I like the game alot so far, but i'm afraid it's just TOO much of the same old for me to keep me hooked.

The game is a mix of everything i'm already tired of for years and it has absolutely NO own identity. The rifts, ok... but i tell you it's a matter of 3-4 weeks until people will start to ignore them altogether or they'll get nerfed to nothingness because of constant whining of pve carebears. Soulsystem lacks depth, Combat (aka all hail to the omnipresent GCD) is rather slow and not exciting at all.

However,  I would still give the game a well deserved chance and go for it...but

-49Eur is too much for a game that just shrieks generic in your face. 39eur boxed, 35eur ddl and we can talk. But i guess they'll very soon give in on this point.

    -performance problems to the max.: 1920 ultra= 30fps, 1280 low= 30fps

-no AA and no word on if AA will be enabled at release or later (sorry, this is really ridiculous). Gamebryo and Warhammer allover again.

Moreover, the game doesn't have AA enabled yet so I can imagine how much of an FPS hit I'll take if an AA option is added. And it's not like the game has amazing graphics. It's basically like an upgraded version of WAR. I was getting 60FPS is FFXIV and even though that game sucks, the graphics are pretty sweet and tons better than Rift.

I'm not convinced the fps that the game shows is accurate. If you have another way of testing that I would suggest you do so. My fps is showing 15 to 20 on ultra but it's very smooth which says to me that something doesn't add up.

This is exactly the case for me. I am around 27 fps on ultra settings and I have had zero issues with performance.

I'm getting 30fps on ultra displayed by the ingame counter and also by FRAPS. Seems like the value shown ingame is about correct.

I also wouldn't say that these 30 fps plays too choppy, but i'm getting headaches after about 30minutes of playing.

First post on here in like 8 or so years.

I will admit, I will try any MMO I can even if it doesn't look good at all.

I saw RIFT at PAX Prime this last year and got a beta invite there. My initial thought were that it was pretty generic with some interesting twists.

I've played the previous 3 beta phases. At first, it was completely generic. I'll list some of the major things I didn't and did like about the game.

So, my class of choice is usually Necromancer if it's available, then anything with magic with an actiony flair to it's gameplay. I went with mage, and it was rather lackluster. Got the Necromancer soul as soon as possible and the soul system seemed really intriguing and kind of fresh. Sadly, the necro class was a typical caster, nothing new or terribly intuitive. Kind of got bored and made characters of every archetype. I usually hate the warrior classes, but for some reason I fell in love with paladin.

In contrast to what some have said, my experience with the combat was positive. I enjoyed it actually. At least most of it. I enjoyed the mechanics of the paladin, but had to change my souls around at a later level because warlord wasn't doin it for me. I am playing right now with a Paladin/Void Knight/Ravager I believe. I just got to level 18 and got the paladins version of charge and it is amazing. The combo of Paladin and Void Knight has some very awesome mechanics. However, I feel like I am getting too many abilities.

Sadly, there is a Complete lack of art style, everything is kind of bland with that 'let's make everything realistic' feel to it. Some monsters are just goofy looking, like most of the Fire plane mobs, and the fey creatures. Dwarves look awful.  Textures are boring and muddy, but my computer isn't the greatest. Models are lame and uninteresting, animations are subpar (the Aelfwar death animation is bizarre, where they fling themselves sideways with their arm in the air?) The enviornment is kind of mediocre. Take this with a grain of salt, however, I am an animation major so when it coems to game art I can be really picky.

So, I love questing. I can do it night and day and be compeltely happy. However, i kind of hate doing the same thing twice (as in the same exact quest, not similiar quests). It is really lame that their is a faction starting area and no racial or class starting areas. That means if I make a new character...i have to redo everything I've already done. /Cringe. I tried to make two different characters Guardian side...had to make a choice. Couldn't stand doing the exact same thing over, to get to a high enough level to do pvp and rifts.

