I find the play-style bland (typical MMO but not captivating at all from the outset) but most shockingly the quality of the graphics is terrible, it looks like something from 2005 even with every setting cranked to max on my reasonably decent PC.
I'd put the graphics quality on about par with RoM, close up some of the player models look OK (just OK) but overall it cannot hold a candle to the likes of games like Aion or even games like CODMW:2 for example. I even prefer the art style of WoW with the recent texture resolution update. AAA+ game this is not.
No doubt the game will appeal to some, certainly the beta is filled with people who are loving it but my advice is to try before you buy with this one. Definitely a thumbs down to the OP from my experience.
Also, I'd like to add my support to the lack of communication from Trion with its player base. Experienced this first hand sadly.
Seriously? I think Rift is the mmo with best graphics after FFXIV and AoC.
The forest looks beautiful, the shadows in the armors...the graphics are top notch.
I think Rift, Tera, GW2, SWTOR, and Earthrise will be the best games in their respective sub-markets to the audience they are developed for.
That's kind of a silly statement. You could say the same about ANY game.
[snip]
See where i'm going? There's absolutely nothing rift is doing that other games haven't done.
heh. Not silly, but intentional. Just as EQ took from UO and made improvements, amalgamation additives, WoW took from UO, EQ, Asherons Call, FFXI, and so will Rift and other games take from their predecessors and hopefully be additive amalgamations to some degree or another, and/or take their own spin on features, as they are. Each will have some uniquely different mechanics and style.
I have followed Rift for a long while now and seen it grow and the name change and the beta offers. The game NDA finally dropped and I was able to see by watching players in-game via live feed.
It reminded me of World of Warcraft but the graphic user interface seemed more mature, the graphics seemed more mature, even the characters and storylines seemed more mature. This game is a grown-ups version of WoW with a bunch of stuff that worked from other games. The guy I watched today had already played one style and today started a new style and played it for about 6 hours strait and had a ton of fun with it.
I do believe this game is the future of Pay to Play gaming for the older, more seasoned crowd of gamers that expect a game to be polished and finished and content rich upon launch.
Also this game has a huge amount of potential for expansions in the future. I can already see that an expansion would be a great thing in about a year or year and a half doing what EQ and WoW did ......raising the character cap and adding new lands or continents or something similar.
I respect the work Trion put into making the game. But you know, as a gamer I am almost insulted by the obvious amounts of copypasta going on here. Yeah, we know all MMOs out there borrow from one another and that's fine. But it doesn't feel like Trion borrowed said systems because they made sense in Rift. How can I explain this...ok it feels to me that they purposely put certain systems/funtionality/mechanics in the game in an effort to COPY the MMO you are currently playing (whether that be WoW, LoTRO, Aion, etc) uh...for the sake of copying it. Kind of building on the familiarity aspect. I don't know, it doesn't feel like 'Rift', it doesn't feel like it has its own identity.
It's like an MMO Frankenstein, made of all the parts, systems, and functions of all the other MMOs out there (including the AB Normal brain ;>) but without a soul of its own.
And the weirdest part is that after playing in all 3 Beta events I still feel as if the copying is truly intentional as a method to get current subscribers to make the transition over to Rift without a huge culture shock. But it doesn't work for me, it seems transparent and sometimes forced.
It seems like you should be able to take the best of everything and mix it together and voila! Success. But some times in art, music, and yes even games there's that bit of magic...that uniqueness and charm that draws you in. To me, Rift lacks the magic.
Im enjoying Rift quite a bit its alot of fun it is a mish mash of all the mmo things we know love or hate but they were up front about that and realy at the end of the day the game if fun and all in all thats whats its about no?
The game looks average, not better, not worse then what we have seen before. I liked some of the screenshots, and gameplay commentary seen on youtube, but lets just say this won't be a first day buy for me. I thought the same of Aion and FFXIV only to be let down.
What's taken my interest the most is the choice in how you play your character, having lots of different class options just adds replay value, but will there be a balance concern, that's the issue. I can see people figuring out very strong builds, and everyone just copying whatever will be imbalanced.
People calling the game Warhammer clone, WoW clone, how is this a bad thing? It uses features that worked in other MMO's and puts their own spin on it, that is what development is. Call of duty copied Medal of Honor elements, Saints row copied Grand Theft Auto elements, alot of games copied God of war, which probably copied something elses model. I see no problems with this if the development team delivers a shiny new product using past models that worked.
I'll be waiting for a trial key for this game before I consider buying it. I've used enough money on MMO's to learn not to buy from the first day.
Once novelty of the rifts wears down...all you got left is glorified WAR clone.
Bingo You've hit the nail on the head.
You ignore the fact that the rifts are an absolute riot
With the exception being that the first time you ran a PQ it was a riot.. The 100th time it was just plain mind numbing boring. The first and even 10th time you did a castle seige in Aion was a solid blast. The 100th or 1000th time you did it? mind numbing and made you not ever want to do another one.
Yeah Rifts can be fun.. The first 20-30times you do them. But after that you see how they play out and the mass of people clubbing into it only makes it purely a zerg fest and then it ends. It's just a PQ that happens to change every so often. How long is that really gonig to remain fun for you?
7. And thats a good thing ? why do you bother playing MMO's ?
Pretty sure he means he doesn't like to be doing something else in game like farming, exploring or questing and someone comes by in a zerg and kills him gank style for giggles, when he's not in the mood for PvP, then teabags his corpse.
And he probably likes doing quests with people in game but just not all the time as a requirement because they are all setup as group material requiring uber gear checks, long lines and wait times and jerkos who don't know how to play as a group.
Or he may be forced to group with people who are doing quests who just say "GOGOGOGOGOGOGO!" when he's actually trying to read the lore in the quest instead of clicking thru and rushing to the next part.
Least that's what I got from what he was saying as possibilites, but I could be wrong.
I've just read on the beta forums the term "Wowhammer" and the more I play the more I'm starting to agree, though still a bit harsh.
I actually could play a game right now that's not quite as good as WoW, but better than Warhammer so this isn't a bad combo imo. As long as they took the better things that made them both work which it is appearing they did.
They beefed up the graphics (WoW) and made PQs much more accessible and with an actual purpose that dictates changes in the world and not just loot drops FFA's (Warhammer). More choices for character development is a huge plus (WoW and Warhammer).
Well i had 2 days on it, Ill basically say i dont need any more, out the block " kill 10 of these, come back" repeat repeat repeat, oh and if you have a pet obviously follow means it chews on your own ass.Graphic wise im am on a x6 Phenom II with a AMD 5870 on Ultra settings and its no better looking than LOTRO actually probs even worse, hail the day some arab buys Vanguard like they do football teams and invests in a game that actually looks cool and plays well. Not cartoony? lol yeah right run of the mill same old same old, yes it has aspects that are different but tbh nothing new to see here, move along.

