Sounds like its seriously crippling your personal life if, as you said, you sit in front of it all day and its the first thing you think about every day. Also, the fact that you're asking us if you should quit indicates that you already know you should, but are just looking for some suggestions as to how to actually do it. I think most MMO players can relate to your feelings about this, certinaly to *some* degree.
As for me, I pretty much used to be in that exact same position that you are describing. Ive been addicted to other things in my life - I know what addiction feels like - and MMOs can be extremely addictive. I play WoW very casually now, a couple hours a day for a few days a week. I used to be on *constantly* tho basically a year ago or so ago.
Let me propose some solutions and suggestions which helped me cut back on playing WoW:
First, are you working? If not, find a job right away, even if its not the "ideal" job for you. This will help you in couple ways: First, you will obviously have more money - always a good thing. Second, you will spend your energy at your job and you might not actually feel like playing when you get home because ur too tired already and dont really feel like running around Stormwind for hours.
Second, invest more time in a hobby of yours - you dont need to be obsessive about it., you can just do it casually if you like. This will increase your "real life skill" in that hobby (e.g your knowledge and experience about it). This skill is something you get to keep forever and actually matters in the real world For example, I like to practice my music sometimes. If you dont have a hobby, pick one that interests you that goes beyond anything related to video games. It should be something where you can acquire a real life skill in, for example: music, work out, cooking, building stuff, create websites, learn how to program, etc.
Third, get some exercise and work out , do it sometimes but be dedicated. This will be good for a few reasons. It will tire you out, and video games might be less appealing to you if you are exhausted. More importantly, this will make you feel better about yourself - always a good thing and this has many positive concequences in your real life.
Fourth, find a girlfriend or boyfriend or make some new friends. The above point will help in this regard.
Fifth, try to schedule how you spend ur time during the day as best as you can, doesnt need to be exact, you can even do it in your head. Dont dedicate too much time to video games though, you will be busy doing other things.
Finally, set some real life *goals* for yourself. This will relate to all the points I made above. The goals can be small or big, just *be dedicated* to them. Have a *realistic* vision for the long term and make it happen.
Anyway, those are things that helped me quit my addition to WoW, hopefully they will be able to help you too. Good luck.
OP - This is probably the best advice you are going to get. The only way we could offer more is if you can repost and go into more detail on each of the aspects Magic Bubble listed. Age, employment, family situation, school, playing 7 days a week? Bottom line is without more detail you are going to have to make the decision on your own. Apparently there is a gene for addictive behavior and some are able to control it better than others (alcoholics vs occasional drinkers). If you can't write more than three words about any of the topics listed then you need to quit now. If you are exageratting but just feeling guilty then hell, keep playing!
Sorry for not getting back to you guys straight away as I was asleep, but I appreciate all the suggestions posted here & I'll be considering them over the next few days.
Thank you very much guys, you've all been a great help.

wow (maybe not the right word), you should actually consider some professional help. Really, it sounds like you have a bad addiction.
Take a holiday somewhere where you wont be able to play, weeks in Cuba or similar place would make wonders for your sanity. Or drop of your computer at you parents or friends place and leave it there for a month with strict instructions to not give it back to you before.
And don't just start something else, you need a serious break. Read some books, try some pen and paper RPGs or boardgames, anything.

