Can you skip quests entirely and level from 1-80 (soon to be 85) simply by exploring and fighting the mobs that get in your way? CHECK
OK, this is where you get called out on your bullshit. There's now way to get to level 80 while just exploring. Maybe if you're spend time farming resource nodes, but if you just move through the zones, you just won't get enough experience, and that's with the experience bump they implemented.
Can you get to level 40, start a fletching shop out in the wilderness and sell your goods to players there?
Read the highlighted portion. It's not an empty world. Don't be in such a hurry to fire off a reply that you actually forget to completely read (and assimilate) the post you're replying to.
And if setting up a fletching shop in the wilderness is how you want to spend your time in a game, then go for it. WoW is not for you. I'd suggest a sandbox.
I am not sure if you don't understand what you wrote, or don't undestand that you're wrong, I guess it's the later.
If you simply move through level appropriate zones, killing the monsters that you see on your way, you will get stuck at around level 12. Without the quests there is not enough monster killing to advance levels quickly enough (not to mention that you have to do some quests for skills). Just think about it for a second... with the quests, when you move on to the next area you're level appropriate or with the exp boost maybe a single level higher than you need to be. And that is with going into the same area repeatedly to do two different quests, and the quest based experience rewards. Guess what happens if you don't got into that cave twice and kill all the monsters there and get two boosts to your EXP for completing quests....
I guess you were in too much of a hurry to fire off a reply without thinking. Is there some game mode where you can start off level one and wander around and get to level 80 without fighting any monsters of which only you're aware?
Not everyone is in a big hurry to get to the treadmill. He was simply stating that there are other options, I think. The idea that only .001% of the playerbase actually plays that way is somewhat irrelevant in my opinion.
When I say "quickly enough" I mean you will not earn enough experience. You wind up trying to fight level 32 monsters in the badlands as a level 25 character. You have to do quests, camp monsters, or walk in circles. Those are your options. If you go over the zones only one time, aka "exploring" you will be too low level to move onto the other zones. Like I said, try it, and see if I'm not right. I've tried it, so I know.
It's impossible for me to play WoW without feeling like I am being railroaded. It was a fun game the first time to level 60, but a bunch of new quests are for me, not going to change the game enough to make it enjoyable again. At some point I like to be able to do what I want to do, and WoW does not offer that. It's fine if I am not in their market, they certainly have a large enough market as it is, but the OP seemed to indicate that improving the depth of the quests is going to fix the game for those who don't care for it. That may work for a few, but in general his thought process was misguided.
Thats so strange....
I have a level 80 dwarf hunter, with his bear. Started him out with the idea of being the dwarf in the opening cinema. Skining and leatherworking. He has gone from level 1 all the way to 80 doing absolutely zero quests or dungeons (well only the ones required by class or craft). I did it on purpose. All he has done is hunt, skin, and craft. He only wears what he finds or makes from his hunting. Sure, it took years to do, and sure he has crap for gear score, but you know what...he did it all on his own. A true wilderness hunter, scruffy and about as well mannered as a badger having a bad day.
You can claim to know because you have tried it, but all you know is you gave up trying. It can be done, I know...because I did it.
Anyone can claim to be all big and bad, but not many can say they actually lived entirely off the land in WoW and survived it.
