.... people do not even know what Nextgen means anymore.... its about engines..
Now these exsamples do not even cover the true meaning of nextgen but meh for the discussion it fits
Gen 0 ,the start, Muds, plain text discription gaming. (old Muds incl Mer59) it had pictures but it still was a MuD.
Gen 1: UO , the first true 2d MMO. were text was replaced by grapics.
gen2: SWG.EQ.WOW,EVE ,Aion. 3d mmo's they basicly use the same engines as the 2d version text replaced for grapics,2d made 3d and fairly nice emulated stuff like flight and lightning. all still fairly basic.
Gen3: ???? For a game to be Above the gen2 it does not need to ahve better grapics. (tho it helps) but the engine must be clearly above and beyond the psychic current games have. Hair that moves naturaly, water that flows and when you step into the flow it should change direction. gravity, weater, lighting not based on a Dev node placement but true light that can be directed or blocked. that will be next gen.
Rift, (i dont play it nor know it well) is probaly a nice game as many seem to praize it to heaven but its simply using alot of old tech (coding) to make things look nicer . every mmo or current gen game tries it/does it.
their Modulated server network aint a new idea but its a good step in the right direction , they got servers that handle lighting and weather, servers that handle rocks and trees blowing.. instead of the local (client) figgering things out, its a good step but not nextgen
Excuse me, but UO was not the first MMO. Meridian 59 released before UO and it was 3D, that is why I put M59 and EQ as gen 1. And there goes your theory since 3D MMOs existed before 2D.
It is not about graphics. It is about ideas and make way for new players into the genre.
Meridian 59, abbreviated M59, is an online computer role-playing game first published by the now defunct 3DO Company. First launched online in an early form on December 15, 1995 and released commercially on September 27, 1996 with a flat-rate monthly subscription,
Ultima Online (UO) is a graphical massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), released on September 24, 1997,[2] by Origin Systems
Will people stop saying that UO was the first MMO! I and many others played MMOs before UO released. We are a few here that started with M59. If you consider the realm as a MMO it released even earlier than M59 and there are a few vets from it here as well.
With the new technology they can introduce new content on the fly though without having you logout and patch the client. That's kind of neat right?
I swear to god there is one or two games out there right now that can do that. I think maybe Warhammer can...
either way, cloud baby, cloud. It would be funny if just say...the AI server went down.
Everquest II can to an extent. In fact if you use the streaming client the client will actually download zones and other areas as you enter them, rather than just download the full client right away.
Rift will show that content like that can be done which might allow other devs to look and say "hey, if Rift could do this, and GW2 was able to that... why can't we do better?". So don't be surprized to see an Oblivion style (not Oblivion named) MMO sometime in the near future.
So while some people might say "Rift isnt next gen..." I say that it's leading into the next gen.
Bethesda is already working on a MMO so we will see a Oblivion styled MMO no matter what.
But I don't see what you mean Rift is doing so different, rifts and invasions are a scaling and more dynamic version of WARs PQs.So if any game leading to next gen that way it would be WAR?
Or do you mean the soul system? Fewer classes with more specialization is probably not what will lead to next gen either.
Rift is a fine game but it is not close to nextgen. It have a few new features but I think either WAR or GW2 will get the credits for dynamic content, WAR was first and GW2 takes it to an entirely new level, Rift is somewhere in between but they should have added more stuff like this.
The server based tech allowing the developers to create a more dynamic experience in the game (server controlled invasions) is not anywhere close to WARs PQ's (static content set on a reset loop). Rift's invasions have multiple AI's running across an entire map batteling other AI from the different planes as well as normal world NPCs. WAR's PQ were locked into a static spot, set on a static timer and reset for the next group within a preset wait period.
As for the Oblivion comment, I think you missed what was meant by 'Oblivion styled'. Terroni was talking about having free roaming packs of NPCs, not set on a rail but rather by enviornmental influences (hunting and stalking players). Sure Bethesda is working on an Oblivion MMO, but 10 to 1 it will be NOTHING like the actual RPG its named after.
As for GW2, right now it's pretty much all speculation as to what thier version of dynamic content is. Sure there was a short video (mostly showing combat and not the dynamic content) as well as a lot of dev hype and promises, but until players can actually experience this content first hand (note the dynamic content wasn't really shown at any public showings of the game) there is no telling how close the actual content will match what Anet has been promising.
There are 3 types of people in the world. 1.) Those who make things happen 2.) Those who watch things happen 3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
To continue my rant. RIFT might be a great well polished traditional MMO and I think that is great but from a GAME perspective its FAR from next generation.
Next Gen? Arche Age (although to be frank even Darkfall or EvE for that matter).
skill system only, seige mechanics, naval combat, craftable homes cities and strongholds, farms, clan controlled regions, group crafting, dynamic lore, dynamic mobs. That is the new standard.
In short, if your game is not a FPS view of you as a character in an RTS game, its not next gen as far as I am concerned.

