I was one of the people who bought the Collectors Edition for 80 bucks. I enjoyed the open beta, but I did see the "flaws" ahead of time.
However, with that being said.. every single MMO I've betaed or played in the past year or more have all had pretty horrendous launches. FFXI was a different beast, because it wasn't even released in the states first.. it had a full year of play in Japan before we ever got to see it. Plenty of time to iron out any issues that could arise, and add all the content we could stand.
SE has an entire library of games full of content, and fun.. FFXI has so much stuff to do, you''ll never get it all done. I know that they will be patching and adding alot of stuff as it goes along. The core of the game itself isn't "bad" just alot of the ways things were done initially. Alot of these things probably looked good on paper, but its an entirely different story once you throw 2000 random people into the mix and tell them to "have at it". I'm gonna give em the benefit of the doubt, because I've really never been let down by SE even with their latest RPG efforts.. I mean, once you've made 12 games.. there's bound to be a dud in there somewhere. I kind of want to stick around and grow with the game. I mean, I don't want to play WoW and I don't want to play any of the other old games and the only other game I am interested in is GW2 and thats because there's no sub fee. Who else is going to stick around despite the bad reviews and flaws?

You know my stance. I've been avoiding all reviews, because the majority feel like QQ pity parties, but aside from that, I'll hav e to say that yes there are some problems with FFXIV, it could definitely use some more content. That being said, I don't by any means think that this is a "horrendous" launch. The servers have gone down once since launch due to a bug with vendors/bizzares and they fixed that very quickly. They seem to be putting out a patch / bug fix once a week without fail and sometimes more than that.
I just don't see this is a "toughing it out" situation, but thats just me. I've been having a lot of fun playing and I absolutely hated (and you know this) FFXI. Absolutely loathed it, but I think this is an entirely different can of worms.
horrible launches, yes. And the games eventually became more polished versions of what they were at launch. So, if you think a more polished version of what you're playing now will be enough to keep you happy, best of luck!
May everyone find a game they can love...
Not sure. I haven't logged in for some time now, and do not feel like there is a real reason for me to log in. I guess I may try to log in and enjoy it more tomorrow. Or maybe tonight if I get bored enough , who knows. I will probably not be in this one for the long haul though.

I intend to play it for a few months at minimum. If I am still enjoying it and have the time I'll continue.

Well, I'm in my first 30 days right now. Got about 3 weeks before I have to pay the first sub. SE has until then to show me some real effort on their part in regards to addressing issues like the vendor system, menu lag, and content, starting with the vendor system since they stated in last weeks patch notes that it's supposed to be in a patch this week. If they do, then I'll sub and give them a chance. Any month after I sub that I see no real effort with real patches addressing underlying issues is my last month with them.

I finally got my (late) pre-order today, installed the game and started playing. Rerolled 3 times already (1st time I made a botanist, hard to kill something - 2nd time was good, but I forgot my goggles - 3rd time same as 2nd but now WITH goggles).
I know the game still has some issues, but I'm sure SE will fix them fast. I even think that SE uses the PC launch as a beta for the PS3 launch. If all "big issues" are ironed out, then the PS3 launch will be flawless, and it'll save patching for the PS3 version as well (and HDD space on it)
And OP says to wait for GW2. Its' not my cup of tea, but I was waiting for TERA. Now that I finally got my hands on FFXIV, I might as well skip TERA...
They need to add npc's at every camp that sell arrows. It gets to become very frustrating running back and forth for arrows ALL the time. Make the bazaar system alot more accessible. Do something with crafting. Right now it is a snooze grind.
Add some more content. I do think I may log in here after I get back from the store , knock out a few leves or whatever.

