My only gripe with the review is he leaves out the part where they have said repeatedly that they do not want to make a game where you are grinding levels. That is why you can rush to the max level but still have stuff to do. I have never said the OP was wrong just had some questions about his 4-5 months and his level 30's since everyone I played with didn't get to 30 till they opened it up right before they closed the beta.
The original poster details why he thinks the endgame is lacking depth and quantity. Regardless of wether he pointed out the speed of leveling was intentional or not. That is sort of a minor point when looking at his opinion that the extremely quick leveling leads to very limited end game.
The way I look at reviews is this...If a reviewer really knew what they were talking about, they would have the title game designer or at least QA. This poster doesn't even have the title of editor. So the review is worth piss in a bottle.
As far as MMO's dying...UO has been dying for 12 years yet they still update content so...
DCUO quality...I enjoyed it. I bought it. I will keep enjoying it. Pretty much all I care about.
Comic Book MMO's...Will never be huge. They are niche b/c the genre is niche. Its not really an environment suited for MMO's.
Stop trying to make DCUO into CO or COX. its not those games. The developers said years ago that they don't want to repeat those games. If you want to play those games, why even bother playing DCUO one time. Why bother posting? Waste of your time. Go play those games. Let DCUO be DCUO.
Waiting for DCUO going free 2 play...wth? Cash shops are not the answer.

Because only great game designers can write great reviews.. wait, what?
I hate to break it to you but game design is not the same as journalism. By your own rules, your comments about the game would be worthless as well.
A review is an opinion, nothing more. Sometimes it's an uninformed opinion, sometimes it's the opinion of someone who's studied the subject for years. Different people like different things, so take a look at what he's specifically saying he liked and disliked, and see if those are things you think you would like. A review is also not the final seal of approval on the success of a game, as much as some people might tell you it is.
The OP is simply trying to give us an honest look at the game through his eyes. If you don't agree, that's fine, but don't tell him his opinion is worthless, because your opinion is worth the same.
What I played of the beta, I see where he was coming with some of his comments. (The tutorial sucked any time after the first, and I feel the UI is pretty clunky). I agreed with some points, didn't agree with others. Frankly the OPs review is just as good as the launch preview from this site where they slap a "buy it" banner at the bottom (surprise).