WoW can do that too, but that's patching to the client. I'm talking - you're in the game and a traveling merchant shows up. He was never there before, first time you saw him. Must of been past this area a dozen times throughout the weekend and then one time he was there. I saw that happen. Never saw the guy again...have no idea where he went to. He wasn't walking a set path or anything like you see normal NPCs walking up and down the road.

Would FFXIV be 'next gen' had Square Enix not botched playability? What about sub-genre? Is 'next gen' reserved to sandbox? Or is it denied to a game keeping the holy trinity?
In my humble opinion, I think it's a mistake to try to lock MMOs (or any form of entertainment) into generations. We cannot just throw in a list of features and call it 'next gen'. It's too vague and leads to pointless arguments whatsoever.
I like seeing a lot of people falling into the trap of rift.
This game will be a fail in comparison to the games that come.
I vote for swtor and bioware.Though im very dissapointed from masseffect 1 and dragon age origins.Mass effect 2 was awesome and i think swtor will deliver us some great fun.
What i want from a game is to make me have fun.At the moment i enjoy dc universe online which may not be the mmo of the year but it's very fun to play.

You like DCUO, which I found a boring single player game with others in Beta; but if you're having fun that's great. I wouldn't say you're falling into a trap by playing it.

If Rift is "next gen", I'll stick to the current gen, thanks.

Rift is obviously a next-gen game, hands down....for Rift fans only. Who cares about the obsolete tab-targeting, who cares about the same old holy trinity, who cares about the dated graphic compared to current engine as long as people want it and sub to it. They like it and thus can paint any glory they want on it.
This post offers nothing, but troll bait. It's post like these that cause threads to flame out of control. Your intent is nothing more than to attack. Why? Who the heck knows, but I find your post lacking any real detail that adds to the conversation. Your opinions come from your perception of Rift and projection of those who disagree with your perception.
Isnt my post crystal clear? Or has Trion decided to use a non-targeting combat system at launch? Or did they decided to scrap the holy trinity? These 2 functions are the definitions of the current-gen MMO, no? And if you call my post a flame bait then yours is nothing but a post of defensive fanboy. Calling a game next-gen while it provides particular nothing new just because it's your favorite game...

Tab targeting is obsolete? that's your opinion.
Same old holy trinity? that's your opinion. Rift does offer an in-depth class system so not every warrior is a tank, cleric healer and mage/rogue dps. You can run a dungeon with three rogues, a cleric and a mage and do well. You can do it with a warrior, 2 mages, 2 rogues and many more combinations than just that. Calling it the same old holy trinity is disingenuous.
The graphics are dated compared to the current engine? That's your opinion. Trion has developed their own engine based off of Gamebryo. The graphics look pretty damn good imho.
I'm a defensive fanboy now? That's your opinion because I think your post is aggressive and insulting to people who like the game. Considering you chose to post this insult in the Rift Forum, I see this as trolling. That's my opinion.
The game is considered by some as next-gen because of the cloud computing and content being provided by the server and not the client. This was already mentioned in this thread by the OP and others. You either chose to ignore it or not respond. If you don't think that qualifies as next-gen, that's your opinion. It doesn't make anyone elses less valid.
"They like it and paint any glory they want on it" isn't a troll post? It's a negative generalization aimed at a group of people whom do not share your view and think Rift is good. Anyways, I believe some would see that comment that way.
Good stuff but not enough to call the game next gen.
A new generation must differ a lot from the old one and while Rift is a fine game it is not that different from the games before it. People have called many games nexgen, like AoC, WAR, TCoS, FFXIV, Darkfall, MO and many more. Neither of them are good enough to be called nexgen in my book.
I would say we have 3 generations of games.
1st Gen. Started with Meridian 59. Most famous is EQ. The first MMOs, a lot from them are still around.
2nd Gen. Started with UO, have games like Eve, MOa nd DF in it. Usually called sandox.
3rd gen. MMORPGs for a mainstream audiance. Started with Wow and EQ2. Basically a 1st generation game but with many features to make it easier for regular people to play, and removed most of the complicated work. A lot more item based than earlier games.
Thses are my views of generations of course and not anything official. And I am not saying that any game I class as a third generation game is better than previous games, just different. But the games of a certain generation do belongs together.
And Rift still belongs together with games like Wow, EQ2 and LOTRO. Same quest system, same combat mechanics, same levels. The sould system, the rifts and excellent customer support just isn't enough to valid a new generation.
I am not sure what the 4th generation will be.Maybe TOR, GW2 or WoDO have enough new ideas to valid fir a 4th gen title, maybe it instead will be something that is a mix between a game and a social page alá facebook. Maybe it is something else. You usually have to look back to see where it changed. But it ain't Rift.
Nice wording, i totally see and feel it the same way.

