It's called "My Xsyon Review," not yours, not anyone elses, it's "my review." Is what I find fun in the game, how I see the game, and my opinions based off my experiences in the game, all while it's a Beta. It's still a "game" when it's in production. You still get to "play" the thing.
So, your rude post claiming the "review" of what I've been spending hours on doesn't meet your definition, well sorry slick, I didn't see Webster stamped in your post.
And yes, you're right, I absolutely want more Hype for this game. I want this game to succeed, I want them to make boatloads of money, all for the reason that if they do, it will succeed, it won't die, it won't get scrapped, it won't be a piece of poo release that at least 50% of game releases has been lately.
This is a GOOD game. And I base good off my past gaming experience. Including but not limited to: Earth and Beyond, Horizons, Star Wars Galaxies (pre-cu/nge), WoW, AoC, Fallen Earth, Asheron's Call, AC2, DAoC, Anarch Online, Lineage 2, Ultima Online, Darkfall, and three other games still in Beta.
So, after having witness some very great games, followed by some very huge "Epic Fails" that had to do with those games, well, I'm trying to make sure the gaming world doesn't miss out on what is honestly, truly, and yes, IN MY OPINION, an awesome game to behold.

It's not a review. You can't review something that hasn't been released yet. It's a preview, at most , based on closed-beta details that nobody but other paid beta players can verify. It's also hard to take it seriously when it begins with "The game is just purely awesome.". I applaud the OP's enthusiasm and efforts to stir up hype for the game, however, and I hope the game is fun and does well.

Actually you can review something that is not released. You play the not released game and review it. It's like a game gets released and only 100 people buy it, and one of the players reviews it. -- so you line "it's a preview... based on.... that nobody but other paid beta players can..." is essentially the reviewer's situtation... it's not his fault only a handful of people play it... he played Xsyon and reviewed... a preview is more like a hint or sneak peak at something, a game trailer or preivew for a movie you see on tv...

It wasn't rude. It's just the way it is. Call it a "beta review" if you want, but I stand by my statement. it's not released yet. It's not even "done" yet, according to your own statements.. So, your beta review is only based upon the current beta build, your excitement and your expectations of what's to come, not based on the build the game with which the game will release to the commercial public.
As for you liking the game, that's great. It's not for me to tell you not to. I also don't think there's anything wrong with you wanting to hype the game. Knock yourself out. I just hope it lives up to the hype. After all, this is a game that Notorious started taking customer money for a year ago and for which the game itself was supposed to launch a year ago (originally March 15th, 2010). A game that was obviously nowhere near ready for launch. So, a year laer, I really want to see a polished product that lives up to its feature's list and hype of fans like yourself.
I've been 'watching' the progress of Xsyon for about 2 years now, and in the Beta since March 24th, 2010, yeah, was waiting for it to get released, and got tired of waiting and wanted to try it out. Then after, I dunno, 4, maybe 5 wipes, I got tired of "wasting my time" seeing all my progress get the "reset button." So, it's just been this last week I've come back to it really, to try more stuff out, and make mistakes in the game again, before everything is permanent.
I'm quite amazed what's been done. To me, as long as they get the "Cooking" craft in, and turn on the needs to eat food and drink water, the game is done in my opinion.
Sure, would be nice to see ranged combat, would be nice to see taming, but for me, I have no problems waiting on those and anything else missing for 2-3 months, because there is plenty of stuff to do in game before then. Way too much for even a power-gamer like me to do. I want to do so much though, lol. Others might not be of teh same opinion, haven't seen a whole lot of Beta-er's dropping by to give a shout lately. A lot of him were tired of the wipes too I think, and are still waiting till closer to "Pre-order Pre-launch" on Feb. 14.

