The population has plummeted on most severs, and its still the extended trial period. Come Nov 22nd, this game is gonna be in real trouble. You don't need to be a prophet to realize that.
I still remember when APB "supposedly" had tens of thousands of players merely weeks before it was shut down. Now true the main reason it shut down was mostly because they wasted too much development time and money on pointless features like the music editor & the last.fm radio feature, so buy the time they had to release they were severel lacking in content. Now the main diffrences between APB and FF XIV are: that Final Fantasy isn't a new IP so Square Enix wouldn't just abandon ship & Square Enix haven't wasted 100's of millions in the development of the game (I think it's because they did some of it on the cheap with Chinese developers).
Back to the point... FF XIV is falling into the same APB pattern of a rapidly declining userbase, with numbers close to APB's prior to it's demise and a sheer lack of content. The thing I will clarify is that a good majority of players will complete the content FF XIV will have to offer, before the 60 day free trial is over and will thus cancel their subscriptions. Sure fans can just shrug this of and enjoy their patches, whenever they're available, but the 20,000 or so subscibers won't help make this game a profit. Since you've also got to take into account: the developmental cost of retaining the PC dev teams, the development of the console version and the cost of maintaining this partially filled servers (which they must keep for the future console version).
So FF XIV is in some serious trouble and it will only get worse when games like Rift, Tera and let's not forget Blade & Soul arrive; which will be in direct competition with FF XIV and each other.
FFXIV is not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but there is a solid foundation of a game for SE to work with. Based off their reputation of what they did with FFXI, I know that FFXIV will be a polished gem in 6 month to a year, and thats when FFXIV will take off. The people who stuck it out and leveled multiple classes, with no rush to do anything will be the ones rewarded in the end with a strong character.
And in 6 months to a year, more superior and more popular MMOs (Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: TOR) would have arrived. Between those 2 games alone, there wouldn't really be that many people in the Western world, reading to pick up FF XIV when it finally becomes more than just a 2nd job.
Also when you're gloating about; down the line, when FF XIV finally becomes a good game and you'll have a top-level character I started wondering... "What is the End Game of FF XIV?" I mean once you finished the story quest and have a max-leveled character, what is there to do that's worth doing? The game has no PvP, no real dungeon raids, nothing to keep players subscribed for months. And I just don't see a miracle patch happening, which would magically add a tonne of end game content to the game.
This goes back to that chart I showed earlier, which portrayed the continual decline in the server population. Because even people who enjoy the game may desert it when they realize, there's not much else to do.
The thing your forgetting is FFXIV is not, nor will ever be a mainstream MMO. SW:TOR will have virtually no impact on FFXIV. The people looking forward to that game most likely have already left ffxiv, or just plain flat playing ffxiv to kill the time, and thats fine. But to think ToR will have a major impact on FFXIV is mistaken.
GWII is the one that poses the greatest threat to FFXIV. But guess what, when GWII launches its going to go through the same crap EVERY mmo goes through. Youll have people pick it up, play for awhile and go back to wherever they came from, especially since its "advertised" as no sub.
Your chat is the typical chart for every mmo at launch. SWtor, GWII will suffer the same fate. Youll see the same curve. The interesting part comes 6months to a year down the road. MMO launches are always predictable.
FFXIV will never reach 1 mil subs, in its prime it will hit 500-600k and thats it. Thats not a bad thing either.
Whats there to do in end-game, the answer right now is nothing. Like I have said before the game as stands is just a base structure. If you have played FFXI's end-game you know what SE is capable of, thats why I say 6 months to a year will be when there starts to be a lot of options on what to do. As the game stands right now it we have half a game. The first expansion will be when the game gets really interesting. Again this isnt your typical mmo, grind quests to cap in less than a month, just to raid several end game dungeons for another month just to move on to the next mmo 3 months after launch.
Like I said the people who stick around and level multiple classes will build a strong character, and be rewarded for it later. I also understand the every gamer doesnt think they should have to do this, and guess what they dont. But they can also wait for the first expansion when the full game gets here, but theres no grounds to cry and moan when someone has invested 6month+ in a game is a lot more powerfull than someone with 2 months.
The assumptions and comparisons in your answer are insane.
"But to think ToR will have a major impact on FFXIV is mistaken."
==> this game will have a major impact on every mmo out there, no exceptions.
