Funcom announces that Anarchy Online will be the first major western live MMO without a subscription fee. In a unique move Funcom is removing all cost barriers in the ultimate sci-fi MMORPG, allowing all new players to enter and stay, free of cost! At the same time Funcom is departing from the obligatory need to register with a credit card, making for an easier entrance and registration process.
In an increasingly competitive market for fantasy MMO games, Anarchy Online stands out as the superior alternative if you like online RPGs and sci-fi. Not only will this new and totally free approach allow everyone tired of elves, fairies and gnomes to enter a futuristic RPG world full of fun action, it will also make it possible for those who are sci-fi fans to explore a world hailed and rewarded as the best sci-fi MMO available today.
Funcom has always been recognized as an inventive MMO developer. This unique move will allow us to test important new business models prior to announcing future online games, while also giving everyone the chance to experience the best online sci-fi RPG totally free of cost said Trond Arne Aas, President and CEO of Funcom.

Man, you got me excited there ... I was thinking great I can keep AO running for my change of pace game.
Unfortunately, this only applies to new accounts registered between certain dates, and it does not apply to the expansion packs =(
Yeah it's still a great thing ... new people can play the basic game free. Just doesn't help me at all, lol.

Itll suck though if you actually like the game and decide to get some expansion packs and you get charged for those and the monthly fees from then on. But yes more companies should do this especially ones that run aging games that need a huge influx of new players. EA should do this for uo but theyre too money hungry to see the sense of it. Shadowbane Horizons and Asherons Call might wanna look at using this type of business model as well to reinvigorate their game with a fresh basic player base.

Free download, free play. Just no expansions, and you will likely want to play with the expansions...that's their enticement, and it's a good offer.

Should Funcom deem that a too high-increase in server load or other unforeseen events will lessen the experience for existing players the offer will be terminated at our discretion. Yes is a great fair offer, a year of anarchy online free. They could get a all new wave of customers if they play their cards right. While i wait my wow order, hey, why not give it a try. who knows.

men, now that eq2 and wow are out mmorpgs prices are going down fast. I think its a great thing, nothing is better for customer than a competitive market, there is no room for greedy companies anymore or they are gonna sink.

Anyone else having trouble downloading this beast?
-- I know its attracting many people, but on DSL I'm getting like 25kb/sec. I think I might just wait a couple days...if your having the same problems.

Ahahaha, good. I'm not the only person having trouble with that. I dont think you can download it any other way, but I'll just wait a couple days...or randomly get up at 3 and start it up.

well im downloading on bit torrent now cause the cd download one is gonna take 11 hours and bit torrent will take 6...

Its probably cause im Canadian. Crap, bit torrent is going to take 177 hours now.
