The short answer is... Rift uses GameBryo. Its an out dated and aged engine which gets a lot of well deserved hate. As far as PvP goes between the games, WAR does it better so far. PvE is about the same in my eyes, though WAR's PQ's had more scripting involved than Rifts PQ Rifts. What Rift does better is itemization, and class customization.
Players fighting for territory over a map is better than NPCs spawning and running down the same tracks in my opinion.
I dont think Rift is very good at all, but Im sure you will hear opposing posts soon enough. Basically all you need to know is that War and Rift use the same engine and visual approach with the said engine. They both suffer from the same problems the engine is known for.
If you want a real next gen title, look out for games using Unreal or CryEngine.

Just to provide more info on the game engine, since you seem to have such an issue with it based on this and other posts, it is not quite as simple as you state it.
Why do people always want to simplify to sound bites? Read a good review. Or better yet, play it, as much of an mmo experience is subjective.
It’s not really about how much the UI, crafting, combat etc is like other games, it’s about how much you enjoy the combined result. You don’t evaluate the worth of your cat or best friend by dissecting them and comparing the parts to other species. At least I hope you don’t.
I came to this game very sceptical and aware of the state of the mmo world. Once I stopped comparing the font, quest hubs, hot keys to WoW, AION, LOTRO etc, I found I was really enjoying the game, as the mixture of dynamic and static PvE and good community really made me want to stay in that world. There comes a time as a player, not a perpetual critic or reviewer to stop the reductive analysis and actually play the game.

Let me clairify for you.
First, different versions of Unreal and CryEngine exist. Did you think I wasnt talking about the lastest version? If so why would you think that logically? Unreal 3 & CryEngine 3.
Second, the OP was talking aboug VISUALS.... Mortal Online is under developed, buggy, and poorly designed. What does that have to do with visual capability? Can you even answer that?

perhaps you should pick up a thing called hooked-on-phonics?

nowhere in that post do i see "visuals".
Key word here starts with L and ends with OOKS.
If I were to say "That Mazda looks like a Honda Civic". Can you tell me, logically, what element I am referring to?
Perhaps you should think first before responding. Its only fair. You think before responding, and I promise to do the same in return.

"Rift: Planes of Telara is known to be using a 'heavily modified' version 2.6 of the Gamebryo engine"
Do you even know what that means? Every company can say "heavily modified version of X engine" but it doesnt mean anything.
The only thing thats modified is the framework for how the servers work. Rift is using both toolset and complete engine package.
Yes, I know what it means. Your oversimplification alluding that they are using the exact same engine that War used is the issue. Do you even know what it means? (see, I can insinuate you are an idiot also)

Welcome to the most recent and most hated game on mmorpg.com I guess.
Rift is an amalgamation of UO, EQ, Asherons Call, WoW, WAR, does it very well, is most complete even in its' pre-release state than any other previous mmos, which has leaned on the excuse of "new", "just launched", "it's early yet", "we promise", "we're improving".
Rift is a classic fantasy mmo but offering a nice departure from the 'solo-centric' generic and static quests as a 'mainstay' of pve content, which are not massively-multiplayer synergistic, which are community fracturing, and though they are there as story-archs and status-quo game-play elements, its' interuppted and interlaced with server-focused, on-going dynamic events that take a community or team of players to participate in during real-time to prevent; kind of ushering in a broader-scope of massively-multiplayer public content and open-world dynamic game-play.
So, I'm dumbfounded at the reactions....well maybe not really, but its intersting to watch.

