It wasn't really losing the arrows or my mount that killed me, it was the time I have to put into this game (minus all the ganks being a noob) skilling up, getting pvp viable to get back at all the jerks who loved to prey on noobs. I just found that I am not one for the open world full loot pvp. Some people thrive on ganking others and stealing loot, I guess my personality is more towards exploration, meeting others, developing my character (and it not taking me a year to have a pvp viable one).
I did love Darkfall when it came to living in a big world, and having a great clan who relied on each other. But in the end it comes down to I only have a few hours a day to play mmo's now. In those few hours I want to see some sign of development in my character. In Darkfall it seems having a decent character will take me a very long time. I always loved sandbox games, just not the full loot ones, as I have found out after playing this game.
I see. Well, even if darkfall didnt had a grind, even if you had 100 on everything, DF woulnt still be for you. Preparation before you go out pvp, just learning about darkfall as a new player, trying to get enough time to keep up with your group all day, being good as a player demand a lot of effort and time too.
I think its the same for most mmorpg's anyway. You dont do raid in wow if you know that you wont have enough time to play for long enough.
Still, Just try to get use to DF, join a clan with players who are willing to teach you how to play. If you can play 3-4 hours every day after work instead of watching TV, if you can play more then 5 hours+ during the weekend or atleast 2-3 day off during the week, then time is not the problem. All you need is knowledge.
What gets me turned off though of this game is, yes I am a casual player, but you have the players who can play 24/7, and I will NEVER catch up to them, it will take a year or more (unless of course you do the afk grind which to me why should I have to? That right there says there is a flaw in their system). I am waiting to see about the prestige classes and the offline skillups to see if I will resubscribe to this game. Til then I am mmo less, there is no more good sandbox games out there.rip pre cu SWG.
Oh, and I know the developers said they will never make a server that isn't full loot/open pvp, but really, a lot of players who are carebears would subscribe to this game if they did. There is tons to explore, and if they had certain areas pvp hotspots (around player cities) that would be fun imo. But now that i have a VIP key for RIft here is hoping that game rocks :P
No one play 24-7(I understand the sarcasm...) Like you noticed, all DF players who are ready to pvp all exploited the game. For a casual gamer, this is the only way to catch up, the reason why DF lost his subscribers and the reason why im not playing either.
I never played SWG. In fact, my 1st mmorpg was wow. The day i tried DF, was the day i lose my appeal to all wow clones out there. Rift is one of these wow clone in my opinion.
Just like you, im waiting for the prestige class before i play DF again. There will be offline progression too so players who refuse to exploit like you and i, will be able to progress over night legitly.
And again, if full loot is your only concern, just try to make an effort once all the feature to fix the game will get introduced atleast. Join a clan like i asked you to do and learn to survive. Beside, you can easily get access to the best gear in darkfall. What most players wear are bone armor, GS Rank40-50, Bow rank 40+ and staff from Rank20+. Once you done getting use to the game, you wont mind dying since these items are easy to collect in your bank if you are in a clan and focus on archery. My character is still new and i already got a big collection in my bank.
Last thing, you need to work on your keybinding + hotbar. This is an fps game so your reflects need to be fast like a lightning shock. Read guides and ask quesiton often, either in the forum or in game. Thats what i did and i did perfectly.
Thanks. It is nice to have someone out there who doesn't make fun of/tear down my ideas and thoughts. I actually do have a few rank 40 bows/2h swords/staffs in my bank from my clan. My clan is a newer one but also a pretty big clan. I found though you get ganked 10x more while in a clan city (as to be expected). But as my clanmates will say at least you have a bunch around to help defend your death lol. I am still getting used to the full loot, harsh atmosphere (and yes some harsh people as well) who play this game. I love the concept, graphics and the sandbox feel of this game. I have been trying to find an alternative all day today but nothing else seems worth it until I check out Rift next weekend.
... all DF players who are ready to pvp all exploited the game. For a casual gamer, this is the only way to catch up, the reason why DF lost his subscribers and the reason why im not playing either.
This could not be further from the truth. In fact most of the top PvP'ers are not the same guys who started early in the game. I can personally beat them 1v1 and I have never exploited the game. I know people with FAR less playtime than myself who beat me regularly.
Just because you don't understand the game game mechanics and don't skill up efficiently does not make the game imbalanced.

Realbigdeal, I'm a casual player. I never macroed nor afk swam. I never exploited the game. I put the hurt on people, thank you very much. I'm guessing you left the game because you want everything handed to you and all of your needs catered to.
[Mod Edit]
No, im not the type you think i am. I am only against macroers because they are the one killing mmorpg's. You, saying that you are a casual gamer and never progressed while AFK is not helping the situation at all. If all DF players did played legitly, i would still play since a lot of players would still be around my level. So, not only i would have much more players around to kill, but also to do quests with. When i hear players getting 50 GS mastery in 3 days because he macroed, i know something is wrong.

