Is Ultra-realism really the way to go?

If someone can pull it off while maintaining good framerates/performance, go right ahead. I'd like a game with realistic character/animal models, plants, etc., with detailed animation, and stylized environments (as long as there's not a desert next to a tundra, of course).

If it's cartoony then it better be manga style (beat me to itimage)

Stylized with the graphical qualities of let's say a Monsters, Inc. would be awesome.

But if you consider the movie AVatar to be designed as ultra-realistic, wouldn;t that be cool to play in that kind of environment?

Cartoonish style is fine, most games that go for "photorealistic" 3d end up right in the uncanny valley for many players anyway.

Now cel shading is another story... whoever came up with that idea should be shot with a sledgehammer.

If it were possible, I would like to see the ultra realism graphics in games. Not so much emulating real life, but rather soft edges and  completely hidden polygons.  After all, the more "natural" the graphics seem would increase the immersion level of the game, and that is what I really want.

Ideally, the game would have the customization ability to make each character suit the personal preferences of the individual, but the textures, bump-mapping, specular lighting, shading and all the graphics would be such a high a level as they could emulate real life.

This, of course, is an unrealistic desire, but I do feel that it is what games should strive for.

All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.

I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.

I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.

I don't hate much, but I hate Apple© with a passion. If Steve Jobs was alive, I would punch him in the face.

I always go with stylized because I don't like the idea of my game becoming old and ugly five years after release. Eq2 is one of those games that look terrible now while a game like wow, lotro and War will look pleasing to the eye for damn near 10 years.

So the choice is between... looking terrible now, or looking terrible later.

Almost no MMOs have GOOD stylized graphics. Wind Waker is a great ageless game, WoW doesn't match it in the slightest.

And games like Dark Age of Camelot, that haven't been updated since 2004 STILL look better than many MMOs, despite having realistic graphics.

I wouldnt consider DAoC to have "realistic" graphics. So it would make sense that it looks good even now.

    Er... how do you figure?

    How is this not realistic?