Your probably right. I really think the pay to play model compels people to keep playing to maximize their investment in the game. If you take a break without canceling your sub, you in effect feel like your getting screwed. It doesn't pay to just take a few days off and breath the free air. That is why i am an ardent supporter of the buy to play model. You have a game that you can play at any time, but don't feel penalized if you take a break from it. Though to be honest people should take more control of their lives and not let a game take over.
Personally, I think the game is fun. I have been playing off and on since release. When I get bored, I quit for awhile. When I come back, everything is still there. It just takes time getting used to playing again.
The only grief I have now is that I play a level 80 Orc Hunter and he seems to do allot less damage now. Oh well, I just have to learn how to play him all over again.
WoW is a great game, even for a casual player like me. I may not have the best gear, but I have fun.
It seems people want to know what I'm doing for a living & are curious as to "who pays the bills". Not that it's got ANYTHING to do with anybody, but here's your answer.
I'm Insulin Dependent Diabetic & have been since I was 9 years old. I've also recently been diagnosed with Idiopathic Hypersomnia (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000803.htm) which obviously affects my being able to work.
The diabetes goes hand in hand with my not being able to wake up in the morning and sleeping for 16+ hours. I sleep through the times when I have to inject myself, causing me to either go into a hypoglycemic coma, which I've had to have to paramedics round for countless times, or to wake up with my blood sugars so high that I can't see properly & causing long term damage to my liver.
Despite all my problems right now, I DO absolutely work my ass off whilst awake from home. I set up my own business a while back, working from home as a dietician, selling diets to people over the net & analyzing their needs/current situation etc.
I also get disability allowance because of my Diabetes & Hypersomnia, which helps to buy the correct foods & my Insulin which I need on a daily basis. Go check how much Insulin is to purchase & you'll realise that it's not easy having to purchase it near enough every few days, even WITH the small amount of funding I get from the government to pay for it.
Whoever said I contribute nothing to society is out of order, as they've no idea what I do or don't do when it comes to contributing to society.
I shouldn't have had to explain myself like this, but it seems some people on here are extremely quick to judge.
Also, before anybody says "it seems you have far more problems than World of Warcraft to worry about" you're right, I do, but WoW is a little part of my life which is "normal" that I'm trying to control, as opposed to just dealing with my illness day in day out, which frustrates me more than you could imagine. WoW is often an escape from the reality of my life on a daily basis, which is another reason it will be hard to quit.
Anyway in regards to WoW, I've just uninstalled the game & cancelled my subscription. It runs out in 5 days anyway, and I've just ordered Fallout: New Vegas from Amazon, so hopefully once that arrives my WoW time will have expired and I can try to forget about ever playing it again.
One of the main reasons I've put off quitting WoW, is purely for the fact that if I were to quit, I might start playing again 4-5 months down the line and I'd be WAY WAY behind everybody else in terms of gear, progression, levels etc.
I keep thinking that I'll quit but then I'll just start playing again in a few months, but then I'll be behind everybody else, so I should have just not quit in the first place, if you understand what I mean.
Basically if I quit, I'd prefer it was for good so that I wouldn't have to worry about being behind everybody else, but I know I'd keep thinking of playing again if I were to quit.
Why not try the $30 sony station pass. Some would say it is trading on for another, it is. In your situation however. You need the escape. I have been on WoW and recently walked away from it. I am enjoying Vangaurd, Lord of the rings online. World of Tanks{ yeah I know it is a beta, ANYONE can get in on it.} Planetside.
Point is you seem to want to address WoW directly. So do so. If you are unsure of what keeps you there then try the others. See what you like and do not like. At the very least, you will have to discover new areas and possibly new genres that you did not know that you liked.
Hope that I have been constructive.
BTW, when you do the $30 Station pass for Sony they allow you access to all their games. I did not have to buy Vanguard. Hehe, just be ready for the lower server pop.