I'd really consider playing then as the game has so many things in already. It has Quests, random Rifts, full scale invasions, footholds, collection system (like EQ2), Crafting (with a crafting badge system for high quality recipes) Raids (World & Instanced), PVP (there's PVP quests on the PvE servers), Factions (you can buy tickets to set of a lvl50 raid rift, six different ones, one from each faction) Achievements, the soul system will give you tons to think about (different builds for different activities, PVP, raiding, soloing etc...), you can gear up through questing and rifting (from the planar sellers) and raids look like they use the badge system from WoW to get top gear. The graphics for me are great but there is no AA at the moment and I think that is intentional unless its just me.
This is what the game has going for it it is polished and fully featured so when it releases there is loads to do and the dev's can work on improving the game rather than spend 6 months fixing the game like Vanguard, AOC, Warhammer, POTBS etc.... I haven't played a game with so much in at launch and why I said in my post about playing more to decide, because the more I play the more I'm impressed with Rift. Also that quote really should be WowEQ2LotRoVanguardHammer I'm reminded of all these games so hopeful it will break away from that and forge its own identity in time and become a bit more challenging, though supposedly the devs have said the xp curve is fast for beta.

If it wasn t so clucky, and I actually felt like logging in, then maybe it would be one of the better on the market. For me, it s not even close. I can t put a finger on it, except it feels like Im playing Allods when I fight

This is what happens when i take a screenshot

Did you try it in windowed mode?
Currently playing: EverQuest
Waiting for Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen
You got trolled.

Ok,not 2 at lvl 20 :P but the mage and the cleric will be 20 tomorrow.
Lotro,lol.
I'm sorry, but that's neither a good thing to say about Rift, nor a good thing to say about the market. :P
Bingo You've hit the nail on the head.

Oooh, sorry, gonna have to disagree with you OP.

I agree with this.
I had more fun lvling a character to 14 rift hunting than doing quests.
And you can buy a lot of cool items, armors, weapons and stat changes from the planar goods npc.

I would only try to compare DCUO to CO or CoH or something action based.
Putting DCUO up against a real MMO is only going to get it bodyslammed in the long run.
"TO MICHAEL!"
