Of the titles I've played...EVE has the "best" pvp...but that all depends on which side of the battle you ended up on...:) It is also the most unforgiving pvp game out there as you can lose everything in one battle.
Warhammer Online, with their RvR, was a lot of fun...for a while. In the end, nothing too stellar.
Darkfall...lots of potential with this game and exciting pvp moments from time to time...that is...if you can find someone to fight. Hopefully Darkfall can keep progressing and bring back some of the excitement and enthusiasm that once surrounded it.
WOW. Just kidding;) Though, I have had some good times in that game..but I wouldn't say the pvp in WOW is fantastic.
I've had the most fun with EVE. If you can handle losing a ship that took you weeks to get into (and you will lose one or three sooner or later) take a shot at EVE. Large scale battles in EVE can be epic.
The PvP in EvE never appealed to me, I just don't like the style.. I'm trying the DarkFall trial and the game could be amazing if there were more large scale sieges instead of 5 second gank fights. Does anyone know any upcomming mmo's that look like they might be good?
I dont like eve either, its simply rock paper sciscors and no real action imho, u just press the weapons and watch the fireworks and if you have a wrong set up its just a waste of time since you know what will happen at the end...
Guild war seems to be very interesting but it isnt out yet
lineage 2 had fun pvp but not seriously balanced pvp
Have seen many ppl mentioned DAOC, havent tried though
From what i ve seen wow had the best fun pvp and the most competitive at least, the rest sux in wow imo
1st) Low graphics/short animations give it a smooth and responsive feel which is really important for competitive pvp
2nd)population makes it big enough to have big arena tournament comapred to mos mmorpg
3rd)world pvp from what i here is kinda dead, so i guess it would only be organised groups for lulz, and closed area pvp would be bigger
4th)not rock paper scissors mechanic intented(the reason 1v1 doesnt work 100% is because of balance issues and not because it was designed that way)
WW2 online and Pirates of the Burning sea can claim best RVR and PVP. Warhammer is ok, darkfall is ok, EvE is more about alliance wars then real small pvp. but POTBS before avatarcombat revamp was awesome. now WW2 online is the only 100% real pvp game out there.
Only DAOC has ever got it right with 3 factions and a exceptionally balanced game till TOA
RIFT has potential but again 2 factions and a very extensive class system that i predict is going to create mass balance issues and with the ability to change souls (classes) there will always be a large number of FOTM's
personally, i would have to say the best current pvp can be found in either EVE or DFO. although EVE has all the elements of a huge sandbox, and a truely staggering economy, its pvp is still kinda static in my opinion; click buttons and watch ship engage. DFO however is still not developed enough to have all the sandbox stuff but the combat is identical to an fps style game. ive played both for a while but have settled on DFO of late because i, personally, find it more immersive- the lack of an economy is wicked rough though.
regarding the grind in DFO, it is there, no doubt about it, but a mate and i created new toons two months ago and after casual play (20ish hours/week) we are already capable of defending ourselves (as a team) against single PKs. we're doing no macro'ing either btw, the skill gains in actually performing the task (ie pve combat) far outweigh what you can hope to get out of swimming against a wall all night. regarding population, im finding it increasingly difficult to get away from everybody else- my secret gathering and mob locations are becoming busy and im seeing people everywhere.
as far as what is upcoming, the reason we made new toons in DFO is because we are hoping for good things to come in DFO2010 which should launch, hopefully, in 2011- lol. even if it adds only a portion of what is promised though it will be a valuable expansion to the game adding what i consider more of the sandbox ingredients to the core. otherwise, gw2 looks really attractive- if you're willing to sit around until that shows up.
Nothing beats Lineage 2 when it comes to pvp. That game is only about pvp after all. It can handle massive battles and there are always enough players to make it possible. There are clan/alliance wars, castle sieges and random small pvp everywhere. There is a reason why it's one of the most popular mmos. Although I wouldn't suggest to play in official servers unless you want to play with only koreans and grind for all your life.
Don't listen to these peoples who suggest UO, Shadowbane, Daoc, darkfall and mortal online. Some of these games just look retarded and others are empty.
Vanilla WoW, I still haven't found a system that is more active than wow back then (within the confines of hotbars that is).
Upcoming, maybe RIFT, though they seem to be going for 'Warfronts' primarily, which is a form of battleground. Maybe GW2 but I'm not convinced by putting PvP almost entirely in something like "the mists".
Maybe TOR, we don't know much about their direction with PvP, only that they have both battlegrounds and open world, Mythic is working with them so they might come up with some objective based open world PvP although that is completely unsure.
Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!
i hear good things agout the pvp in perpetuum, but haven't treid it yet myself
also earthrise could be worth watching
bounty bay had quite decent scale pvp battles but haven't played in a while(they 'improved' the shop to bring it more inline with other f2p games so you may want to check up first if u decide to try)
I dislike PvP in general, so i'm not an expert, but EVE definitely has most meaningful and interesting PvP.
AoC certainly has A LOT of PvP and there are sieges and things. Like i said, getting randomly killed and spawn-camped by 20 morons for no reason isn't really my thing, but if you enjoy that type of thing, AoC will definitely hook you up.
I've also heard Darkfall is pretty hardcore in terms of PvP. Not played it though.

