Torchlight 2 More Anticipated than Diablo III

Who would have thought ? Amazing when you make D3 all cartoony like and make people wait for over 8 years for it.

Remember those pesky clones we were talking about? Runic Games’ Torchlight Action RPG is one such brazen flavour of the Diablo model, admittedly with a poignant twist. Many of the people who worked on Diablo actually had a hand in Torchlight, like former Blizzard employees (and brothers) Max and Erich Schaefer, designers of the first two Diablo games, and Diablo’s sound designer, Matt Uelmen.

In fact, most reviewers of Torchlight described the game as the best Diablo since, well, Diablo. Never heard of it? Don’t worry as, unlike its prodigious ancestor, Torchlight (the first one) is planned for a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 release before the year is out.

But on to its sequel. Torchlight II will (magically?) appear on PC and OSX early next year. Of course, considering what we just said about the inaugural title making an appearance on consoles, don’t be surprised if the dungeon-crawler also graces Sony’s and Microsoft’s platforms sometime later in the year. We suppose a lot will depend on the first game’s reception and sales.

The follow-up will continue on the first game’s random dungeon generating process, with two new classes (Railman and Outlander) announced so far. The first game’s pet system is also due to return.

Our interest in Torchlight II obviously stems from our love for Diablo, the fact that the apprentice has surpassed the master a fact we’ve noted but deem almost irrelevant. After all, the difference in scores each title garndered was marginal. We’re just eager to strap on some weapons and crack open the sepulchres, whether it’s in Sanctuary or in Torchlight, we’re easy.

Ok... I still want Diablo 3 more than Torchlight 2. Any day. What is this personal rampage against Blizzard and Diablo 3 of late?

  • gaeanprayergaeanprayer Member UncommonPosts: 2,341

Complaining about d3 being cartoony like is stupid when you link to Torchlight which is 100x worse.

I don't find d3 to be cartoony to begin with.

No rampage at all. It is just news I'm sharing like I always do. The other day I posted news on COD Black OPS peraps selling 18 mill. LOL do not read more into it than it really is. Some may not like my opinions on D3 but thats ok too! :)

    I wouldn't say I want Torchlight 2 MORE than D3,  but I definitely don't want D3 more than Torchlight 2.

Torchlight was Diablo with aspects of Diablo 2 added in.

It was essentially the same game. My playthrough found no gameplay differences or new ideas that were not in Diablo or Diablo 2. It just seemed easier to play.

    I am interested in D3 over TL2.

    imo T2 > D3.

The one reason I never was able to get into torchlight was the lack of multiplayer.  Dungeon crawls, to me, just arent that fun if you cant do it with others.

I love the Diablo universe and at one time, wished that it had been chosen for Blizzard's MMO instead of Warcraft. Now that I''ve seen how that has turned out, I'm glad they didn't. Still, I'm afraid that D3, with it's growing focus on online play and PvP is going to fall short with a lot of people who fell in love with the originals. I'm more looking forward to Torchlight 2.

Still wish I could get original Diablo to run on my Windows 7 64-bit.

Hmm. I can't honestly pick a favorite here. I played single player of both games and loved them both. I found Torchlight to be MUCH easier, which, I am often in the mood for over something more challenging.  I find the game of life to be OVERLY challenging, so sometimes I admittedly like games that are a bit less challenging and more just downright FUN.

I guess I just made it sound like Torchlight is my favorite, now that I think about it.

Okay...adding multiplayer....I loved D2 LOD Online back in the day. Geeee.....I just don't know that I can pick a favorite here.

I dont care whos anticipating what, I love Torchlight but I'll still take Diablo over it any day.

Cannot wait for Diablo 3. Looks incredible.

You can.  It works fine for me.  Well as long as you do one thing.  Open your process manager, shutdown explorer.exe.  Presto, works fantastic.

As for whether or not D3 will surpass expectations is to be seen.  I hated what they planned for Diablo II.  Dreaded it.  Now I love the game, I do still play D1, because single-pass is just fantastic, I actually got a singlepass Warrior to Hell Catacombs with no deaths(Shopping was a loud) and I used an Axe to boot!.  Mainly I play Singleplayer as I found battle.net to not be worth the hassle, and I imagine that it maybe moot if they don't allow LAN access, but I'll wait before I judge as D2 was an is still fun for me.

