The point I'm trying to drive home here is that the PVE content absolutely brilliant in this game and if PVE is your thing, then I wouldn't skip over this game.  If nothing else, go do amphitheatre of karutonia... it's one of the most memorable dungeons I've ever encountered.

Very much agree, and especially with the parts up there. AoK is maybe the best one I've played among mmos... And not only the dungeon itself, the lead-up storyline too.

I loved and still love this game, but reason i no longer play it using your multi-choice, was the sour taste left from launch

I was there on day 1, I remember the pain of trying to level through the fields of dead (i think thats the area) where if you get 5fps you were lucky, The disatrous memory leak.

The lack of content at launch at higher levels, Having to seriously grind as no quests for the last 5 levels of the game.

But on the flip side, and this is why even to this day i still go back occasionally, It is THE MOST beatufully lansdcapped MMO, the combat is fun, the story is great if you dont mind a bit of cheese.

However, once they went to F2P the game changed, as previous posters put a lot of stuff is behind a paywall that stops it EVER becomming what it should

This game could of been as big as WoW if it had released properly, if you want the modern day comparison then look no further than FF14 - People dont forget what goes wrong at launch even after 5-10 years.

This post is all my opinion, but I welcome debate on anything i have put, however, personal slander / name calling belongs in game where of course you're welcome to call me names im often found lounging about in EvE online.

I played at launch and my issues were as follows:

    Great graphics

    Fun combat (for melee anyway)

    Boring quests

    Grindy

    No visual armor progression

    Bland story

Poorly put together everything. The bank/auction house and so many UI elements were just a pain

    Bugs, bugs, bugs

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

Wow. This is a fantastically old thread. Weird that it's still kind of relevant.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

  • RudyRaccoonRudyRaccoon Member UncommonPosts: 475

For me, it was a very glitchy game, I once tried it out as a Demon caster class whatever it was called and I came to this one part of the game where my spell attacks were doing absolutely no damage to these mobs and they were only a group of level 5's...

    Oh my, the horror. :(

I'll play it again when they let me play the copy of RotGS which I paid for yet cannot play as a part of the poor F2P system they have. It is a good game but they limted the F2P too much for the people who payed for and played the game when it wasn't doing well.

If you really believe that the first 19 pages of this thread are still relevant then you are simply ignorant.

Sure, it's not the best MMO ever made, but hey, not everyone can make an EVE Online.

It's such a different game from when this thread was started that you'd hardly recognize it.

EDIT:  Blah blah blah, rabblerabblerabble  Free to play doesn't give me the entire experience for no price tag whatsoever.... blah blah rabblerabble.  Get  a damn job.

    Bottom line.

The game is boring. I played at launch for 6 months. Tried coming back about 1 year ago and it lasted about 3 weeks. I got bored. 2 weeks ago I tried to come back again, and it lasted 1 week.

    The game is booooooooooooring.

    That is all

There were many issues regarding which players complained about in my last guild and why they left..... the two top being..

1;) Funcom's sub model (many players believe its not worth 15 bucks a month) F2P model is quite restrictive too.

2;) Difficulty in finding players for group content (in all level ranges) and lack of any dungeon finder.

These two complaints i have heard many many many times. And Funcom hasn't done anything to fix it eventhough they had no problem making TSW B2P and also provided players with a dungeon finder.

With me and mmorpg's, they only get 1 chance to get me hooked. If that doesn't happen within my first 30 days, I move on and never look back.

I'm just tired of mmorpg mediocrity and won't put up with it.

I don't think you are being a cad here when you mention breasts as a selling point for the game. In short, the nudity fits the tone and theme of the series as it did with the books. I think the point you are trying to gear towards is that the game is a more a mature based game. Which, I do like but for an MMO such a niche always harms it in the long run, same with TSW, the niche harms what I would consider to be a great game and story telling experience.

