Well, against my son's advice, I did not roll a new character in the Goblin area, but created a Tauren Warrior. (haven't played WOW in over 4 years)
Granted, I'm only at level 10, but so far the experience isn't all that different than when I left. Usual assortment of kill tasks and what not, though I do see the underlying theme or storyline they're trying to tie most of them to.
go to Azshara - now

I'm loving Cata. But the best MMO expansion? Nah. Mainly because, I've hit max level on my main, which is fine, but I'm back to square one in the gear/rep grind endgame which is a tad annoying. Sure, the rest of the game is great now, playing alts never better. But man oh man, the endgame still bites the big one. This is where WoW is different from the genre and where it's main weakness is. Other games give you housing and alternate advancement points and collections and social things to do. WoW doesn't.
I agree
I like WOW but I wish it has more to offer at level cap
For me as I'm playing through it more its certainly the weakest Warcraft expansion. I much prefered Mines of Moria TBC and WOTLK. I would say its better than the Guild Wars expansions and City of Villains . I've not actually played many game expansions other than that . Best ever mmo expansion imo would be the Burning Crusade . WoW was still on a high quality wise . The community was still great . There was a real sence of excitment which is missing to some degree this time around . It brought back huge numbers to the game where as with this expansion there is nowhere near the number of returning players and in game I'm hearing a lot of rumblings of disatisfaction as people are playing through the content .

To each his own I guess .
I know exactly what you mean when you say "a real sense of excitment which is missing to some degree this time around."
TBC was the FIRST expansion for WoW so people didn't know exactly what to expect and because of that, TBC news was EVERYWHERE. But the game is 6 years old and the feeling of "been there, done that" has set in, like all things.
Even the night before WOTLK came out, you could tell that the excitement, while still huge, was not as big as TBC's launch.
Far less people care about realm first raid kills, achievements, and top PVPers. Back in the day, every realm forum had a progression thread. Now, maybe half the realms do. But the population and community is still going strong. I guess the people that have stuck around are just enjoying the game for what it is rather then the accomplishments to be earned.

Never a truer word spoken . I returned knowing the game would not be as good as I remembered and it isn't but I am taking it for what it is now . Essentially a raid/instance/battleground centric mmo . It reminds me more of a mix of Warhammer and Guild Wars these days . The cross server looking for a group system is great on pve servers but should never have been applied to pvp ones . That was a huge mistake of epic proportions . I like WoW maybe for 3 months a year now and thats enough for me .The rest of the time I'm happy to play free to play games untill something new and shiney is released and catches my eye. Once it does I doubt I will be back .Heres hoping for the new batch next year .
I personally feel that Blizzard have come to rely on the formula of "resetting" the game with expansion to a degree where it is getting boring now. Whilst I can certainly understand the need to keep players motivated, this has generally come at a cost to the rest of their experiences prior. It's not a formula that they are likely to shy away from in the future, but I personally feel that they would do well to actually expand the variety of content in the game, rather than expanding the game itself, but sticking to the same content offering year on year.
I personally think that what World of Warcraft does right now is better than any other game on the market. Sadly however I think this has come at a cost, and that cost is a severe lack of depth where content is concerned. And whilst other MMOs are working to expand not only the existing content they offer, they are also looking at new content offerings all of the time. I mean, I think that while World of Warcraft is a better game generally than a lot of its peers, it's content offering is not comparable to that of games like Lord of the Rings Online, EverQuest 2 and Guild Wars.
In my opinion it's high time that Blizzard started looking at more player-driven content. Things like player housing and guild halls are leaving a massive gap in the game that, whilst some don't consider empty missing, lots do. A dye system for gear isn't hard to implement, for example, and allows far more in the way customisation. At the moment, everyone looks the same but with a simple customisation system like this, players would be able to define themselves, even if it is in a highly rudimentary sense.
It's this sort of thing that is likely to drive people into the arms of the new generation of MMOs. I've not played the SWTOR beta, but I am familiar with people that have, and have seen it being played on numerous ocassions. From what I can tell it has exactly the same level of polish and attention to detail when it comes to making sure it all works, but has a far greater scope and depth than World of Warcraft. I mean, it's all there - crafting, questing, grinding, instances, group content, solo and group PvP, etc - and is as good (if not better) than the equivalent content being offered by Blizzard. But on top of that there are things like player housing in the form of ships that just add that little extra that I'd like to see in WoW.
WoW is not a bad game. It's just an exercise of well delivered and perfectly polished mediocrity. I think reviewers are going to look at Cataclysm and go, "WoW is awesome. 9/10." Sadly however their opinion is missing one fundamental element and that is that beyond the polish, beyond the well structured content, the game is merely a mess of grinding and delivery quests, a formula that has been used for 6 years now and is getting tired and boring. If you compare where WoW is at in terms of evolution to games like EQ2, LotRo and Eve, it is archaic, bloated, and shallow. It needs NEW content, not new-old content.
Best description yet. Well written and objective. Not spewing banalities but pointing out strengths and weaknesses. THIS is the post Blizzard needs to read and the post "haters" need to learn from. Well done, Infallible.
I heard it's the best expansion even though they decided to cut out the whole sandbox route in the new areas to put a linear long quest chain filled with bugs and glitches.
I heard that these are the best things they ever did even though some of the quests they didn't even bother to spawn the objectives making the quest a dead end right there.
Apparently the high volumes of tickets they are getting are just tickets saying how great Cataclysm is.
i ;ogged in and tried my best to see a refreshing new experience and I didn't. I've had more graphically ooh experiences playing free realms than I did in cataclysm. The grind it right up front, kill 6 wolves, speak to npc z. It's changed nothing. All it did was usurp publicity from other more deserving games in time for holiday spending.
Not for me. Eve onlines Apocrypha was my favorite expansion. It was fucking flawless, Cataclysm is a combo of quest hub revamps, dumbing down of classes and attributes along with 5 levels of new content. It's nothing special. If anything both TBC and WotLK offered more leveling and endgame content for existing players (not rerollers).
I haven't enjoyed WoW this much since Vanilla WoW! They also did a great job revamping old dungeons to be much quicker than they were in the past! Very cool and I'm glad to have something I enjoy since FFXIV was such a huge failure (for me personally...others may enjoy it).
Blizzard did a good job! I am enjoying running through the old world on a new lowbie and experiencing the new content...and the 80 - 85 content so far has been really good as well. I had a lot of fun in Vash'nir
Currently Playing: FFXIV:ARR Looking Forward to: Wildstar