"But guess what, when GWII launches its going to go through the same crap EVERY mmo goes through. "
==> Pure speculation. And we are talking FFXIV here so lets compare it to that. FFXIV was an absuluteley unfinished game at release (still is), GW2 will be released when it's finished. This is a complete opposite release phylosophy.
While GW2 may go through crap at release as all MMO's do, it will in no way be the same crap as FFXIV is going through now.
"in its prime it will hit 500-600k and thats it."
==> speculation again.
Like the poster above you said. FFXIV is in a pickle. Two (not to say more because Rift and Tera are coming to) major releases coming up and they will give FFXIV a run for its money. This situation is different from the FFXI days where there was allmost no competition.
I like how my points are "speculation" while you seem to think your points are the gospel. I look at it from the glass half full perspective while you choose the doom and gloom aproach.
Whats not speculation is GWII will show the same trend after a couple months. Just like Rift, just like Tera, and just like SWTOR will. None of those games will hold the initial box sales as subs.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore) Now Playing: N/A Worst MMO: FFXIV Favorite MMO: FFXI
I have loved the FF Franchise and I've been dissapointed by this game. It's just so.. so..
..dull.
Sure it's pretty, but the gameplay is boring. I just don't see how they can fix that but I won't hate on it beyond that. If you're njoying it I guess good for you and I hope the game survives so you can keep enjoying it.

I don't think this is necessarily how it will pan out, I've been playing since pre-release, am pretty average (around 4 hrs a night). My highest job is alchemist at 21, followed by fisherman 17, then pugilist and thaumaturge both at 14. I've only just finished the fourth story mission (no idea how many there are but it's just starting to make sense and get good, story-wise).
I'd peg it closer to 90-120 days to get to cap for someone that's not a robot and goes outside every now and again, and no idea how long all the missions will take, each story quest so far has taken me about an hour and a half to complete (not really rushing them tho).
I hope that Soon Guild Wars 2 is out or any other hyped game.It slowly gets serious boring to always hearing the doom from the same people over and over again.
Edit:
Aside of that we can propably save a lot of space if we make a Topic about: "Why we dislike the game and/or SE would save a lot of space around this forum.
You see that FF14 sold around the same number of copies like Everquest 2, which is not bad. Beside the fact that eq2 was five times cheaper to develop.
You see also that the successfull mmorpgs did not start to instantly drop in numbers. Actually only warhammer and aoc dropped in their first year - and they startet three times higher than ff14.
I don't know why some people here still think ff14 is fine - it sold way less than it needed, and it is loosing far more players faster than any other mmo I have seen so far.

Well the game is still fine for certain reasons in the long run. I sort of dislike the whole we are doomed scenario lot of people draw on the wall.
For example there is still the PS3 release, an other point is that it is that there will be a lot of improvments down the road. Like the already anounced patches.
An other argument is as long the game in monthly subscription not only produces negative money it will stay. Aside of that behind the game is not a small company that gets suddenly ruined because the game does not create enough profit right now.
SE isn't dying. Some people on these forums are so short sighted.
SE is its own production company. It makes games for worldwide audiences and only games for Japan. For those of you who bring up the last 3 installments of the FF series (FFXII, FFXIII, and FFXIV) as "proof" that SE is on the decline, are just flat out wrong.
FFXII and FFXIII, though really different than turn based FF's of the past, were in fact financially successful. YES, admittedly, FFXIV cost SE a lot of money, but one game will not bring down a company the size of SE. They have too many resources, and too many other projects. They put a lot into the FFXIV basket, but they didn't put all of it.
Even companies like FUNCOM, which botched AoC's launch are still alive and kicking today. To expect FFXIV to fold and then cause SE to collapse is absurd. SE has the money (and the pride) to turn the ship on FFXIV. NO, it will never be as successful as WoW nor Aion for that matter. But, unlike other games, it has a second release coming up. FFXIV will have virtually no competition in the mmo console market. Even if FFXIV maintains an average of 200k subscribers for an extended period of time, its enough to recoup the investment and then start turning a profit.
The only way FFXIV will be dropped is if bleeding money after the PS3 release. That's really hard to imagine because it can't get any worse than it is now. Imagine the next 6 months. SE makes some nice changes by adding content and streamlining the UI (which they've said is what they're currently working on). Let's also imagine that the game now gets a 7-8 rating on most sites for the PS3 release.