Speaking of Rifts, I find the rift system really cool and fun. To me it makes teh world seem mroe alive, since you have all sorts of factions and monsters running to and fro and doing battle all around. Not to mention they provide great XP and item rewards for participating. Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks is that some of the foothold rift's that take over and occupy quest hubs can be annoying. It's fine that the quest hub is inactive while under enemy control, and that players have to gain control back, but sometimes there is no one around and these footholds can't be soloed as when you attack one mob, the entire battalion bee lines for that specfic player. I would be fine with it if I could take back the foothold on my own, even if it took forever, or the rewards weren't as good. I feel like the rift events should scale with how many players are in the immeadiate vicinity and not just the entire zone (which was rather expansive)

    Just some of my thoughts.

I am going to keep this short, and simple...I hope. ;)

This game is not for me.

Did not like the questing system, it had way too many generic quests. Plus the hand holding is over the top IMO.

Soul system is interesting, but too many of the different "skills" are simply clones of earlier ones. This makes it feel like the skills were just added for the sake of having tons of skills available.

    Combat is slow and boring.

World design and Graphics are above average, but the linear progression (ala Warhammer) kills any sense of exploration.

There are more reason I have personally, but the biggest turn off for me right now is the community in this game. This game has one of the worst communities I have had the pleasure of dealing with in-game. Sadly the way the game is designed also lends to this disenchantment. No real incentives to actually group in most situations, and the themepark attitude causes most players to run around at full speed collecting quests and or killing Mobs. This leads to players purposely kill stealing or just simply griefing to finish as fast as possible. Ironically the spawn rates are so high you would think this is a non-issue...but alas. I had one individual tell me I wasn't "fast enough" like this is a twitch based game lol.

I had yet to see anyone stop in-game to chat with other players... this is an MMO right? What ever happened to the social aspect of these things? Maybe I am spoiled by the LotRo community...

I have lots of respect for Trion, as I think they have done an admirable job considering their experience. Not to mention how polished this game is in beta. I wish them all the best and hope they do well, but it will be without me.

Once again, thank you guys so much for posting your reviews, they really are appreciated. Now that I have access to the beta 4 (thank you to dude who's name I can't remember for the account) I will be able to try out RIFT first-hand.

I too will post my own review on this thread once the beta ends.

How is multi-classing stupid? It gives a much larger variety of gameplay than just 4 or 5 set classes like EVERY other MMO does. I knew from the first three words of your comment you where going to look like a giant douche though.

AGREED.  The more I play the more I want to play.  But it's a slow process.  I'm glad it is grabbing me though.  I need something to hold me over till SWTOR and GW2.

I had to re-roll the good guys before it caught on.

I would still like 10 minutes in a room alone with the asshat that designed the dwarfs in rift. A fucking disgrace, they look and feel like shit.

Other than that everything is going ok.

The questing is kinda like WAR, Combat feels good, I like the multi-classing (now that i rolled a Tank). Rifts are what PQs should have been, the first dungeon is epic.

    Crafting while simple is useful.

I mean its a polished game even if its a bit generic.

Plenty of look, not much feel.

Smooth probably the smoothest beta I've ever been in and I've been in a ton. Gameplay is way linear.

There are invisible walls. I wont pay money for a product that employs invisible walls as its a symptom of a much larger design oriented laziness.

I love the Art but hate the graphics if that makes any sense. The player models, in my opinion just suck. Nothing new here. Of course the MOBS look great.

The mechanics are awesome. but the gameplay design is uninspired go here kill that. Simply horrid.

Lots of good but no real improvement in the field of game play.

Did the opposite with me. The more I played it, the less interested I got.  Too bad too, because I really wanted a new game to play.

Yeah, I'm with you there.  Leveling seems like even a casual could get done in a month at tops even not trying.  The game has some unique features, but the combat in the game is near FPS paced.  The more I play, the more I actually don't want to play the game if that makes sense, it is the same old rehashed with  twist, but I feel older games have more fun factor.

The other problem is unless your on a pvp server, there doesn't seem much to do outside of go "rifting" which loses its appeal quite quickly.