Ok guys, I know the game just came out today, I understand that, but I have been in the PC and PS3 beta for 4-5 months now so I know this game pretty well. I am a comic book nerd, I love DC Comics and wanted this game to be the greatest MMO in the world....but its not. DC Universe does not revolutionize the MMO genre in any way shape or form, though the action gameplay is cool it is more like MMO gameplay with an action disguise. Heres the bullet points:
I also beta'd both PC & PS3 and I'll comment on each section. I mainly PC game so I'll focus on this.
Gameplay: The gameplay is very fun, at first anyways, and it does add a new twist to MMOs, the action gameplay isnt quite as action oriented as I would have liked, its actually more like 2 buttons are action oriented and the rest are traditional MMO. The combo's are waaay to easy to pull off and if they had took the time to add some complicated ones in there it would have given more action players something to look foward to. Plus the game plays awkward with the keyboard and mouse, much better and more natural with a controller. 5/10
If you are a PC gamer stick with the mouse/keyboard, I don't care what anyone says. The combat is fluid and unlike anything you've seen in an mmo. You will feel like you are beating the living crap out of your enemies for the first time in your gaming career. 8/10
Graphics: I never saw a problem with the graphics, if you dont have a great computer you might have to run it pretty low but the graphics are very good for any computer game. 9/10
This is an easy 10/10 - The OP said "very good" but that's putting it mildly. Stand on top of any building and look out over Gotham or Metropolis with the settings turned up. Makes AoC look like an 80s atari game. It's that good. Of course I am running it 1920x1080 on a 23" screen with new hardware.
Story: The story is a DC Universe comic story, it has many alternative story lines but basically you were given powers and now have to try and save the world from a super computer named Brainiac. 7/10
Engaging and fun. Voice acting is top notch! 9/10
Tutorial: The tutorial is exciting to play through the first time because it really explains the story well, the problem is the tutorial takes about half an hour no matter how good of a player you are (because of cutscenes) and for every character you make you have to hear the same lines over and over again. The tutorial starts off promising but if they had taken the time to add in a skip option it would make this game alot better, by my second character I just didnt want to make anymore because of the tutorial. 2/10
For a tutorial it's excellent and does what it's supposed to do. Don't take away points because you can't skip it.... but I wish you could skip it... 8/10
Quests: The quests are called "episodes" in this game, and at first they are very exciting to do, but than I realized they are all the same. You will have to kill 15 of an enemy, than get 10 of an item and 5 of another item (so kill 15 more of a different enemy) than go to an inside mission and defeat a boss. EVERY SINGLE episode follows this formula, while its a good thing that you probably wont run out of episodes but once or twice the episodes are to much alike to be interesting. If they would have thrown in some get accross the city and disarm the bomb with a time limit or something like that it would have added variety, but its like they didnt even try when designing the episodes, the stories can be interesting but its the same objective on every single one. 2/10
Again the OP is dramatizing a bit but there is repetition to be found. Take what he said and dial it down a couple notches. 6/10
Character Customization: This one is hard to write about....the initial character creation is not bad...but it isnt near what we have seen from City of Heroes, Champions Online, Aion and such. You cant customize height and there are only 6 powers to choose from! There are 10 weapons, but 4 of them are useless and most of them are ones you want on 1 character but wont want to try again. Any costume piece you pick up gets added to looks you can go back to again which is cool (i believe we saw a similar system in Everquest?) but from the beginning you cant get your character looking how you want most of the time. The lack of options initially and throughout the game make customization mediocre compared to other games. 4/10
With graphics like this how can you complain? You have to earn a portion of your clothing collection in game but there is plenty in creation. Plus you can change your colors anytime! 8/10
Replay Value: Ok guys, let me warn anyone who has not played this game that even for casual players getting to lvl 30 (max level) takes only about a week or so, I have seen hardcore players get it in a day. 1/10
Easily the biggest flaw of the game but not a 1/10 flaw for God's sake! Needs more content without a doubt. Oh and if you have a significant other, a career and do other things in life besides game than you will not hit 30 in a week or in a day.... but most teenage gamers don't yet realize this... ahhh I wish it was 1989 again... 6/10
Verdict: Well guys, this game has many flaws and is not what I, or alot of people thought it would be. The tutorial is a pain to do after the first or second time and when you get to max level there is NOTHING to do. There are like 3 raids you can do, but you do the raids for armor so you can raid. And you PvP....for armor....so you can raid. But they dont give you hardly any raids to do...see the issue? This game will last probably anyone the free month, some people claim its the best game ever and they will play it forever, but in the MMO world if it takes a hardcore player a week to get to max level the game is considered easy, if it takes them a day it is considered laughable. I think the developers worked very hard on the city and getting the voice actors to do the voice's, but not on what players want. The gameplay is a little action, alot of what we have seen over and over again. If your looking for a new MMO home, you wont find it here, in fact after playing for a couple of months I am not getting it, and I could have concluded that after the first month. The developers when they do play the game leave as soon as you find out who they are, the gameplay is mediocre along with the character creation, episodes are repetative and there is a lack of any appeal unless you are a hardcore DC Comics fan (which I am a huuge fan of) but even than its hard to stay with this game. The first month people will probably give it 10/10, but in truth is more like a 4/10
Just try the game out for yourself. I'll probably keep Rift as my main and jump in and out of DCU. Despite it's flaws DCU will go down as the first of the next generation of mmos and it's a bold albeit risky step but someone has to do it. Try a buddy's copy before you buy. Personally I'm happy with my $50 spent.
Man this gets old. Has ANYONE here played in any other MMO beta? Well if you did was it EASY to level? Ok lets take the MMO RIFT. Did you know you can get to level 20 in a few hours. OMG the game now sucks. LOL THEY ALL DO THIS!. Did you know you kill this kill that.. pick up this pick up that. OMG you do the same thing at LEVEL 20. And HAHA in WORLD OF WARCRAFT your not doing this at 10-20-40-80? What mmo you dont do this?
Dude PLAY the LIVE version then come back and cry how you dont like it. Dont use the word HONEST when you say in the same line "game that might have been" .. wow
People try the game.. 30 days free. If you dont like it dont play anymore. But to not play ANY mmo because someone crys how they didnt like it IN BETA.. BETA should say it all. Wait about 3-6 months then look at the game.. lol
The problem is he based everything off his supposed "4-5" months in beta. Last I checked beta hadn't been going on for 4-5 months not even early beta maybe 3months is more of what you are looking for referring to the OP. He already played the live version didn't you read his post? I mean it is obvious he has thuroughly played ever aspect of the game and then formulated his extensive review based on the research he has done.
The review IS accurate for the level 1-20. Anyone who is not blinded by fanboyism can tell that. The game IS NOT significantly different than it was from end of beta.
The only thing that could possibly be disputed the end game content and from what people say his account is accurate.
If it is not please explain why the description of the raids are inaccurate.
The guy did not even get into the issues of the serious balance problems and stability/crashing issues there were introduced at end of beta. He could have easily trashed it more.
The trashing of this review is pathetic. Fanboyism and an apologeia for non-critical thinking at its worst. Try it out because its 30 days free? Are you serious? You gotta spend $50-60. You have to base it on release when you have a recent open Beta? Gimme a break.
The quests are extremely formulaic anyone saying otherwise is simply lying. Yet people want to bash him for saying the truth? Get a grip.
The proper response is to mention that the boss fight at the end of each "episode" tends to be rather intersting and that for comic the boss fight is where its at anyway.
Ridicule and ad hominen over substance that is all you got. The review is neagative but even handed and fairly accurate. Stop being little bitches about it.
Game was pushed back in November they were in Closed Beta by then. There were multiple rounds of beta. Some guy doesn't remember exactly how long or when he got in, who frigging cares?
Well obviously he must be lying even though absolutely any one who played beta knows that his account is 80% accurate even if biased in a way they may not agree with.
First I never said he was inacurate or lying I simply do not remember the beta starting 4-5months ago. I was in early beta a friend was in and as far as I could tell on the PC only about 20 of us and not one of us was able to get to 30 till the end of beta. I love how people who find a problem with a post or thread immediatly get the label of "fanboy" . So when those that call others "fanboys" or "fanboyism" what should we call you "nerds united"?
Not to mention his "4-5 months" of experience somehow changing to "I got in like the beginning of December, took me about a week and a half to get 30 on the PvP server.". Maybe youre on some strange calendar im not aware of or something, but pretty sure December was 1 month ago.

