There is a bigger rush if there is some kind of death penalty and a bigger feeling of power if you gain something for winning. FPS is safe gaming because if you die it doesn't matter much. In some MMORPGs you could have some title where if you die once it will set you back months or gear/coin that is taken by the killer so I tend to get more adrenaline. Sometimes I will get up and pee in the middle of a FPS match. I can't do that in every game unless I log out or spend some time finding a safe spot to go AFK and hope nobody comes. That has excitment that instant gratification games do not. I hope you can understand . ..

Player skill is the ability to make the right choice and execute on it.   Map knowledge is part of the ability to make the right choice, so you're talking about player skill.  It's a player-controlled thing, rather than an arbitrary "you lose because you're level 1 and I'm level 80" game mechanic.

It's true some FPSes involve progression.  And yes, that dilutes skill.   But by far less than typical MMORPGs (I can't really hope to beat a level 80 as a level 60, but I can and frequently do beat max-level players in Modern Warfare 2 when I'm low level.)  If you thought I was saying all FPSes were 100% skill with no other factors involved, I'm sorry I didn't make that clear.

The level difference is very much a 'player-controlled' thing.  It is fully up to the player what level they attain just as it is fully up to the player if they know the map in an FPS.  The real difference is that in an FP you can still win even if you do not prepare due to luck or just natural ability.  In a MMORPG you have to do the work beforehand to be competive.
