I got disappointed in SWTOR, graphics are ugly and pale, game mechanics rusty and gameplay is boring, only good thing about is Lore and Audio work.

GW2 is teh winner without second doubts.

GW2 will be fun and I will certainly buy it, but I have my doubts that a B2P model can provide much more than an "an the side" MMO.  It certainly looks to be fun, but with quick leveling and no subscription I don't think it will be on the same level as games that receive monthly support in terms of long term playability.

GW2's leveling curve flattens out, and while they're still tweaking it, one number that I've heard thrown out is 90 minutes per level (at the 53 minute+ mark of this video).  There are also 80 levels, so that could be 100 hours or more to level to cap.  I was searching for Rift hours to level and all I found was Scott casually throwing out 80 hours as a number.

As far as playability goes, GW2 has a system where if you go into a lower level zone, it automatically scales you down so that you can't grief other players by 1-shotting things.  Also, because there aren't quests, but rather events that run on cycles, these two things combined mean you can replay any content in the entire game and be an appopriate level while doing that at any time.  It's not like a traditional MMO where you do a really cool quest once and then you're done with it and have to reroll another toon just to see it again.

As far as support goes in a B2P model, GW1 is still running 5 years after the fact with no subscription, and they recently banned 3700 accounts for botting and exploits.  The support is still there.

I also look at it this way.  GW1 must have been profitable with no subscription fee, B2P expansions, and a vanity cash shop, otherwise GW2 wouldn't be coming out with exactly the same model.  If ArenaNet is proving they can make a profit and support a game with a B2P model, and provide hundreds of hours of content, I don't know why I would ever pay a subscription for another game ever again.

Guild Wars 2, no competition here.

Worst of the AAA crowd will undoubtedly be the Star Wars one due to over-hype, only so many ways you can package a game like this. It should have stuck with the client based star wars FPS style conquest games and not this blown up mess.

Terra will appeal to fans of anime and other cultural games. Fact is, even if they do anything to make it more western it still has the anime look and feel to it.

I predict WoW will lose 1/3 of it's subscriber base to Rifts, Guildwars 2, Terra, and the new Comic MMO.

I highly doubt that. that has been said many times yet it hasn't happened yet. Why? Because anyone can play wow.

Without a doubt in my mind; Guild Wars 2. And I wasn't even much of a fan of the original GW (For those who are keeping GW2 under their radar because of GW1, you really shouldn't).

The others I have looked into and are not too interested, although I do appreciate each games merits (TOR = Story, Tera = Combat, Rift = Dynamic content etc..). However, what makes GW2 interesting is that it seems to be a master of all trades rather than just one (It has great combat, personal storytelling and dynamic content).

It seems that at the moment all the developers seem to think MMOs all have to move in the same direction. Or at least that they all feel that they have to overhype upcoming games and market them towards what they think the younger generation of players want. Now, there is nothing wrong with that, business is business and you have to try and guess what the next generation of customers may want. I’m just not sure they (both the developers and the younger players themselves) really know what they want. A lot of younger players look forward to MMORPGs that are more like their current fast action console games, and there definitely should be some games that fit into that mould. But it would be a sad day when all the upcoming games are all like this and all the same, which seems to be where the current trend is heading.

Notice I mention the word hype, it’s because of the hype surrounding these games that is trying to encourage the type of player that I’m not that I doubt I’ll end up trying any of them. SWTOR and GW2 I may try after I hear from friends that play and if they like them it would help me get over my aversion to all the hype.

As there is no None of the Above option, it’s a tossup between SWTOR and GW2 and as SWTOR seems to be closer to the type of game I like I guess it gets the nod.

As above, I'd have to toss up between TOR and GW2.  As background, my favorite MMO of all time was pre-CU SWG, and I never played GW1.  That being said up front, I did a little rudimentary exploration of the two.  A couple of things stood out to me.

First and foremost, TOR will NOT be SWG2.  Too bad about that.  I was kinda hoping it would be.  In fact, it looks a lot like TOR will be NOTHING like the sandbox that was SWG and more like the standard directed-path MMOs we see today.  Which, actually, I would expect from anything LucasArts would touch today.  After what they did (along with SOE) to change our wonderful sandbox into a straight-line same-o' game, I don't expect they'd chance anything revolutionary again.  It's not in the corporate culture anymore.  And, like many above, if they're touting their voice acting as the most wonderful part of the game, I'd have some serious questions to be answered before spending any money on it, Bioware's rep aside.

Secondly, I think it might be wishful thinking to expect GW2 in 2011.  Judging by their website, I'd say sometime in 2012 would be a more realistic estimate of its release.  However, I AM quite interested to see how their dynamic events concept will work.  This COULD be an actual "new thing" for MMOs, and could substantially change the future.  Likewise, divorcing the personal storylines (for flair, deco, whatever) from the epic storylines (for gear, stuf, whatever) seems like a really good idea too.  And if they really CAN find a way to make thousands of players' individual choices affect the worldscape... well, that would be remarkable.  Again, I think it's a bit ambitious, but the genre has to evolve SOMEDAY, and why not now with GW2?