But I shall tell you the reason behind why I do not play as Age of Conan is a game that I actually bought a whole brand new PC to play it on when it initially came out. You see, I got into the Beta and I loved the game and all of Tortage which was the limit for the beta admission at that time. In honest, this was some bad form by Funcom as I think this experience mis-sold the game to a lot of players because the content in Tortage was not presented within the content of the game.

When Age of Conan came out, the game was absolutely a delight all the way through Tortage, there was some niggle, and some bugs but just one of those things you expect with a new game, right? No, wrong!

You see, what you got from Tortage was a fully voiced, cleaned up regular content and questing. A good experience across the board. Then when you left, this dropped so badly in the quality.

    1) Full voice acting stopped. Now not an issue per se, but this was handled badly due to the expectation it set. You see, you went from a fully voiced environment to nothing at all. They would of been better either leaving the game with no voice acting or only having major characters having spoken word. The expectation they set left a sour note on me and many people.

    2) Quests sort of just vanished, you did the game and the next zone, for me I think the place was called Conarch ot something like that. Was fine enough with massive amounts of bugs and crashes and breaks in the graphics and scripting. Once I got passed that it was near barren wasteland. Vast zones left open ended with no questing to be had, a sort of template for 'coming soon' kinda markers.

    3) The game, was going to be great but it was rushed out the door, either forced or out of money and what they delivered was a very broken gaming experience. It was shocking. So I left.

So, like you say they improved the game, fixed a load of things and added more quests to fill in all the blanks that they left. Well, I went to try out their free trial to see if I would like it. Now, I wanted to play an Archer.. of course that class was LOCKED I couldn't even play my end game Archer without going premium. So, in short I would have to pay to unlock my character in order to play. Now considering I wanted to play a ranged class I didn't want to have to do it all again. So, I took a drastic measure, I deleted my high end Archer (under the impression I would not know how to play it any more) and made a different class.

I played for all of 15 mins and I found my bag was full after killed perhaps 12 mobs, with no place in that starting area to sell my stuff too I was becoming frustrated with the bag management I was having to do just to get into the game and considering you need to do a few things before you could get into Tortage I considered the time not worth it.

Their payment model was not very friendly to me and as such I didn't want to waste my time with it.

I would like to play Age of Conan but if they don't come up with a better payment model or at the very best follow what TSW did they will never get my patronage.

So, a game with great potential. Just managed very very poorly.

Most all of the PVE complaints with this game are solved with a subscription. Not enough bag space, can't roll the character I want, can't access all the zones, and whatever else. It's all solved by subbing. You can FtP but you will be restricted. That is just the way the game is set up. If you like the game enough to stick around and play,  it is probably worth subbing to. If you don't like the game that much, take what is offered as FtP, dabble with it and move on. That is really the two options with this game.

Funny how subjective games are! I play AoC because it is the only MMO I find immersive at all. My son is like this, dad why do you play this game? He doesn't get it at all. I should be playing a real MMO like EVE. I couldn't care less about EVE and deep space. I tried FF14 for a while but all I could think of is, why am I spending time with this when I could be playing Age of Conan?
I  feel lucky that There is this great  MMO I really enjoy playing. So many are looking for something worthy of their time, moving from this MMO to that MMO. Age of Conan hits the sweet spot for me. People trash it and I shake my head and wonder, are they playing the same game I am? The game shouts quality in graphics, music, art, level design, motion quality, detailed environments. The combat is excellent, the quests are pretty fun, fantastic dungeons. And then the Conan IP is great, just the right blend of fantasy and down to earth reality. It's a great package and unique to the genre in many ways when you see past the surface and deeper into the game.
It all comes down to perception, how the game is perceived and if you appreciate what the game offers.

You know what, I was wondering what game to play till ESO comes out and went down the entire list of games, looking for games that are sub based and came out in the last year....    then I was like wow, theres really no AAA titles... kept searching, then I found LOTRO, but I had so much of that I was sick of it....    kept going and There she was!   My precious little angel.   Age of Conan..    I went to my sub page, see a lot has changed, entered my info for billing and noticed 4 whole years has gone by, and not a single MMORPG that was as high quality as this game has game out since then.  Welll,   I"M BACK!!!!

