh, I rather quite like it...and there have been larger bombs.

I'm not saying either of you are wrong, but deflecting the comment with a "Wait and see" argument isn't helping anything =P. First it was "It's Beta. Give it time". Now it's "It was just released. Give it time."

Hope. That's one thing you and so many others seem to have in droves, I'll give you that.

~Miles "Tails" Prower out! Catch me if you can!

Actually all I was saying was saying is it's impossible to know whether the game will be a success or failure until after the free month is up.

Saying it's a failure or a success at this point is premature, like in Age of Conan...sold almost a million units, but retained only about 100,000 beyond the first month.

Actually AoC sold 800k units at launch  (end may 2008) and by August 15th 2008 had 415k (about 3 months later on the Q.Report). It also retained more customers for a longer period than WAR did prior to both those respective companies not publishing figures anymore (on Q1 report following year)

The biggest difference is that both WAR and AoC carried a higher meta critic score at this point compared to FFXIV from professional known review sites.

People can judge from themselves but I think it is clear across the majority of gaming websites that comment on FFXIV is that it seems to be a let down. The # 1 comment I see is "boredom".

I am still debating if I want to play STO, WOW (now will soul-crush patch), or FFXIV...

I have concluded FFXIV is not playable... I don't think it can be fixed... but that's my opinion...

Oh yes fan-bois, I hacked into most of the Game review sites and posted all the horrible reviews... I admit it...

I alone gave FFXIV bad reviews, it was me the whole time,  ALL THE REVIEWS ON THE INTERWEBS WAS MEEEEE!

    MAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

No it was me, Game Spy  2 out of 5,  IGN 5.5 of 10, Game Spot 3 of 10, Erozeapedia (FFXIV OWN WIKI) with a 69% disapproval rating..... all those votes were me....

and countless other reviews... ONLY ME...

I wrote them all, and not one of them was by a professional gamer, or gamer magazine critic...

I was kind of expecting this game to be unfinished and semi broken yeah...It is a huge disappointment but I can't say it came to me as a shock...now Metroid other M sucking as much as it did and completely ruining Samus as a character...that was the biggest disappointment of 2010 for me.

  • FleshMaskFleshMask Member UncommonPosts: 249

    FFXIV Theme Song:

"I'll be broke til December, I'll be broke until December... please just remember, I'll be broke until December..."

Broke till december hmmm im pretty sure its another excuse for keep their players but who know another free months lol

  • AthcearAthcear Member Posts: 420

For me, it was Allods Online.  The setting and tone of the game gave me high hopes... and then the debacles over the cash shop and pricing... compeltely ruined it.  Considering how dreadful FF12 and 13 were, 14 sucking didn't really surprise me.

    Important facts:
    1. Free to Play games are poorly made.
    2. Casuals are not all idiots, but idiots call themselves casuals.
    3. Great solo and group content are not mutually exclusive, but they suffer when one is shoved into the mold of the other. The same is true of PvP and PvE.
    4. Community is more important than you think.

Not at all... this is a mmoprg so game grows. with these graphics an it being final fantasy, i see good stuff down the line. its not like the game came out an its final. For a shaky start of course thats a giving, being a progressive world that actually has a foundation of long term game play. I would be disappointed if I wasn't getting into any fun. But I manage to have fun daily with this.

  • BenjolaBenjola Member UncommonPosts: 843

I voted FFXIV because I really didn't see it coming.

With APB and especially STO the writing was on the wall months before launch, FFXIV on the other hand totally surprised me, I wasn't expecting so much fail.

I'm never wrong about these things lol how could I miss this one?

Oh well, I wont be missing TOR failure though I called it months ago already, SW:TOR will top all 2010 failures combined that's much is certain.

GW2 will do well, it's the only MMO in the making that makes sense somewhat.

Rift and few others... can't tell I haven't done any research yet on those.

I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.

The guys at Obsidian are the ones who created Fallout, Bethesda were the ones who worked on a sequel.  Obsidian is just getting a chance to work on their original IP again.
