Like one of the previous posters said, it's pretty simple to answer:
1) They're not greedy enough to want "unlimited" access for some content that they don't know is good to them or not. Or they're rich enough to know that they can spend more than a mere $15 on a game if find that game fun.
2) They're smart enough to not get on the hamster wheel that is MMOs, especially if the subscription fee obligates them to get their money's worth. Or they have a job that doesn't allow to 7 - 21 hours weekly to play a computer game.
A lot of career minded people I talk to will not waste $15 on a subscription for some silly online game. It's different than a subscription for cable as television is often enjoyed by multiple people so even if they personally don't enjoy it, someone in their household might. For the few of them that do pay a subscription (so far exclusively WoW), it is because they know people in real life that plays it and hence becomes a real life group activity.
For those that constantly spend $30-$70 box price for single player games, it's because each of those games is a new experience rather than the same old world/graphics/settings that is MMOs. It's like those that rather spend every weekend watching a new movie, it's usually a different movie each time.
They do kinda offer lot of content compared to other games, I paid 15€ for ME2 and got thought it in 2-3 days(ok I didn't do anything else than play apart from occasional GTAIV)
Still, 15€ is okay for one game, but quite too steep if you want to get multiple games. Best way to compare it is to do cost effectiveness one month of MMO against one game, likely a bargain one. So offer value some not... On both sides...
$15 a month for a game that's being developed, fixed, updated, patched, and content added is not bad at all. $15 a month for a game that's not being developed, has no future visions, no expansions, no updates/patches....now that's bad, and people have every right to complain.
Lately, people complain about $15 a month because more and more items that used to be included as a part of game's content patches are now being sold in online cash shops. So you are in fact being pulled to spend more than $15 a month, and you in return are getting less and less as they put more and more on cash shops.
So I'd say people have good reasons to complain majority of the times. Other times, well there are always people who really should be out working rather than worrying about playing games.
You don't pay 15 bucks a month for that. The 15 bucks are for running costs, nothing else.
The development are financed by box sale until the first expansion and then by sales of the expansion.
MMO companies do make a huge profit on monthly fees but for us players is it really not much money unless you pay for several or are a really poor student. It is the price of about 3 Guiness at my local pub.
It is the adding of RMT shops that pisses me off, most successful MMOs make huge sums of money and they still wants to milk out more of me. My boxes and monthly fees should cover all expenses. I don't really see why I wouldn't move to F2P or B2P then, the lack of RMT shops have been the reasons I prefer P2P MMOs for a long time.
It is however not money that made me choose to quit EQ2 and go back to GW, I got bored and GW is the game I have most fun in. And to be honest is GW as much patched as most P2P games, have no bugs unlike EQ2 and a lot of content.
I gladly pay 15 bucks a month to be rid of RMT shops.
For those that constantly spend $30-$70 box price for single player games, it's because each of those games is a new experience rather than the same old world/graphics/settings that is MMOs. It's like those that rather spend every weekend watching a new movie, it's usually a different movie each time.
I think it is somewhat different. You don't really always plan to buy a single palyer game, you have a bit too much money and are bored. Monthly fees is something you pay every month instead and that is something completely different.
It might not be much money but all monthly fees is usually something I stick in a big pile, including rent, electricity and so on. I can understand if people want to cut down that pile, Movie channels, MMO game and whatever else you pay monthly....
Question: Why do people complain about monthly sub MMOs
Answer: They don't think the box sale + sub cost justifies the amount of features and content in the game, especially when they are promised to be delivered post-launch. People are tired of feeling lied to. Consider that some disreputable companies (I'm looking at you, Cryptic) seem to staff their live subscription MMO with LESS people fixing bugs than many single player games do WITHOUT a subscription cost.
I don't bitch about sub games, I just rarely play them. When I do it's usually not for more than three or four months. It's kind of a cost/benefit sort of thing. Let's do the math:
To begin, I have to explain that I see things differently from the OP. Most people see $15 a month whereas I see $180 year. And that's without paying for the box and all the expansions. AND that's only for ONE game. So stick with that number. $180 to play one game for one year.
Next we have to look at the time issue. How much time am I going to be able to invest in this game? At most, I'm going to get about twenty hours a week or eighty hours a month. Most of the time, I get about half that.
From there I have to ask if I'm going to want to play this game for 80+ hours. Free trials make this decision really easy. If I can't get into the game within two weeks, then it isn't worth a sub. Even if I do like the game, I have to ask if I'm going to want to play this game AND ONLY this game for 80+ hours. MMORPGS are notoriously designed to be played to the exclusion of everything else. If there are other non-MMORPG games coming up over the next month then we have a no go.
When you look at the price/time thing and compare, you see that MMORPGs aren't really that big of a value. If I buy my stuff used off of, say... half.com, I'll be spending about $20 per game. So here's a breakdown of time by genre.
Single-player RPG: 30 – 100 hours
Typical action game: 8-10 hours
Sports games: roughly 960 hours before you have to buy next season's edition
RTS games: 20-40 hours
Fighting games, Racing games and multiplayer modes for all genres: Infinitely replayable provided that someone is still playing the game.
So for the price of one sub I can buy one single-player RPG a month, or two sports games, fighting games, or racing games a month. About the only place where the sub wins out is against typical racing games. But only on the PC. On consoles I can rent one action game a week for about five bucks a pop and still play out all the free time I have.
I know you were looking for something that might fight nicely on a bumper sticker, but reality is never that simple.
IMO I would rather pay the $15 a month for a mmo. I have yet to play a F2P that is not pay to win or have good quality like a decent P2P. I played LOTRO when it was P2P and loved it. Then they went F2P and i stopped playing it.
The sad part is that these people bitch an complain that they have to dish out money then head down to starbucks with their friends and drop 5 bucks on a tiny coffee. (In no way do i hate starbucks, I go their daily, but I dont complain about dishing money out for certain things)
Myself I spend around 20 bucks a day just on food while working. So 15 bucks a month is a joke. I think the only reason people complain now a days is that there is more younger people playing mmos then before. These young people are obviously to young to work, lazy, or just to cheap (i dunno).
Sub fees vary per usage. As a previous poster said, if they play multiple MMOs, that sub costs more vs the value they receive from it. If someone only plays a MMO occasionally on weekends a sub has much less value than MMO addicts that play 40+hours a week.
People have different ways of looking at money spent. Is it cost per day? Is it a This or That proposition? 3 months of subbing to a game is roughly the cost of a new single player game. (4 months if it's an EA or Activision title)
Honestly to me, a sub is a symbol, and the price as long as it is reasonable, makes little difference to me. The sub is me saying I'm willing to commit myself to playing a product.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