The original poster said he got into the PS3 beta in december, becaust that is when the PS3 beta started.
I have played the game for 3 hours only yesterday and what I could observe is almost the same (except his ratings of course! His concerns are valid though).
What puts me in doubt is, why would you play the game for 4-5 months in Beta phase, if you think the game play is not that great?
A person would never do that. Sorry OP but I do not believe what you are saying. You can be right in most ways but you have some secret agenda in your book.

Some people play beta for the reason betas are for....testing and bug catching. I played much longer on the beta as well than I would have otherwise because I was doing feedback and bug report. That is what I was ASKED to do as part of beta testing. So no, I am not suprised he played that long.
I would have been if it had been a "try before you buy" program.
LOL @ all the naive / retard fanboys who think his beta experience isn't valid because he hasn't played the live version. The live verison is the same as the beta version! It's not like they suddenly added a bunch of content in the handful of days between the beta and launch. This game is a skeleton of a mmo at best. The OP is trying to save you some money, but if you are too dumb to see that go ahead and waste your cash on this single player mmo with 2 weeks of content.
Those disagreeing either did not play beta, played 5-10 levels at most...or they like grinding repetitive garbage for a game.
Just that simple.
Regardless of opinion, try the game if you can get a buddy key. I would NOT recommend paying 50 bucks for it.
You will just wish you had your money back. But if your too dense to take advice spend your money and learn for yourself.

i wished that i've seen this before paying $80 sgd on this. i bought the PS3 version thinking that it should be better in terms of graphics and sound but i was sorely disappointed. videos were lagging and had voice-syncing issues. graphics were less-than-stellar.
to be fair though, this is based on my first 15 minutes gameplay, but the graphics (or lack thereof) is really a disappointment for me. and if i have known (my fault again, i should probably do more research before plonking down my credit card) that the graphics wasnt as good as i expected, i wouldn't be so disappointed. so it's really a matter of adjusting one's expectation right?
What I don't understand is how someone can stick around a game for 5 months, and then give it a 4/10. Just cognitive dissonance there.
Obviously you enjoyed yourself, and now just because your cycle with the game has ended, you trash it?
I guess if the only criteria is that the games makes you want to play it forever, then 4/10 is warranted.
I do believe this is your honest opinion, as in you honestly believe it. But you need to try to step back and understand fairness and objectivity, which has little to do with honesty.
As it is, this opinion is trash for anyone trying to find a fun game to play, unless the only criteria is somehow find a game that is fun forever.

He claims people will be 30 pretty soon. You claim.. I don't know, what are you claiming in your rant? I know you were saying all MMOs let you level easy in beta, but you didn't address the issue of many people hitting cap within two weeks after a game's launch.
That is troubling by any standard for a launch, that even casuals can beat most of your content before the first month is out.
