While I respect your opinion... I feel threads like these end up doing more damage than good.
doubtful. not sure what you mean by more damage than good. I mean I didn't make a commercial saying "We're not in Azeroth anymore."
I think with all the hate that's been directed at the game, some light shown on what the game excels at is a good thing, instead of focusing on what it's not. People have gotten a chance to check the game out with low expectations and it's surprised them. Considering this is the Rift board, I feel it's appropriate. I don't know of anyone who says this game is the second coming of MMOs.
Maybe it's me, but I can't understand why people take such personal offense if someone likes a game they don't like, or if someone dislikes a game they like.
God forbid someone has fun! I'm now going to try to convince you, that you didn't have fun.

You know what? I wish this had been my OP. You put it much better than me. Thank You.
On a serious note: What is the bare minimum "I'm going to try and get away with it" pc anyone used for the betas? I have played Warcraft and Aion with my brother and nephew because that is basically the only games they know their pc's can handle. I'm wanting to move over to Rift and I don't see them upgrading computers before March.

They can play Aion? I think they're good. Might have to go mid to low settings though.

Contrary to what OP said I've found this game utterly dire. I've been in all 4 betas but only managed to force myself to play through 3 afternoons. I don't dig the extremaly one dimensional lore which is very limiting RP-wise, graphics are rather sub par and the character customization is lacking.
But the most importantly the game just doesn't feel as solid as LoTRO or WoW just to use similar games for comparison. For example melee combat feels very siff, unrealistic and just not right. I have no idea whether it's an engine, AI or animation thing and whether it can be fixed. I know that Warhammer Online still suffers from the same problem and that still prevents me from playing it even though I've been a WFB fanatic for the past 10+ years.

I guess I can see how the character background is limited by the fact that all players are 'Ascended', but I think there's a good deal of room to forge your own personality and story within that context. Still, I'll concede it doesn't offer the freedom of back story that some people might want. I agree that it would be nice to see more visual options for characters. In terms of character abilities, I think the game excels, but in the artistic department, I'd love to see some more sliders and options at character creation. I think you can get about as much variation as, to use your examples, WoW or LOTRO, but not on a par with some other games out there, like AoC or STO, which both have very robust appearance options, and with which I have experience.
As for the game feeling solid, it's important to remember that when people compare a new game to WoW, they are comparing something still in beta to a game that has been out, updated, tweaked, and(according to the ads I see on tv lately) totally reworked over the course of years. I played in the most recent beta, and had a great time. I didn't honestly do a lot of melee, so I'm not sure how that experience is. I found the spell animations to be solid, however, and found the combat to be as engaging as most other games I've played.
Don't attack me, thinking I'm wrong. Rift the MMO by Trion has NO connection to RIFT by palladium books. I would tell you to get YOUR info up to date, but I won't because I choose to take the higher road.
I don't know about you but I played through CB4 and had a blast. I got punted out just after finishing up the last event that led into the end of the beta period. I felt that I wanted to play more of it, it was fun and the community I was involved with felt the same.
I had joined one of the largest guilds on the Belmont server and we all felt the same: we were having a blast and wanted more.
These are basic responses as a gamer that lead me to believe I am enjoying something. I listen to my basic responses. For example: am I hungry? Yes. Eat food... yummy! Will I eat this food again? Yes. Info filed and move along with my day.
Thats how I feel about Rift. That makes me a fanboy? No. Does it make me a customer for Trion? Yes.

For me, Rift sounds like a really nice game. I've never played World of Warcraft, and sometimes I hope I never will, so I really can't compare Rift to another game with amazing graphics.
Unfortunately, I was invited to beta 4 and downloaded it, but when I went to update it so I could play there was a problem and the client couldn't update. Now the beta is finished and I still can't figure out what went wrong.
But from what I can gather and what I see in reviews, trailers, images and videos, this game is going to be amazing. Word spreads quickly, and even though a lot of people say this game is going to be an EPIC FAIL, a shitload of people pre-ordered and a shitload more are waiting for the official release (Please excuse my language). Anyone who says the game will fail just doesn't want their petty little World of Warcraft playerbase to be cut in half.

No, as in I partied with a few of their members and after they got to know me a little bit I asked if I could "join" the guild. After a few moments of deliberation, the invite was sent, I pressed OK! and "joined" their guild.
I was a bit concerned about invasions from the middle of beta 1 regardless of all the words I heard saying it was due to population. That was until beta 4. I have discovered when stumbling upon a foothold with 2-3 elite invasions loitering about having tea, if I leave and return a bit later I'll usually find all the invasions have vanished leaving the foothold and 2-4 normal monsters. As for the invasions themselves I saw for the first time at about 1am monday morning my first invasion composed of completely normal mobs in stonefield. Almost surreal discovering that I can in fact solo invasions when they aren't insane from zone population.