People are going to come back. No, not enough to make this game any more than the niche it is, but is it really hard to imagine that 50k US, 50k EU, and 100k Japanese players will play this game? The only reason this game seems like a monumental failure is because it is being crushed by the weight of its expectations.
SE has a track record of making a game great. When people are bored out of their mind with Cataclsym because they finished the content in 2 months, they'll come back. Which is exactly around the time the December content patch will be released.
Numbers here again mean almost nothing. The reason is simple ,just look at SWG and VG,when people started to leave others followed just because there wasn't enough gamers. So those others that left may very well have loved the game ,but they are counted into the numbers of people leaving the game and therfore assumed to hate the game. When i see people EVERYDAY ,constantly asking in chat, what and how they should play and maintain their player,it tells me that the majoirty of people in these games are more worried about what others think, than playing the game,so if a game is not well received they will leave and join some game that has hall of fame numbers.
I left VG but to this day i still feel it is one of the best games on the market, and numbers do not indicate this.Would it be correct to assume that i left VG because i don't like the game?Woudl it be correct to assume that VG was not able to retain my subscription because it is not well received? Not at all,i left because i felt like i was playing solo, something a MMORPG should NOT be,problem is that the majority want to play a MMO solo so even if the game had 10 million players,it would be the player base full of solers that would turn me off and not the game itself.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Well here's something interesting I've just found. The FF XIV Server Population over the month of October. Need I say more:
How come the weekends aren't on there???? it's just odd jumping days and only keeping monday - thursday sometimes...
Good question. Maybe they picked only the days that supported their theory?
The numbers are higher on the weekends for sure. But it still shows a decline from Monday-Thursday, suggesting the weekend numbers show the same thing.

Weekend warriors do not an MMO make. I'd guess the weekend numbers are significantly higher.
From my point of view, the game isn't going to do well till ps3 releases. A significant portion of my LS has quit playing already. Those that still play, play a substantially less amount of time. Those that will actually sub will continue playing because they believe the game will be fixed...eventually (most generally see it being a decent game a year out)
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

Subs are pretty low right now even by FFXI standards, and FFXIV is essentially FREE until the 22nd. If you can't get people to play your game during the free trial period, then there's some serious trouble on the horizon. Let's face it, there is no such thing as a miracle patch. It just doesn't happen in this genre. I don't think the game will have the improvements people want by the time SE starts asking for money. They're going to lose a lot more player.
Don't get me wrong; FFXIV is not going to die. SE could make the buggiest worst piece of shit game ever created and their die-hard fans would line up to buy it, and they know it.

Well we did allready make clear that you cannot compare this situation to the FFXI one, since there was no real competition in the period XI released.
Now there is. So please stop being so naive by saying the new releases won't have an impact!
A lot of people went to FFXIV hoping to find a replacement game, so they will hop as soon as something better comes out. Will they be able to hold them. Who knows, but that is not important since SE will have lost them anyway.
Talking about MMO's being unfinished games ... this is true (in certain regards), but if you manage to play out all content inside the initial free month, I say the game is lacking and NOT finished. Combine this with the fact that SE is not able to provide new content in time before people reach the limit even with their artificial leveling barriers (fatigue etc) then we can for sure say the game was not finished.
And btw, the mmo's are never finished argument is really getting old to try and defend a lacking game.
People play multiple mmo's? That statement is true off course but how about giving me some figures to put it in the right perspective. I for one only have time to play 1 game, and I'm sure a lot of other people also. So unless the gaming population exists of a large amount of people playing multiple mmo's your last statement is moot. And yes money has nothing to do with it, time is the factor!
The assumptions and comparisons in your answer are insane.
"But to think ToR will have a major impact on FFXIV is mistaken."
==> this game will have a major impact on every mmo out there, no exceptions.
this can be said for practically every new MMO that launches these days, the question is will it survive its birth or will it beat APB to the fastest shutdown after release
And every other MMO launched in the last few years has apparantly released 'Finished' . i will believe it when i see it, but as by their very nature MMO evolve they are never truly 'Finished', I think you may have meant to say 'GW2 wont release as a buggy pile of crap that crashes every few minutes, runs perfectly on every PC set up imaginable, on maximum settings, with the servers enver getting congested.