No, i will not support this mess of a game while SE tries to fix it. The 80$ i spent buying it is all the suppor ttheyll get from me until I start seeing major fixes and overhauls in the patch notes. I may come back in a few months or a year but there are way to many other games coming out soon just to "tough it out" on this disappointin one.
I am.
I spent the past few weeks sifting through the negative feedback and reviews, and after a while I realized something. The people who don't like the game, prefer games I'm tired of. The features they complain are missing, are things I find dilute the game anyways.
Downloaded an ISO overnight, and started installing this morning. Installation was easy, patching was easy (and P2P, brilliant). Account setup was a bit of a hassle, but then that seems to be the norm for large publishers (like NCSoft/SOE/etc), even modifying my Guild Wars account via my PlayNC master account isn't that painless.
Then I get in game, and realize that maybe I shouldn't have set my buffer size to 'Double', as the first step after character creation crawls along at 15fps. A quick logout and adjustment and I'm back in at 40-50fps, much better.
I must admit, it's a little daunting. I managed my way through the first couple of combat scenarios without problem, but I couldn't even find a way to bring up the menu, I kept hammering the Escape key. Then I had a brainstorm, and opened the DVD case to actually 'read' the manual, which I had earlier just thrown back in after getting the registration key. Quickly rebound my N52TE with a few new keys, and got back in game.
The first few hours have I've been running around with no clue, which TBH, is pretty damn refreshing. Out of the 43 MMO's I've played since FFXI, 80% of them have had the same interface, the same controls. You can pretend it's "intuitive", but the only intuitive interface is the nipple, everything after that is learned. While I feel incredibly confused at the moment, I'm really looking forward to learning the game, instead of just knowing out the gate how things work and getting bored after a few weeks.
I may stick it out, or I may just not renew my subscription until a few things get patched.
Probably gonna just wait a few months and level a few alts in WoW for now. I am really rooting for FFXIV because I want it to end up being a good game, as I played FFXI for 5 years. Hopefully Square gets their head out of Enix's ass and gets some good content into the game.
I swear, worst merger in the world, right behind that AOL - Time Warner one.
I don't think you need to waste your time making excuses for anyone especially yourself, I don't think it's so much a matter of sticking it out as you are still able to enjoy the game despite it's flaws and there is nothing wrong with that, oh yeah I know the haters will tell you you're crazy for playing it but so what it's your money and your time.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
and maybe they WANT to post.
going through it all the way. Behest is friggin awesome. and found some very nice big mobs in some caves.
if someone starts a screenshot-thread i post some. Awesome drops too.
I'll be continuing my subscription, though I do admit that it's my #2 game behind Aion.
I have decided today to stick around. I will not be cancelling. I love damn near everything about the game.
Well I already went through the canceling process.
cancelled, wont be coming back, probably ever. Now im seeing the reviews coming out, this game is getting TRASHED by reviewers....good luck SE, at elast hey have thier blind asian players to keep the game going, if it says square they will play it.
I am very much on the fence about this game. For all its faults like the bazarr and the UI, I truely think those things can be fixed releatively fast. However, for me, here is where the problem lies.
I see the core of this game being very "bad". The entirety of the game, content-wise, has been developed around the guildleve system. You can see this just by looking at each of the maps. Every map clearly has camps scattered around to be starting points for leves.
It just amazes me that they actually thought this was a great system. Who in their right mind could possibly think this type of system would be fun for more than the first 10 to 20 levels. Did they really think going back to one of the main cities, grabbing 1, maybe 3 guildleves for a camp way out in the middle of BFE, traveling to that camp, killing a few spawned mobs, then repeating the same thing over ad nauseum for 50 levels 18 tiimes over was going to be fun gameplay?
I want to like this game, I really do, but if slapping on more guildleves ends up being their solution to adding more content, then I can't believe anyone would want to play this game very long. Where are the deep dungeions? Where are the nameds? Where is the exploration?
I seriously wish I could go back in time and be a fly on the wall to listen in on the meetings where they descussed and came to the conclusion this was going to be a great system.
The moment I read "It's like" or "WoW" is the moment I stop reading your post.
Same here. The only reason I'm playing EQ2 right now alongside FFXIV is that I was so bored not play any MMO, and I thought EQ2 would be good enough to pass time (and it is). Too bad, the sub is still 5 months running, so I'll play the 2 alongside till then.
Like you, I've played over 3 dozen MMOs in the last few years and haven't found anything that could really grab me, aside from FFXI. But to start on that I was somewhat "too late". Good thing FFXIV is here now ;-)
That sounds familiar... Though I didn't set my textures to double, it did take me about 1 hour starting, testing, exiting and configuring to get my FPS to a decent 25+ level.
I never understood why SE didn't implement video config in their games
I never bothered to look at the keyboard layout. I grabbed my PS2 gamepad (with USB of course :P) immediately and configured that one to play. It works extremely smooth TBH.
I canceled, but did not uninstall. I'll be keeping my eye on the game and hopefully return in the future.
I liked the crafting...yet it was the crafting/economy that ultimately convinced me to cancel. Good luck to those who stick it out. I'm sure it will ultimately be a fine game and I'll be able to join you then.
they get no support from me, i chargedback 4 collector's editon boxes. Iam giving them the finger.
I am sticking it out.
playing: Dragon Age
Waiting: for FF14, Mass Effect
Want to try: Fallen Earth
I'm not and already cancelled, but for those who stick around I really and truly hope SE can turn this bad start around and give you guys the content and game you deserve. Best of luck
Um, yeah.
I'm sorry, but I don't see the Enix side being responsible for this. Considering while FInal Fantasy XIII was a turd game with an interactive movie attached, Dragn Quest IX was brilliantly done.
But then again, the Dragon Quest team is the same team they've had from the beginning, while Final Fantasy's creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, left Square Enix to form his own company because he didn't like where SE was going with his franchise. So while SE was fooling around with FFXIII, Hironobu Sakaguchi made the best selling JRPG Lost Odyssey, which was more like a FInal Fantasy title than FFXIII.

I'm with you on this one guys, glad to know I'm not alone noticing that almost every MMO are likely to be just the same. And I too was too late in playing FFXI.

So true, Lost Oddyssey is the UNofficial FFXIII in my opinion was well.
