Hm I would guess about makeing a picture about the game only based on the forums and several 'funny' youtube videos. Makeing an own opinion is always a good choice in my point of view, even as I would advice a buddy key by the current opinion from a lot of people. but if you have the money it should be no problem at all.
As for servers I would say Besaid would be a good choice or Lindblum.
I have been avoiding the game due too the huge amount of bad reviews, I have to see the game for myself.
I was a big FFXI fan and am disappointed on what I have been hearing...need to see it with my own eyes.
That's cool. I know what you mean. I agree you should check it out free if possible. Seriously that first bite of "OMG I paid for this?" really stings.
I didn't elect to play after the betas but I have had that feeling multiple times in the past. With something you really feel strongly towards like an IP that you grew up with, the feeling is enhanced to ridiculous. So I strongly recommend you get a buddy key etc. before buying it.

Thanks sov, would you recommend any server? Or are they all about the same?
Hard to say. I have a character on Trabia (which might be my permanent character and Besaid.
It seems like a person can only have one character per server as I tried making other characters for Besaid and it didn't come up as an option. Not sure why.
As far as installing, I had to install twice, The first time I installed the game which had a reasonable patch time and a second for my new machine.
also, a reasonable patch time. Less than an hour. I have regular dsl so your time could be even less than that.
My advice for the game is to play more like an old school game. Meaning, don't get caught up in the whole levequest grind. Do a few so you can get some money for some crafting tools (took me a bit to figure that one out as you will speak to an npc that says "we have everything here for crafting" yet I couldn't find tools Seems they were all in the town in the market area) and then go out and explore, kill some monsters, figure out crafting if that's your thing.
I mean, in Lineage 2 I would go to a field and grind mobs. The same can work just as well. Of course, if you want to do the guild leves youc an do them, the xp and money are helpful and they are a way to get some progression in.
Personally I think the main stories are done really well.
Oh, and for my money the two best cities/towns are, in this order, Gridania, Lima Limosa (or whatver it's called. the last one, the desert city is pretty but the story didn't grab me. I'll be continuing to see if it gets better. Essentiall you get to pick your starter city.
And by "best" I mean as far as the first story parts with cut scenes and characters. I really like Gridania. Also, the area is very beautiful. However, it's a bit more linear feelign than the other two places. Still I don't mind.

You can make more than one charakter ona server actually, but the servers are sometimes blocked for new charakters if there is reached a certain population limit on the server, in order to make them not overfilled. They normally get removed after some time passed as far I know.
Some people sort of hed the bad luck to redo a charakter and than the server was not an option anymore because someone else took that place or they just kept up the limitation. I am not exactly sure how that system works.

Ok, thanks for letting us is on this earth shattering news.
Get out of my thread, I have no time for trolls.
Thing is ... I have a sneeky suspicion why you posted this.
(I will keep an eye on "Your thread" and will let you know when my suspicion comes true)
Sorry? Please fill me in?
Frogs are sneaky by nature.
But you have to raise an eyebrow to someone that posts they'd rather pay to trial a game that's rated at this level than try it out for free. That's just not natural. LoL
"losing out on 30 is no biggie for me" HAHAHAHA you are silly.
Go for it and add your voice to the discussion.

I was a big FFXI fan and am disappointed on what I have been hearing...need to see it with my own eyes.
Well that's why I wanted to try it. the visuals looked stunning but people were really down on a variety of things. However, some of the things they didn't like were really non-issues to me.
I'm used to jut grinding mobs and find it relaxing so not a biggie. the interface thing isn't really an issue for me either. So I have to do things differently? So what!. I some cases, especiallyy crafting, it's a bit drawn out. But "whatever".
I get a small amount of interface lag but the game is rather slow movign anyways so it really isn't a big deal. I was able to figure out most of the issues that players had problems with within a minute or two so being stumped by "what do I do" wasn't an issue.
I mean things like how to move the map "I,J,K,L" or when you die just open your menu and hit the "return" option, or just finding the first camp you have to go to.
About finding the first camp you have to go to: Even though the npc shows you, after you open the map you won't see where it is. So just leave the area you are in and go to the next map and you will see it. But as a pointer, for Gridania it's south, Lima Limosa it's east and Uldanai or (again) whatever these places are called, it's north (I think that's right, just tried for the first time yesterday).
Also, you have to adopt a more whimsical approach to the mobs in the game. At least on the lower lvls. Yes, you might fight a small ferret or small mouse but these are killer ferrets and mice. Not to be toyed with!
Oh, and you can die reasonably easy so don't let it surprise you. Stay away from dodos at lvl one. even though they con what should be a reasonble fight color.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
Hehe sure if the patcher takes you a lot to download patches go to my documents in the final fantasy xiv folder and download them with utorrent or something else.
Also if you use xfire I switch it on while playing ffxiv I'm not able to browse with it (It just stand there with a black screen and on 1000 or more fps lol) but I can chat and watch what's the time and take pics :P

Well, besides your fetish for frogs anyways.

Also for now till they add the search retainer http://ffxiv.yg.com/ you can check for items AND it tells if you anyone is selling them ingame!!! (It takes some time to update but it works)

On launch day for the standard edition it took about 6 to 8 hours to download the updates
Against everyone's recommendation, you are going to go out and buy it anyways? Well, good luck. You cant's say you weren't warned.
The moment I read "It's like" or "WoW" is the moment I stop reading your post.
Three scenarios:
1. The patcher will work fine and you'll get 1mb/sec
2. The patcher will shit the bed and you'll get 0-16kb/sec
3. They fixed the patcher.
If you end up with number one, it won't take long at all. There isn't much to download.
If you end up with number two, it could take you quite awhile.
Forward the ports the patcher uses if it's giving you problems. I'm not saying it's a 100% garunteed fix, but it worked for me.
