Grabbing an existing IP can be a great way for your game to have an established fanbase before it even launches. This core group can stabilize your initial launch period, a contentious time for any new MMO.
There can be a double edged sword element to this type of strategy as well though. If you don't do the IP justice in the eyes of the rabid hardcores, you've made yourself an incredibly vocal and negative enemy to your games long term success.
I would like to see one based on Warhhammer, which draws on the imagery and theme of John Blanches vision of the world
and doesn't make so many fundamentally flawed design decisions.
What IP would you like to see made into an MMO?
Comments
Ultima Online (which ironically I never played but have researched)
World of Darkness (coming by CCP in a few trillion years)
AH! (edit) and Traveller which argueably could be considered EvE already
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
Please do not respond to me
Totally agree! It would be a dream come true. If done right that is...
edit: When in the time line is the question. ><;
That would be a great one, with all the political factions and Spice driving the ongoing conflicts
Rifts
by Palladium Books
Ing the Conqueror
Fireflyyy
Play as your fav retro characters: cnd-online.net. My site: www.lysle.net. Blog: creatingaworld.blogspot.com.
Playing: Rift, LotRO
Waiting on: GW2, BP
Or how about the Sword of Truth series?? Could be pretty awesome. Confessor class anyone???

Firefly, Dune or Open Range (It's a Western Movie)
I'd like to see an MMO based off of author Brian Lumleys works: "Vampire World Trilogy"
A western done well could be a ton of fun. Not much diversity in mounts though
I don't want to see any more Ips turned into MMOs. I would prefer to see original material produced so that developers don't have some lame ass restrictions placed upon them by some 3rd party.
Shadowrun
or
an AAA title set in caribbean region in the age of sails (i.e. a proper pirate MMO)
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been -Wayne Gretzky
None.
I want to see knew ideas, worlds and settings. That will keep expectations lower and raised creativeity as developers wont be bound by the parameters that define an IP.
Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.
Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
Elric of Melnibone
But unfortunately a lot of players would be running around wanting to BE Elric with his life feeding sword and there's only one Elric.
*cough* and that's me.

Robert A. Heinlein universe (No Casper Van Dien) or any IP where the devs don't get their balls put in a vice when they say hey we are making more than 2 factions. I'm super bummed Dark Millenium isn't going to have more than 2 factions. "Diety of your choice" bless the dev team that let's me roll a zerg/tyranid/bugs/non 2 legged creature.
"Rather than love, than money, than fame, give me truth."
Dune would be my dream game.. but then again, if it was made I would probably only be dissapointed.
Remember Old School Ultima Online
TRON .. it seems like a no brainer. Players would be users. NPC's would be programs. City hubs would be servers in diferent countries. Off the grid would be open questing zones. Unlimted content potential could stem from the GRID servers being influenced by modern video games, but becomeing "tron" like.
Ditto, I tire of seeing great iconic IPs ruined by horrible developers. I want to see entirely new ones instead...
IPs I would like to see, only because they have great settings as opposed to iconic characters.
Deadlands - Western / Horror / Mad Scientist RPG
Heavy Gear - sci-fi mecha with multiple factions
Traveler - space opera
Mech Warrior / Battletech - huge world with great depth (gl Smith& Tinker)
Legend of the Five Rings - Oriental fantasy RPG, multiple factions, great depth
I remember during the hype for SWG that polls had people stating that 49% wanting to be Jedi and 49% wanted to be bounty hunters. That meant 2% wanted to be the other 30 professions. Luckily Pre-Cu SWG made being a jedi and a bounty hunter extremely hard. I can't wait to play SW: TOR and see Luke97603 and Dart Vaaader running around in a group.
Just because a movie or book series is great it doesn't mean it would make a great MMO. Hollywood has proven with both sequels and remakes / reimaginings that they should stop while there ahead. The end users, us, always lose because we end up playing the game or seeing the movie just because of the IP. Jar Jar Binks anyone?
ip I'd like to see as an mmo......I remember a cartoon on tv years and years ago called Pirates of Dark Water and that jumped to mind right away, could be very interesting.
realistically I'd like to see a twilight mmo. seriously. so it can bomb and kill the shitcycle of hype.
One word. Pokemon.
Ummmmmm Dragonball Z?
Harry Potter?
Oh I got it! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!
How bout we throw all brand names into one. Like some people can be a pokemon, others can be a turtle , and I can be Goku because I like screaming like I am constapated and all of a sudden its over 9000!!!!!!
-I am here to perform logic
^^^ This. I remember when i first heard of DDO i was hoping it would take place in Forgotten Realms. I was so disappointed when i found out it was only Eberron. Forgotten Realms has a wonderful world with tons of different races and factions and has an extremely large amount of potential. I would love it if a great company could turn it into an MMO.
edit: can you please post a link to that map, i've never been able to find a single on of the whole world.
The Night's Dawn Trilogy.
Anyone else familiar with it? It has great races, factions... amazing opportunities for sandbox as well as themepark gameplay, including player-made combat via The Reality Disfunction...
