I have two guitar idols; Joe Satriani for electric, Andy Mckee for acoustic.
This is "Blue Liquid" by Mckee, and probably the best sound quality and visualization of his technique you can find on the interwebs, trust me, I keep searching for better examples on a weekly basis. He's one of the hardest working musicians in the biz, doing hundreds of shows a YEAR. Yes, he will bust out a tour doing a show almost everynight, then go off to europe and do it again, and again when he returns.
I saw him play live nearly a month ago with Eric Johnson and Peppino D'Augustino for a "guitar masters" tour. All three of them got down on this song, with the others doing a backup tune to it on guitar/piano. It was mindblowing.
My cousin introduced me to Mckee a couple years ago. Yeah, he's good! One of my favorite solo musicians.
One problem I have paying homage to any individual soloist, however is that I've been in the music scene for more than half my life. I've seen some guys playing guitar, bass and drums who would blow your mind! Playing them together, well, in a band, however, is an entirely different scenerio.
I save my true hero-worship for guys like this who can do this solo (Dream Theater has even performed with him):
ok so as i cant find i multi quote ill do it as i know (please dont laugh)
@ Lerxst
Yep, i like mozart aswell. Paganini on the other hand is unknown to me. Would be appreciated if posted here some of his best work.
And to the "Michael Romeo - Star Wars Suite". This music is excelent. This guy has some awesome guitar skills, and the song really gets catchy to my ears.
"Steve Howe - Clap + Mood for a day" howcome didnt i know this guy, seems like playing guitar is as natural as walking for him (2:12-2:16 mind blowing). Really nice, thanks.
"Nine Inch Nails: Gave Up (1992)" tbh i only like the song untill the 1:00 mark. I mean, i dont dislike the rest, but seems the song dies a bit. I also like the instrumentals alot. (1:20-1:50)
@ GTwander
"Andy McKee - Blue Liquid @ The Mint" really soft and relaxing music. Liked it very much.
"Andy Mckee- Away (Sand Diego 4th and B Studio)" This dude. Look the way he plays with the ropes! dawm, it seems easy from here...
Also, i cant stop thinking how lucky you were by being able to watch this show. It really must have been a good show.
Fine, as we are diving into the guitar solo theme, i couldnt let Van halen out of the list.

Honestly, Andy was the heart of the whole show. Everyone outside (when i took smoke breaks) went on about how they are all there for Andy, and that he should be headlining. I fully agreed.
Eric Johnson honestly put me to sleep. Peppino was decent, but a bit too folk/country for my tastes... though the last song of the night was one of his that all 3 of them got down on, and it was F'n amazing.
Andy himself is just legendary, and a hell of a dude. First thing I did when he came on was rush the floor, squeezing past everyone that merged out front to see him up close, and yelled "wooooooo!" while putting up the devil horns. He had a good laugh and said he appreciated the enthusiasm. In fact, in that vid at the 4:50 mark or so, when he pulled out the harp guitar and gave back the devil horns and talked about how he was into Metallica and Pantera, that was basically to me - and everyone else who started throwing up the devil horns once it became the cool thing to do (as it should be, god dammit). Dude's awesome on all fronts.

My wife accuses me of being a musical "snob" a lot of times. I picked up a guitar when I was 16 and that's when I first heard this song. It changed my life forever. No wonder I'm a snob if this is the kind of music I compare the rest to
La Villa Strangiato - Rush (Yes, only three guys making all that sound)
Oh well, you could post endless types of different music. And the great thing is, that music is so different..would not everyone miss a big part if you stick just with one type of music..I think so.
Since you guys are posting already about "guitar" type music, I will post one type of music which isnt really heard by the masses and is just an advancement of the early RocknRoll era. It belongs to the psychobilly genre, name of the band is Guana Batz.
Neverless, I will post a second type of music which is comming from southern Latin America. Its roots has an African influence and belongs to samba but advanced to the modern brasilian Axe samba style, quiete happy music and learned to love it in the longer time I travelled in S-America. The band is very famous over there and called Terrasamba.
If you are not reluctant on more experimental music, I can recommand to listen to some of the songs of Anandar Shankar. Its really not a music style you could hear every day but it was a damn genius and it really expands a bit the music horizont aswell, the ideas of some of his titles are inspiring.
This has some kind of Funk with drum n base rythms..he was ahead of its time I guess
i absolutely loathe ween, but everyone in my town loves them. i mean everyone: metal heads, thug rappers, techno heads, country fans, alternative fans, emo kids, old timers, all of them. although it is funny to be at a kegger and see some hardcore fat biker guys dancing in a circle to this song, singing at the top of their lungs.