my answer to all whiners about needing to bay 15 bucks a month about moving pixels and what fraking reason you may come up with is GET A JOB ffs! or quit smoking save alot of money a month by doing that.
Incredibly long post explaining how someone thinks that people should pay more money for games just because food costs way more
LOLed so hard... you actually compare eating, which you know... you have to do because you will die simply put, with a fee for an MMORPG...
Now I'm gonna tell why people where I live, including myself, don't take the time to even consider paying monthly for an online game... It's because of piracy and f2p MMOs...
If you can buy and new released game as soon as it's cracked (which is close to the release date) for 2$ or more, depending on the number of CDs, in stores than why would you think about playing a game that forces you to pay a fee ,for which you can get like 5 or more games , monthly ...
And of course F2P (free 2 pay) games where you get a glimpse of the experience of a decent MMORPG for free ...
Why would I pay then ?
Im not a holyman and do download a game every now and then to, whit a excuse of being poor ( not going into details but I am actualy just above street living level :P ) But I know my action and know that its not someting to be proud off.
Anyway how dare you to to even consider Ilegal gaming (stealing) whit legaly playing / paying for any game/mmo. your saying becource you chose to be a thief you think the entire mmo bussiness should stop asking a fair prize for the service they offer.
$15 is nothing compared to the real prize of those stolen goods you have, F2P games a desent argument in some cases but if you need to buy anyting froma item shop you easely spent $10-15 a month. more most likely.
I hope for your own sake you stop umm .. LoLing? and start thinking before some local institution comes knocking on your door and fines you for few thoused bucks (or your mom if your still under aged)
Exactly! Also I find it funny that people are willing to pay 10€ for a movie that lasts less than 2 hours but hesitate to pay 15€ for a game you can play a whole month. That's a price of 3 pints of beer in my country, and no one seems to have problems with that.
You said exactly what I was thinking. I went yesterday to the movies with my wife. 30€ for transportation (no way I'm driving on a night out), 50 € for some chinese, 20 € for a few pints after the movie and babysitter for free. About 100 € for one evening. We could have instead made dinner at home for a few euros, downloaded a movie and sixpack for 5 euros more. Less than 10 € for the 'exact same content'.
We both could have bought three months subscription or a new game, but I still think it was worth it.
I prefer p2p, I don't trust f2p, some have good models, but they are subject to change, and it owuld suck to play a f2p game, and say you pay $5-10 a month under their shop to have things open to you, and then they decide to make it a vampire on your wallet, or pay to win, ect....I am just skeptical....I like to know what I will be paying to enjoy a game, to its full extent.