What happens if someone you are grouped with has not done that quest yet? Are you not allowed to help them? Oh wait who the hell groups in this game outside end-game raiding?
lol?
I tried wow, honestly, I liked it but due to being made redundant recently, had to cancel my subscription. During my first... 30 levels, whilst doing the random quests just as you go along, I had other people nearby, who offered to team up if I was on the same quest they were. This was happening a lot... so I don't know what you're on about to be honest...
Then you, Sir or Madam, do not understand phasing technology.
If you are on a quest that uses phasing, once you are done with it you cannot help anyone ELSE do that quest, or sometimes even quests in the AREA that quest was in.
He had a valid question.
WoW is more and more a single player RPG (lite) all the time. The only purpose other people serve (outside of raiding) is to make your game world LOOK more alive. Oh sure, some people group, but they're making it less and less necessary outside of instances and raiding. I guess some people like that though. To each their own. Nonetheless.....Palebane had a good question, you just didn't understand it.
Will it be so even after the 30th alt? I do not know, but there IS improvement and I will list it here:
1) There are way more way of levelling now. Each continent has its own path and you won't see even one continent while levelling up to 58-60. So with your alt you can pick another continent or even the pieces you did not check on the continent you already experienced.
2) The quests are not just different and engaging from a story point of view, they also have different mechanics, mostly done with the vehicle system introduced in WOTLK. While the story will become known to you, at least these mechanics WILL provide a break from using the same abilities and give you some variety.
In addition to this, phasing seems to have been changed somewhat in a way that it DOES NOT eliminate people from the picture. You can still see them. The only thing is you may be looking at different landscapes, but you can still see, chat, group and trade (or murder) them, no matter on what phase of the quest you are in.
Yes, the group part might be limited, but again, if you all start the quest together, there will be no problem whatsoever, not to speak that you can help your buddies in other way without needing to invalidate completely the content by getting there with your level 85 to kill Hogger again.
As for freedom, yes. The new quests are nice, but WoW is NOT a sandbox game, it is still WoW, what a surprise eh? Not really. I do not really know why people would think otherwise, this is not the NGE, not even close.
Do you really expect EVE to become a level based game every time they release an expansion too? no? so why WoW would change everything it has built its succes on? No reason, indeed.
There is a point though that here has not been mentioned. "Freedom". The add-on community is seldom mentioned but that IS a pretty big freedom WoW gives you and a very innovative features few remember to notice. Yes, there were mods and add on before WoW, but they were hacked on things without, for the most part, support from the developers themselves.
WoW has a whole Forum dedidcated to helping out modders do their thing and an official programming language (the LUA scripting language) to use in the add-on to guarantee compatibility.
Over the years, the add on community has thrived and now you can find all sorts of incredible add ons like Verisimilar for example that permit you to generate your own custom quests using the Game NPC if you so wish and they would not look any different from regular quests to people starting them with the client, how cool is that eh? And it also permits you to "GM" the scenario.
How many Theme park games have that? Is that made bu Blizzard. No, not directly at least, but without the support for it, it would not exist.
Verisimilar is not the only one out there, there are plenty of add ons for this, from Tongues, that permit you to speak in Demonic or other exotic languages, to GHI that permit you to create custom items that can even apply a buff visible to all with GHI to your character.
Have a nice day.