Do you think the offline skilling implementation will bring people like you back to the game?
i see this as a new feature somethign that help people who dont macro and dont play 24/7 have a chance to increase certain skills offline its pretty cool. it not a game breaker or has nothing to do much with it.
Only thing that will bring me back to the game is if being red means something and not getting back to blue by just farming noobs. I am sure a ton have rage quit cause of that. I love the concept of the game just make pking blues hurt a little more.

alligment system needs some tweaks but I cant undestand why is this so much game breking thing for you ??? Game is so much more than red and blue.
You've just learned, first-hand, why this type of game has never caught on with the masses. The vast majority of people playing MMORPGs do not have any fun in an open-PVP, full-loot system. That is why these types of games are developed by hobbyists and enthusiasts (i.e. indies), and not by major companies.
CCP begs to differ, sir. Of course masses will probably never be enthralled by sandbox PvP, full-loot games, but if CCP managed to do something like that with a space airship game only, imagine what they can do in a fantasy game...
Or, in the World of Darkness settings with today's spreading love for vampires, werewolves, zombies etc.
Originally posted by MadnessRealm I don't think OP's problem with DarkFall is that he lost his loot, but rather HOW he lost it. New Players are unable to defend themselves for several months, they get killed so easily by Veterans and Veterans can catch up anytime with Bunnyhopping.
New Players can't: 1:Kill the Vet. 2:Run away on foot from the Vet 3:Run away on a mount from the Vet
The only thing that's left for them is to stand still and wait to get killed/ganked. Any effort of running away is futile for the first few weeks.
That's what seems to be OP's issue with the game. Loot is too easy to come across to matter that much. But being completly defenseless without any possibility of survival is ludicrous.
This is the worst feature of the current "WoW" type games, and it's leaking into the sandbox games too. Lower level players simply have no recourse at all. In Eve the lower level players at least have the option to try and avoid a fight; you're never truly safe, but you at least have some options.
It takes something that's supposed to encourage you to play better or longer into a punishment just for playing.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Seriously, a newb can hide. A newb can pay attention. A newb can pick his fights. Expecting the game to do this for you is silly.
These WoW kids just want to feel "special" if they make stupid mistakes or not.

Then dont worry, Aventurine are aware of the problem and know that being red is too forgiven. So they are working on it. Thats all i can say as a fact.

AV is taking steady steps to improve this game.
Of course, I am not happy to get ganked without any hope of fighing back. There are times when it happens and you can't get away, like if you get ambushed in a dungeon. But that is part of the game as it is now. The parts that I like outweigh the parts that I don't like, so I still play.
One of the worst things to me, as a new player, was getting ganked by a player of my own race who was blue to me. I later saw that player again and he was still blue. You will catch up to even the macroers. Why? Diminishing returns are insane. By being a year ahead of you after you have been playing for 4-8 months, they will only be ahead by a little bit that is almost insignificant during battle. In the time that it takes for me to get 1 stat in STR by macroing (for example, I do not macro since I rerolled though), you would probably gain at least a few points by playing casually in that same amount of time because the dimishing returns are so extreme. It takes just a few months to get almost caught up but than it takes years to finish and actually cap everything but the difference of 8 months vs 16 months is very small for the most part and pretty much insignificant when it comes to down to it. Thats how this game works. After 6 months of playing you will see (if you last that long anyways) how much it slows down and how little the damage and mitigation difference is between you and someone playing since release.
: )

You hate losing everything? Just wait till you get to take everything from someone on your hate list! The extremes work both ways which makes the crappy days worth it.

They are looking to address the new player experience and the gap between newbies and vets. They are also looking at how being 'red' is too forgiving. They really do want to improve the new player experience.
The people who say, "Back in my day, we got ganked and we loved it!" are either in the minority or Adventurine realizes they need new blood in the game and are taking steps to make sure it happens.

True.
I remember when I was a new-new-noob (I'm still a noob), some person on my KOS list took my mount, which was really hard to come by at that time. Then he taunted me about it. I was mad, but I just learned to be more cautious.
It was sweet when some guys I was playing with caught him running into a wall somewhere and made him drown. Then they took the whole brand new set of scale that he crafted and was wearing (that was a serious set of armor to me at the time) and gave it to me. I loved wearing that dude's armor.
It was also good to have that feeling of people who have your back in a game where it matters (in the game).
They are looking to address the new player experience and the gap between newbies and vets. They are also looking at how being 'red' is too forgiving. They really do want to improve the new player experience.
I am very glad to hear this. But my main concern--and after all this time with only the most trivial of changes it seems more significant--is whether or not the devs have the skill to pull it off. I have serious doubts that they do. Sure, I'll take a look at DF in another year if it's still around. But do the AV devs do anything in a timely manner?

The devs do things in a manner suited to what is important and and what impacts the next phase.
In the beginning they focused on game stability and balance
When cheating became a problem for a short period they added automatic detection and retro-actively banned the cheaters
When adding content was too slow, they added a new "terrain system" so that new content and world building additions can be added more quickly.
When server issues popped up, they focused on resolving those issues, and delayed the pending expac to ensure that the release would not be plagued by hardwre issues on top of a new expac (which introduces possbile bugs).
This has been done with a very small team. From my point of view as a developer this looks quite competent and sane.