Dude.. no need for the unneccesary and long sad story. I'm sorry to hear about your conditions though
WoW's getting too old, it lacks the depth and complexity that newer games have to offer. Grinding is the base system of leveling in WoW (just because it's masked by quest text doesn't mean your not grinding). There's hardly any sort of variety anymore. It's all about getting to level 80 and even when you get there, more grinding for gear. I'm personally tired of WoW, it's hard for me to get addicted to such a dull game. I think I went on a bit of a rant there, sorry couldn't help myself.
Either way, you should take a look at Guild Wars 2 and gauk at it's amazing innovation in the MMO genre. This game literally makes WoW look like Hello Kitty's Island Adventure but then again that's not very hard to do. Good luck with New Vegas though, although I personally don't think any non-mmo will fill that empty spot in your heart lol :P
Most people go through life pretending to be a boss. I go through life pretending I'm not.
I've been playing World of Warcraft for 3 years now & have enjoyed every minute of it. I'm considering quitting though, purely due to the fact that I'm admittedly addicted to it. I wake up in the morning & log on to check my mail, even before having a shower or getting anything to eat. I then sit at the computer for the majority of the day playing WoW, even if I'm not doing anything on it. I often find myself just running around the major cities for 10-15 minutes doing nothing, and then I realise "what exactly am I doing? I'm just running around". That's one of the reasons I think it might be best for me to quit.
I've quit in the past, and I've even deleted my characters. The only problem is a few days later I'll contact a GM and ask them to restore my character, which they have done for me in the past. I even sold my whole account to a website which buys accounts from you, but 2 months down the line I contacted them and repurchased my account back from them.
I have an Xbox 360 & a 32" HD TV which I saved up for and splashed out on around 6 months ago, but I've hardly used it whatsoever, due to the fact that the only game I seem to play these days (and for the past 3 years) is World of Warcraft. There's so many games out there for the Xbox 360 that I'd absolutely LOVE to play, but I know for a fact that whilst I'm playing WoW, I won't play any of the Xbox games. Even if I purchased a new Xbox 360 game, it'd most likely gather dust in the DvD rack, whilst I keep telling myself "Yeah I'll play it soon" but I won't due to playing WoW constantly.
I figured that if I was to buy an XBox 360 and a new TV to go with it, that it'd help me to stray away from WoW a little bit, but it hasn't helped at all. I literally have only played the Xbox I bought 6 months ago, around 3 times, and it's a shame as I would like to buy some of the new Xbox games that are out (such as Fallout New Vegas etc) but I know that while I'm still playing WoW, I won't find any time to play on the console.
I've been considering quitting WoW & perhaps buying Guild Wars considering it's a free MMO, and then even if I don't play it for a while, it won't matter because there's no subscription fees, so that will give me some time to play my Xbox. But considering the fact that Cataclysm is coming out soon, it's even more of a difficult choice for me now to quit WoW due to all the hype & excitement of the new expansion. I know for a fact that once Cataclysm comes out, I can kiss goodbye to any time I'd hoped to spend on the Xbox as I won't be playing any other games except for World of Warcraft.
I keep thinking aswell that if I were to quit WoW, I'd keep looking back and thinking "I wish I hadn't quit" and even more so, now that Cataclysm is coming out. For example, I'll be seeing my brother play Cataclysm (he also plays WoW) and seeing all these trailers on TV for it etc, and think to myself "why did I quit? I should have just kept playing" and then I'll regret having quit.
What do you guys think I should do, in all honesty? Please speak the truth, as long as it's not malicious/nasty I don't mind. I'd rather hear the truth tbh. If you guys feel I should quit, then please let me know.
As said I'd love to not be as addicted to WoW as I am at the moment & have been for the past 3 years, and I'd love to be able to play Xbox 360 games & even other PC games but at the moment, I'm so into WoW that I can't really pull myself away for enough time to play anything else.
Thanks guys, I'll await your responses.
I've never understood how anyone could be addicted to World of Warcraft. (I'm sure you kids and people have your excusable reasons). If a game takes this much time of your "living" life, then you do "need" to do something about it. I hear so many of these stories like yours.. the people that just realise they blew "years" on a game and will never have any chance of replacing those years lost.. They seem to try to find any reason to stay when, without a doubt, that game just bores them to death.
This is off topic but I'm sure you'll understand it's meaning. They say you truly love only once in your life. A love that sets right to the core of your very soul. If any game does that, I honestly have no idea how you plan on having an actual relationship here in the real world. I'm not saying this just to you either, I'm saying this to all of the so-called kids/people playing World of Warcraft. Maybe it's time for all of you to see the things you apparently have no idea that you're missing out on. Of course you can always stay in a world that will never exist and with a company that cares only for your money and not what happens to you as a person. I was like this with Lineage 2.. I've learned my own hard lesson. It's time for you decide on wether to live or be another drone that thinks life is surrounded by a game. I hope you choose well and good luck to you.
Ok, just one kernal of thought here, if all the people dedicated and devoted to saving artificial worlds from destruction were to pitch together to save this 'real' world from ourselves.