lol I love this "response is over-whelming positive" No its not. Have you been in all the betas? Its IN GAME where you read "WARHAMMER clone, feeling, AION". But anything I say is worthless. You cant talk to a FAN that KNOWS the game is AWESOME! Pffft People say the same crap about almost all new MMOS. Remember warhammer? How about AION? Well DUH RIFT is going to be better LOL..
Like I said if you were in beta..all of them you notice no matter extra servers or not .. the last beta there were even less players. The start of the game is a blast but what you find is what you do at level 9 your doing at level 15-20.. it goes on.. there is nothing to keep you ..nothing ..NOTHING to keep you wanting to play. The OP leaves out what people IN GAME have said.
If you can try the beta go for it. Buy the game when it launchs and see for your self. For ME.. I see NO..NONE WOW clone. But the feeling of WARHAMMER lol people say this so much in chat.. you really get that feeling. For ME I dont like killing alot and getting not greens .. I ..ME.. dont like just getting my armor from the vender. I dont like looking like everyone else. So far both sides ware the same. Same classes. And with what 8 trees.. you think its going to be EASY to get PVP working good?
But its just a game. Try it .. you get 30 days free. For me its not worht $15 a month lol but what is?

Uhuh. This game has a lot of resemblence with Warhammer Online when it comes to Public Quests aka rifts in RIFT. And there it already stops.
Still RIFTS are much more dynamic and constantly opening up on different locations. Add in the invasions, it trully becomes dynamic events.
In Warhammer Online everything was static. The whole PVE was highly underdeveloped and one big Borefest! Not to mention that litterly every dungeon was bugged to hell! And stayed that way for months on end unfixed!
Not to mention that the only thing that was somewhat polished and working, were Scenarios. And that was exactly what everyone end up doing 24/7.
You know what RIFT has (already in Beta!!), compared to the games you mentioned? POLISH!
It's just feels so good as a breath of fresh air to be in a Beta with a game that already feels really polished! The game just plays really well.
And for that alone me and my gf pre-ordered. Especially my gf is having a blast in the Beta events.
And the comment about everyone looking the same. Well, no one has bothered yet playing around with the diferent dying options. So we still have to see how that turns out to be.
I don't know about you but I played through CB4 and had a blast. I got punted out just after finishing up the last event that led into the end of the beta period. I felt that I wanted to play more of it, it was fun and the community I was involved with felt the same.

lol I love this "response is over-whelming positive" No its not. Have you been in all the betas? Its IN GAME where you read "WARHAMMER clone, feeling, AION". But anything I say is worthless.
I was only in this last beta, number 4, but I agree that I heard a lot of people complaining about what a WoW/WAR/etc clone the game is. The thing is, that I saw a lot of the same people saying that, all weekend, every time I was in the game.
When EQ2 was still pretty new, and WoW was as well, I was running around the Commonlands, and a person in the zone chat was going on and on about how much better WoW was. Everything about it was better than EQ2, so this person seemed to believe. They hated EQ2 and thought is sucked. Of course, with WoW up and running, he was in EQ2. If it was so horrible, why wasn't he logged into WoW?
Now, in this example, both games cost the same. There's a chance that people get into betas simply because they're free, even if they aren't into the game.
That said, if the game is that bad, why are these same people playing around lunch time, and still in game 12 hours later, and on again the next day, almost all day? Are they too poor to pay Blizzard, or some other publisher, $15 a month? Surely they have some other games that are free they could play, if truly Rift is so horrible. Just browse the games list on this site, there are a ton of free-to-play games out there, many quite popular.
I think the people who complain are often just trolling, trying to get attention, or(at worst) doing something along the lines of guerilla marketing. I certainly feel that way about the above mentioned EQ2 bashing EQ2 player.
Yes, the truth is coming to light. I attended the CB4 and it immediately reminded me of a heavily advertised candy store:
1. You see this amazing ad for this great new candy store and being the sweet tooth that you are you decide to try it out.
2. You enter the candy store and are confronted with an array of brightly wrapped candies, all very enticing, with the promise of new flavours.
3. You decide to purchase a selection of said candy, rush home and expectantly unwrap one waiting for that first taste of something new..
4. Suddenly you realise you have tasted this candy before. But no! This cannot be! The ad said "Try our NEW candy with incredible new flavours"
5. You frantically start opening more candy only to discover at the end that there is nothing new with this candy at all. In fact, the candy you were previously buying was better.
It's the same everywhere. It's just ignorance and irony at it's best.
In every MMO to date you see people complaining in chats (even in games that are up and running longer than WoW) about how it's a WoW clone and how much better WoW is.
What I do not understand is. Just like you said. If WoW is so much better. Why do they bother even trying these MMO's and aren't they playing WoW instead?
I can't help but notice that these sad individuals are nothing but trolls, bored and frustrated of WoW and taking it all out in other MMO's.
Just like SWG vets taking it out on every SOE game day in day out up till this day.
There seems to be a hell lot of frustrated people in the MMO community. /shrug

I guess I can see how the character background is limited by the fact that all players are 'Ascended', but I think there's a good deal of room to forge your own personality and story within that context. I wouldnt say anything is new about Rift but thats really what I found I liked most about it.
Its a polished MMO with a few tweaks and improvements.
Rift has so far proven to be a fun and engaging game for me. It has some surprising depths that really got me interested, especially the soul system.
Not everyone will like it, but for this humble person, I recommend giving it a look, you may find yourself enjoying it.
Except for the Soul System :P that's really what piqued my interest from the start.
