Yes, I remember those days that you ran for hours up and down Strangleton Vale to find a new quest giver miles away for yet another collect quest run (SV papers come to mind).
Some people really do think that crossing on foot SV for days from north to south and east to west is the equivalent of "fun".
Some people really do think that collecting blue colored gear is more "epic" than purple gear.
Back then I played for colored pixels in the gear department.
These days I play for lasting achievements / titles and gear is simply a temporary tool to have long term MMORPG fun. These long term goals don't wash away with the next batch of colored pixeled gear.
MMORPG play of the old days were too limited (gear), too boring, too time consuming and had less of everything.
Nostalgia is a strange beast, but it will not give you the actual present day options gaming fun.
I don't think pushing a button for 15 minutes to walk without any further meaning than ... to walk is fun.

It's called immersion.
It's supposed to make you feel like you are really part of that world and you are travelling through an actual living world.
If you are complaining that a flight path from the middle of the continent to the northern tip is too long you shouldn't be play this type of game.
I remember getting that level 40 mount then the epic at 60. At that time the game still somewhat made you work for your mount. It seems Blizz really dumbed everything down since then. Its pretty easy to get what you want now. I hope with the Cataclysm content they will make it more challenging, and if not I think I am still going to enjoy all the new level 1-60 revamp of the world and I am really looking forward to the archeology proffession.
I think the main reason alot of these games dumb down over time is to keep the current population moving along. People who have played every day since 04 want to get through the lower levels quicker. By making th lower levels easier then these dedicated players don't get as frustrated or bored.
