Count me in on an Amazon order. Call me old-fashioned but I need a physical copy of my games. I like to keep them on a shelf to display. I usually order digital copy for wifey though after that.
I can't buy physical boxes for mmorpgs anymore. Ever since I unsubscribed to Warhammer after two months that god damn box haunts me as a constant reminder that I wasted money and fell for their PR bullshit without trying the game first.

Despite his loyal devotion to Rift (Personally I think the guy is misguided *should we call Amazon and warn them or is this a random detail? i dont get it*.) apparently Rift is equalling that of APB with regards to pre-orders, 300k'ish, personally I think this is good. But on the other hand APB folded within the first 2 months *other games didn't, where are you going here?*., not that I played it myself *ok?*.
Will Trion be the next MMO in the graveyard? *based on the guy who answers phones at Amazon's statistics or the infallible powers of correlation used above?*
I don't understand where the numbers are coming from. I mean unlike all the other big mmos released the last 6+ years this game has no pre-installed fanbase. This isn't lord of the rings, Warcraft, Conan or Warhammer and I haven't seen any comercials like you do for wow, Lotro and Gw2. How do people know about this game? I think rift is a good game, but a good game that will probably settle at 200k... I honestly didnt expect to be talking about box sales exceeding 1 million.

Not to throw more wood on the fire, but pre-orders are both from amazon meaning both had 300k subs. Both games were also available at other outlets, it wasn't just RIFT being sold at other places lol.
Anyways I could care less regardless, just thought i'd throw that in there.
Also comparing APB to RIFT is borderline retarded, i've only seen videos from both games but you can tell the quality difference between the two right away.

That was kinda the point in my post up there somewhere. Big numbers for an unknown IP, and a company with it's 1st MMO. I would kinda hope that it DOES settle somewhere in the range of 300-500k at the top end. I mean I want a hit game but I would rather not have queues.
What if Rift really does well? What if rift sells close to two million boxes and retains most of them? What if more and more people come to the game and the sub numbers get higher? What will that even mean for the genre? This entire time we've been saying WoW numbers are a fluke. What if Rift challenges wow in NA/Euro? Does that mean the genre other the wow was actually full of fail that the fluke wasn't really a fluke at all and all the other games just sucked? That all we needed was a "good" game to release for someone to achieve what Blizzards done... Man that would certainly toss most of the mmo arguments on this forum in the bin, no?

Ahhh... the classic "My friend..." line.
Unless you have tangible proof of the number of preorders ('My friend told me so...' doesnt count...) then it's all just speculation.
I mean I have a friend who works at Amazon.com and she claims Rift has over 1 million preorders - see what I did there?

I don't know maybe word of mouth, having a polished fun game, a game that's better then 90% of the MMO's out today, maybe theres more MMORPG's players out there that could never see themself playing WoW so had to stick with the old school games and find Rift to be that modern MMORPG they can actualy enjoy.

What MMORPG do you think is better then Rift? Just curious cause you seem so sure of youself...

But... a real friend of mine is an op's manager at amazon, here in town... and he is working now. I will send him a text and ask what the real numbers are. If they're not crazy busy atm, he may text me back with the info.

I don't have a crystal ball, do you? How do we know. Who's to say rift can't. I've been over analyzing this game over and over for the last three weeks. Feature for feature, breaking everything down trying to find the flaws. Trying to fond a reason why this gMe can't be successful. The only thing I had was, other games couldn't compete with wow, so why expect rift too? Look at the game, forget that the game is traditional, look at the games features and overall execution. Now tell me what's wrong with rift... Tell me why it can't become popular also? I honestly can't think of one reason why it wouldn't be.

I haven't played RIFT only videos, and I just recently got the "VIP key" so i'll be trying it in 5 days.
To say that RIFT will challenge WoW isn't really that hard to be sure of it won't like lets be serious here.
Even if RIFT is a really good game, it's fucking WoW. Even if RIFT is a really good game there are 3 AAA mmo's coming out in the near future just waiting to grab some of the player base.
In all honesty in this day and age (in the mmo community) not even blizzard's new mmo would be able to come close to the numbers WoW did.

Actually Rock has a point. WoWs NA/EU sub base is the smaller portion of its overall playerbase (about 4.5million players total - 2.2 million players NA/EU each). While a new MMO might not hit earth shattering numbers like 12million world wide, getting 2million players both in NA and EU could be possible if a new MMO is released in a highly polished state with full functioning content. Now that game might not be Rift (could be GW2 or TOR for all we know).
Point is never say 'it won't' or 'it cant' because I can recall back in about 2005 people claiming this new MMO coming out could steal a majority of players from EQ and other MMOs of the day and everyone said "Nah, EQ2 and SWG will kill it..."

Really? I think its all about the mmorpg gamer base being hungry for a game that doesn't suck right out of the gate like we've gotten in the last 5 years. Initial game sales of triple A MMOs points to this trend, that the people want MMORPGs and good ones, but the devs better deliver after that first month.
So, I'm not surprised to be honest. Rift is getting talked about a lot in conversations about 2011 mmorpgs right next to SWTOR and GW2 so of course it's going to get attention. The beta reviews have also been good once everyone saw the devs listening to the community and changing the game very fast with each successive beta phase.

Peope keep bringing up the big three mmos releasing as if they are just around the corner. You guys realize gw2 may no be here until 2012, TERA is already slotted for Q4 2011 and TOR has no official release date. Also when you consider that everyone that bought Cata is now at level 85 doing the same old badge grind for armor that they've done since TBc I call releasing a game next month perfect timing. Wanna know what other game released with perfect timing? WoW... Now keep telling me it's not possible.
300k from Amazon alone is incredibley well done. Most people pre-ordered directly from Trion for beta access and the more affordable Collector's Edition option. The rest will pre-order from places like GameStop and Best Buy.

If Rift got preordered 300k times off Amazon then they will have 2 million + boxes/digital copies sold by launch easily.

Anyone have some solid figures we can use for comparison? Like, Game X sold Y games on Amazon, and Z games overall.
