I also think rolling on a pvp server will increase longevity. Open pvp seems like it would be a blast. Only had a small taste of it on the pve server (after you finish a pvp instance you would be flagged still) due to a bug but the couple fights i had were fun even if i lost.
I am not completely sure, if something World of Warcraft has shown is that open pvp is a nice idea but that has many drawbacks like gankers and griefers. No wonder they change from a open pvp centric to a instanced(arenas, battlegrounds). I think Eve got a better system with police and other stuff to control the pvp.
Normally i'd agree but with such a massive open world and travel powers combined with ease of leveling to cap and a skill based combat system i think you will see less griefing/camping and more actually fighting. A good player can take down 2-3 bad players in DCUO (wish i was that good lol).
I plan to roll on both pvp and pve servers. Its easy enough to level even casuals can.

You might be right, but keep in mind that beta crowd is not necessarily a prediction of the actual release players. Anyway, time will say if my concerns were justified.

Ganking and Griefing will happen on any open world pvp server, the upside to this game is that lowbies won't just get wtfpwned by higher lvl players... at least not with impunity.
It's not an even level playing field, but I liken it to the pvp game in Global Agenda... As long as you can juke, you have a chance born of skill and not purely class and gear.

Yeah, have to say that actually impressed me a bit. I was level 12 and had a level 22 come by while I was fighting and get the jump on me. Of course he tried to click spam, I used my combo's and kept stunning him. After winning that one I got cocky and tried other higher level players ( I went hunting oO) and it turned out that even being significantly lower level than your opponent doesn't equal an auto loss.
To me thats pure win. Effective use of terrain, combo's, powers and your head over all are going to be what wins fights.
Zerging isn't the be all end all either. I've managed to take on 2-3 players at a time my level and higher and come out the victor. Not a cake walk but it's possible, that means win for me.
I'd agree with much of the OP. Game needs more polish mainly. My only worry is enough content to justify a sub. I can see people burning through it in a month or 2 easily..even casuals.
Then just play for 2 months... nothing written in the MMO handbook that you need to play for years, and if the devs havent given you reason to then thats their issue.
Actually, a short term no brainer action MMO might be just what I am looking for while other games get here... If the content then drops in like has been suggested it might even keep me.
The forst month alone is more then worth the box price on thse games, especially with so many other non MMO games hitting retail with 10-15 hours in them.

Oh i'll still be hunting do-gooders for a least a couple months since i am mmoless atm but i can see people plowing through content and saying i'm bored. If only you could macro a catchphrase like "It's Clobberin' Time!".....

You understand this is why DC will fail, right?
I agree the game is fun for a month, but its boring as hell not to long after. If people aren't sticking around then money isn't being made. There will be a lot of people playing at first because its DC, but its only causal popcorn fun. It isn't filling.
Good review. I would have rated the character creation lower, everyone having the same face? omg! but overall fair and balanced reporting.

Indeed. If the game is at least decently polished and fun, then that itself is worth buying the box for, seeing as 99% of MMOs over the last few years have managed neither of those things.
Giving it an 8/10 is too much. More like a 6 or 7/10.
My reason are as follows
(1) The compleetly broken uselss chat system. It is the worst part of the game.
(2) The UI, its bad. Moving things around is impossible. I like to be able to slot my abilities on how I play. You can not move your abilities around, not even if you re-spec they show up in the wrong order.
(3) Lets talk about combat. Yes its fast passed, based of the same type of system that the NGE used except better. My major problem with combat was really not killing stuff and getting turned right. My main problem is how noisy the game is. And getting the music sound right is almost impossible.
(4) Now lets talk about PVP, this is going to be a big part of the game. If you don't like pvp then your out of luck. PVP is the only way to get certain things in game. OK Lets talk about the hacks I have seen in PVP, the most used on is the flash attack having been killed by it several times.
Now that I covered the cons of the game. I will say what I do like
(1) Costumes
(2) powers/abilities
(4) Creating your character after well knows super hero's
(5) The quest system
(6) I also like the Que of for daily missions like area 51 and other things.
So I think soe did OK. I did not pre order the game to get the beta, I been in beta for a while now. I will say that I liked the game a lot, my wife however hated the combat said it was too fast for her. So if she will not play it I will not either. No reason to add extra games in the mix to make your wife mad at you.
On a side note if your a console type person your going to love this game, I personally hate console games, and that was the last indicator for me to not pre order the game.
I have a question about grouping for alerts/pvp/raids etc. If I was playing with 3-4 friends, could we queue as a group for a raid and have the remaining slots filled in by randoms? Same for pvp instances and alerts.
And whats the pvp set up, team size, game modes etc and is there any world pvp objectives on pvp servers?
good review, needless to say you got me excited about this game and before I hadn't even considered playing it. If the UI is the worst of the game, than I count that as a plus.
I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

I cant really comment as teams needed a lot of work before last patch and i haven't played since then but i'd imagine it works by filling up spots with randoms. There are lots of different sizes. Alerts are 4 man, raids 8 man, duos 2 man, then you have pvp instances of 5 or 8 man i think.
Not sure about objectives but there are boss mobs like Bizarro for heros to take down. You'll also find a lot of missions send heros and villians to the same spot. Say mobsters are hijacking weapons from the cops. Villians will help the mobsters while heros would help the cops. Plenty of opportunity for open world pvp action.