I guess I shouldn't feel bad about hating that video then, eh?
Anyone here know Oingo Boingo... or Danny Elfman (their singer)?
This guy's become a Hollywood legend - composer for every Tim Burton film made, from Pee Wee's Big Adventure and on. Also sang Jack Skelington in "The Nightmare Before Christmas".
Yes, those were clips from "Back to School" with Rodney Dangerfield - they were the band playing in the party scene in the movie.
My music horizons are already pretty expanded, however, there is still certain music I cannot listen to. I've listened to some of the songs posted so far, and I'm going to add some now.
Rush - La Villa Strangiato (A show of Hands) - This is a trully dynamic show. They play their instruments so smoothly and nice. Really like this one.
Guana Bats - Radio Sweetheart - Funky, country style?
Deus é Brasileiro - Terra samba - The thing is, i understand all the "singer" is saying, wich makes it even more awesome. One thing tho, the name has lots of controversy in it. Nonetheless great song imo.
I really love all the Ananda Shankar musics you posted, except for the first one wich i only like after the 1:20 mark, they are all so positive, they send us good vibes, you know?
Push Th´ little daises - by ween - well, this kinda stays on my neutral side. I dont dislike it, but its not that great, too. Its even kinda funny the way he repeats "push th´little daises and make em come up".
Oingo Boingo - Deadmans party - Never had listen to Oingo Boingo, but i really like their style. Sweet 80´s?
Suicidal tendencies - Institutionalized - Never heard nothing alike this, i mean the type. The guy is literally talking while the instrumentals are playing. Well, its weird. Nonetheless i dont dislike it, guess it stays on my neutral side, too.
Herb Alpert - Rise - Like it alot. Makes me remember HillStreet Blues.
Without any introduction, since anything i can say is not enough to show the greatness (imho),
sade has always had a place in my heart. she is classy, her voice is amazing, and she ages like fine wine. "cherry pie" is one of my favorite songs of hers that wasn't ever released as a single. here's a live version of it. it sounds better than the album version, IMO.

Sade is one of those artists who falls into that strange category on my MP3 player - you'd go from Beastie Boys and Metallica to Sade. Catches people off guard alot of times Yeah, she has class, not like the chicks singing today!!
Speaking of the contrast... what about some Queensryche:

i've never gotten into queensryche. as for sade, i could listen to her all day long. i've been reading more comments comparing her to beyonce. beyonce cannot be compared to sade! sade has actual vocal talent and doesn't need to act like a hoe in order to sell records. if i ever get a chance to see her live. i'm totally going, and i had better take an attractive woman with me.
sidenote: i just moved to the pacific-northwest from scottsdale. i arrived here yesterday morning.
"overlord" by skinless - Its not my bread and butter, and honestly i thinks has too much screaming but on the other hand i liked the instrumentals. Afterall its "hearable" (?), to me.
Steve Vai- Crossroads guitar duel - What a funny clip. Is that taken from any film? it gave me that impression. Also, steve vai doesnt make mistakes. (jk)
Sade (11/17) - Cherry Pie - Very smooth and nice. Seems like this is the kind of music played on the casino and glamorous places. That music plus a (good) girl would give me a good night, if you know what i mean.
Queensryche - Revolution Calling - Nothing that special to add, the song speaks for itself (by the positive, imo). Its on my favorites.
" i just moved to the pacific-northwest from scottsdale. i arrived here yesterday morning." hope its for the best, and i wish you good luck and a start of a new (good) life there
Strong lyrics, a real meaning. Try to understand. Rap is not for everyone (as every other type of music), but hey lets try to expand our horizons. Give it a try.

BTW the music starts only at 1:15 mark.
I'm a musician and learned a long time ago that music can come from anywhere and be about anything I'm not Christian but really liked the song anyhow... wonder if my wife knows about it (since she is). Definitely not what I'd consider "cRap" like most of the others out there (although I did hear auto-tune kick in now and then).
Since you said this is about expanding horizons, here's a cross between Rock and Soul. I'm sure we've all heard it before, but have you seen the 1969 video yet?

