Warcraft borrowed alot from Warhammer but, and this may sound like a contradiction but it is not, Warhammer ONLINE borrowed alot from World of Warcraft.
What this means is that the lore of Warcraft is very much inspired from that of Warhammer but the game elements of Warhammer Online looks very much inspired from from the game elements of World of Warcraft. All the way how cartoony the gfx are down to the way the UI looks.
So I would say Mythic is just as guilty as Blizzard is when it comes down to borrowing things.

I completely agree. Kinda funny how that worked out in the end.

I can already see how this will turn out. The week before Rift comes out, Blizzard announces that "something special" will be happening in Warcraft that will affect everyone in the game.
Then, they give you a grinding daily (Where you will only receive 150 rep a day), and once you hit exalted (After about 1.5 years), you will get a new pet, that looks just like another pet, but is a different color. The sad thing is, people will eat it up and call it generous and thank them for this "gift".
Alright so it sounds like Trion Worlds is calling Blizzard out !
Its Biggie and Pac all over again ! Its David and Goliath ! Its Tyson vs. That Guy with the bit off ear !
So my question is this? Does TW have the goods to call out the undisputed king?
Or are They in over there heads?
I never played Rift although , i have been following it.
So im kinda wanting to read what other people think about this LOUD shout to blizzard
Not a chance Rift will defeat WoW. WoW is ten times less linear than Rift. It has a bigger world with more choices over where to go for one thing.
Wow not linear? What? WoW is as linear as it ever gets. You constantly follow the same path, with alittle variation where to go next. Tactics online that all guilds except the one posting it follow, so all guilds do the raids the same way, as if it was only one way to do a raid. Only thing that is less linear in wow is the pvp in that case, but with all kids rolling OP classes it basicly facerolling every other bg fight. Saying wow is ten times less linear than any other game is just plain wrong, don't get me wrong, I like wow, I love the lore. But it is not dynamic. Phasing is not dynamic, just a way to evolve the gameexperience while you do the same quests you did with one of your other alt. But I give you that WoW's world is big. But it is linear, same thing over and over. But now with phasing to make it seem dynamic, but whats dynamic with that when the same phasing will occure on your other chars?
There are ultimately more paths to follow in WoW because, for one, there are more races, and two, there are more zones for each levelling segment. They're the main things.
What you descirbed about all raids following the same tactics isn't a game thing, it's a community thing. The game isn't designed to tell people all to do the same thing. It's like in EQ2 where bards became almost a necessity for groups, even though they never needed to be. The community just gets ideas in their heads and it's very hard to shake. Any group could have gotten by without a bard but people were unwilling to test themselves and try new things.
In Rift there are essentially two races because there are only two start areas; one for the Guardians and one for the Defiant. There are opnly 14 zones, and Port Scion is rumoured to be all about PvP and there are really only 4 classes with 8 trees to branch in to.
I'm not a WoW fan but I can see that there's more diversity in that game.

Getting people talking is easy, Paris Hilton and Lindsy Lohan make the news every week. Maybe Trion should hire them for PR too?
Would you want Paris & Lindsy to promote your product Oo
Does this trailer suprise me...no, TW has been saying the whole time that Rift is similar to wow.
But you know the old saying "Don't bring a knife to a gun battle".

you know maybe just maybe they are trying to say that you don't have to be a wow killer to be successful. Maybe you can take the formula and tack on something novel and be successful. frankly the onlly peple making the endless wow comparisons are mmo gamers. the general gaming community and public don't care. frankly it would be nice to see rift pick up the people who tried wow but weren't impressed with it or its rather anal community.

Judging from the field of failed WoW clones, this is a fact. The only successful growing MMOs on the market today are the ones that did their own thing and have NOTHING to do with WoW.

News is different from marketing. The goal of a marketer is to make you think about their product and then purchase it, use it, etc....
Trion's marketing department did a great job with the ad. True, I wish there was a bit more action but they advertised their product and put in a little sentence that got people talking.
In truth, the sentence was perfect. They chose a medium that most games do not choose when you are a lesser-known game. Sure Black Ops, God of War, etc... can run ads like that mainly because people know the game. With this Trion is after that crowd that says "I know WOW" and that is it. Its like saying "hey, we have this fantasy MMO we want you to play and we know you play WOW and this isn't WOW but because we know you do play WOW we think you will like our game".
I think its a brilliant strategy. Now the major question is will Rift live up to its potential. I think so but only time will tell.
Marketing is not so different than making the news. Product identification is paramount, second comes interest in the product. Annoying jingles are a prime example, stupid commercials are another. You knew who I was referring to when I said the product name Lindsy Lohan and Paris Hilton. You may not be interested in buying them but millions are, even though they are cheesy and cheap. That is very successful marketing, considering what those products do, which is nothing really.
My problem with the ad is not HOW they mentioned WoW, but that they feel the need to mention it at all. If, like it has been stated by others so often Trion is copying Blizzard, why didn't they copy their marketing and sell the game on it's own terms and not in comparison. I never remember seeing an ad for WoW where they even mention another game.
I still like Rift, still plan on playing it, just a cheesy, lazy and I feel unnecessary move even tossing a WoW reference in there.
How do you compete with someone who is winning with such simple mechanics? ( Don't argue because, yes, for every "clone" that comes out and sustains even the smallest playerbase makes it look that much simpler.)
It's like Call of Duty: Black Ops saying "Were not in modern warfare anymore!"

The most ironic slogan in the history of MMOs