The day you find a themepark MMO where you don't have to talk to a NPC and do numerous 'kill x' quests you can come back here and complain. I suggest stop playing this genre all together because SWTOR, GW2, TERA, Rift all are going to have these quests.
I don't know what kind of refreshing experince you were looking for but to complain about' kill quests' in quest based MMORPG is very silly.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

eve online does the best fix's/expansions hands down. WoW's day are numbered. More and more i see WoW player turning against their very own beloved gamed. 1 specific reason....WoW is out played n getting to the time of its life where it is like a bad re-run on tv. few new mmo's coming out will finally refresh the mmo world. May not kill WoW but we dont want all the 17 and under kids on the new inovative mmo's coming out. So personally i hope all the kiddies stay on wow. ill enjoy my fallen earth/eve online and soon to be Rifts-Gw2 hell mb even tor if i hear its good and mb even tera. but ive read froma bunch of mmo sights n looks like most players were dissappointed with their new expansion. all i hear is WoW has the most money so itll win no matter wat. Well let me ask you this...if wow has So much money and such great dev's then how come all they could provide is a less then a months worth of content when several other mmo's made content that goes above n way beyond that. with smaller wallets also.

Here we go with this nonsense again. Who the f*** told you that only kiddies play WOW? from where do you get this info really? i have seen more raging teengares in EVE Online and so called mature MMOS. Stop generalising please. People from all walk of the life play WOW just not kids.

I am over 50 years old and the guild I belonged to in WoW was filled with working and married people. Where do people get these stupid "only kids play WoW" rubbish. They probably try to convince themselves that only kids play it to make themselves feel superior. Honestly when you do not even play it how would you know anything about the player base or what percentage of kids are on it. I have come across many adults too who behave immaturely in WoW and other games. Behaving childishly has nothing to do with age by the way. What is point really after reading that post why do I even bother. Probably fall on deaf ears.

I've played WoW on and off for years . I like yourself am one of the older players . I would say a few years ago there were a lot more of us than there are now . The demographic is a lot younger these days and the game is definatly being pushed to be more kiddie friendly . The guild I'm in ranges from 24-47 years of age( I've been with them for several years now) . Most of us are disapointed with the way the game has gone in recent years and feel that Cataclysm isn't as good as we had hoped in terms of challenge being injected into the game . We are looking at maybe moving to one of the new mmos next year should any offer some degree of challenge and playability also recently we started up a lotro kinship and many of us are enjoying that over WoW these days .

When you play MMO for this long its simple case of burn out. My whole guild migrated to WOW from LOTR last month. This is very natural and happens all the time. And once they burn out on WOW they will migate to some other MMO in few years. Doesn't mean the MMO sucks or is bad. Everyone is entitled to fresh and new things, change is good.

I personally feel that the entire kids play WoW comes from the days right fter launch. I can't prove it, and doubt there were ever any demographics on it, but half of the guild I was in bought new computers and moved to EQ2, the other half went to WoW because they didn't want to upgrade their rigs to play WoW. After 2 or 3 months almost everyone that started WoW bought new rigs and came t lo EQ2. Why you ask? Because they stated the vast majority of the players were teenagers and they couldn't stand the immature community. How did they know the players were actually teens? They didn't, but that stigma has remained. I don't play it now, and I didn't for very long, but when I did, it felt that there were a lot of immature peeps playing.
If you like the game, then by all means play and enjoy, and don't let what others say bother you.
Never was a WoW fan, but I still find myself amazed at the Ruins of Kunark expansion for EQ.. Instead of re-creating the old world however, it created a new landmass. It gave a new playable race and had tons of new zones. The feel of this zone was completely different than that of the mainland. it had a level cap increase.. It was preceded by many in game events and lore.
This is back whe Verant was at the helm.. It was a good mmo expansion..