True that for almost every MMO(RPG) outthere. If you don't like the game quit, the problem are always people that don't like a game but continuing to play and screaming for more and more easymode.
Wow has always been the easiest MMO outthere, absolutely no need to dumb it down but Blizzard did so because of the minority 1 minate a day whiners using the forums.
From what I've seen read so far, they even streamlined quests by overusing vehicles and phasing. What if someone is in a different phase than you can you still help him?

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Scribs, I've highlighted in lovely lavender the part that you overlooked. I did the same thing as you, for the most part with my first WoW character, who was also a hunter (he was a miner/weaponsmith). But you did run around in circles hunting pelts at one point, whether you realized it or not.

Not to further highjack the topic, but Blizzard didn't not make the game easier because of complaints about the difficulty. They made it easier to make it "more accessible", i.e., to bring more people into the game. That may have chased away 15% of their players, but since it brought in another 50%, they think it was smart business (and are probably correct).
The point of this expansion is not to make new high level content for the playing base, it's to draw in new players, and re-invigorate the existing ones. They're trying to avoid the mistake that Sony made with Everquest - making the high level content seem unattainable for new players, who have to essentially solo through an empty world until they reach near max level.

Oh sure, I guess if you wander around aimlessly and never hunt anything then you could make the point you would never be able to level. But lets not be stupid shall we, if the hunter wants to eat each day he has to kill something doesnt he? If he wants to buy more ammunition/arrows, doesn't he need to collect things to barter at the trading post? Or are you implying that your correct simply because there is no way to level from 1 to 80 if all you do is walk from point A to point Z and never actually LIVE YOUR LIFE IN THE GAME!?!?!
And lets clarify shall we, I roleplay my characters. My dwarf hunter was a survivalist, not because it was the FOTM, but because he was an actual survialist. He lived off the land. And by live I do mean live. He got up every day and went out hunting for his food, for his skins, for his water to drink. He fed his pet with what he found off the animals he killed. I did NOT log in to run around in circles hunting pelts. People who do not role play thier character do that crap. I did what I envisioned my dwarf would do every day in his normal life as he lived off the land. There was no point when I played him that I thought 'if I just farm another 200 skins I can go to the AH and buy that cool new gun!".
So no, your point is entirely false, sorry. I played my dwarf from level 1 to level 80 as if each day I logged in was a day in his life of living off the land. He doesn't like people, he likes his bear and being alone. The only time he deals with people is when he has to to sell his furs and buy what he can't find or make on his own. And he sure never went out of his way to go help some poor sap who needs 10 whatever collected from those bad whatever they are thats picking on thier whatever and making them all upsetsy. City folk can do that if they want, keep them outta the trees like it should be.
Its a lost cause trying to get people on this site to give WoW a chance. Many of the frequent posters around here hate the game with a passion because it isn't like their favorite sandbox.
Too true. I used to be 'oh listen to these guys, they probably have some kind of point to give' but after sifting through thread after thread, I cant belive how much the game seems to be doing wrong for these guys, or why this and this is making th game horrible for them. I mean like wtf are you people doing in the bloody game to make it so bad, it just astounds me. I enjoy all MMOs I play because I adapt to find out how things work here and then enjoy it for its experience. Sigh, its just amazing.
I got the free 7 day reinvite. I logged in to find my pally had to totaly respec. Found a lot of changes that I did not like, was going to have to relearn my class all over again.
So I tried the new quests they were somewhat refreshing.
After 3 hours of game play I log back out. I did not use the 6.9 days left that they gave me to come back.

Well good for you. Happy to see it only took you 3 hours of your life that you cant get back on the so called new and imporved WoW.

I got a 7-day invite also to WotLK which I never played. But I always wanted to fly around and see Northrend and what it was like...I gotta say it was pretty cool and nice to look at all the new stuff. It did reinvigorate a sense of me that wants to play (although that's hindered by the part of me having no money). I also had a chance to explore a bunch of stuff after The Shattering which was a re-telling of my trip down memory-phasing lane...which also made me want to play. I did use a lot of the time...I even reconnected randomly with an old guildmate. The thing about WoW, to me, is this:
If you're going to have fun...real, honest fun...you need either your real friends in-game with you to just play around and do nothing/everything with, or a good amount of close internet/whatever friends that you really enjoy playing with. I mean I understand how some people love the roleplay aspect and can play alone, but if I ever do re-subscribe, I'd make sure I had 9 friends coming with me so we can play the game through and really just have a good time. To me, it's all about how you play the game, and who you play it with. That said, in that manner, I could have fun sitting around playing Scattergories or playing/doing anything as long as I'm with people I genuinely enjoy spending time with...For me, that's that. I've played some pretty bad MMO's and games because I had friends or family playing with me (Priston Tale, Wii Tanks...come on, EVERYTHING is fun!). That's how I do it.
As for the new quests, I did enjoy some. One of the first quests I did was riding in battle tanks to take on some undead/adominations...using a meat grinder, land mines, fireballs...come on, we all love killing 100 of them nasty undeads being summoned by a hologram of Kel'Thuzad. They're inventive and just plain fun. Do it, Blizzard!
Against my better judgement I resubbed to WoW to check out the new quests and I found nothing innovative or better. What i did find was that so far atleast from levels 1-18 they are all super easy, some quests have been been redone in a different way but bascially there has been nothing impressive about it. So if you see people flaunt how great the new quests are, take it with a grain of salt because it is far from epic.