*Or is that what you meant by 'Crap'?*
"in its prime it will hit 500-600k and thats it."
==> speculation again.
Like the poster above you said. FFXIV is in a pickle. Two (not to say more because Rift and Tera are coming to) major releases coming up and they will give FFXIV a run for its money. This situation is different from the FFXI days where there was allmost no competition.
But the game will still have its fan's, whatever other game launches, as Long as SE make enough money to make the game viable and keep updating it, then who really cares?
They already responding to complaints about UI etc in the game and working to resolve them, Will these other games survive their 'HYPE' and retain their playerbase?
Comments
Its also been interesting reading the JP complaints about the game on Amazon jp - Clicky
They appear to share pretty much the exact same concerns as our own, so it can't even be blamed on cultural differences.
Waiting for:EQ-Next, ArcheAge (not so much anymore)

How come the weekends aren't on there???? it's just odd jumping days and only keeping monday - thursday sometimes...
I won't be renewing.
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
Good question. Maybe they picked only the days that supported their theory?
I hope that Soon Guild Wars 2 is out or any other hyped game.It slowly gets serious boring to always hearing the doom from the same people over and over again.
Edit:
Aside of that we can propably save a lot of space if we make a Topic about: "Why we dislike the game and/or SE would save a lot of space around this forum.
There is a site with some data you may use for argueing: http://www.mmodata.net/
Currently playing: EverQuest
Waiting for Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
The numbers are higher on the weekends for sure. But it still shows a decline from Monday-Thursday, suggesting the weekend numbers show the same thing.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
yea lol that is funny... no weekends... who just plays this on weekday ?
Another games numbers doesn't mean its gonna hurt another game either. Those games will still be great an enough population for the game to roll good, i know ff11 did an its not like he said "mainstreet". not everyone vibes to wizards an warriors anyhow. hell your little bro is playing halo 3. when 11 came out you didn't see "omg we have 10000000 million subscribers all leave your game an play ours!...." <-Justin bieber has a nice crowd also lol but doesn't mean everyone else is weaker.
I don't think so also they didn't do it in their last game why would they released as finished now? an this ain't no speculation this is proven fact. no mmoprg released as finished or else there wouldn't be expansions or content updates patches for bugs etc. you would just buy the game an login no PATCHES!...console games even have content updates now days not the same day an age as the 80's
I think you can predict what happens based on the style of gaming. since ultima you can see many games come after that just because they come out doesn't mean everyone goes there... some there even leave or whatever its because they want to play that game anyhow or waiting to see which game will be better etc. Some will be there reguardless especially when ps3 comes i know quite a lot of people who just want the game on their ps3. which is launch #2
Competition is not even really nothing because people just play multiple mmoprgs. as for GW even that game is no sub man you don't have to worry about it lol. just like diablo. when i have diablo i don't have to worry about it as much as something being paid. #'s not a big deal but when your paying for it you kinda wanna play it since it's your money. with the games graphics it just as well can be "competition" to anything out there for long while. haven't really seen nothing yet but you can'y expect it for it to be the same thing 6 months from now like all these charts. reading this forum page is like current stats which are obvious anyhow.
Weekend warriors do not an MMO make. I'd guess the weekend numbers are significantly higher.
From my point of view, the game isn't going to do well till ps3 releases. A significant portion of my LS has quit playing already. Those that still play, play a substantially less amount of time. Those that will actually sub will continue playing because they believe the game will be fixed...eventually (most generally see it being a decent game a year out)
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.
yea, not even wednesday is there... this that graph just sucks lol. missing tons of days. what server are you on? we currently play on mysidia.
God forbid people actually go to work on weekdays instead of playing XIV.
uuhm..o..k..!?
Maybe ... You could also say I look at realistically and you are still wearing your rose tinted glasses.
But hey, tomeeto - tomato ... poteeto - potato, we'll see how much water is left in your glass in 6 months.
Have they managed to get this game to run on the PS3 then - was under the impression that things werent going well in that regard.... though.. given the games current problems, that might well be a good thing for ps3 owners.
Well we did allready make clear that you cannot compare this situation to the FFXI one, since there was no real competition in the period XI released.
Now there is. So please stop being so naive by saying the new releases won't have an impact!