Out of all the troll comments that provide absolutely ZERO intellectual response or thought. This, in fact, is the MOST correct response on this entire thread.

We all know 15$ a month is nothing. The point is why all MMO's think they can charge 15$ a month ? I mean dont tell me it cost the same to run WOW with 11 millions subs vs Vanguard with 20K (just an example). Fact is i dont mind paying 15$ a month if the game is worth it, i just dont get why i should pay that price for all these other crappy MMO's.

Conversly, why should Blizzard charge $15 a month for World of Warcraft, when the games development budget and running costs don't even vaguely cost that much? And why should they charge $25 for a mount? Blizzard could charge half of what they charge now and STILL make a shit ton of money. Fact.
So, for $15 per MONTH, I get "unlimited" access to the game & all it's content (unless it's a Pay to Win game, then you DON'T).
That is true of games like Lineage 2, Asheron's Call and EVE Online. Not true of the majority of subscription MMOs where, on the average, there is an additional charge of 40-60 USD every12-18 months for the expansions. Subscription MMOs also often have a charge for the client.
Add to that the very valid argument that for many players, their first few months or even year are spent playing to get to the 'endgame'. Basically, the perception for many is that they are being charged to work toward the part they want to play.
For just three months of most subscription MMOs, 100% of the players spend about 80 USD or more. For jsut three months of most F2P MMOs, 85-90% of the players spend absolutely nothing. Considering the past two or three years of releases and the hundreds of MMOs that are available right now, it's not so much a matter of measuring cost per hour of fun over time, rather a comparison of significant cost vs zero cost to find out if it will be fun at all.

Yeh....I keep seeing people type that. Sure, I can afford it and apparently you can too.
But...with the economy the way it is, people losing jobs and houses, $15 is money that doesn't NEED to be spent on gaming.
Keep in mind that for some people, $10,000 is a drop in the bucket, some folks can pay for a new car in cash, and others barely have enough money to put gas in the car so they can buy groceries. Available spending money is relative to what you make and what your bills are.
So....stop with the thinking that evryone has an extra $15 a month to piss away on gaming.
Your other point is valid...games like VG should be about $4.99 a month. No development and nothing new is being added....why is it the same cost per month as EQ or DCOU?
People who say they can't afford $15.00 a month shouldn't even be on the internet posting that they can't afford that $15.00 a month they should be out job hunting!
To the guy who posted they are so poor they are living at near street level..WTH? Why do you have internet then or even a computer?
I personaly think the only people who prefer f2p over p2p are either living in a 3rd world country, kids who don't/can't have jobs, or are the type of adults that would complain about getting a tomato on their burger when they asked to not have one and demand the burger to be free instead of taking the tomato off themselves.

No development and nothing new is being added....why is it the same cost per month as EQ or DCOU?
lol I'm really bad at math. I have no issue with the monthy fee just to clarify.