i took a lovely lady to a brian culbertson and dave koz show in los angeles about 2 1/2 months ago. i don't think i need to say what it resulted in.
the pacific-northwest is great. i moved up here for school and because i've always known i'd end up here at some point in my life. i came here quite a bit due to my old job. there are all kinds of pretty ladies up here. with them, i feel i can start on a fresh slate rather than ones in the southwest who THINK they know truly me.
i do enjoy some real good rap music. i'm more into the underground scene. there are commercial acts i will make special exceptions for. outkast is one of those exceptions. they can do no wrong.
here's a song by the blue scholars. they're from seattle. this song fits with what the big stuff coming up in the next half year and beyond. it's called "no rest for the weary." to me, their music is love and respect.
You guys are making me add some odd variety to my MP3 player I'm in the process of downloading No Rest For the Weary's for my collection as I type this - love that combo of lyrics and music.
This one needs some explanation...
The album was released back in 1976 and comes with a story printed on the inside cover (CD and mp3's don't include this story anymore). This video's a mix of that story with a fan-made slideshow "experience" of the science fiction based, 20 minute epic - 2112. (Part 2's on the right-hand list)
Notice the song changes to the "hero" just learning to play when he first finds the guitar and how the vocalist changes his style between the "good guy" and the "bad guys"? It also has different chapters that are headlined in the video.
This is classic 70's Progressive Rock at it's best (in my opinion)!
I'm gonna call this "Five Shades of Devin Townsend". I know the OP requests not having multiple songs linked, but frankly, the only way to properly present this man's music is by sampling his full range.
His style is definitely an acquired taste, but to those who are into him, it's not uncommon to see him referred to as "a mad musical genius". Or, as an article once put it, "everything he touches turns to awesome". Being a big fan of his myself, I have to agree.
Anyway! Enough intro... Here's 4 songs that I think represent his overall range... though there are certainly shades in-between even these.
3. "Triumph", from 'Synchestra' - This is one of the key songs that got me hooked on his music. The dynamic range of this song is awesome, IMO. Steve Vai features on this song, playing the solo from about 5:15 on 'til about the end of the song. Can't really find a good quality version of this on YT :-/.
5. "Almost Again" - from "The New Black". This one hearkens back to Dev's Strapping Young Lad days. Relentlessly intense, but still melodic.... Video is pretty wicked, too.

Don't have time to watch at the moment, but just needed to say....
"The point of departure Is not to return"
One of my favorite albums
Anything can happen!
Heheh right on. Your forum name is something of a give-away too :-p.
Hold Your Fire is the one I "grew up with". I first got into them with Signals (I was in 4th grade at the time o.o;), but I think HYF is the first one where I was old enough to really appreciate and understand what they were doing and, especially, Neil's lyrics. He's since gone on to become my single favorite lyricist. He also inspired me to start playing the drums back then (who hasn't he inspired to play the drums... lol). 'Second Nature' is one of my favorite songs from HYF.
Incidentally, Devin Townsend is a fellow Canadian to Rush. Though he's from the Vancouver area.
What is it with Canada and talented musicians?

Adult Contemporary / Jazz. Released in 1979
The funky base rythymn is used in many other songs. By the time you reach 3:24 you will become familiar with this song forever.

"overlord" by skinless
some of the heaviest, most brutal music i have ever heard, even by death metal standards
the struggle to free myself from restraints becomes my very shackles
"overlord" by skinless - First time I've heard that one. And (no offense) probably the last Death Metal's not my thing.
Steve Vai - I don't know. I mean, Ralph Macheo kiciked his ass in Crossroads - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27oKgNUfWFI

Sade is one of those artists who falls into that strange category on my MP3 player - you'd go from Beastie Boys and Metallica to Sade. Catches people off guard alot of times Yeah, she has class, not like the chicks singing today!!
Speaking of the contrast... what about some Queensryche:

Geoff Tate is a hell of a vocalist!
i've never gotten into queensryche. as for sade, i could listen to her all day long. i've been reading more comments comparing her to beyonce. beyonce cannot be compared to sade! sade has actual vocal talent and doesn't need to act like a hoe in order to sell records. if i ever get a chance to see her live. i'm totally going, and i had better take an attractive woman with me.
sidenote: i just moved to the pacific-northwest from scottsdale. i arrived here yesterday morning.

C-Lite - "No Tombstone" Ft. Sheena Lee
Strong lyrics, a real meaning. Try to understand. Rap is not for everyone (as every other type of music), but hey lets try to expand our horizons. Give it a try.
BTW the music starts only at 1:15 mark.
Of course, they can all take a lesson from this woman... (and it was an awesome movie too!)

PS - I used to live in Phoenix, after moving from NY. Sort of the opposite effect you're experiencing

I'll go from mellow to heavy.
1. "Terminal", from the album "Ki".

2. "Coast", also fromt he album "Ki".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v_T-LM3VYpE
3. "Triumph", from 'Synchestra' - This is one of the key songs that got me hooked on his music. The dynamic range of this song is awesome, IMO. Steve Vai features on this song, playing the solo from about 5:15 on 'til about the end of the song. Can't really find a good quality version of this on YT :-/.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc2dsNQX4Tw
4. "Universe In A Ball!" - from 'Addicted' - "Are we all we're meant to be when we're home, boy? Although we've been wandering, we are home, boy!"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDKZ19R73sw
5. "Almost Again" - from "The New Black". This one hearkens back to Dev's Strapping Young Lad days. Relentlessly intense, but still melodic.... Video is pretty wicked, too.

Again... so many other examples I could link. I had trouble picking just 5 lol.
Anyway... enjoy!