If I do play, I'll be happy to look you up. The game certainly looks interesting. One statement you made stands out, though: "I've been 'watching' the progress of Xsyon for about 2 years now". How have you watched the progress of something most people didn't know existed until around February or March of last year?
The most common question I have received so far when asked about this game, has been "What the he** is Xsyon?" My answer is usally about the same, "The only game I've been interested in for about two years now."
Why have I been so interested in Xsyon? One of the most promising, in depth, rewarding, and altogether ingenious "Features List" of any game I have ever seen. The second most common question I get, is "what's it like?" This question is usually a harder one to answer. It's a lot like Wurm, it's a lot like Darkfall, it's a lot like SWG (pre-NGE), it's a lot like "REAL LIFE," and a whole lot more.
Currently this game is still in Beta. I say just Beta, and not Closed or Open, because the way to get into Beta is by pre-ordering the game. Not a bad deal really, ensures the people testing the game are ones who are actually interested in it, not just looking for a free "pre-game" to try out, and giving up 2 days later because of the constant wipes or bugs that happen in Beta. The game though is only 2.5 weeks from it's "Final Wipe" however, February 14, at which time Pre-orders get one more added bonus. Anyone who pre-ordered the game will get a two week headstart on the game before it opens up publicly. That's right, testers/pre-orders are given another reward, a two week headstart before the mindless mob enters the game and start bugging them with questions. The game is set to launch publicly March 1st.
But back to the actual review. The game is just purely awesome. I'm talking about every single aspect of the game being well thought out, purely "Sandbox" as the label is declaring it, and well, fun. I'll go through the "big selling" points, but there really is just so much to cover, I highly suggest you check out their features list. Now, not all of it is currently in or working yet, and the list is a little dated as they have had to change their views on some things, but I would say, this close to launch but still in Beta, about 75% of the listed features are working, with another 10-15% still being worked on. The other 10% is stuff that won't be added until after launch, or might be scrapped altogether in lieu of "different ideas." The features list can be found here:
The bread and butter to many games out there, how to collect resources. There are many different types of resources, with a multitude of ways to gather. First, there's "Scavenging," in which you scrounge around on the ground looking for junk. Another way is "Harvesting," in which you scrounge around on the ground looking for usefull plants. Other ways like chopping trees for wood, terraforming the ground to dig up dirt, picking up a piece of flint off the ground, and skinning, decapitating, de-boning, as well as "dissecting the head" of animals you kill in game for leather, bones, eyes, antlers, skulls, and brains (hmm, brains, Hannibal Lecter would love that). The most common way to gather, is well, just pick it up. From grass (yes, grass is used in a specific craft), to scrapmetal, all the way down to limestone out of rivers, you can just pick it up. Xsyon has some very cool concepts for the different types of resources, and the ways to get them. One thing I really like, is because it's supposed to be set in a Post-Apocolyptic time, in which mankind is try ing to re-build in a remote part of Utah, there are "Scrap Piles" everywhere. Basically piles of debris and junk left over, conceptually from old garbage heaps, fallen buildings, and the like. The kicker, these junk piles are "The Best" way to gather all the different resources for all the crafting. However, as you gather from a junk pile, you use it up. After four times gathering in one spot, the junk pile visual goes away, and you're left standing on a mound of dirt. Now that's realistic, when you take something away, it stays away. Once all the junk piles are used up, the game plans on removing them completely, which means players will have to find a new way to get these resources. These are plans for the future, after the "Prelude," which the launch and initial release of the game is titled. Future ways I have heard of to then get craft resources is raising sheep for wool, planting cotton for cotton fabric, having a mine and smelting ore to craft metal. There's a ton of potential here for growth in all of what the Notorious Games fellows are doing. It's quite impressive.
Crafting
Personally, I love crafting games. I have been let down big time of recent, I really haven't found a game with a really in depth crafting system that I truly liked since Horizons (loved the crafting in that one). This game's Crafting System dwarfs all others I've seen. First the obvious, Weaponcraft. Make weapons, duh, but also, make Axes, Shovels, and Picks, that are not only weapons, but are also used as tools for chopping down trees, digging holes, or destroying rocks. That's right, no "this is GreatAxe, but nope, no chopping wood with it." Use it like it's meant, or use it to kill, your choice. There's Toolcraft, the basis of any and all crafts, in which you make every tool that is required to make everything in every other craft. I mean, nice, can't do much in real life without the proper tools, well, you can't here either. Woodcraft, transfer the trees you cut, turn 'em into logs, then actually make something usefull out of them. There's no "gather this resource and magically is formed into shape to make a hammer" here. Nope, first you have to make it into something usefull, like a wooden handle, or wooden block. Masonry, make bricks. Bricks are then used of course to make walls or other fortifications. Architecture, build walls and buildings, like tents, tee-pees, fences, and more. Basketry, use grass you collect and weave it into storage containers. And not just that, but grass clothing/armor too, lol. Speaking of armor, along with Basketry you have three other crafts to make clothes and armor. Tailoring, Leathercraft, and Bonecraft. Each craft has various amounts of different patterns to learn, from around 120 tools, 50 buildings, 100 weapons, and each armorcrafting craft has around 