How about just saying defeat the bandit leader instead of getting a quest to kill 15 bandits.. then go back and get another to kill the leader... its stupid, because most likely you have to kill 15 bandits before you can even get close to the leader. Now I understand kill quests are needed to make sure people dont skip straight to the main objectives in populated areas, due to other players having cleared the area. But the problem still exists and if no one complains about it, it won't change. You're making it sound like most people play MMO's 'because' of the kill quests.. which i doubt.
I don't suffer from insanity, I enjoy every minute of it.

No people play MMOS for quests which is a good alternative for senseless grinding on mobs. Yes questing is grinding in itself but atleast masks the grind. 'Kill quests' is staple of MMOS and complaining won't make them go away. if it was true they would be gone by now. How many variety of quests you can get? 'delivery fed ex quests', 'escort/save quests', 'collect x/scan x quests', 'defend Y quests'..... sorry but these are our options and they don't look any different then 'kill X quests'.
Even so called innovative and different MMO Fallen Earth is full of these typical MMO quests. So why focus only on WOW?

Not really none of us apart from maybe the guild master has played for five years full on .I've proberbly played around half of that time total .Also many of us would be happy to have stayed after CATA because it was ment to offer some return to the level of difficulty of the past . Had WoW not brought in all the streamlined (being nice there )gameplay most of us would have been more than happy to stay in it for another 5 years . We just feel that Blizzard has lost the plot now . I will admit there is some degree of familiarity but had that been coupled with challenging gameplay it would'nt have mattered one iota . It is there still but WoW these days is 95 casual and 5 percent hardcore . At the end of the day thats not really enough for most mature gamers . I did'nt say it sucks or did i mean to imply that it does , what I said is that the game is being aimed more and more and a younger audiance . Theres nothing wrong in that , kiddies subs cost as much as adult and its maybe a wise decision on the part of Blizzard to do so . But lets not kid ourselves this game is like the Rolling Stones who where a once great group but now a parody of what they once were . They still manage a great song now and then though.

I disagree because most of mature players i know have too many responsibilities in life to even bother with hardcore aspect of any MMO not just WOW.

I'm not a hardcore gamer myself I spend maybe 1-2 hours average a day in an mmo and maybe a little more at the weekend . All I ask for is some degree of difficutly maybe mediumcore you would call it . I don't want to go into a low or midlevel instance and find it a cakewalk . Theres zero fun in that . Mind you I don't think I'm speaking for just adults there also people in there early to mid teens having seen my friends children play on hard mode single player games on the xbox. But you see I'm not one of those of the mentality that an mmo is one mad rush for maximun level .I enjoy the experiance and challenge of getting there as well . If its too easy its boring and theres no sence of achievment .

What other deserving games is it taking publicity from? I seriously would love to know this as I've played every MMO out there and nothing else is this FUN and accessible.

Best description yet. Well written and objective. Not spewing banalities but pointing out strengths and weaknesses. THIS is the post Blizzard needs to read and the post "haters" need to learn from. Well done, Infallible.
Ohay, I heard Cataclysm is the best expansion.
All it did was usurp publicity from other more deserving games in time for holiday spending.
so say we all
At first I was going to buy it but after reading this whole thread I think I will give it a miss.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
I haven't enjoyed WoW this much since Vanilla WoW! They also did a great job revamping old dungeons to be much quicker than they were in the past! Very cool and I'm glad to have something I enjoy since FFXIV was such a huge failure (for me personally...others may enjoy it).
Blizzard did a good job! I am enjoying running through the old world on a new lowbie and experiencing the new content...and the 80 - 85 content so far has been really good as well. I had a lot of fun in Vash'nir
Currently Playing: FFXIV:ARR
Looking Forward to: Wildstar
The day you find a themepark MMO where you don't have to talk to a NPC and do numerous 'kill x' quests you can come back here and complain. I suggest stop playing this genre all together because SWTOR, GW2, TERA, Rift all are going to have these quests.
I don't know what kind of refreshing experince you were looking for but to complain about' kill quests' in quest based MMORPG is very silly.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
eve online does the best fix's/expansions hands down.

Bite Me
I personally feel that the entire kids play WoW comes from the days right fter launch.
The best ever huh?
Bite Me
Not really none of us apart from maybe the guild master has played for five years full on .I've proberbly played around half of that time total .Also many of us would be happy to have stayed after CATA because it was ment to offer some return to the level of difficulty of the past .
Bite Me
I'm not a hardcore gamer myself I spend maybe 1-2 hours average a day in an mmo and maybe a little more at the weekend .
