Why do males play male characters?

This subject has been beaten to death.

Your character's gender has no indiciation, whatsoever, of your sexual orientation. If it did then it is all coinsidences.

You cannot say all males playing male characters are homosexual or vice versa. Where's the link in that? it doesn't make any sense to me.

There are too many reasons for someone to choose the gender of their character.

I used to play male characters only because I am male and I always did for a LONG time. Then one time I created a female character because the 3D model and the armor model looked much better than the male version of her race. That's just one reasons.

But I am now rolling more female characters than males and I really don't know exactly why even though I do roll male ones but they are usually goofy or older guys (gandalfish). While one of the reasons why I personally roll a female character is because of the female's sexual beauty. Her hair, her nice body curves just the idea of a scantly-clad amazon warrior. That's bad ass and I am in love with it.

But I appreicate that males are still rolling male characters exclusively otherwise the game world would be weird with female-only population.

You do realise that it’s about as gay as losing in PvP? And in fact the guy who said this to you could have been just winding you up. Which is what the word is used for these days, regardless of that being right or wrong.

I played one MMO as a gal, the backside was my reason too, never again. It was getting propositioned on the beach that made me realise that I could put up with a macho butt. :)

Since then I don’t even notice it, except it asian MMO’s where you lean forward as you run as if to say, ‘Hey I have a bum you know!’ :)

Funny, last time I was 'propositioned' was about 5 years ago on CoH.  Since I RPed my characters for years in previous games all the time, I just role with it for lolz.  Pretty funny when random passersby stop and watch me berate another hero.

Wish I coulda bashed the dude's head in though, as my character concept called for that reaction >.<  Which would have been funny to watch as well.  Me chasing some other hero yelling out "dirty pervert" as I try to rend him a new one.  I'd probably chase him around the zone for a hour yelling just to embarrass the crap out of him. He'd never get to play that character again without being called a perv. *snicker*

I only play male characters, but I always wear a dress while I play MMORPGs.

What? Doesn't everybody do that? No? Seriously?

So, people (some people anyway), seem to not get why males play female characters. The reason for me is not to get free l33t, but its because I'm not into looking at male a** all the time. I prefer females, not men...but thats just me.

Seems some people are always confused about males playing females, but to me, its more confusing a male playing another male and looking at his backside the whole time (unless he is into that, then I guess whatever, I don't care).

Kind of tired of getting complaints that I should play a male when I am a male...no thanks..got kicked out of my WoW guild because of it, one of the reasons I posted this here.

your in game characters are a direct reflection of your inner self

if you like to go around imagining yourself as a frilly woman, then you likely are gay/bi whatever.

real men manifest themselves as male in all aspects of life including game characters, we are masculin and if we stare at a woman, we dont want it to just be ourself in drag.

    To make it simple:

Some people like to pretend they are there character and leave there real world behind them, thus they tend to play there gender typically.

The other spectrum some people like to think of there character as a companion that they share these adventures with or otherwise seperate themselves from there character and view the game more like a movie which they get to cast their lead character and make them look anyway they want.

either way these two mindframes are very different and often argued for the reason that one side does not understand the other. I personally play my gender, but part of that is my wife also plays her gender and we like to play as a couple. In the end, if there is something someone can complain about, there is someone out there to do the complaining.

This is an example of the I am my character mind frame. Where as the original post is an example of the movie watchers mind frame. Honestly I think for the majority of players this is the two mind frames that people are dealing with.

I find it that Developers spend more time on female characters then male. I have played alot of MMOs and i find it that the females are modelled better then the male characters.

For instance the Male humans in WoW. Why do they have forearms like popeye. So for little reasons like that i play females cause in most game (not all) they are modelled and animated better.

I make very manly characters to play, but wear a frilly dress while I play them.

    all arguments aside

making yourself appear a woman out of game = transvestite (clothing makeup ect)

pretending to be a woman on the internet = nettvestite (playing an opposite sex character)

theres no excuse, just that one glaring fact, that you internally, feel the need to portray yourself as something you are not, all the excuses are just thrown out to hide the underlying nature.

Do you seriously care if someone is having fun playing a game as the opposite gender of their own, or worry about why they are doing it?

    I dont'.

Why would anyone need a "excuse"? An excuse for what? Playing a video game and having fun?

I use male characters mostly because I find myself uncomfortable using a female character (Unless it's some demonic/non human race) with how cloths are usually on female.

I want to look epic/neat not like a whore (Obviously not all games does this).

Do people really set the camera up so they are looking at their toons rearend?

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

    This is silly.

Some people also look at the char they play as someone else and not as a representation of them.

Most MMORPGs offer a choice between first person, and third person. Since you can't see your feet in first person, and you don't have 180 degree of view like your real life vision in first person, many people use third person, especially doing things like trying to walk up stairs with no railing.

IN third person, you usually follow your character when it is walking or running, meaning it's butt is in the center of your screen.

OK, I tend to be scrolled out pretty far so i can see all around my toon.  Additionally, I set the view from more top/back so the Butt is there but not dominant in the frame.

Oh noes! Think of all those poor tranvestites that played the Lara Croft games!

The fact is, some people socialize in games as if they were in real life (which I think is not healthy).

They are terrified of hitting on a female character (shouldnt' be doing that in games anyway, go to a dating site for that) and finding out a male is playing that character.

They view wandering around in a zone in WoW, exactly like they were at the local grocery store. They expect everyone to behave the same way, as if they were meeting them for real, in person.

    Again, not healthy, IMO.

What if the person playing that female toon is actually a female. And she's 9 years old. Then hitting on her doesn't make yu "gay" it makes you a pedophile.

Personally, I'm be ten times more worried about that, than being "gay".

I'ts not a crime to be gay. Hitting on 9 year olds? Illegal in all States, plus pretty disgusting and about as low as you can get.