150 each. That's a lot of patterns. Now, to start with, you can choose one "craft" to specialize in. That craft you will be able to learn every single recipe possible in it just by "practicing" your craft. As you gain skill, you'll get more recipes. You'll also get some of the recipes for the other crafts, and learn a few more, but really only the "basic" ones. That doesn't mean you can't learn them though, for the others you have to find "book" by scavenging or trading, and you read the book, learn a new recipe. Regardless of the craft class you chose. This means you can learn to craft every single recipe in the game, one way or another. Now, just because you can learn the recipe, doesn't mean being a Weaponcrafter will let you make the best tools. No, once you've "mastered your craft," Notorious plans on letting you further improve, repair, and modify what you do make. That's just pure awesome. There is so much more I could cover here, but for the sake of time I'm going to move on.
Terraforming
As with a few other games out there, this game allows you to physically change the shape of the world. You can dig into hill, widen rivers, create a waterfall, cause a flood, build a mountain, or even build a keep. There's so much an imaginative player can do, it's quite astounding. I'm currently in game and have been working on building a keep for the last three days. It's mostly been by myself, but today I actually recruited a few players into my "Tribe" and am now receiving help. You can view my progress so far in the following link. This is purely work done by players, and is a little rough because we're rushing to beat any "wipes" that might occur, so it's not nearly as polished as it will be in ilve:
I'm certain others have done a better job then this, but many in the Beta have lost a little heart in seeing a wipe happen, and then all their hard work get erased from the game. There are plenty of screenshots of different terraforming ideas though on the main Xsyon website.
The Tribal System
Tribes is the term used in Xsyon for "guilds." Though, they work a bit differently. A tribe consists of a leader and it's members as any other guild, but the number of members the tribe has also determines the amount of "land" they can claim. The tribal leader places down a "Totem Pole" which then claims that area in the game for his tribe. This land is the land they are allowed to terraform, and shape the way they want. But it also allows the Tribe to "lay claim" to resources in the area. The trees, the junk piles, the river, even the grass on the ground. Then, as the tribe grows, the "area of claim" for that tribe, increases. Giving them more land to control and develop. This is an awesome feature, that has totally sent me for a loop. Never before in a game have I seen where "Personally owned property" in a game be dependant upon the size of your tribe. Currently in Beta even a one man tribe can lay claim to land and start his building. I believe there will be some "adjustmant" to the size of their claim, as it's really big if you have looked at those screenshots, but all the same, they can build their hut by the river and live in peace.
The next part of the Tribal System I want to discuss is the "town." When a tribe gets so big, it becomes a town, at which time more options are opened up for the Tribe. They can then build a market area, vendors, craft shops, and much more. The Tribal Leader can set taxes, tariffs, and even post up Quests for others to take up and earn money. Those quests will mostly be gather and deliver resources, but there's plenty of room for expansion in the system.
Seasons
That's right, this section is labeled right, there are true "Seasons" in Xsyon. Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, all with different looks and visuals within the game. And not just that, but weather that actually effects your character. This is just astounding, and I'm not sure if I totally understand the system yet, but the rain, snow, sleet, and hail affects how your character plays, as well as your equipment. Just astounding. Currenlty in Beta, the game is at what seems to be the end of Fall, and the beginning of Winter. It's not a sudden change at all, not "one moment dirt, next moment snow." It's raining a lot, and then every now and then you see splotches of "ice" over the ground. I'm really looking forward to seeing snows, and seeing what the snow looks like everywhere. I'm betting it's going to be remarkable though, this game impresses me a lot.
Minimum System Requirements
I've been playing this game in Beta using the "bare minimum system requirements" that are listed in the Game's manual. I'm not certain if I'm allowed to list them, but will tell you what I am running the game on. A Pentium 4 3.4 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, and a Nvidia Gforce 6800GT 512MB video card. For those in the know, realize that this is a "pretty weak" and "outdated" system. I do this though to ensure a game lives up to it's stated minimum. And Xsyon hasn't let me down, even though it's in Beta. Loading time is there when first launching, but the game itself is a "seemless" one, in which there are no "instances," just one big world. I have gotten some lag, but that has seemed like when my Ping has shot up a bit (it's beta). So far though, with mid to low range graphics settings, I run at a fairly constant 80FPS, even while travling around, running into other people (loading others), and fighting animals. I would definitely advise others to have a better system than this antique, just in case, but I am very satisfied with what my 10 year old machine can do.
There is oh so much more I could discuss about this game. I know I'm leaving so much out, this review barely gives it justice. For those wondering, no, I am not an employee of the company, but I am a true Fanatic (some spell that Fanboy), and have been following this game's progress for quite some time. Well, I'll quit tooting Xsyon's horn right now, and hope to see any and all in game at some point. I have high hopes for this one, because there is just loads of potential.
hrmm, i didnt read all of it, but do you work for them?
its called a preview DUH!!! gamespot does it all the time!!! stop putting people down, u dont like what u read then move on dont need to post negative things. Forums are for construction talk. not bashing each other