But the website admits there is a whole LOT of stuf left to do on the game.  They've still not even given us a glimpse of half the professions.  They've mentioned in passing "crafting" but give no indications at all of what that will be.  There's just a very very large part of GW2 still under development that I don't think we'll see it in 2011.

But, even so, my nod goes to GW2 for its potential of bringing something new to what has obviously become a seriously stalled genre.

Just like as u described it mate, something about Gw2 feels magical.

When i was watching the video i was feeling that i've been in a 3 dimension game.

ps:It reminded me sth from neverwinter but dont tell anyone,it's a secret.

I'll try every one on the list, but I have a special love for GW2, from the art style, to the playable Charr, to the promised dynamic events, and world lore. I even watched most of that 50 minute gameplay video which is a long time for me to sit in front of a game vid.

Rift: I participated in the past Beta this weekend and oh boy..... thats all i have to say. I have hit an mmo desert for about a year now and it seems i have hit an oasis. The Class system is taking what CO tried to do and perfected it. thats all i can say because of NDA :)

Took part in Rift Alpha+Beta and  it's just a disappointing snorefest, maybe it will get better as beta goes on, so far though I've lost interest.

Looking forward to Guild Wars 2, but I picked Tera because the Korean beta was awesome ^^

Star Wars: The Old Republic for me. It's high time for a new decent Star Wars game. I'm done with bad and barely improving games like SWG.

I am a fan of Bioware's games (ala Mass Effect etc) so by far the MMO I am looking forward to is SWToR.

I love pvp,so i will be playing TERA.

Finally a game with something new.

  • Matt165FMatt165F Member Posts: 1

GW2 seems to be the most hyped MMO. GW has a big fanbase and NCSoft is wel known in the MMO world. But all i see is a better GW1 with some improvements. It looks very good and will probably sell good. However it is my second choice because its still a typical MMORPG. They have some good ideas to improve the parts other MMO's failed on, but it isnt refreshing for me.

My vote goes to TERA Online. It is probably the most underestimated MMO. Developed by BlueHole Studio and westernized by Enmasse Entertainment. It has some sort of asian art style which doesn't appeal to everyone I think. However this game looks amazing and is promissing to be most innovative MMO made so far. Allot of people see it as an asian grinder, only because of the fact many korean MMO's have failed in the west. TERA is not a typical asian grinder and gives its players a choice between questing and grinding. It is possible to quest to the max level without having to grind.

The most exciting about TERA is its action combat. It has a free targeting system which means you can't click your target like every other MMORPG. Melee combat is like Vindictus but TERA has more than only instances. Ranged combat takes some skill to actually hit a moving target. Combat doesn't get boring fast, because every battle is different.

I think GW2 will win this award because they simply have more fans. EnMasse is a new company and not everybody have heard of them yet. It looks like TERA will release earlier than GW2. Both games look good and I will definitely try both. The other games don't intrest me much and some are overhyped.

In 2011 we will see the beginning of a whole new mmorpg:

    Guild Wars 2 by ArenaNet

If you are not voting for this, I whole-heartedly recommend you to read and view more about the game first.

It's just not fair for the rest, I know.  I'm sorry the others chose this year to release.

i disagree...gw2 will give em all a run but only because everyone has played the 1st one cause its free...i palyed the 1st only when it was cheap to buy and held my interest for maybe 2 weeks... the only reason it has such a following is because its a free mmo.... i have no interest in it what so ever... even after seeing video and everything about it.... Free play = everyone is interested = hype... but not me sir.. no... not me...

Why is there never a option for none of the above?

  • channel84channel84 Member UncommonPosts: 585

gw2 gets my vote due to obvious innovation to mmo genre gameplay.

original gw is not a game for everyone, i agree. level 20 max level, easily availability of max armor and weapon equate into zero grind for level and equipment. classes and skill depend solely on player's ability to think and analyze smartly and is rewarded for smart play instead of time+equip+lv = i pawned u. Heavy instancing imho is a great tool for the developer to tell their story about tyria.

As for TOR, i don't blindly hype a game due to it's ip and developer...kinda remind me of warhammer online. Great ip (warhammer ip is probably one of the best fanstasy ip out there) and very potential developer (creator of daoc, what more can you ask for). As for the potentially great storyline...original guild war have heavy story plot campaign gameplay and voice acted, the story is great and lengthy but as you can see from the mmo community great story+voice acting does not equal huge success like WoW.

My second choice would be RIFT due to it's great graphic, nice character progression system and world design. My only complain would be it's standard quest system thou i'm sure the dynamic rift system will spice things up.

Tera wise....i have nothing against the asia/anime theme but i would prefer they add more character customization to their female character as i seriously don't want to see all the female character being semi naked. As for the combat system thou i realize their innovation towards a more action oriented gameplay but i can't see myself enjoying it immensely, for me guild war 2 style roll to the side is my limit to action game base control in mmo. But i sincerely respect people who like tera for it's unique combat mechanic and is not shy to vote for it.

Sadly i'm not looking forward to DCUO mainly due to the fact that i'm not a DC comic fan or a fan of superhero mmo fan thus any opinion i give will be bias and irrelevant