There is a difference actually. Gamebryo hasnt changed much over the years. MMORPGs and Single player games are approached differently, especially when it comes to dealing with the processing budget between projects.
Let me put it this way, Gamebryo is so outdated that the company that developed WENT UNDER less than a month ago.
I highly recommend you follow whats going on in the industry and study up on the differences between game engines and how they differ. The difference between Unreal 2 and Unreal 3 is vast. Same with CryEngine. It is also why the companies behind them are doing so well.
Nice try though. Again modification for game engine doesnt mean a complete overhaul. There are always limitations. In Rifts case its merely a frame work change for the networking end. You wont see or feel any difference as the player.
From videos I've seen it looks like the two games had a baby and Rift was born. Does this at all equate to how the game actually is?
I haven't spent much time in WoW, and it was long ago, so I don't know what it's like. I played WAR when it came out, and had a good time, but the game was too buggy, and the issues seems to become worse at higher levels, so most everyone I know left.
I'd say the rifts are similar to the PQ in WAR, but aren't sitting static in one spot. They may have only certain places where they can spawn, I'm not sure, but you don't know when they'll spawn there. This makes them more interesting to me. Also, it was pretty easy to ignore the PQ, so people often seemed to ignore them, which was a bummer if you enjoyed doing them. The fact that rifts can spawn invasions that will run around killing quest-hub NPCs and players alike, means you can't really ignore them. In the recent beta event, I felt like it brought people together into a better feeling of community.
The class options are truly awesome in this game, and one of the things I like the most. You really feel like you can play the exact type of character you want to play.
Visually, I think it looks better than either game you mentioned. I guess it's based on the same basic engine as WAR? I don't follow such things, but after looking at some screens on the WAR site to make sure I remembered it correctly, I stand by the assertion that Rift looks better. If you hit the Rift site, there are a lot of screen shots that I think give a idea of the visuals. Of course, eye of the beholder and all, but I like them.
Most of all, I had a lot of fun playing it, which is all I really care about at the end of the day.
I wouldnt waste your time on Rabenwolf, hes just here to hate.
As for the WoW meets WAR, its not really. I mean there are WAR elements but they are better executed in Rift. For the most part the games have little in common or were even supposed too. Definitely has a lot of similarity with WoW though.

Listen to this man. He speaks the truth.
As for the Rifts = war pq thing. You really cant say enough on how much better the rifts are. They will take over quest hubs and travel down roads and kill you. Roads are safe in most MMOs. Not here. Never seen a pq do that.
Kings and Sons of God Travel on their way from here Calming restless mobs Easing all of their, all of their fear Strange times are here.

Yes thats clearly why I am here, I mean, It must be true because you say so right? I find it ironic that the majority of your posts here are attacks against those who have anything unfavorable to say about Rift, even if it includes positive areas as well.
Instead of attempting to belittle a specific user, why not counter argue their points instead? It seems like if you cannot do that, then why bother to respond at all much less take your post seriously?

How is that ironic . .?
The fact is I've only spoken out against two posters, both of which are going out of their way to hate on Rift. While most of the things you personally post are not untrue, you are deliberately making them sound as negative as possible. The reason I dont "counter" your idiocy is simply because its not worth my time, if someone passes on Rift because of what you (or anyone else) say its not my problem.

Wow dude. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt because you can talk some good BS, but this? You are completely wrong on this.
Here's the thing. To test out prototypes companies will license engines to test out theory and ideas in the developmental stage. In Rift's case they choose Gamebyro. Guess what, there's little to no code of the Gamebyro left in Rift. Scott Hartsman said it himself verbatim. So you either don't know what you're talking about and are jumping to conclusions because you heard they were working with Gamebyro or Hartsman is lying. They built their game from the ground up with their own code. Replacing more and more of the Gamebryo as they realized (as you pointed out) it couldn't hold up to what they wanted to do. Do you really think that the mass invasions could be pulled off if Gamebryo was really that integrated into Rift? Seriously? My god just think if Mythic tried to do something like that with WAR.
spent about an hour reading up on engines to try and understand some of the references here but im still confused....
(mostly to you Raben)
Consensus generally is Gamebryo is rubbish. However, when I look at the gamebryo portfolio they have a lot of really great games. I thought Rift had weak character animations but overall the graphics and effects were visually strong and better than nearly every other MMO out today. The mechanics were all there and the controls seemed smooth. Rift is good, not great... dunno if I'll buy so im here.
I guess I'm just confused why i should be concerned about the engine since I'm not developing and the beta seemed smooth.
To answer your question as it is a subjective question depending on one's point of view - yes it is like the two had a kid with the similarities in the UI, PvE, PvP looking at it on paper and in various screenshots. There are differences in obvious cases as well though such as story/lore, the world, and the Rift system (it is dynamic to a certain extent as the size of invasions and rifts will depend on how many players are in the area).
In the end unless you trust the opinions of someone you do not know, try it for yourself and see what you think! It's not very buggy, well polished, and a mix of a lot of previous concepts with some new stuff thrown in. IT MAY NOT BE FOR EVERYONE, but that is one's opinion. In all, the game is not a bad game because of the reasons stated above - I'm not saying everyone should like it because that is up to the individual to decide. To put it simply: it works. which is more than I can say for a lot of previous games that have launched since WoW and have tanked miserably.