Read some of my Xsyon forum posts, screenshots and whatnot. Try doinga little research before you slander. I've already dealt with another guy who decided to assume I was an employee. Guess what bud, I'm not. I'm a big time FanBoi though, and not ashamed to admit it. I wish you could fun something in this world you could be passionate about, and have some enthusiasm for it. Then maybe you could feel like I do about Xsyon.
But, troll on, flame on, bang on, whatever, I don't mind smelly, ignorant, flaming trolls. They make me look smart. 8)

The problem with this game and this review is that its sugar coated, when they first announced Xsyon they claimed to have all features complete or 80% complete, yet you had to pay to beta, then they announced a new released date, but you still had to pay to beta, now they are doing it again .. prelude, preview, prerelease... why cant they use the actual and more understandable term of payed beta test? It was misleading 2 years ago, its still misleading now and your review does not help.

I preordered the game long time ago, and no, I didn't pay to beta. I payed to support the development and to get 2 moths of free gaming time after launch. If one is so eager to play an unfinished game that pays for beta thats fine, but don't blame the developers for that. They didn't ask you to pay for beta, they offered 2 months of free time instead of the usual 1 month, and 2 weeks of headstart before launch. A lot of people who preordered don't play during the beta, they are waiting for the launch.
There wasn't a set launch date since August, they said it will launch when its ready....time has come, the game will launch on 1st of March, headstart for preorders starts on 14th of February.

Hmm, I don't know how I can be misleading giving my opinion. It's my opinion. I'm not telling you what to decide, nor am I feeding you my opinion, it's mine.
I tell everyone multiple times, I'm a Fanboi, I have no problem saying it, I know it well. But no, I'm not misleading anyone by saying I'm having fun with a game. I'm sure there are other "sandbox" lovers, that also would love this game. It's been a while since a good sandbox was made, IN MY OPINION, though I've played most that have come out, and enjoyed Darkfall to an extent.
The last sandbox I truly enjoyed, we all know well, and has been talked about for years, SWG. Pre-cu/nge though, because the Themepark it turn into, well, wasn't the game I bought and paid to play.

