The truth is the game still isnt ready at all, its like they designed the game as a solo game than made it where you are all in 1 world. If you want to play an MMO with friends this game isnt for you, its a challenge just to simply find your friends to play with unless you know their phone numbers, and being in a League or Legion is useless, not to mention the lack of an auction house makes rare items useless if you cant equip them yourself.
I just want to clarify. Its tough finding your friends, like typing /invite (name) and then following the blue arrow on your map?
The rarest items aren't able to be traded or mailed, and its doubtful those items will be on the auction house when it goes live. You can always sell those items though, cash is always helpful.
Not sure about Leagues being useless, when I want to find someone to play with, I can just ask in league chat and get a response right away.
I think the game wasn't ready to launch too, but I think your points need more clarification.
After 1 month, you should easily be 30 and have been 30 for a while. You have seen all there is to see and done all there is to do at least once if not multiple grinding times.
Now there is NOTHING to do but grind achievements and the end game content...which is primarily PVP.
Get to that point and tell me what you think of the game.
I'll let you know in a few months. I'm levelling 4 different characters right now, all with different powers and weapons. After two weeks, my "main" is level 12, the others are not even level 10.
Try to remember that everything people are complaining about is true only if you follow the usual "Make one character, play it all the time, and get to the end as fast as you can!"
If you spend any time whatsoever seriously hunting for collectibles, doing some open world PvP just for the heck of it, and playing more than one character...then no, you won't easily be 30 in a month.
EDIT: I should mention that I have my eye on 2 other new characters right now, and this will delay my reaching max level even more. Y'know, to some- those of us burned out on the usual fantasy-themed crap -this game is a fun breath of fresh air.
Im worried if a reviewer writes this : " It’s no secret that DCUO is an MMO with a lot to offer the time-limited gamer, and I’m not here to start a debate over whether or not there’s enough content in DCUO at launch. "
The MMO costs 14.99$ a month. Just like any other AAA MMO. The MMO offers the same to a time-limited gamer as to a hardcore gamer. So it should be judged based on that too. Instead of making up excuses that its meant for the time-limited gamer. Then why is the sub that high? DCUO just doesnt have much content.
Or at least give the hardcore MMO players the advice to wait 6 months or so before subbing. To see if SOE delivers on their promise about loads of content.
Yep... it's kinda like having a cable company pitch: Yep, for the same price, we've got 3 channels instead of hundreds like the other guys, cuz we're catering to people who don't watch alot of tv.
Funny how so many focus on the content, there is plenty of end game for a game that just came out.
As for WoW end game content seriously ??? do you still do Molten Core, BWL, TOC , ICC ect.....
My bet is no, WoW for PvE has 1 insance to do for hardcores, and thats the newest raid. Less harcore people can continously repeat the same 5 mans over and over.
DCUO has a lot of work left to do, and it is sad that MMO's dont come out always as polished as they should, but give this game 3-6 months I think it will be pretty good.

Same thing here. I like this game because it's instant action. Leveling multiple characters because they're all SO different from eachother. There are just no timesinks in this game. And besides, I can play some BFBC2 and Global Agenda on the side. APB:R beta is coming up as well. DC Universe fits perfectly.
Oh and yeah, there are problems with the game, but nothing gamebreaking. I do know that there are people looking for more within a MMO(RPG). Same for me. However, slowly but steadily I'm moving away from the hotbars and talent trees, and instead moving toward hybrids like Global Agenda, APB, DC Universe Online.
True MMORPG players are correct, there is not enough content to suit their gamestyle, as they mostly play one game. But for those (like me) that play multiple games, this is great, as it still offers way more content than a normal Multiplayer. Just don't bash a game because it doesn't fit YOUR play style.
LOL. I read this article, and keep remembering the last few Bill has wrote on this game singing it's praises. In fact he gave it the "2 thumbs up" in his last review.
Anyone who tried the beta knew this game was a stinker. The UI was a joke, and the game was so easy my 8 year old was awesome at it. I played it for 1 week and knew it was just more over-hyped garbage which was being released far too early.
I dunno, guess I'm just kinda chuckling at the sudden about-face. DCUO has gone from "2 thumbs up, run out and buy it NOW!", to "Oh, this game is kind of shallow and is not very well designed" (paraphrasing).
Bill, here's my prediction ... by the time you do your 1 year review, DCUO will either be F2P or closed down.
Limited power sets, inexplicable lack of body variation, shortage of content, recycling of content.
To the weaknesses listed in this article, add the lack of a functioning auction house and difficulties with trading.
I agree with the poster above as well - grinding achievements (feats) in NOT an alt-friendly (or fun) method of advancement. Overall, I believe the game has fairly mediocre character development. One of the great things about both CoX and CO was the ability to modify individual powers, which is something that cannot be done in DCUO.
To me, it's pretty clear that this game wasn't ready to be released. Some of the systems are pretty well complete, while others are half-baked or non-existent.
But there's that vague description of what powers do. There's your SOE copyrighted content right there Endless respeccing is bonafide content according to many MMOs.

