AWSOME!!! been waiting on this for awhile
Why don't they just choose from the tons who already signed up for a beta key and are interested in the game? I hate when companies just give them away to anyone.
As expected - no mention of an open beta, because their isn't going to be one. Masthead have come to their senses and realised if the public actually experience the game first hand, without paying a dime, they'll do a runner after "testing" it, leaving Masthead potless.
If they don't hurry up, they won't even have time for a closed beta.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I got this!
Have hopes for this game, but I dont know if launch will be too hot, I mean Feb 4? Come on, its gonna be worse than Vanguard.
You know, folks at Masthead, it might go a loooooooong ways towards promoting a better image of the game and company in general if you just sent keys to the many people who nevre got a beta invite rather than making them available in 'giveaways'. Yes I know beta key giveaways on sites is the best way to easily generate visibility for the game to tons of people who have never even heard of it, but I know there are plenty of people (including myself heh) who have been interested in the game for years, have been signed up for the beta for years and have never gotten a beta invite despite showing that interest in the game for awhile. How about throwing those folks a bone before dumping the game out there for that hoped for mass appeal?
But hey beta key giveaways are all good. Another chance to get that elusive beta key I have beenlonging for yet missing out on.
Hell, I signed up like a year ago for beta no word still and have since then recenlty sent in 2 more beta apps why not let people who are actually interested in the game give it a test drive and maybe get some last minute bugs squashed instead of letting people in just so they can complain about the game?
There is an open beta. It starts on 2/4/11... you just have to pay $60 to get into it.
Not sure if gamers on this site even realize it, but a lot of games that did very well never had an open beta, UO, EQ1, DAoC, EQ2 and alot of others. in fact, this whole open beta (free trial if your being honest) is something that became the norm not to long ago.
I personally think open betas do nothing but hurt a game at launch. And not because the game is bad, but because all the people that have no interest in that game and really want it to fail jump in and then start bashing it pre launch. when you bypass an open beta and only allow the people that have an actual interest in the game, you end up with more accurate post about it on general game forums.
All of this of course is just my take on it and is thus mostly opinion, therefore absolutely correct and without flaw. Thanks

I was going to post the same. Why do gamers speak of open beta like it's something granted anyway? Most games don't hold an open beta and if they do it's usually a head-start through pre-orders. Not too excited about the game but no open beta means nothing sorry.
Good news! I just hope that MMORPG.com will post the keys (or part of them) during EU times instead of US mornings only...
As someone alread mentioned it is a great way to advertise the game for indie companies that don't have alot of money.
If the game is actually fun to play gamers won't do a "hit and run", they'll want to subscribe. However, these beta key raffles are downright obnoxious.
It's abnoxious people *expect* to be invited just because they signed an application a year ago. Masthead needs some sort of beta raffle as it provides them with cheap and easy marketing. Besides, the game comes out in 2 weeks or so, does it really bother you that much?
I hope to get in, the game seems interesting, if it is not completely broken!
Would dearly love a key. I've been waiting years for one.
I would settle quite happily for a free trial once the game releases, too, though. As short a time period as 3 days, or 12 hours game play or something similar would be just fine by me. I don't need two weeks or even a week to know whether I want to buy a game, but I do need something.

I'd love a key to test the game. Been trying for a while to get in with no luck heh.
"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Earthrise seem to work with mmorpg.com so no doubt keys will be posted on here probably on US primetime

You better set your alarm then!

No need to have a link checker set for next promo.
I could also read that to mean that distributors (online and/or otherwise) will have beta keys available for those who preorder the game.
However, since there's very little time left before the supposed release date, unless that release date turns into a beta release, I guess I don't have to read it that way.
Besides, I like your interpretation much better!

Yes, it does, because raffles inevitably fill the game up with people who aren't remotely interested in giving constructive feedback during the beta. Developers then don't find out about core gameplay issues until after the game is released, at which point they are a much more time consuming hassle to fix. Anyways, these betas are not so much a feeling of "entitlement" rather than that of fairness- while this is certainly a fairly effective marketing ploy it definitely gives the wrong first impression to the core group of players that have been heavily interested in the game.
It seems to me like if they still need an NDA two weeks before the game's final release there really are issues with the game that they don't want these players to find.
The issues of the current beta-client are:
- excessive rubberbanding
- heavy lag
- constant freezing
All other things like unpolished textures, animations etc are secondary.
In an earlier version of the client you could unlock your mouse and play the game like you would do with any other FPS, currently this feature is disabled and it feels real rubbish therefore, as you can't strafe etc.
Ai is dumb like rocks and far from what Masthead wanted the Ai to be. Quests are there, but it takes ages to complete them becuase of the rarely seen mobs.
Crafting is... well... where is it?
That sums it up, for the game-status 3 weeks before launch.
