RIFT Is just your average mmo, its nothing special besides the RIFTS which will get boring. The company knows there game will not last thats why they have the good old "pre-order and get into beta! And get all this in-game shit too!" ad.
As well as the classic "Buy a full year and save money!!!"
Its alright but there is no chance in hell I would recommend pre-ordering it, don't waste your money wait for it to come out and see what people think.
Typical wow clone. Even more theme park than wow. World graphics are nice, character models are generally bad with human + high elves decent. What made me uninstall was the multi-classing. I just can't get into that stupidity.

You seem awful agressive towards Trion. What did it ever do to you? You've either never played the game or you're making a judgement based on what you've heard...more like what you wanted to hear.
The CE for the game is actually pretty damn good. A real bang for your buck. Go ahead and check out what you get and try to tell me this isn't the best CE to ever be released for the value.
The founders price isn't even that. Because Trion VALUES their fan base, they are letting those that jump in with the game at launch (up to March 15th) an option to sub three ways. You can go month to month $14.99 (standard price.) You can go 3 months $12.99 per month. You can go 6 months $9.99 per month. This price is locked in as long as you hold a subscription.
Yes, charging people 10 bucks to play a new P2P game is some evil scheme to get your money.
Is this game GW2? SWTOR? Tera? nope. It's Rift and I know it's good. I've played it passed level 12 (where most are drawing their conclusions) and know what this game is offering. So wait if you want the other games. They might be good. But this game is good and solid. When's the last time you've played a AAA game that was solid and complete at launch?
From the sounds of it they should have made the starting levels more engaging as that is where most of the complaints are coming from. You only have one chance to make a good first impression after all.

that's a good deal for sure, I wasn't aware of the reduced rates for longer subs, still on the fence right now, not because i dislike the game, but I am just about to start another and see how it pans out

I had no issue with the starting levels, found them very well layed with the content pushing you to the time machine ... Found the defiant side very immersive.
Maybe. I guess it is just a personal thing. I've just read too many comments on people not even playing past the first hour. Any sort of entertainment, whether it is a game, a book, a movie, needs to grab you right at the start. From all of the reviews so far I'm getting a mixed reaction about the starting area.
Now granted, you have to have more than a great start. AoC had probably the best initial starting experience in an mmo but then laid an egg at later levels.

I have never judged a MMO based solely on the starting level. That's just rediculous. I actually was waiting to see what Gloamwood was like before I was 100% sure that this was the next game for me. Guess what?
Game has a good future, will do really good the starting zones from what i saw when i logged in yesterday look immense and i like the soul system and the whole game in general

Not that I mean to bring it up, but GW2 will let you jump in from day 1 and pay absolutely nothing as far as subscription goes.

You can play this "game" until GW2 comes out. You won't need a sub for it though as it has no monthly fee.

Thanks, I'll probably be ready for a new MMO anyways in 2012. I'm just saying, until it's official...it isn't official.
I have just finished another 7 hours of testing this pig. Now, while i am only lvl 26 (cap for beta is 27). I think i can honestly say i have given this game about as fair of shot as i can to impress me. Still waiting..
World creation: Alright, nothing so horrible you point and laugh but this isn't going to win any prizes for adding any thing new either.
Animations: About on par with most every other game out there. Again nothing your going to be amazed with.
Quests and progression: Same wow like system here. Holds your hand every step of the way.
Look/Style: Yup, its an asian mmo alright.(weather it is or it isn't doesn't matter, that what it looks like)
Custom Character Creation: Probably is one of the best out there as far as making your look(upon creation any ways) unique to you. It's nothing that will make you stand out in a crowd. But it's better then most MMO's out there.
Multi Class System: Although i probably should applaud this, i won't. It isn't the breath of fresh air to a character creation i am looking for. It might be more then enough for you though. Same skill tree progression system as wow, where the top skills/buffs/what not are at the top. They give you a limited number of skill points to spend as you lvl. If you spread them to thin, you won't max any of them. Again another game that can't plan for a character that is maxed in more then one class.
Dungeons: Nothing special here also. Same as any other MMO made in the last 5-6 years.
PvP Battle Grounds/ War Fronts: Have you played wow or warhammer ? Same feel, as far as the way combat is. But not as good on actual lay out of the zone or purpose given to the encounter.
"Open world" PvP: Same basic idea of enter into PvP lakes/area's, get flagged for PvP. Kill anyone, you can. Nothing new and no real purpose.
Rifts: As i stated before with these. They are started by players, for no better reason then they can start em. It forces a zone wide event or "invasion". A fairly large amount of players are needed to stop them. So why this might work well in beta or at launch. I'm sure you can see how this rushed idea might have a lot of downside as the populations in the area's start to fall off. There is no purpose to them. Does not matter what faction the Rift belongs too. Nothing drastic will change in the world.
So, like i said before. If your looking for a new wow clone that requires very little skill and absolutely no thought. Rift might just be the game for you. Looking for the "Next Generation" mmo ? Keep looking..
Myself, i plan to uninstall and forget this wow flash back ever took place.
This game kinda creeps up on you. Initially I was not very interested but now I think over time as I levelled I think the game could be a good one.
AGREED. The more I play the more I want to play. But it's a slow process. I'm glad it is grabbing me though. I need something to hold me over till SWTOR and GW2.
The game won't do that well. It's an MMO, that's really all. It feels exactly like Warhammer. The combat feels generic. None of the abilities I acquired during the first 20 levels on any of my souls looked special. The coolest one on paper was "Launches a meteor towards an enemy". Even that turned out to be such a tiny fireball that I had to stand 20 feet away from my target to actually see it. The monsters are generic, the quests are generic, and the world looks generic.
There's just nothing special about the game, which is a shame. Here's a short rundown:
Graphics: Character models look good for the most part. Scaling is off though, some people look like giants compared to others. Textures in the world are bland, monsters early on are mostly unimpressive. NPCs look like they were ripped straight out of WAR.
Sound: It's alright. The music is really good but the combat sounds are pretty standard. Doesn't get annoying.
Classes: The best feature so far, the ability to combine souls gives you more of a unique feel. There's still something off here. I was a Druid/Justicar/Shaman, and all 3 of these souls had a "Deals 7-9+weapon damage to target". That's 3 identical abilities. Feels weird.
Combat: This is where the game fails miserably in my opinion. It's just not fun. Logout and pop on something like WoW and you'll instantly feel the difference. It's hard to explain. Actions happen on key release rather than keypress, the global cooldown is a bit too long, and none of your abilities give any memorable visual feedback on actually being used. It's almost like I'm just standing there autoattacking everything, despite using all my abilities.
Rifts: The game's unique feature, kinda falls flat. It's fun - at times. You have 0 chance here of going in alone, 8+ elite mobs will pound you in a second. When there's a lot of people there, it's fun, but it's brought down by the mediocre combat. Again, all I'm doing is hitting my abilities and watching healthbars go down. There's no satisfaction here from doing anything.
Races: Only 1 starting area for each faction regardless of race picked. This is rather failish, as the number of quests is so low that a second character will be doing the exact same quests.
They made an MMO that's basically Warhammer Online with a different setting. It's solid, it's polished, it works as advertised. It just doesn't stand out, and doesn't bring anything to the table to pull you away from whatever MMO it is you're playing.
One thing I'll say that stood out for me is the achievement / character progression system. I know WoW implemented this recently and LOTRO+WAR have had it for a while, but finding artifacts and doing stuff to unlock that achievement compels you to keep going. Don't know many games that had this polished upon release, but this one has it.