I'll try and address all the points I can across a few posts here. First this one.
1) Chat being broken is more recent as far as group / tells / league which was not prevalent at the time of this review. There are multiple problems with chat some of which I addressed in the review. The newest patch broke some of those aspects even more but you DO see that they are working on UI changes. Even though some of the stuff that was working before is broken now, its just the nature of Beta.
2) The UI is bad in some aspects, I touched on that as well, PC users do not get the full PC functionality, controller users for the most part have other problems with navigating menus and controller sensitivity. On the PS3 the controller issues are for the most part fixed, though the PS3 has other problems the PC doesn't have. I also noticed you said that you cannot move abilities around? You definitely can, you go to traits menu > loadouts. When you respec you have to reset the loadouts. Loadouts are based on roles, so powers could be in a different configuration for a tank role then when you are in your damage role.
3) Not sure you mean by not getting "turned right" but if you're talking about the newest patch where there are some MORE problems with targeting I can understand this. In the newest patch they mixed up targeting entirely, and the only way to really focus from one to the next is toy around with the auto lock or locking feature. You mainly see this problem on ranged characters, melee you don't have to worry so much. Some issues with sound included loops and dialogue not being in the game yet so they used placeholders, they fixed those in the last patch for the most part.
4) The flash attack is no more since the patch. Other hacks I've seen are few and far between, I've only seen one person use the speed hack after the patch.
5) Console play doesn't have much to do with it, its an Action game, Action PC games play exactly the same. If you like action games with a skill-based combat system and MMO style character progression then theres a good chance you'll like this game.

Mykell covered it pretty well.
You have groups of 4 and raids of 8 that you can create at any time in the open world. Alerts are 4 man alerts which is a full group.
Mykell covered duos and raids pretty well.
If you queue with 3-4 players the other slots will be filled by random players.
As for PvP setups, it depends on what you're doing. PvP arenas range from 4, 5 and 8 player arenas. Legends arenas are 2 and 4 players.
On top of the regular objectives for arena PvP or Legends PvP, you have feats which I mentioned in the review. The PvP feats are mini objectives for the personal player to accomplish, and these feats go towards your skill points. (the points you use to upgrade weapon skills and movement abilities). Some of these feats would be like, kill 5 players in a match without dying, or kill an enemy while they are fleeing (in movement mode.
PvP rewards are mainly PvP cash, but you also get other points required to purchase legends characters. So basically there are 3 different kinds of currency, 2 that you only get through PvP. So far PvP gear seems to be more geared towards the defense minded and less on utilizing roles, but that may change at end game.

Well I could never get my ui to move stuff around I will have to try what you said.
Now you comment on my targeting issue. Yes its huge if your playing ranged. I guess I should have use the word facing your target instaed of turned in the correct area. Now I found I actually like my batmain build better than my magic based build, so I think meele will be huge in this game if your looking at dps. I never did really figure out the roles between controller, healer, and dps. My batman build got a heck of a nice self heal that beat anything my ranged one did.
The flash attack has been fixed? Hm well I could have swore I had that used on me the other day, I have noticed a huge drop off on it so maybee its a different hack. At least you dont see folks zerging the respawn points like you do in a lot of other pvp stuff.
Honestly this is how it was for me on the pc, I would like to try it on my oldest childs ps3 to see if there is any difference. She actually asked me to get her the game, something totaly unexpected since shes a final fantisy person.
It is an action game and it is fast pased, I kind of liked it, but I will stand by how I saw it. I will say this it is a lot bettter than the other games in this catagory by a long shot. I would be playing it as a backup game if my wife would like it. But I find in my case a happle couple games together for happy times. I hate getting wife agro when im playing something she don't.

The UI definitely needs improvement, most users are used to clicking and dragging their powers to the desired spots, but now you have to go through a loadout menu and its kind of confusing. Alot of the / commands aren't in yet so for doing almost everything with groups or leagues you have to go through the social menu, which makes sense for the PS3 but I think they could revamp it.
It runs perfectly on the PS3 except the menu's lag a bit and the load times are terrible in comparison, but most PS3 only players won't notice it. I'm always willing to help anyone out in game if you have questions about whats going on, I usually play my main on the PvE server -- server 3. You'll see me around, my name is Deksam, just hit me up if you're having any questions.
As for your wife, I know the targeting needs to be fixed but I think if she's interested in playing something a little more laid back, I would have her try a rifle character, or something thats a little more simple to get the basics of to ween her into the action combat. For rifles you really only have 1 button to hit and a number of combinations with it. For the novice it will get the job done without being too confusing, and for the expert it can destroy other players and large mobs in a very short time.
Just throwing it out there, the combat is definitely not for everyone.
excellent review sums up my thoughts perfectly OP.
I really hope SOE take note of this type of feedback the social/chat systems are a broken convoluted mess and really detract from what is a excellent game.
Last post they made is they are working on the Social/Chat problems to be sorted out before launch along with the new content they're adding to endgame.
What wasn't really touched upon in the review is the grouping system that DCUO offers, which I think is important even though it isn't a top priority given you can solo to the max level.
I wouldn't give it an 8, maybe a 6/7 out of ten. It is beautiful however. Ultimately, unless they are holding a lot back for launch I'll probably give it a pass, wait the 6-8 months til they go F2P and play some then.
The Moving Finger writes, and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

Then im left to ask what is an 8?
As far as any Mmo titles out that dont include Wow...
As far as the genre of Mmo, even in beta this title is by far one of the best works we've seen as a community in a while. Simple Improvement.. in Ui and abit of targeting " i see it being more of a taste" Will make this game Marvelous. The release for this game is months away.....

That was a fair, good review.

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line,
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

Just curious I could be wrong but isn't DCUO still under NDA???