Uhhh they are harder than the ones previously before and its a fact. They have made the mobs hit harder and the named ones are tougher than the ones previously. Its a fact they do bigger damage no use trying to deny it. The quests are epic and the stories and quest diversion is great. You never get bored because they always make sure your doing different types of quests and tasks all the time. Plus the mobs with red exclamation marks, plus the feature of getting new quests just by running around the world, plus as I found out today they add some pretty cool cutscenes that are story orintated. So if you see WoW haters hating how bad the new quests are take it with a grain of salt because they cant enjoy a good questing experience and their opinion is far from epic.
People just cant enjoy a MMO for what it is. I enjoy WoW for being WoW, Aion for being Aion, WAR for being WAR and I will enjoy Rift and GW2 for being Rift an GW2 but noooooo I honestly cannot grasp what goes on in the head of some players. Bloody hell is all I have to say. I'm just fed up with this kind of attitude in the MMO community.

Sorry, but everything I've experienced so far, using heirloom gear, is super easy mode; there is absolutely zero challenge, at least in the early levels.
People just cant enjoy a MMO for what it is.
MMO? MMO means "massively multiplayer" as in sharing the world with others. What is "MMO" about being isolated in an instanced or phased quest? More and more, this game is getting "single player" written all over it.

Glad you enjoy WOW, but realize that WOW is no longer WOW. This game is a far cry from the days of seeing many others running about and leveling, and having a chance to step in and help save some one who has taken on more than they can handle. Now the game is about following a breadcrumb trail, defeating all encounters in super easy mode, getting called a hero without being a hero, watching cutscenes, and generally playing out what has DEVOLVED into a single player RPG experience.
Game was great, ONCE. Sucks now. Sucks big time.
"Oh, I'm real. Real enough to defeat you! And I did it without your precious gifts, your oh-so-special powers. I'll give them heroics. I'll give them the most spectacular heroics the world has ever seen! And when I'm old and I've had my fun, I'll sell my inventions so that *everyone* can have powers. *Everyone* can be super! And when everyone's super.....[chuckles evilly].....no one will be."
Sad part is this quote is SOOOO true about what is happening with WoW.
A friend at work was telling me today about a quest he did in WoW where he was The Questgiver.
He accepted the quest, took two steps, mounted a horse and then waited. An NPC ran up to him and he gave the NPC a quest. Another NPC ran up to him and he gave the NPC a quest. A third NPC ran up to him and he gave the third NPC a quest. His quest was done, he dismounted, took two steps back and turned the quest in.
What the hell is better about that?!

So if you see WoW haters hating how bad the new quests are take it with a grain of salt because they cant enjoy a good questing experience and their opinion is far from epic.
OMFG LOL! I stopped reading after you said "using heirloom gear". Hmmmm lets have a think shall we. Heirloom gear is for max level players who have done the game fully without it....hmmmm, suppose god forbid there are new players without this gear which has vastly better stats and 20% exp gain that are doing the quests, lets have a think shall we who the quests and the whole bloody game is scaled for.

It's scaled for the very casual player and for the "not too skilled" player, and we all know. Without or without heirloom gear, WoW is one of the easiest MMOs out there (you can call it "accessible" instead if you will). Now that I think about it, it's the easiest I have ever tried, and my list is decent.
I got nothing against that, the same way I got nothing against WoW in general. But fanboys defending the game at all costs, even denying the obvious (WoW is a very easy game), makes me at least smile.