Riiight. We are talking about a combat system which has been around for nearly 2 decades. If it's not obsolete then Windows 95 must be still hot today.

We'll see at launch. I hope you are right about this and yes, Im gonna play Rift (while waiting for Tera and GW2 though).
The graphics are dated compared to the current engine? That's your opinion. Trion has developed their own engine based off of Gamebryo. The graphics look pretty damn good imho.
That's your opinion. A next-gen game must have much better graphic, even for a MMO imo but lower graphic quality means more players with mid-end and low-end computers can play. I can't argue against that.
I'm a defensive fanboy now? That's your opinion because I think your post is aggressive and insulting to people who like the game. Considering you chose to post this insult in the Rift Forum, I see this as trolling. That's my opinion.
Was my post a troll post? That's obviously your opinion. Nowhere did I say Rift sucks donkey ball blah blah. I said this does not qualify as a next-gen game and clearly gave my 3 reasons in my first post, only Rift fans would qualify it a next-gen. You're the one who started it.

Then their ideas do not make mine any less valid also. You can either choose to ignore it or not to respond. Content being generated from the server, that's a briliant idea but this alone doesn't make a game next-gen while every other features are the same old current-gen MMO features.
"They like it and paint any glory they want on it" isn't a troll post? It's a negative generalization aimed at a group of people whom do not share your view and think Rift is good. Anyways, I believe some would see that comment that way.
Then how about providing some strong counter-arguments other than 'that's your opinion'?
And they did this on a larger scale actually. In fact, I've been apart of EQ1 events of a similar (altho' admittedly aged) venue. I'm afraid there's nothing next-gen about it. Tho' it is a good practice.
I can understand you liking what you listed, but the concept of next gen is NEVER the same person to person.
In short, your idea of next gen is not my idea of next gen, and my idea of next gen is not the next person's idea of next gen.
(Part of your idea, makes Vanguard next gen, just letting you know)
yes its true, some people would rather have a less tasty burger but from a place with better customer service and yes they would consider such a place a 'next gen' in resturant because although the food is bad or the same it has great customer service.
but,
there are also some people who think we never went to the moon.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
ive seen it, and all ive seen was a good build in of all the old features i knew from other games.
but hell, if you wanna believe it's next gen, whatever rocks your boat.
imo this is just what wow did, use all the good ideas in one mmo, and make it on a fluent engine, and that's where the "next gen" stops for me and rift.
the animations dont look smooth enough and the combat feels even more statics than in other games.
just my opinion tho. hf with rift

Consoles: Playstation 1, 2, 3...each a new generation and a break from the past generations. Although the games play generally the same on each generation. What they brought is new hardware. Rift has new hardware (but really what MMO doesn't make a homebrew)
Physical media: record..8 tracks..tapes..CDs..mp3s...Each generation brought improvements over the last. Smaller size, better portability, etc. While you can get the same music on each type, the newest type generally is an improvement. Again, Rift is the same music, but in higher fidelity.
Drop the next-gen marketing and people will argue if the game itself has merit.