hey great preview, It looks and sounds cool, I wish there was a little more combat in it. But with RIFT coming on the same day, I wont be able to play both. I see this as another NICHE game that has a very similar name (although gameplay is not similar) RYZOM
Fun games, with 0 hype, my only issue might be if in 6 months I want to play, I got no shot cause the resorces will be gone
I just heard about this game because I was looking to play ER and heard it sucked big ballz and I bumped into this little piece of treasure of game. It has a very well thought out idea and everything seems to be doing pretty good. Only thing that actually discourges me from playing it is the combat system. Id like to know a little bit more about it and if there going to implement more combat oriented skills. I'm only a few clicks away from buying it, even if the game is pretty crappy of now, I wouldn't mind paying 40 bucks to help out the developers make this game better. This is an excellent project to spend 40 bucks on, i mean 40 dollars is pocket change. Its something you would spend on a weekend. So I don't know why people are so stingy over paying for it.
My only question is, are they going to implement more combat skills? That is the only reason why I haven't purchased the game yet. I do love crafting but I also enjoy some good PVP and PVE combat, here and there. Not only being able to mix it up with crafting skills but also being able to mix up skills to be a better fighter.
BTW if i purchase the game I'd be interested in joining your tribe willbonney

If you truly think that Xsyon has less features the ER, you don't know anything about Xsyon. I have been in Xsyon since March '10 and I have been in ER for a week or so. The features in Xsyon are so in depth and so engulfing that you will loose yourself in the game for hours. For example, follow a deer around, watch what it does, you can learn how to hunt them. The deer and all the other animals are spontaneous spawn generated, meaning they mate and reproduce as well as spawn randomly anywhere on the map. They also migrate to other areas, pack animals will get together, where lone hunters will stay solo. The animal AI is simply overwhelming! And this is just the surface stuff I can think of, spend some time in Xsyon, see for yourself how in depth the features will go!

You don't have to worry about that so much. 6 months from now there will be "new' ways to get the same resources. As in, instead of the "junk piles," there will be mining --- I've heard that you actually have to build the mine somewhere on your tribal lands, not just grab a pick and go whacking in the dirt --- as well as farming --- stuff like sheep for wool cloth, cotton planting for cotton, and probably a whole lot more like cows/pigs/corn that sort of stuff. We'll see, only getting "snippets" of info about this stuff.

So much will be progressing and evolving as the land around us does as well as the needs of the settlements change. Will is right though, resources while somewhat finite will always some opportunities for players at any stage
I completely forgot about this game until someone bumped a post recently.
Nice review man, thank you.
Tribes: This has me worried. I love gaming communities and guilds and stuff but i hate having to limit myself to playing with my guild mates. I play online to be able to play with everybody. Due to the tribes gaining more property and resources will it be too hard for someone to play without being in a tribe?
Now i remember... i watched this video awhile ago and it was like 10 minutes of just watching this guy carry wood, was very silly and i was like nahhhhhh.
Sandbox games need better combat man, what is up with these games combat? its bad!

It will have both. The solo player as well as the "Tribal" player.
At the moment, single man tribes have a pretty large "area of claim," but I think that might be turned down a bit, because it is really large and could be used to grief. I built up most of my "keep" by myself, until I started getting a few members joining up around day 3. See the results in my profile now, uploaded some pic's today.

As for combat, some people might be a little let down. Mainly because "there is no magic" really. Also in the Beta right now there is no ranged combat, but they are working on it. The codes for the Bows are there, just not in game atm, nor do I think they have the ranged combat mechanics finished.
The combat system though is similar to what "Darkfall" had originally. A system in which the "hitboxes" were different on each body part, so if you were to hit someone where they have no armor, it hurts more. Also, there is no passive dodge/parry. You actively have to first hit a button (control or alt), and then click a mouse button to dodge left/right, or to "block" (parry) left/right. Also, you actually have to have done it. Takes a lot of practice, and a higher skill in the action, to get good at either of 'em. But, as you raise skill, your character actually gets better at it. As in, you go from smacking yourself in the face when you block, to sticking your arm out trying to parry the blow. You go from "leaning back," to "jumping out of the way" to dodge a blow.
Is interesting, and definitely a different idea to the button mashing in a lot of games. Takes timing, skill, and practice to get good.

At the very least, the game looks promising.
I will definitely try it out if there's a free trial.

I hope you play it Ripper, look me up if you do.

I work for one of their competitors. But, will always be a gamer, and can appreciate another game's greatness.

BTW if i purchase the game I'd be interested in joining your tribe willbonney
er doesnt suck bigballs niether does xsyon ithink xsyon runs smoother atm but it has less features than er atm well kinda : )