For current PvP, I'd have to go with EVE. Their mechanisms of balancing between pve and sector space of pvp for the risk/reward/and game-play value is great, imho. CCP has grown that business over 7-years with a consistent subscribership to rival most mmo's on the market today.
Near-future, upcomming, I'd say RIFT. Based on the reading I've done, the podcasts I've listened to, the information at my disposable to read and think about, this game, I anticipate, will have purposeful, meaningful, Massively-Multiplayer, community-influenced, cooperative and competitive, on-going dynamic, player-centric/pvp game-play that is simultaneously interlaced with pve influence or be worldly or factionally meaningful that transcends what I experienced in WoW or WAR. 2 factions, but we'll see.
The emphasis of pvevp game-play does not seem isolated to battlegrounds or redundant PQ's or scenarios, but perhaps really pushes that envelope of game-play design, mechanics, breadth and depth, and balance of pvevp, while being more about massively-multiplayer community involvement, rather than relying more on a heavily instanced 10 v 10 platform game-play. And I dont have to play a ship
What is the best PvP mmo out there or upcomming? Preferably large scale PvP.
Large scale PVP = EVE
Nothing else comes close. There are regular PVP battles with hundreds of players on each side. The battles rage across many stars systems at all times of day and night. None of them are hack-n-slash zergs. There is a lot of tactical preparation and plenty of options for players to be engage with different combat options.

I know it might be hard to believe but some people just don't like eve such as myself.
Look if you are looking for mass fun unbalanced pvp i would agree with the ugly cat.
Lineage 2 was one of the fun and action mmorpg pvp wise, there are large scale pvp wars like camping points with ur clan and challenging another clan. There are huge castle sieges, and there are always small group pvp. You ll surely have fun, but is not a game for serious pvp

most of the various Fantasy games that claim to be PVP focused, can't even support more than 50 combatants.. and even that many often creates serious lag, and for those that can't even handle that many.. meh.. waste of space.. and i include WOW in that category as regards PVP.. much as i like WOW .. the way it handles PVP is totally rubbish.. Few .. and very few at that.. games really handle PVP well.. most games do seem to cater to the carebear mentality...
All the people who say EvE are nuts. If hardcore means someone who has played the game for almost a decade basically autoatacking you and winning simply because of length of time playing the game. Then yeah, eve would be pretty hardcore.
Now if you mean attack anyone, any play anywhere. Lineage 2 is by far the game to beat for pvp. It simply cannot be beat. Watch for tera as an upcomming pvp mmo.

DAOC
Eve if you're some kind of -holic. Like spread sheetaholic or alcoholic.
I dont like eve either, its simply rock paper sciscors and no real action imho, u just press the weapons and watch the fireworks and if you have a wrong set up its just a waste of time since you know what will happen at the end...

UO til the trammel nerf.
Shadowbane if they didnt have macroing all day afk.
Darkfall if they make skill grind 100x faster, magic damage was set to about 1/2 and fixed some of the PVE so it wasnt so crazy.
Upcoming, good luck with that. Maybe Rift.
Overall, I would say Darkfall is the best, but still not working right. I would name EvE up there, but I dont like the ships idea behind it.

Ultima Online/Mortal Online/Eve Online - depending on what mood I'm in!

I agree that DAOC was the best Ive played. WAR is a solid choice for casual players. Darkfall is gank or be ganked.
I dont go for eve either.
Who knows what the future holds.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
Fun Casual PVP Warhammer hands down cant be beat fun as hell. but as with all one trick ponies you can get tired of it.
DAOC pretty good but dated.
Darkfall not a bad option either, just had 2 odd issues I didnt like that were completly an artistic disagreement so dont play.
Eve online for the most meaningful PVP, it may be slow at times but if your a corp your actually trying to forge an empire or destroy one.
Warhammer for casual pvp
Guild Wars for competitive pvp
As for upcoming? No clue at the moment, just have to wait and see how they pan out.
It seems like GW2 is the most PVP focused out of the upcoming titles. What's out? Probably Warhammer although I personally think it's bad.
He who keeps his cool best wins.
Warhammer

EVE is the only game I enjoy PvPing in anymore.
Most other MMOs have turned into instanced pvp matches and feel too much like your typical FPS (zero risk = zero reward).

I don't really like EVE either, but it doesn't change the fact that is has great PvP and probably best in genre large scale PvP.