so that brings up a question.
What do you call a game that changes the 'rules' on how a game is played? either by adding many new features that are very different from all the games before or completely changing the rules of all the games before.
Is that not called 'next gen'?
For me, in gaming, 'next gen' should be both and yes, if the older game play is the same but the graphics updated then its just 'updated' in my mind. like taking old black and white movies and colorizing them.
The graphics platform is not the game, its the paper the game is written on. The paper can be next gen but not the game by default

This is untrue. Trion does not have their own engine based off Gamebryo. He is basing this off a very old quote in which a Trion developer said they were using a defered rendering approach. He has shown many times he doesnt know what this actually means and if you try to bring it up, well "defensive" comes to mind. Look below.
What rift does do is have its own tweaked shader, most games do. This is not a different graphics engine, rather a shading algorithm. Its a tweak, not an overhaul.
I'm a defensive fanboy now? That's your opinion because I think your post is aggressive and insulting to people who like the game. Considering you chose to post this insult in the Rift Forum, I see this as trolling. That's my opinion.

If you do not think Rift is the greatest thing since sliced bread, and have any non favorable thing to say about the game, it therefore results in insulting Rift. (facepalm)

Many games have used this "cloud computing". While trion might think they have optimized the approach, its not new or next gen. It is also a lie to suggest they can add "new content" as in full on asset and world geometry changes without a patch. Scott talked about this. They can change what the system is setup to do, meaning the assets are already on the client side to begin with, but its not going to be brand new assets.
"They like it and paint any glory they want on it" isn't a troll post? It's a negative generalization aimed at a group of people whom do not share your view and think Rift is good. Anyways, I believe some would see that comment that way.

Agree. They generally dont have a strong counter argument though. Instead its just the usual personal insults and the like.
Too often the pot is calling the kettle black.
Hmm Luf i think some people begin to take it personally if Rift is not praised in every single thread on this forum.
You are right though, most of it is his opinion. There is a lot of subjective stuff being said, but very little in the way of objective.
In response to this line "Same old holy trinity? that's your opinion. Rift does offer an in-depth class system so not every warrior is a tank, cleric healer and mage/rogue dps."
This kind of misinformation needs to be addressesd. One of Trion's developers made this. I'll let it speak for itself.
The Trinity Does Exist! It is important to note that over 60% of the souls fall under the DPS category.
" Rift does offer an in-depth class system so not every warrior is a tank, cleric healer and mage/rogue dps. You can run a dungeon with three rogues, a cleric and a mage and do well. You can do it with a warrior, 2 mages, 2 rogues and many more combinations than just that"
This is almost worst. Two points. 1, this is based off the opinion of someone who has only experienced the few low level dungeons in the game. No one knows how it scales. 2, IF this is true, then it says something about the quality and design of the dungeons. It means they are mostly tank and spank ordeals. It can also mean that any class/role doesnt really do anything very well. So its a question of design consequences and whether or not its a good thing or a bad thing towards end game.

After reading this I'm not sure if I can wait until 2012 for this game.

If Rift is "next gen", I'll stick to the current gen, thanks.

Nice wording, i totally see and feel it the same way.

The King wonders;
When did Horizons come out?
And they did this on a larger scale actually. In fact, I've been apart of EQ1 events of a similar (altho' admittedly aged) venue. I'm afraid there's nothing next-gen about it. Tho' it is a good practice.
Next gen when the phrase meant something was about gameplay not customer service. But years ago what it meant was lost in a pool of hype.
Maybe we will be able to go on a quest some day to rescue it, until then the phrase is pointless.
yes its true, some people would rather have a less tasty burger but from a place with better customer service and yes they would consider such a place a 'next gen' in resturant because although the food is bad or the same it has great customer service.
but,
there are also some people who think we never went to the moon.
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.

hm, willy heard ya, will doesnt agree.
ive seen it, and all ive seen was a good build in of all the old features i knew from other games.
but hell, if you wanna believe it's next gen, whatever rocks your boat.
imo this is just what wow did, use all the good ideas in one mmo, and make it on a fluent engine, and that's where the "next gen" stops for me and rift.
the animations dont look smooth enough and the combat feels even more statics than in other games.
just my opinion tho. hf with rift
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
Sorry to burst your bubble guys, but we are still in the Everquest gen., so we are in the same gen for more than ten years now, get over it.
I was thinking...True next-gen products:
The paper can be next gen but not the game by default

can i have that line for my sig?
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
