I canceled my amazon order and did the digital through Trion.  If Amazon has 300K preorders imagine how mnay more there are from steam, Trion directly, gamestop, etc etc etc.  I would be surprised if their pre-orders dont tally up to 1 mil or higher.

I'm having a hard time figuring out the correlation you see between Rift and APB.

Me too.  A classic fantasy mmorpg vs an instanced third-person-shooter.  I don't get it either.

I think he was just comparing sales from Amazon.

This is only from amazon pre-orders guys, lol. This doesn't count every other retailer, some of you need to learn how to read :x. As always the mmorpg community failing at reading. 300k is a lot for just one retailer alone, that's huge.

Yes...because a 'friend' of a person on an internet forum said so, it must be true.  Not one person here questioned the source, lol.

I'd expect it to hit pretty high numbers as their forums are filled with proud WoW ex-pats who are finally starting to look for something similar but a tad different.  Initial sales are a big part of current MMO's, but longevity is now much harder to capture than it used to be due to more competition.

Actually I pointed out that the source was most likely BS a few posts back. :(

I assumed they would sell around 500k if they pass that I pre-orders who knows how high they could sell after you tally te regular buyers after the first month.

I thought 500k to 800k so it really could go much higher. Interesting.

I don't know if anyone noticed this but rift is selling in the top 5'on steam and top 3 in gamestop (PC sales). This game might hit 1 million pre-orders... That's not including all the people that buy the game on release without pre-ordering. Anyone else shocked by this?

Aion hit almost 3mil box sales in the US within 6months of release.

If I remember correctly that was worldwide. Which isn't surprising because in the east they like grindfests that are filled with bots, hackers and spammers.

Actually with FF14 it was mostly "OMG the game is horrible!!" and "WTF is SE THINKING!?" posts.... very little about sales (only time sales were mentioned was when one or two superfans tried to spin the shipwreck into a success)

APB had 130k registered players, 2 months post launch. How the heck did they have 300k preorders from Amazon alone?

If they dont change a bunch of things in the game it will be the next one in the graveyard, looks to much like Warhammer, but then again it does have one of the developers who in the past worked for Mythic who made Warhammer.

Their so called soul tree looks way to much like WoW, so many things wrong with this game that makes it look like wow.

Eh, the soul tree might look like wow when looking at pictures of it, but when you actually use it its far more involved than wow's talents and allows the player to create a 'spec' that really works for them and their playstyle (unlike wow's talent tree where you have a 'right' way and a 'wrong' way.

As for needing to 'change a bunch of things', what things do they need to change specifically?

No, they had over 4million subscribers in the East before Aion was ever announced in the West.

Why are we discussing a game that's virtually dead in the west (Aion)? I think I missed how that game is even relevant to the discussion of rift and NA & EU box sales. Are we bringing it up as comparison so we could laugh at it's failure? Or how the eastern part of the world when it comes to us and this forum means nothing? Yeah... Anyway moving on.

Could it actualy be possible that people think Rift is better then either one of the games you listed?

This is the reason APB failed....

    Trion learned from APB's mistake...

    You're missing the point obviously.

Aion was huge when it was in the stage Rift is currently in. 3 months after release, everyone was going "what's Aion?". But, we don't have to talk about Aion if you don't want.

We could talk about WAR, DDO or LoTRO if that makes you happy. Because, it was the same situation for all 3 of those, at least until the last 2 went F2P.

Not only those 3, when talking about stuff like this, you can use any Triple A game released Post-WoW interchangebly if that's your thing. Perhaps we could use Vanguard? Maybe AoC? You have quite a few choices if you want. Aion was just the most recent.

Of course, if you don't believe me. I'm sure this site keeps records of posts dating back far enough.

Yeah so rift is going to turn into a big grind mid-level (something we already tested) then have no content at endgame and be flooded with botting and hackers at release? I doubt it. Aion was shit, people playing the Asian version of the game for a year before the NA release told you guys over and over again how much it sucked but noone listened. All you saw was the graphics and the possibility of open world pvp. Completely ignoring the fact that Asian games feature grinds and gold farmer bots and security issues.

I can't believe that was 3million boxes US for AION.  That would be what, the entire population of players in WoW currently in the US?

IF <------(BIG IF THERE) this is true, this could signel some very big preorder sales.  And of course, those that pick the game up the first month.  We could see 1.5 million ++ players in that first month.  I'm not saying this is some huge boon to the MMO market.  But it is something different.  It's polished, something every single MMO game except DC universe has lacked a LOT of in the past few years.  It's focus is PvE with some PvP stuff for people.  It's new.  It will be played by a lot of people for sure.

  •

Well, I just preordered the digital CE from Trion's website. Rift is going viral! ;)

In Australia, we are charged $110 for the CE box. The Australia dollar is on parity with the US dollar, so I payed almost half by going digital. I am curious how many preorders direct from Trion they have now.

You must not know what polish is. Aion was a 2yr old Triple A game when it was released in the West. The "Beta" here had quite a bit of polish on it.
