In an official post on the World of Warcraft forums, players are warned that Deathwing will not be a distant, instanced adversary, but will rather be one that is actively seeking to destroy the inhabitants of Azeroth. Deathwing will randomly choose areas of Azeroth on which to vent his fury and will keep doing so until his 'reign of terror is brought to an end'.
One of Azeroth’s oldest adversaries will soon tear through the Elemental Plane to reforge the world in flame, but this foe won’t be conducting his reign of terror from the confines of a castle or lair. Deathwing is a destructive force the likes of which adventurers have yet to see in World of Warcraft, and his appetite for devastation can only be satisfied by the shattering of the world. Following his explosive escape from Deepholm, Deathwing will cast a deadly shadow over the people of Azeroth as he wreaks indiscriminate havoc across the land.
Once free to terrorize the world, Deathwing will randomly choose territories in Azeroth to attack each day until his ruinous reign is brought to an end. A blackened sky will be the only warning before every living creature caught in his approach is consumed by his terrible fire. The unfortunate victims of his malice will receive a rare Feat of Strength... as well as a repair bill and corpse run.
When Deathwing returns, you'd best keep your eyes on the skies.

So...
You could be playing the game, going about your business in a zone, and all of a sudden be the victim of a zone wide "deep breath" of sorts that one shots you...
Sounds more annoyinng than Devilsaurs and Fel Reavers, only it can happen in many different zones.
I can understand the angle Blizzard is going for, but if this is going to be happeing for months, if not a year or two, until the Deathwing instance is unlocked, and finally downed... I can see this as becoming a tiresome mechanic to have to deal with for most WoW players.
Yeah but you get an achievement... for dying randomly. That makes it all better. right?
Well, I guess we will see how "rare" that achievement is.
All die, so die well.
You know what it reminds me of in a way is in Diablo 2: LoD when Uber Diablo would suddenly spawn in your game at the next available boss site. It only happened to me once but...well, it was ugly. :P
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Sounds to me like it will also give players a buff so it won't be so bad.

Oh come on,
we still don't have an idea of what the real mechanic of it would be, or how it'll harm the players if it ever would... I'm sure blizzard, the king of bending ov... to the player's will, will make it as harmless as ... rats.
Or maybe I'm wrong
but still, don't assume.
Give me a break!
Blizz tries to do something different and fun, and you give them grief for it.
I tell ya, no wonder mmo's have no innovation and are just clones of one another - cause whenever they try and do something different, the players whine and complain.
This is a random area each day. The universe of WoW is huge. AND you get a warning when it's going to happen. So stop complaining and enjoy the world and lore they've created.
Also, this has been kinda done before in EQ1 - Lake of ill Omen and that nasty dragon that would kill everyone in the zone every once in awhile. Good fun that was, and created lots of havoc and memories
Not for me...I pass...
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

K seriously, this is cool. Some people make every attempt to hate on this game. Go away, just play some other game that makes you happy and forget about this one.
i have to agree, adding a little extra flare to this already astonishing game keeps me coming back......every time.
I don't know what the complaining is about, this sounds pretty epic to me
Although I have nothing against it I have to disagree with a poster on the first page since this is not innovative just taken from other games but I have nothing against it like I said already.
Last Chaos for example has something similar and it happened to me and my friend (You are fighting monsters then a message says something powerful appeared in the area a second later poof dead a boss dragon spawned in the area 1 hitting me) and it's not enjoyable but thinking about it now it's kinda funny.
Still have fun whoever plays the game.
Peace.
I'm not a wow player nor a fan of the game in all honesty... just doesn't appeal to me, having said that this seems a rather cool idea. Definatly adds a little spice to the game
The fact that some people just want to play the game they payed for, instead of having to worry about being ganked by the computer for no reason?
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
So, I resubbed to take part in the pre-cata world event only to find out that the world event is me dieing?
Hell. Yes.
The screenshots of Deathwing in flight alone will be worth it. Check out the beta video of it happening.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
this is actually cool.
i hope he also spawns inside cities sometimes, that would be awesome.
although to make this event brilliant theyd have to make deathwing land, attack and then eventually get killed by players who come to attack it.
" Hoo Yaa "
" Death Who "
MAGA
actually nope, not killed, just flies away once he gets to low health.
lol a company trys to do something different - to add a little variety and fun to their games - people cry - and then you cry because nothing ever different comes out. Seems like game companies can't win.
sounds like what happens with the sleeper
As I said, it depends on the exact mechanic and how long it sticks around.
Sure it may seem novel for the first few days, weeks, or even a couple months. But, if this continues on for a year where players essentially need to stop whatever they're doing in said zone and leave to avoid death, I can see it as becoming an uneccessarily tedious mechanic to deal with. Especially if the only say to stop deathwing is locked away in an instance that is locked away in several content patches after release.
Yes it's speculation on my part, but I see to potential for a very annoying mechanic if it's not handled properly. Much like the zombie invasion. Some people loved it, others were extremely annoyed by how much the event mechanics were abused by certain players.
Wow, Blizzard doing something for the casuals to complain about, this is surely a rare sight.
/agreed
I like the idea.
These games just don't have enough danger.
I remember "Orfen" in Lineage 2 who would appear and chase you to the gates of the sea of spores. I found it some of the most fun I've ever had in these games.
And she would (and did) stomp your head too!
I'd like more of this type of thing in these games.

Actually, it's not really so different. Other MMO's have some form of this for years.