Considering just how washed out and un-diablo the World of DiabloCraft III looks, i am not surprised.

Played TLII at gamescom and loved it.

Blizz should learn from Runic on how to make sequels that RETAIN the main features and awesomeness of original.

Diablo III is nothing like Diablo games. its like a washed out rpg with warcraft-style cheese. In there we go to quest for parts of crafting materials of necklace of McEvil, together with trusty night-elf Demon Hunter, friendly orc barbarian and friendly goofy goblin witch-doctor, while we merely travel through washed up fantasy landscape with dark and light war. Blizz, thats how you create new games/franchise. Thats not how you create sequels/successors.

Torchlight II from what i have seen looks fabulous. Its like they took all what made Torchlight I good, expanded upon it and got rid of what made it less good. Oh and then they added new sweet epic stuff. IMO it had everything that I would have expected from DIII, before it was revealed.

Torchlight II is way more diablo successor than Diablo III, tbh.

Yeah uh, I don't know about that one.

D3 has been in developement for what seems like forever, and there are those who love waiting every single day and overhyping themselve, now that there is what - a year(?) left I would think they'd be getting pretty ansy. It's also regcognizable for players of other genres, plenty of die hard FPS'ers with limited hack'n'slash experience waiting for this one too.

There's no arguement from me that Torchlight 2 will probably be the better game out of the two though, the changes they've been announcing for D3 totally lost my interest (and i've been a hardcore diablo fan since the beginning), a lot of things i've grown to love are gone and apparently it's taken on the WoW style of leveling up too (automated stats).

But for a pure single player dungeon crawling experience those two games aren't even in my mind anymore, i'm actually looking forward to the new Dungeon Siege the most. Look it up you'll probably be impressed.

Torchlight 2 is being made by the lead people who worked on Diablo 1& 2.

Diablo 3 is being made by... Blizzard developers who have mostly nothing to do with Diablo prior to Diablo 3.

For me that's enough of a reason to be watching Torchlight 2 with more interest than Diablo 3.

    You forgot to mention that:

Torchlight II has MATT UELMAN, the main man behind the music in diablo series, while

Diablo III has....guys from wow to make music and stuff....

    Yeh. TLII > DIII

Apparantly you missed the main reason why torchlight is listed in this site's game list.

First step is Torchlight I. In a sense its a diablo, reinvented with better graphical engine.

Second Step is Torchlight II. Its a diablo with huge open world, co op, lan co op, and whole other stuff of coool stuff.

Third step is full-fledged mmo-arpg set in Torchlight world and based on Torchlight lore.

I learned not to drink the cool-aid my second or third mmo. Torchlight was a decent game ... but they haven't proven to me they can do a multiplayer game well yet. Like the first I will pick the "new" one up when I am between games ... I have no hopes for it though. We all enjoyed D1/2 coop because it was awesome at the time ... we have all since grown as gamers and our tastes are diffrent.. the old flavor might be a bit bitter now that my tongue is more experienced.

Stating Torchlight 2 is more anticipated than D3 though is .... laughable.

    [Mod Edit]

torchlight 1 wasn't even as good as the ten year old d2 which probably still sells more copies today.

  • FibsdkFibsdk Member Posts: 1,112

Torchlight Is too cartooney. It looks like toontown all over again. D3 is much more dark. Besides I can find more sites claiming Diablo 3 to be more anticipated besides your personal opinion on the matter. Peoples tastes can't really be debated.

Why not just bump one of your older "I think Diablo 3 suck" posts? Would have saved you some time writing this.

In WoW's defense, the music is one of its better aspects. But I'm also looking forward to TL2 more than D3... well, they're pretty even. I should say I know I'll be playing TL2 (waaaaaaaay) before D3.

Im sorry, ill go laugh in a corner or something....

Diablo III looks like world of warcraft with decreased brightness. The dialogue, the style, the characters, everything feels like out of some comic book.

Torchlight II and Torchlight I looked stylized and still retained that creepy distanced, you being alone in the jungle, feeling Diablo I and II had..

I'm not too big on the way Blizzard is handling the models in D3, looks too WoW-ish imo, but I'll still play it regardless. The arena PvP is kind of a disappointment too, which I think they'll try to push. Hopefully you won't get rewarded for it with anything other than titles. Then again, not like I really care too much about the arena since I'll only be playing it for the co-op anyways.