I think I'm going to start a whole new character too.   Just to see the whole storyline again!!!!  Already feel EXCITED!  Waiting for download now.... lol.

I'm in the same boat as you Lucky Ducky,  I played FFXIV up till 2.1 and said "I WONT TAKE THIS ANYMORE, IM AS MAD AS HELL...."    well long story short,  I dint want to spend my next few months grinding for no progression.

I should be spending my time having fun like this game has.  Not to mention, I now have a newer computer and can handle this game on max im pretty sure, back in the day it was really hard to run this game on my old system....    Since that time multicores have droped in price and now I'm ready to see what it looks like on MAX SETTINGS!

I hated the combat from the first day I started beta testing it.
  • mayh3mmayh3m Member UncommonPosts: 79

Well for me its because even though I paid for the Xpac and had subbed for a while if I come back now i have to rent the Xpac content unless I sub. It just feels like they are double-dipping.

Its a bummer because I have always enjoyed healing classes and they have some of the most fun around. My ToS on the way to max level was probably the most fun i have had leveling a toon. Plus who doesnt love a Bear Shaman!

    Current: BDO
Looking forward to: Crowfall & Chronicles of Elyria

I played for a few months at launch. I think I had the best leveling experience of any MMO in AoC, even back then. I loved the open world PvP to. Even the gap after lvl 70 or so I believe I didn't mind. There wasn't much end game content back then tho. That's why I quit. I remember once we were raiding with our guild.. suddenly our tank was missing.. but he was singing on TS and didn't respond to us. So we went looking for him in the castle we were raiding.. found him after a few minutes naked in a bath tub... ohhh good times :) I might try it again.

    :)

I know it's just necroing of an age-old thread, but I don't mind to bump it because this ^^ was hilarious:)

I have a similar one, my first time at Atzel with my shammy (as the main healer, with a lower level shammy as a backup). I love to chit-chat with npc's, FC wrote awesome and/or funny backstories to them, and in Atzel's Fortress there are a few I met the first time since it was my first Atzel run. It's conversation-time!

After a few minutes I heard "heal me" and "where's the heal". What do you mean, I'm at the npc's... Turned out the idiots took all the quests from the "questbots" (with pressing a bunch of 1,1,1,1,1 in a few sec, 'cos reading is just a waste of time, right?) and moved forward. Without me. Or without even noticing it. Lol.

And for why did they started a fight without the main healer, HiveLeader has a great video about healing in MMOs, this situation is covered under Lesson #4 :)

I'm playing. Got a 6 months sub from one of the recent special offers.

Game is kick ass and looks top notch on a modern graphics card

I`m so happy the game seems so alive again after the server merges; right now I can`t believe there is a better MMO out :)

I just deleted an old alt and created a new toon, ans I am loving it (still).

I was even able to create a group for Black Castle, which I had not played through for years. Man that last boss is tough for a pug at the right level (gasp).

I still remember Black Castle as being a great instance. I played the game for a long time. The graphics are great. Funcom annoyed me with the awful ranger revamp. The pace of new content has been glacial as well.

Took one look at the site and was immediately turned off

    Here's why:

First impression - non innovative web design

Second impression - F2P vs P2P format posted right on front page and that immediately turned me off when I saw the F2P restrictions.

    Content Free Premium
Character Classes Full access Full Access
AC:HA Adventure Zones Full access Full access
AC:RotG Adventure Zones (incl. Faction system) Gateway to Khitai Full Access

If you'd allow me to translate (or just shorten) that chart:

you can play the entire original game (Hyborian Adventures - never liked calling original releases as "vanilla") for free, with limited inventory and trader spaces, a 10 gold limit, and with only 2 character slots. What's wrong with that? :)

AoC's f2p is pretty good actually since the model revamp, its only problem is that you can't access Godslayer if you are not a subscriber - I mean problem for those who like the faction grind :) But - lol the irony - that surely wasn't the cause of your "just No" decision since it's not on that chart.