Thats great see I like you and your attitude. Read my previous post above about how I say that i I enjoy every MMO for what it is. I'm also sick of repeating the its hard its not hard argument over and over cause ugh in the end Ive tried and no one listens. I just dont like when false accusations are made and false statements about any MMO is made. I mean seriously its not fair on anyone. In the end it seems people on this site are majorly WoW opposed for whatever reason. I'll give up after this last thing.
Have you tried the hardest content in the game Lich King 25 heroic without no buff? Got a screenshot? Why not? I know some people will throw the argument uuuughhh scritpted encounters are not hard egggguuu then to those people why dont you have it? Its easy right? Also to all the arguments that WoW is easy why dont you have LK 25man Heroic without the buff and a screenshot to prove it? If WoW is so easy right you could do it this afternoon in under a hour. I mean you guys give the impression your so good and WoW is so braindead. Why not guys? It is the EASIEST game out there!
not going to bother reading 9 pages... just going to comment on the title you used...
if a person hates WoW... why should they try WoW's quests?? is that not like saying... if you dont want to get shot in the face and die, you should try shooting your self in the face first??
i hate WoW, simply because i find it lacking in what i enjoy in an MMO. but thats my tastes i tried vanilla WoW, i fail to see why i should try new quests when i have already decided years ago. i do not enjoy the game??
sooo again i fail to see why a hater needs to try WoW's new quests.. wouldnt that just give them something else to bitch about??
Got to ask myself if long time WoW players in this one spot on the internet feel that WoW is taking yet another turn for the worst with the expansion of CATA stating from most of you on this thread feel as well as do I feel that this game is now easy. So be it is now easy. So if this is the sentiment now with WoW here on this thread logically speaking it would seem that perhaps millions of other ppl across this planet who played WoW would also see it now as a easy MMO?? Hmmm interesting could this be the beginning of the downfall of Blizzards mighty giant?
I think the real question should be...were the quests ever hard...? Are quests supposed to be hard? Most are nostalgic. You participate in terrain phasing or the outcome of a battle and feel cool. Quests aren't meant to be hard, just diverse, interesting, and fun. If quests were hard, no one would do them, because quests are there for people to level...I don't understand the gripe. It makes no sense for a quest to be hard, it'd defy why you're doing it...to kill things for experience to get more experience. Quests were NEVER hard, unless they were bugged, like racing that general on a netherwing drake who always hit you off with bombs. In every MMO I've ever played I don't think I've ever said quests were hard, or even not easy...they're all almost usually easy. That's why raiding and other content exists, for that 'hard'/not-easy factor. Seriously, what the hell do you guys want from an MMO? I honestly can't believe someone would want hard quests, because I guarantee you'd be back on forums complaining how hard they are. Some people's mindsets are so ridiculous and off-topic. They do throw in hard or super-innovative quests sometimes, but if the majority or half or even 1/3 were HARD, questing would be stupid. Tell me how hard quests are appealing, please. And let me know of any MMO's you play now and thoroughly enjoy with all their quests being amazing and hard and appeal to your sense of questing.

You know, if someone really hates a game no quest no matter how good it is will make them change their mind.
Well, possibly if it is the quests that makes them hate the game but I don't think that is the most common problem here.
Someone who liked the game but got bored of the same old quests might come back.

I've found the new quest system very enjoyable.

I don't want WoW haters playing WoW with me, I'd rather they stay in their games. Already deal with enough whiners that like WoW, don't need a bunch of whiners that hate WoW too annoying me to death.
-I want a Platformer MMO
Wow has always been the easiest MMO outthere, absolutely no need to dumb it down but Blizzard did so because of the minority 1 minate a day whiners using the forums.
From what I've seen read so far, they even streamlined quests by overusing vehicles and phasing. What if someone is in a different phase than you can you still help him?
Starting to think WoW has become Blizzards testarea for their new announced game.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!
"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."
If wow is the easiest mmo on the market why would someone even need help while in a different phase?