Yes, on developer forums they don't like gamebryo when compared to cryengine and some of the cool features that make life a load easier to use and work with. However, when I look at the gamebryo portfolio they have a lot of really great games. I thought Rift had weak character animations but overall the graphics and effects were visually strong and better than nearly every other MMO out today. Because the engine is one thing to attack about a game to show how bad said game is. When games are made using unreal people talk smack about unreal (if they dont like the game) or sing its praises (if they like the game).
By hearing that Rift used the GameBryo engine in it5s developement, people automatically started swinging the 'Looks Like WAR' flags.
I tend to ignore those people because 90% of them are just afraid a game is going to somehow hurt their game (pulling subs away or maybe their friends all plan to leave for it but they cant follow because they can't afford the game or a PC made in the last 5 years to run it properly...).
The game looks nothing like WAR (played the game and it it looks nothing alike) although it does borrow heavily from multiple MMOs, which isnt a bad thing.
Trust me, if the game was made using say Unreal 3.0, the same people would be complaining that it looks like game XYZ from 1998 and should have used the Cryengine because its better....
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

You shouldnt be concerned. Its one of those slight-of-hand misdirections in an attempy to mislead the reader into thinking the game isnt decent. /shrug

Please stop comparing games to WoW. Rift is its own IP. Just because it has random world events doesn't make it WAR.
Just because it has the fundamental building blocks of a fantasy MMORPG, doesnt mean its WoW.

Do you even know what that means? Every company can say "heavily modified version of X engine" but it doesnt mean anything.
The only thing thats modified is the framework for how the servers work. Rift is using both toolset and complete engine package.
I've only seen youtube videos...I have no idea what the game is like and hence why I asked the question. A QUESTION, not a STATEMENT. L2Webster's
Thank you for the feedback and why you feel the way you do. This is the sort of answer I was looking for.
perhaps you should pick up a thing called hooked-on-phonics?
"From videos I've seen it looks like the two games had a baby and Rift was born. Does this at all equate to how the game actually is?"
nowhere in that post do i see "visuals".
Key word here starts with L and ends with OOKS.
If I were to say "That Mazda looks like a Honda Civic". Can you tell me, logically, what element I am referring to?
Perhaps you should think first before responding. Its only fair. You think before responding, and I promise to do the same in return.
No problem. Glad it was what you were looking for.
Yes, I know what it means. Your oversimplification alluding that they are using the exact same engine that War used is the issue. Do you even know what it means? (see, I can insinuate you are an idiot also)
Different modified versions of GameBryo exist so whats you point? DAOC, Fallout3 and Epic Mickey use GameBryo and they look nothing like Rift. Has little to do with what engine you use and more to do with who's making the game...
"It would be awesome if you could duel your companion. Then you could solo pvp".--Thanes
They really are.

Kings and Sons of God
Travel on their way from here
Calming restless mobs
Easing all of their, all of their fear
Strange times are here.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
You shouldnt be concerned. Its one of those slight-of-hand misdirections in an attempy to mislead the reader into thinking the game isnt decent. /shrug