You know, having an edit ability here would be nice (in addition to actually posting what I wrote). This way I wouldn't have to post 30 times.
Im worried if a reviewer writes this : " It’s no secret that DCUO is an MMO with a lot to offer the time-limited gamer, and I’m not here to start a debate over whether or not there’s enough content in DCUO at launch. "

This is a game I would like to try but I too had concerns about content . It would have suited the Guild Wars model far better . To make this worth a standard subscription fee it would have to have a significant amount of content added each month .I really can't see this happening . Still its a nice looking and fun game its just not worth the price .
I dunno, guess I'm just kinda chuckling at the sudden about-face. DCUO has gone from "2 thumbs up, run out and buy it NOW!", to "Oh, this game is kind of shallow and is not very well designed" (paraphrasing).
That's terrible paraphrasing. Never get into this line of work. Some Concerns, a whopping three, in an article where I speak of how I can't stop playing the game and find it the most fun I've had in an MMO in years, does not an about face make.
Comprehension, my dear Watson, is not just what you want to read.
Try to be excellent to everyone you meet. You never know what someone else has seen or endured.
the game is decent, but MMO in name only. its very much a solo game. no incentive to group, no one wants to group, no one needs to group. this needs to be worked on asap... also, the skills are too cookie cutter. not enough diversity.
i will give it a month or 2, but i wont pay $15 a month for a solo game. i prefer a good mmo, and i dont mind paying $15 for a game that i like.
i hate to say it, but its almost as if this game is the swg NGE that they wanted back then, and are doing it from the begining here so no one complains

While DCUO isn't the game for me I must say that isn't the worse list I could imagine for a newly released mmorpg and can attest to the fact that it is a high quality polished game that seems to be able to servea makret for certain.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
The article mentions all the glaring irritations I found in the beta. I had hoped by release those would have been taken care of. Now I hope they are being worked on because I do enjoy the game as a solo player. Sometimes I group with a friend. I need to swallow my fear and try the other options. The lack of a good chat system greatly curtails my accomplishments.
This might have already been mentioned, too lazy to read ALL the posts, but with regards to the current chat system I have only one solution to offer SOE, check out Phatansy Star Online, another cross platform (which by the way was also initially developed with console in mind) that has ZERO issues with their chat system.
Oh and I know this might be very MINOR compared to some of the real functional issues with the game but I feel it is equally important given the comic book nature, WHY THE HELL CAN'T WE CREATE AN IN-GAME BACK STORY FOR OUR HEROES/VILLIANS? I mean seriously, many of us go to great lengths to create our perfect toon based on a vision in our heads but without the ability for other know how this came about it doesn't feel very COMIC like now does it?
I agree a bit but it seems the agme will have more appeal too the hardcore dc comic fans than your normal gamer it tends tooapease alot of us dc fans a mmo isnt just about the gameplay in itself yeah its a must but a mmo is also a big virtual playground for the rp crowd which mmorpgs were inteded for before they hit the mainstream markets. And in DCU there are tons of potential for dc nuts too rp and too immerse themselve into a product thats about 70 so years old yeah there alot needed lvl cap need a quick raise because it is too short but if sony/dc holds true they are suppose too have monthly updates, updates with actual content adn big patched ever 3 or so months and with the dc name there are infinite potential for xpacs and alll kinds of good stuff.I dont know why people seem too expect so much on launch everyone should know launches tend too suck first couple weeks WoW eq2 none of them were any better on release.
My big concern right now the lack of communication on soe's part they havnt so much as said anything on what is upcomming im sure if they put something out it would apease most the players here right now.
Knowing Sony's background, I think they intentionally already plan to go b2p at a certain date or sales indicator. That way they can get the most money out of IP fans and others just craving a new mmo. Once the hoopla dies down, 1 month maybe 2 (depending on updates), then switch to a b2p then sell content packs/bank or character slots/vanity items to generate revenue. It seems they are already set up for a in-game store. This game is actually pretty fun though and seems to cater more to pvp'ers. The pvp seems to have a little bit more of tactics involved than typical auto-attack mmos. You cant just rub your junk across the keyboard and expect your gear to keep you up.
I hate to be another tin foil hat wearer, but Bill (and mmorpg.com) has a credibility issue here. Leading into the launch it was "don't believe the haters, this game is a breath of fresh air!" and now it's "see what wrinkles Bills brow" ha ha we're not just shills. These are the same problems that people have been pointing out for months, but Bill is only just now seeing them since he hit the 20 hour mark on a game he's been playing since beta? This after the mea culpa article explaining that he can wear his opinion hat and his reviewer hat and still be objective, and a list of unappreciated games that includes a game that hasn't been released yet. Seriously, when you guys take advertising $$ from the companies you cover, you need to bend over backwards to maintain editorial credibility. The signal to noise on this site continues to get worse and I'm pretty tired of articles nested under other pages for no other reason that to boost ad impressions.

DCUO rocks. Chat sucks is old news, but the rest of the game is great fun. Runs mint. Sweet graphics. A welcomed change from all the wow clones.
Chat will be upgraded. Don't believe the hate. Anyone thinking of, needs to try it for themselves