I don't mean General chat (aka Barrens type chat) as that is usually always full of fluff, I am talking about world chat. Try random conversations with people your character meets. I have not had one single person comment back to me... other than to argue. *shrug*

Taking that one step further - as I rolled my healer I never received one TY for helping out. Granted random heals usually go unnoticed in any mmo, but with the general lack of communication this only compounds my issue. Everyone is rushing around so fast almost no one is taking their time to absorb themselves into the "world".

Of course this is simply my experience, if you are having a better time of it I am really glad for you. I just wish I could see it too.

Rift is a lot more interesting than Forsaken World.  Forsaken World's music puts me to sleep.

The problem is that it has a ton of boring go fetch go kill quests which put me to sleep and when rifts appear I don't even wan't to go through the process over and over again.  I tell ya though, the game is already highly polished and looks really good.

Hey guys, I'm just having some trouble updating the client and launching the game.

Please post any help you have at http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/302769. Thank you all once again!

Rift is extremely polished which is very refreshing after dealing with sh** like WAR, AoC, STO & the likes. The art style(realistic) is lovely & the game itself runs smooth as silk on my dual core 3ghz. All that being said though, after 20 levels the hardest fight I found in the game was with boredom...... There is literally nothing about this game that grabs me in any way shape or form, the story doesn't pull me in in any way. I felt absolutely no connection to my character. The only excitement I got in the game at all was from the rifts which seemed to open up randomly(though I later found out that there's a system to them). The rifts would either have a group of people ready to fight the onslaught of mobs or they would open up over just a couple of players & then proceed to a**rape them to death. Which I found to be hilarious but I wouldn't be surprised if they get toned down due to whiners not paying attention & dying too often.

The quests are the same old boring quests you can find in any mmorpg, no variation whatsoever. The warfronts(pvp battleground/scenario/whatever you call it) was a snoozefest. Kill the man with the ball style much like Mourkain Temple from Warhammer. I didn't get a chance to do any dungeons but from what I read in general chat it was much of the same. It's really like Trion took bits & pieces from other games & put them into Rift. It's actually glaringly obvious that thats what they did as a lot of the items even have the same exact names as from other mmo's & many of the tabs in the UI look exactly like those from other mmo's.

If I were playing WoW still & had a mediocre toon & was tired of WoW I could see myself transitioning to Rift pretty easily. However if I were looking for something new, which I am, I would skip this game. Also if I were a hardcore player in another game i would pass on Rift also. It's actually so much like other mmo's that I wouldn't feel like I'm starting a new journey, it felt more like rerolling another character in a game I have already been playing for years.

  • spacebotspacebot Member UncommonPosts: 148

The NPCs have better looking outfits than we get. And there is no armor remodeling skin option. In a new mmo. That right there says alot to me. Not sure what since it's talking in latin and I've forgotten my latin.

I like the skill/class system I think. The rifts are nifty. The world seems well done. The rest is nothing new. Shades of wow/lotro/warhammer.

But with bad looking armor. Seriously the NPCS get the cool stuff while we get  the old moldy stuff from Frodo's celler! Even the "sexy" armor looks bad.

I thought this game/event  was awesome and I didnt even really encounter any major bugs or other issues.

    I mostly played a Warrior - Paragon/Riftblade/Beastmaster. Nice DPS.

5 stars - look for 1 million plus subs at launch.

  • I got into all 4 beta phases thus far and honestly I like the game. Will I buy it? No. Did I play this past weekend? Yes, for about 20 minutes. Will I participate if there is another phase? Probably not.

While it's polished and pretty and works well it doesn't have the pull to keep me interested.

I had an awesome time in CB4. My review is coming soon. Played a Riftstalker/ranger/assassin. Best balanced all around for a rogue. Though some might argue.

Rift is truly a great game. The complaints people have towards this game are not only aimed at Rift, but all/most MMORPGs on the market. It's definitely worth a try, to say the least.