Ask yourself this!
Would it be a better place?
Azeroth or Earth, which one is worth saving?
That's a very good question ! From a game point of view I would definetly go for Azeroth because there is no decent alternative.
The same would apply to earth from a life point of view of course, because there is (not yet) an alternative planet.
What all the hating troll guys don't realise: you take out Wow and it's game over for decent polished fantasy mmorpg's.
You can always dream of better worlds of course, but until it does exist: Try saving the planet from the lunatics.

Wow... extremist fanboism to this high extent boggles even my mind.
... therefore it must be a joke, fully a tongue-in-cheek post, heh, nice one, convincingly disguised as a serious post. Well done
The ease with which predictions are made on these forums: Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."
I was in the same spot as you over a year ago cept I had played WoW from launch. WoW is one of those games that is so great it can literally consume your life, however the longer you play the game you'll start to get into that just playing because of habit. I played WoW for 4 years, in those 4 years I quit about 3-4 times which I kept coming back for the expansions.
Anyways if you do decide to quit I have some words of advice for you.
1) don't get into another mmo, they'll all be shit in comparison. I'm sorry but generally there is a reason WoW is top dog, if you've played for 3 years you know exactly what i'm talking about. Don't bother wasting your money on another one.
- maybe this is just my personal opinion, i've tried pretty much every mmo to be released after WoW and a bunch that were released before it. (Could be just i'm burnt out on the whole mmo genre who knows)
2) play console games/ rts etc... i've been playing warcraft 3 and starcraft 2 off and on to get my gaming fix. Lots of random console games also.

The history of years passed explains it all really. In both cases.
If you are addicted, and it sounds like you could be, you should do some research on the internet on how to break the additiction. Of course, this will only work if you admit to yourself you have an addiction and you WANT to break it.
Of course, sometimes we move on from one addiction to the next.

I'm sorry dude, but you have less then 8 hours a day of which you need to eat, drink , work and play.
Either you don't play as much as you tell us or you don't work as much as you care to make us believe.
The former makes this thread a hoax and let's me say: nice try troll.
The latter makes the disability allowance to be the bulk of your income. Which comes back to the tax payer paying for your gaming. So show some respect and stop waisting our money (and yes I can say that since I do work for my income).
I then sit at the computer for the majority of the day playing WoW, even if I'm not doing anything on it. I often find myself just running around the major cities for 10-15 minutes doing nothing, and then I realise "what exactly am I doing? I'm just running around".
Bro, we all do that.
It's called being bored lol
Playing: *sigh* back to WoW -------- Waiting for: SW:TOR, APB, WoD --------- Played and loved: Eve and WoW -------- Played and hated: WoW:WotLK, Warhammer, every single F2P

Since humanity was born I would say.
In any case, I would recommend the OP to stick to WoW, as new stuff is coming along soon.

You can always dream of better worlds of course, but until it does exist: Try saving the planet from the lunatics.
))
Wow... extremist fanboism to this high extent boggles even my mind.
... therefore it must be a joke, fully a tongue-in-cheek post, heh, nice one, convincingly disguised as a serious post. Well done

3) watch lots of porn to consume some time
"If you take out WoW it's game over for decent polished fantasy mmorpg's".
I don't get it. please explain further if you will
Most people go through life pretending to be a boss. I go through life pretending I'm not.
So which is it going to be?
Bro, we all do that.
It's called being bored lol
